The festive season has begun! Can you believe it’s December already, where did the year go! This month sees two huge events being held at KCC Park. The first is the Dogs Victoria Royal Canin Summer Spectacular held over three days from Friday 30 November to Sunday 2 December. Once again we have another full international panel consisting of judges from all parts of the world. The second event is the Big Day Out for Dogs to be held on Sunday 9 December. The purpose of this event is to showcase all that is Dogs Victoria to the general public. This has become the biggest event to be held at KCC Park with all disciplines being represented on the day, together with club stalls, Christmas celebrations and a Canine Christmas Market. If you have not been before it would be well worthwhile attending. Our regional forums have been a huge success with large numbers attending at all venues. The next forum will be held in Geelong on 23 January 2019 at a venue yet to be arranged.

The night is divided into two sections, a question and answer session on the Code and a session where the members share ideas on the future development of Dogs Victoria. To all those volunteers who work on subcommittees, to all those volunteers who work on the 288 affiliates covering all aspects of Dogs Victoria, I say on behalf of the management committee a big thank you. OBEDIENCE Although most of the dogs worked extremely well during the exercises, one little mishap is all it takes to get a non qualifying score and unfortunately this was the case with a number of dog/ handler teams. Open class saw nine of the twelve competitors qualifying leading into the group exercises, sadly after the group exercises were finished only five were left on qualifying scores. My Best in trial run off was between Miss TL Schumann’s Ch Bronacre Murumbidgee Murphy RA CCD and Miss R McGroarty:
Adderslot Midnight Charmer CDX RE. It was Adderslot Midnight Charmer CDX RE who took out the best in trial award. My fondest memory of all the obedience on the day was a lovely seek back done by Miss R McGroarty’s Labrador Retriever. It was a perfect run out and back. But being a Labrador, he ran out of the ring, found his training bag, dug through it, found his treat container, promptly picked it up and returned to his mum. AGILITY GAMES It was a real pleasure to judge the games day. There is always a more relaxed feel to games in agility and this year was no exception. We started the day with snooker. My courses from novice through to masters were designed to be achievable if running for a qualifying score and of course quite “exciting” if running for the “suicide sevens”. The dog and handler teams overall did very well and I was pleased to have qualifiers in all three classes. Gamblers was next which incorporates distance skills as well as testing the handler’s ability to design their own course ensuring they are near the distance challenge. Some teams struggled with the distance challenge and some had some bad luck with knocked bars but again overall there were some great skills displayed and the spectators enjoyed the events immensely. I was very pleased again to award qualifiers in all three classes. My favourite events of the day were after lunch with strategic pairs. Two dogs and handler teams on the course trying to complete the sequences as flawlessly as possible. If a dog faults an obstacle, the other dog must complete it correctly before moving on. Teams must have great communication skills and be able to think on their feet in this fast paced and often very funny
event. There were some fantastic runs with smooth changes and a great display of skills for the very enthusiastic spectators who absolutely loved it. There were also some not so smooth runs which looked a bit more like a comedy act but were crowd pleasers all the same. I believe that strategic pairs courses should not have forced changes but be designed so that teams have a choice on where and when to swap to gain the best changeovers and perhaps an advantage over the other teams. I was very pleased that all four of my masters pairs teams gained qualifiers with four very different strategic changes. The day ended with open jumping. The distance challenge was quite difficult for a lot of teams with a solid “tunnel send” required. Six teams handled the course extremely well. Congratulations to all winners and qualifiers in all classes. Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable day with many dog and handler teams displaying some awesome skills. It is always a pleasure to see the reaction and support of the crowds for our sport which is fast paced and fun and definitely a crowd pleaser. Sue Gonelli

