FROM THE PRESIDENT WAYNE FLEMING in your paperwork to the office for processing and to receive a hard copy of your membership card.

Last month one of Dogs Victoria’s premier events, the Night of Nights, was held at the Bulla dog Exhibition Centre and what a very successful night it was. Congratulations to all the winners!

As part of our member education program, a presentation has been developed which aims to familiarise members with some important changes made to our Code of Practice which members must comply with. The presentation is on the website and can be found at: https://dogsvictoria.org.au/members/ members-area/members-resources/code-of-practice/

This night take months of planning so I would like to congratulate Sandra Mashford and her very hard working committee. You should be proud of your achievement, well done!

Our last regional forum, in this round, was held in Geelong in January with another large audience. Management committee will now commence work discussing the recommendations from the five forums. A summary of the recommendation will shortly appear in the gazette. The next round of forums will be held at Bulla and KCC Park.

Congratulations also to the committee of the Twilight Canine Country Club for hosting Dogs Victoria’s inaugural FCI Show in February. The committee has requested feedback from members to enable an even better show in 2020.

The Dogs Victoria election results, to fill five positions, should have been announced by now. Congratulations to our newly appointed members, full results will appear in the May gazette.

Management committee and the ANKC is currently looking at ways to improve efficiencies with the ANKC database. The aim is to eventually allow members to process their own membership renewals, litter registrations and title applications online. As well we are looking at going digital with our membership cards by enabling members to access their cards on their mobile phone. These changes will result in large savings to Dogs Victoria. Don’t worry, there will still be provision to send

Dogs Victoria Retrieving Trial Dog of the Year 2018 After a tally of results for retrieving trials conducted during 2018, the eighteenth annual Dogs Victoria Retrieving Trial Dog of the Year has been decided. The Retrieving Trial Dog of the Year is based on the cumulative placings gained in all retrieving trials conducted in Victoria during the calendar year. The higher the level of the stake or championship, the more points a dog can receive for placing. The award 2018 has, for the first time, gone to Labrador Retriever bitch RT Ch Adderslot Georgie Anna (Georgie) owned by Trevor Stow. Georgie’s results for the year included three wins, one second and four third placings in all age. Second place was a tie between two dogs owned by the same owners Russell and Sheree Whitechurch Nat & Gr RT Ch Adderlsot Chief (Chief) and Nat RT Ch Adderslot Maggie May (Maggie); both dogs being Labrador Retrievers. RETRIEVING AND FIELD TRIALS

Congratulations to Trevor Stow and Georgie on a major achievement. German Shorthaired Pointer Club Retrieving Trial January 2019 The retrieving trial year kicked off at Sale over the long weekend of January 26 & 27. The trial was conducted by the German Shorthaired Pointer club of Victoria. After an extremely hot and windy day on Friday, where the only means of survival for dogs and humans was to relax in the river, we were blessed with great weather for the competition on Saturday and Sunday. Very good entries were received and a lot of very good dog work was seen, especially considering many dogs were returning after a lay off from training over the summer. There was also a good turnout of spectators on hand, many experiencing their first look at a retrieving trial, and this was excellent to see.

COMMITTEE

KCC PARK FACILITIES NEWS

Earlier this year management committee re-established the KCC Park facilities committee. Chris Moore was appointed as the chair and the hard working committee is made up of David Barclay, Trevor Stevens, Stacey Sullivan, Vin McPhee and Chris Warren. Our key charter is to oversee the fixed assets at the Park and monitor the maintenance program. We have had a very busy year with many hours of work by our committee, and a lot of money has been expended. Our first key focus was to ensure all our utilities were working correctly, and safe. Front lawn works The major project that we are currently completing is in regards to the lawn area, mainly in exhibition area one 4

Dogs Victoria | March 2019

(front area), after the dead grass and weeds became a major issue, and nearly losing the entire surface. A turf contractor was employed to provide remediation by ways of herbicides and fertiliser, and to top dress low lying ring areas. A lot of repairs have been undertaken on the sprinkler system to ensure that we get full water coverage, and three new sprinklers were installed in January 2019. The lawn is currently watered twice daily between 9am and 6pm and the timer system has been set to ensure all areas are watered.

So that the grass in this area can be fully repaired and all required works completed, exhibition area one is still only to be used for scheduled events. Next Major Projects Our next major and urgent capital project which we need to raise funds for is installation of fire services at KCC Park. We have also started scoping the sewerage connection which will allow more toilets and showers to be installed. Costs are unknown at this point; however, the sewerage project is a 2-3 year job.