AGILITY AND JUMPING There were a lot of fantastic, fast and enthusiastic dogs that ran the agility and Jumping Classes along with some outstanding handling. Unfortunately, a lot of dogs succumbed to the tunnel discrimination in most of the classes. It was great to see such a large number of Australian Shepherds running. Most dogs had no issues with completing the course in the standard course time. The atmosphere was great, handlers showing great sportsmanship while waiting and watching

each other, cheering and clapping, or laughing when some dogs were just a tad too naughty. Many thanks to stewards, who were amazingly fast with height and course changes, and just kept the dogs/handlers coming one after the other, we had lots. Correct coat. Sound in construction, front could be better. Moves well. Puppy of Breed: Needs to improve the presentation. Temperament poor at the moment. General Comments: Some of them too heavy and too heavily wrinkled on their noses. Griffon Bruxellois Best of Breed: Lovely type. Correct size, sound male with a lovely temperament. Excellent body proportions. Could have a bit more angulation in front. Correct coat, moved well, very well presented. Puppy of Breed: Correct size and body proportions, lovely breed expression, correct bite, front could improve, correct coat, good mover. General Comments: In some of the dogs I judged I would have liked to see more soundness. Dobermann Best of Breed: Excellent type, so in balance, masculine, excellent head. Could have darker eyes, excellent body proportions. Well constructed and in good harmony between front and rear. Excellent coat and a good mover. Puppy of Breed: Beautiful brown bitch, full of type, excellent temperament, very feminine, compact body, sound in construction, excellent mover, correct coat. General Comments: some of them poor angulation in front, some missing a bit of stop. Chinese Crested Dog Best of Breed: Lovely type. Excellent size and body proportions, head and expression. Very well angulated in front and rear. Good skin, moves well, needs a bit more confidence with the ring. General Comments: Some of them too big. Havanese Best of Breed: Lovely female. She is the one who represents the breed very well. Very correct body proportions. Very lovely head and breed expression. Moves with style. Would like to see more spitz type. Labrador Retriever Best of Breed: Lovely bitch - a true Labrador. A great shape with super body proportions. Very well angulated in the front and rear. Such an expressive head, excellent coat texture. She moves so well and was my eye catcher when she entered the ring. Puppy of Breed: Lovely puppy, very sound in construction. Everything seems to be in the correct place, lovely temperament and breed attitude. Good head and expression, good mover. General Comments: Some of them too heavy. Finnish Lapphund Best of Breed: Lovely male who well represents the breed. Correct size and bone - lovely breed expression with correct proportion between muzzle and skull. Correct body proportions. Moves well, covering ground. Excellent coat.

General Comments: It was very difficult to judge the breed. There is a very wide range of type. Some big, some long in body and heads very different. Some very high on leg and with no body. Fox Terrier (Smooth) Best of Breed: Very nice and strong masculine male, struts like the clearly made hunter, a bit over the size limit, however with many nice things for the breed. Excellent front with a beautiful neck, carrying into well sloped shoulders, short back, enough leg, lot of dog behind the tail, moves very well. Puppy of Breed: Very promising puppy that makes a beautiful outline, moves well. Had a nice head and expression, moves very well. General Comments: Very nice breed to judge, with
a few exceptions. Most of them have excellent fronts. Would check on the height of most exhibits = striving for 15.5 inches. My impression is that they are more around 15 inches or less. Also I felt that many of the head planes are not parallel. Have to keep an eye on this. Fox Terrier (Wire) Best of Breed: Excellent typical masculine dog that stands beautifully like the cleverly made hunter, excellent head and expression, excellent front and rear, compact with enough leg. Excellent coat and condition, outstanding movement. General Comments: Only 2 exhibits - both of them of excellent quality. Manchester Terrier Best of Breed: No Comments. Tenterfield Terrier Best of Breed: No comments. General Comments: First time I judged this breed. Can’t express an opinion. Lakeland Terrier Best of Breed: Very typey masculine male, with good front and rear, nice head and expression, excellent coat and condition. Moved very well around the ring. Puppy of Breed: Very promising puppy with a lovely outline. Excellent temperament, moves very well going around the ring. General