Replacing of all the pumps in the septic tank system which had burnt out after many years of use.

The concrete water tank has been leaking for many years and is required for the CFA for firefighting water storage. This has now been demolished.

How can you help Volunteer at the Friends of the Park Group working bee please contact the committee for more information. Assist with funding • If any breed club, performance club of all breeds club wishes to assist with funding please contact the committee.

Other future projects the committee is undertaking include:

New off lead areas

Upgrades to the wooden pergolas

Pavilion lighting

Vendor area upgrades

Upgrading locks on the pavilion doors

Hot water units in the pavilion

New stoves and fridges in the Lyndhurst room

Repairs to the Classic Room

Recycled Water System - While we are fortunate to have access to recycled water, the system has been failing over the summer and running at 40% capacity. This system has undergone major maintenance to ensure they are operating at maximum capacity. We are now investigating installation of two additional storage tanks to provide more water. Asphalt entrance to the Boxhall pavilion carpark - due to water damage from broken pipes we are looking to concrete the entrance and installing new pipes to the affected areas. The birds in the pavilion have been an ongoing issue, and last year we replaced all the broken wire on both ends of the pavilion and wired the open drains. This has dramatically reduced the number of birds; however, we are still trying to identify where the birds are still getting in. Quotes are being obtained to fill these gaps.

Projects require funding for include:

If you have any ideas for the Park or wish to discuss an issue, please contact the office by email at office@dogsvictoria.org.au or contact Chris Moore at ctmoore@dogsvictoria.org.au.

Projects that have been completed include: •

The storm water system has been cleaned out. All the storm water including the roadway drains feeds into the lake through a large pump pit. One of the pumps was totally blocked with balls and other debris. An important reminder to ensure that all litter is picked up.

Blocked drains in the pavilion have been cleaned out.

The Wedge Rd entrance has been graded at no cost to Dogs Victoria, and we have also cleaned out the Wedge Rd drains to prevent flooding at the entrance.

Blockages to the Classic Room toilets has been a major issue due to incorrect items being flushed down them instead of using the provided bins. To help fix these issues and future blockages, the main outlet pipe has been increased in size and tree roots removed.

JUNIOR HANDLERS KNOWLEDGE HUB

JUNIOR HANDLERS IN THE SHOW RING This is the second part in a series aimed a junior handlers. We will be reproducing extracts from the ANKC Junior Handlers manual which can be located in full at www.ankc.org.au/media/9113/15-ankc-reg15_junior-handlers_oct16v2.pdf Entering the Ring

Setting up Dogs

Look before entering the ring to see where the judge is standing.

Listen to either the steward or the judge as to where they want you to go.

You are required to set up any breed of dog in exactly the same manner as it would be presented in the show ring.

Make sure not to crowd the handler in front, leave plenty of space between each handler and dog and enough room for the judge to walk between.

Junior handlers should set up their dogs head to tail at ALL times. This should be done as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Sometimes there are only a few seconds before the judge will be ready to look at your dog.

Always keep an eye on the judge, so you never walk between your dog and the judge.

Have your dog on show at all times unless instructed to relax your dog.

Move towards the rear of the dog as the judge comes to its front by giving a command, if need be, to steady your dog. Move towards the front of the dog’s head as the judge approaches the rear end again give a command to steady the dog if need be.

When walking towards the rear of your dog, never step over the dog’s back. Progress slowly step by step and, if need be, give the dog a command to stand steady.

As the last dog moves around have your dog set up for the judge to view.

CONFORMATION

CONFORMATION CORNER WR IT TE N BY: JASON MOOR E Hello and welcome to another edition of the Conformation Corner! March is another busy month of dog shows, with plenty of options on the table. As always there are plenty of shows on offer both at KCC park and in regional Victoria. Whilst I reguarly exhibit at KCC Park, I do try and travel across Victoria when I can. With shows on in Tallangatta, Noorat, Warragul, Cohuna and Bunyip, it gives the exhibitors a plethora of choices to show our dogs in different environments and see other areas of this great state. Furthermore, all of these country shows need our support and they’re the livelihood of our dog shows being so fun. I hope you can at least get to one of these shows and explore our great outdoors.

And when that dear short life is over, the title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend, volumes of pride in one small set of initials after the name. A title earned is nothing less than love and respect, given and received, and permanently recorded. I felt inspired when I stumbled across this article, well not only inspired, but satisfied that I put in all this huge amount of effort for more than just prizes or rewards. I spend a lot of time and early mornings for the sheer love and companionship that our beloved dogs provide us, and a title (no matter if performance or conformation) is way for us to honour and treasure our wonderful fourlegged companions.

Please pick up after your dog and dispose of all rubbish, including dog came hairacross and cigarette butts, in the I recently a really insightful article by I hope you can all continue to consider my thoughts, Sandra Mowery, it was called ‘Why Title A Dog?’, and I’ve been writing this article for some time, and I still appropriate rubbish bins have new people who approach me and compliment I felt it really outlines in a fitting way, why we even compete with our dogs, not just at conformation shows, but all events. I would like to thank the author, Sandra Mowery, and apologise that I was never able to find you to ask for permission to share this, but I wanted to credit you with this wonderful piece.

my article. I do my best to look at things without bias and keep a positive spin with our hobby. If you keep reading, I’ll keep writing! Thanks again for reading the Conformation Corner and if you wish to have anything covered in this article then please let me know.

Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive scores, a title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honour the dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in record and in memory for as long as anything in this world can remain. Few humans will do as well or better in that regard.

Until next time. Jason Moore

And though the dog itself doesn’t know or care that it’s achievements have been noted, a title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count. A title says your dog was intelligent and adaptable, and good-natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed. And a title says that you loved your dog, that you loved to spend time with it because it was a good dog, that you believed in it enough to give it yet another chance when it failed, and that, in the end, your faith was justified. A title proves that your dog inspired you to that special relationship enjoyed by so few; that in a world of disposable creatures, this dog with a title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return. www.dogsvictoria.org.au

KNOWLEDGE HUB

IS IT DANGEROUS FOR DOGS TO DRINK SALT WATER? WR IT TE N BY: ANNA BUR KE

Anyone who has ever swallowed a mouthful of salt water after swimming in the ocean knows how unpleasant it tastes. When it comes to our canine companions, drinking salt water isn’t just dangerous for dogs, it can also be deadly. Dogs Drinking Salt Water Dogs love playing at the beach, but games of fetch, chasing waves, and swimming can all lead to salt water consumption. In most cases, a few mouthfuls of salt water may only cause diarrhea. Consuming large amounts of salt water, however, can be fatal. The osmotic properties of salt water disrupt the fluid balance in your dog. This can lead to deadly amounts of fluid around the brain, inflammation, and gastric ulcers and hemorrhages. Dogs with toxic levels of sodium in their systems have a mortality rate higher than 50 percent, regardless of treatment. Treating Saltwater Poisoning in Dogs If you suspect that your dog has consumed a toxic amount of salt water, your best bet is to get him to the veterinarian as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for saltwater poisoning in dogs. Your veterinarian will attempt to restore your dog’s water and electrolyte balance to normal levels. Lowering sodium levels too quickly, however, can be 10

Dogs Victoria | March 2019

dangerous, increasing the likelihood of cerebral edema (fluid on the brain). In ideal cases, the water and electrolyte balance will be restored over a period of 2-3 days. This usually involves hospitalisation. Further supportive care and medications may be given, depending on your dog’s condition. Symptoms of Saltwater Poisoning in Dogs Drinking excessive amounts of salt water typically results in vomiting within a few hours. While mild cases may only involve a few bouts of diarrhea, in severe cases the dog may suffer from weakness, diarrhea, muscle tremors, and seizures. If your dog shows any of these signs, even diarrhea, call your veterinarian or local veterinary emergency hospital for advice. Preventing Saltwater Poisoning The amount of salt water required to reach toxic levels depends on your dog’s access to fresh water. The best thing you can do to keep your dog safe at the beach is to make sure he always has access to fresh water. If you notice your dog drinking ocean water, restrict his access, provide him with fresh water and shade, and keep an eye on him for signs of toxicity. OBEDIENCE, TRACKING & ENDURANCE