Comments: Two excellent exhibits for the breed. Mr Jeff Horswell Dachshund (Long) Best of Breed: liked his outline and proportions. Very good head, lengthy neck, prominent forechest, well sprung ribs, long in loin, held a level topline, well muscled rear, correct coat, holds outline on move. General Comments: Fairly even, watch size, don’t get any bigger. Most have correct coats. Short necks and long loins biggest problem. Some flat feet. All in super condition. Dachshund (Min Long) Best of Breed: Lovely for type, excels in profile. Would like a slightly firmer topline. Feet a bit flat. Good front, well sprung ribs, low hocks. Puppy of Breed: Just needs a bit more confidence. Holds a super outline on move, and is super to go over. Very close to BOB, needs better feet. General Comments: Generally breed similar to UK - fronts a problem, narrow and flat feet. Bodies OK, some too big, coats OK. Some eyes too small. Dachshund (Smooth) Best of Breed: Liked his size and proportions. Can firm up but young still, Holds a level topline. Well laid shoulder. Puppy of Breed: Super outline, just very loose as yet, not as heavy as Res Dog, excellent proportions. General Comments: Small numbers, size was OK generally. Temperament very good. Dachshund (Min Smooth) Best of Breed: Full of personality. Most had long neck. Long upper arms, feet could be better, well ribbed, firm in topline, slightly too much hind angulation. Moved very well. Puppy of Breed: Super shape, medium neck, just a bit loose on move, topline can firm up. General Comments: Generally mostly Dachshund type, scaled down. Most heads very good. Main issue flat fronts and short upper arm. Dachshund (Wire) Best of Breed: Top quality bitch, needs to be trimmed to better advantage. Balanced. Better rear than the male, could have a better head. Super Front. Puppy of Breed: Very promising, needs to firm in topline. Super coat. General Comments: Only 3 – temperaments super. Dachshund (Min Wire) Best of Breed: Sound mover, super coat. Happy temperament. Too high in hock and topline could be better. Puppy of Breed: A nice topline and good balance. High hocks, super coat, very good forechest, could be more positive on move. General Comments: Small entry and a mixed type. Some too long and others too short. Watch mouths, narrow underjaws are a bad fault. Welsh Corgi (Cardigan) Best of Breed: Very good cardigan type, well balanced head, correct ears, lengthy neck, good shoulders, wrap around front, but can turn a foot too much. Very good topline, rear is moderate. General Comments: I tried to prioritise Cardigan type. Some too compact in body, straight in front and small ears. Welsh Corgi (Pembroke) Best of Breed: Super bitch, lovely outline and type. Could be tidier coming towards, super head, lovely body and topline. Uses rear really well, super profile. Puppy of Breed: Baby but full of quality. Took a bit more stride than the bitch, lovely outline. General Comments: My strongest breed of the first day. Most very typical and very well constructed, fronts could be better in some. Short upper arms. Australian Cattle Dog Best of Breed: Top dog is a really easy mover, solid body, deep chest, very good feet, would just like better set ears. Fabulous on move. Puppy of Breed: Really good prospect, a few months maturity and will be challenging. Very good outline, super head. General Comments: Real treat to judge this native breed, males were stronger. Most very well muscled, but some with forward shoulders and too moderate in hind quarters. Angulation an issue. Australian Kelpie Best of Breed: She had a very good profile action, using rear well. Could be tidier, she has a very good head, enough neck, a fraction long. Puppy of Breed: Very promising, but still very raw. She is very good in profile action. Swedish Lapphund Best of Breed: Very good for proportions, liked his head, dark eyes, good head, well laid shoulder, and good return of upper arm. Firm body. Sound mover. Bearded Collie Best of Breed: Beautiful bitch. Correct proportions and a very easy mover with correct tail carriage, firm back, lengthy neck, very good front, lean body and well ribbed back. Moderate angulation and short in back. Typical action, clean cheeks. Puppy of Breed: She is a nice type. Very good head, movement needs to improve. Belgian Shepherd (Laekenois) Best of Breed: Fairly sound bitch. Head planes incorrect, good neck, well made front and rear. She is a bit long and big enough. Belgian Shepherd (Tervueren) Best of Breed: Excellent breed type dog, moderate, brisk action, clean head, lengthy neck, very well balanced, moved correctly. Puppy of Breed: Nice type, balanced on angulation, clean cheeks. General Comments: Some very good types, maybe some too big and long. Old English Sheepdog Best of Breed: Super bitch, lovely shape, short in back. Slightly better coat than the lovely dog, well laid shoulders, super movement. General Comments: The best are really super. Icelandic Sheepdog Best of Breed: Very good mover and correct proportions, moderate in angulation. Level topline, could have a little more width of skull. Shiba Inu Best of Breed: Straight front legs, well set ears, thick neck, best shoulders of the 3, level topline, correct length body, maybe slightly heavy in body. Border Collie Best of Breed: High class bitch, super outline and proportions. Feminine head, correct length neck, well laid shoulder, nice width and depth of chest, well ribbed, firm topline, slightly close going away. Puppy of Breed: Lovely for type, and typical mover. Liked his front, level topline. Masculine head. General Comments: Breed is very strong. Some very good males, the bitches were super. Watch upright pasterns and forward shoulders. Schnauzer Best of Breed: Correct proportions, excellent profile action, bit broad in skull, good neck, in very good body coat, topline and tail set OK, very good hind action. Puppy of Breed: Promising, nice type, but wide in front, super head. General Comments: Breed is very good for numbers but as in many countries, disappointing, many lacked forechest. Some soft coats. Too many light eyes. Trimming could be improved. Schnauzer (Min) Best of Breed: He has super proportions and good schnauzer type. Masculine head, super eye and expression. Enough neck , has a forechest, big ribs. Very good rear, a harsh body coat. General Comments: Many lacked forechest, most body coats OK - some a bit soft. Most soft leg hair and too much. Schnauzer (Giant) Best of Breed: Not awarded. Puppy of Breed: Promising but just not ready for CC. He is soft, coat needs to harden, loose movement, tail down, but has a good head. Long neck and correct proportions. Dogue de Bordeaux Best of Breed: Very typical bitch. One of the best movers in the breed. Correct head for proportions and trapezoid shape. Well set eyes, correct neck and topline, well filled chest. Puppy of Breed: Female, very raw as you would expect, better feet than the male. General Comments: Type is mixed- as everywhere and always lots of compromise. Some too short in muzzle and lacking fill of cheek. Please, loose lead on the move and let them drop their heads - it is correct and typical. Bullmastiff Best of Breed: Top class - so light on his feet. Good head, square in skull and a very good muzzle. Strong neck. Correct proportions, front slightly toes in, firm topline. Super mover. Puppy of Breed: Very promising. Very raw and rolls yet has a very good head. General Comments: Conditioning super. Some need a bit more muzzle. Impressed with the soundness of them, Mastiff Best of Breed: Young and still raw, but one of the better ones. Well balanced head, balanced in angulation, correct topline. Puppy of Breed: Very promising young bitch - just right for her age. Very sound. General Comments: Movement and slack feet and pasterns a big problem. Difficult breed to rear but conditioning is essential, Neapolitan Mastiff General Comments: Sadly unable to award any Challenges. Some had poor eyes - red - or weak pasterns and feet were poor. Tibetan Mastiff Best of Breed: Top class dogs - super outline and proportions. Had well laid shoulders, level toplines. Better hind action. General Comments: Only 4 but all really good examples. The CC & Res CC dogs - world class dogs. Tatra Shepherd Best of Breed: Nice proportions, in very good coat, well made front. Could be better going away, easy profile action. St Bernard Best of Breed: Super bitch, very good in profile. Would like clearer eyes, moderate front, level topline. Very good rear. General Comments: Presentation excellent, eyes are a problem, too deep set and wet. Fairly sound, all well boned. Deerhound Best of Breed: Feminine, a lovely type. Good head, eyes could be a bit darker, strong neck, good front, nice spring of rib, curvy outline. Light and springy movement. Puppy of Breed: Very promising, correct shape and a very good mover. General Comments: Mouths need attention as do tails. Polish Lowland Sheepdog Best of Breed: Only 14 months, liked her size and proportions, feminine head, good coat texture, could have a slightly better rear. Nice front and well ribbed. Samoyed Best of Breed: Super masculine dog of top size. So good to go over, masculine head, lengthy neck, very good front, correct feet, super body. Puppy of Breed: Really promising puppy who won Res Challege. Liked his proportions, very good mover. General Comments: Very strong breed and a great pleasure to judge. A few tight bites, some too short on leg and some long. Generally very high quality. Shetland