OTEC NOTES WR IT TE N BY: DAWN HOWAR D Hopefully by the time you read this article the weather will have settled. So far this year we have had some interesting adventures - heat, cold then rain and hail, with some absolutely perfect weather in between. This is our wonderful country. Some of our members in Northern Victoria, have reported temperatures in the 40s for days on end. Dawn Ayton and I, who came up from Melbourne as trainers, were impressed with the troopers from the Gippsland Obedience Dog Club, who turned up on time for a formal obedience training session for Maribeth Murphy, a trainee judge for CCD. The whole area was on alert because of a large fire burning near Rosedale. At one stage Maribeth’s house was under threat. Some members of the club had been out all night, on the trucks and they still had a smile on their faces. Good to see a club supporting its members but sad to hear of the continuing fires in Gippsland. We sincerely hope that the fire season will pass without further incident. Sadly, no trials to report on in Victoria this month however that hasn’t stopped the training happening. It has been very hot for the morning training groups at KCC Park. At least one has postponed training to the evening which has been a great success. As many people are preparing for the Bega Valley and Sapphire Coast trials, this tactic has been good practice for those warm evening trials ahead. OTEC has been working towards the Dogs Victoria Instructors accreditation procedure. This is in two parts; the Master Instructors Certificate, and the Dogs Victoria Instructors Certificate. It is essentially an assessment-based program administered by Dogs Victoria in which the instructors are trained by the clubs. To this end, the Obedience Tracking and Endurance Committee of Dogs Victoria conducted a series of lectures, the first by Kaye Hargreaves and then by Lea Cogley. Lea has kindly taken on the role of assessing the first of the Master Instructor candidates. Firstly, attendance at the lectures was required, then a written examination, followed by a practical assessment. The first of the practical assessments were done over three nights and were conducted by Lea Cogley, assisted by members of OTEC. The first batch of people to receive the Dogs Victoria Master Instructors Certificate include Greg 12

Dogs Victoria | March 2019

Bobbin, Rob Butler, Rosalie Gerlach, Linda Johnson, Julie Urie and Lea Cogley herself, who insisted on completing the written examination prior to assessing the other candidates. It is hoped that in the future, the master instructors will be able to take on the role played by OTEC to date. To this end, most of the master instructors have completed the Dogs Victoria assessors training. On a very sad note, we lost one of our very respected trialers, Roy Granger. He had several very good dogs over the years, including his Australian Shepherd Blu, who he was trialling in UDX until his health deteriorated. Roy was a good man, honest and hardworking and always positive, except about his hard-worked body that stopped working properly. He will be missed. I managed to find a rare photo of Roy winning a trophy for high scoring member of Werribee Obedience Dog Club where he was a life member. Happy training and trialling. IN THE LIBRARY

LIBR ARY NOTES WR IT TE N BY: C L AR E HO DG ES By the time this edition of the gazette hits your letter box the library should be up and running again. We thank everyone for their patience and support while we were closed. Our current goal is to have the library open four days a week, but to do this we do need a little extra help so if you are interested in helping in the library we would love to hear from you. We are pleased to report that our inaugural show went off well, though numbers could have been better we were delighted considering we were the last show after a long week of showing. Our raffle also did very well! We thank everyone for their support of our show and raffle and look forward to next year. All the funds we raised go back into our library, which is also of course your library.

THE WORLD OF CLUMBERS 2000 – 2005

EDITED BY JA N I RVI N G

It gives me great pleasure to present a review of the above stunning book edited by long-time Dogs Victoria member Jan Irving. Jan’s previous book, ‘The White Spaniel’, covered Clumbers up until 2000. This limited-edition book is published by Bas Bosch from Belgium, who specializes in books on rare and unusual dog breeds. The Clumber Spaniel fits into this bracket because, as a working dog, Springers and Retrievers have overtaken them in Retrieving Trials. Here in Australia, these two groups of dogs compete side by side making it hard for a slowmoving breed like the Clumber. The ‘core’ format of the book is profile photos and pedigrees where twenty different countries are covered. The photography is amazing. Especially as Jan decided to include not only profile show shots, but also interesting shots of Clumbers in unusual poses in the General sections Jan decided to include. These are Clumbers hunting traditionally, as therapy dogs, doing not only agility and tracking, but also heelwork to music, scentwork and portrayed in art. This makes it an interesting coffee table style book. Its 300+ pages are securely bound in a strong, hard cover, making it a welcome addition to the VCA Library. Flicking through the pages of a book such as this also makes visits to the library more memorable. I am sure the members join with me in thanking Jan and the Clumber League of Victoria for the privilege of housing such a beautiful and rare book.