Sheepdog Best of Breed: Loved his proportions. He has a masculine head, clean. Sweet expression, lengthy neck, fairly good front, level topline, moved well. Puppy of Breed: Promising, nice proportions and sound. General Comments: Well conditioned, movement is fairly good. Some have a bit more leg. Collie (Rough) Best of Breed: Lovely shape and a good mover. Lengthy well balanced masculine head, good eye, ear and expression. Lengthy neck, level topline, well carried tail. Puppy of Breed: Very promising, liked her shape. Ears could be better set, moved very well. General Comments: Ear set could be better, some weak underjaws, and more dirty teeth. Some upright shoulders. Rears are good and decent movement. Collie (Smooth) Best of Breed: Upstanding dog and a good mover. Clean masculine head, very good eye, ear and expression. Strong neck, firm topline. Puppy of Breed: Very promising, feminine bitch, just a bit loose in front. Good colour. General Comments: Fairly even and all very typical. A few flat feet. Heads generally typey with good ears. Swedish Vallhund Best of Breed: Real show dog. In super hard condition, correct head shape, strong neck, well made, and moves well. Puppy of Breed: Liked his shape, needs more confidence. General Comments: Fairly even and typey entry. Some could be better. Toplines need watching. Cane Corso General Comments: This breed needs careful rearing. Hind action was a concern, as were eyes. Great Dane Best of Breed: Lovely type bitch, feminine head, dark eyes, long neck, well laid shoulder, deep well filled chest, level topline. Slightly flat in croup. Well bent stifle. Puppy of Breed: Very promising. He is well proportioned, nice straight front, deep feet, very good topline. General Comments: All of a nice type - elegant. Fronts could be better. Must have a good topline. Boxer Best of Breed: Lovely bitch, very sound on move and a very good head, super eye and expression. Strong neck, well made front, correct forechest, well ribbed. Puppy of Breed: Very promising pup, super head, just needs to come together on move. Super outline. General Comments: Fairly even. A couple of wry mouths. Movement is generally very good. Fronts mixed. Rottweiler Best of Breed: Strong, above medium size dog. Very powerful mover, correct proportions, hard topline. Puppy of Breed: Very promising, liked her outline. Very good movement. General Comments: All well muscled up. A few a bit soft in topline. Excellent temperaments. Leonberger Best of Breed: Very typical dog, plenty big enough. Good head, strong neck, a bit forward in shoulder, super ribcage and body. Strong rear. General Comments: Don’t get them too heavy. Tails need watching. Pyrenean Mountain Dog Best of Breed: Very good for type, he has a good head. Slight stop, strong and shortish neck. Could have a better front, super body. Very good rear. General Comments: Some a bit too big, very few wheeled their tails, seems a worldwide problem. Fronts also a world wide problem. Landseer Best of Breed: Correct proportions, feminine head, balanced angulation, needs a bit more stride in front. Topline OK, well carried tail. Newfoundland Best of Breed: Very good type, light on her feet. Feminine
head, correct neck, bit untidy coming toward. Level topline, very good rear. Puppy of Breed: Promising baby, a very good mover. General Comments: Breed is in good shape. Some too heavy, a few heavy heads and loose eyes. Fronts need watching. Portuguese Water Dog Best of Breed: Top quality dog, 10 years old and in amazing condition. Good width of skull, excellent proportions, correct short neck, strong swimmers front, level in topline, Super mover. General Comments: All the right shape and have decent width of skull. Nothing close to the exceptional 10 year old BOB. Russian Black Terrier Best of Breed: Strong and powerful dog who is very typey. Masculine head, strong neck, good front, super body, firm topline, well muscled up. Puppy of Breed: Liked his proportions. Super character, tail could be better. General Comments: Most are a bit too long. Temperaments all excellent. German Pinscher Best of Breed: Nice proportions. Topline is OK. Balanced angulation. Puppy of Breed: Very raw but nice proportions, needs a firmer topline. General Comments: Only 4 - all square, be careful about mouths when breeding. Field Spaniel Best of Breed: Lovely bitch with very typical movement. She has a long well chiseled muzzle. Correct stop, eye and expression, well made front, level topline, ribs go well back, super temperament. Puppy of Breed: Very promising, would like a bit more depth to muzzle. Very typical and movement OK. General Comments: They could all be a bit bigger and up on leg a fraction. Mouths were OK, as everywhere feet and pasterns not great on all.
