FROM THE PRESIDENT WAYNE FLEMING Dogs Victoria has had a busy start to the year, with the second meet the breeds at Moomba held on Saturday 9 March. I am pleased to report that again, it was a great success, and that this year we had more breed ambassadors - both human and canine - enthusiastically greet the Moomba crowds at Kings Domain near the botanical gardens. This event is quite different to events like the Big Day Out for Dogs or the Dog Lovers Show (which will be on us soon as well!) as the encounters our ambassadors have are with people who may not have much understanding of purebred dogs or have even heard of Dogs Victoria – so it is very much a case of engaging with the general public and promoting not just responsible dog ownership, but healthy pedigree dogs as well. A huge thanks goes to our volunteer members who acted as Dogs Victoria ambassadors and to our wonderful staff who not only organised but also attended the event, including our public relations and communications team. On the theme of education, we have also started to roll out our internal seminar series, commencing with Dr Stuart Mason of Monash Veterinary Clinic who presented the latest research on desexing in posing the question when should my dog be desexed?

2 10 OTEC NOTES

www.dogsvictoria.org.au

As part of the seminar series, Dogs Victoria also ran the Nina Bondarenko behaviour & training workshops at KCC Park over three days (Wednesday 20 March - Friday 22 March). These workshops were very well attended and feedback from participants was very positive, particularly in relation to the various training approaches covered and advice on canine behaviour management. These seminar series, as well as the positive public relations work that Dogs Victoria regularly conducts, not only are beneficial for our members and the public image of pedigree dogs, but also assists us in promoting Dogs Victoria as the representative of responsible dog ownership and breeding in the state, to the government. Our Applicable Organisation status is up for renewal this year, and members will be pleased to know that we have the renewal process in hand and we are confident that we will meet all reporting obligations.

With around 80 members in attendance, we also livestreamed the session, allowing more members to participate online. The feedback we have received on the session was extremely positive, and we are planning further sessions shortly through the Education Committee. Again, thanks to everyone who made this seminar possible, and of course we appreciate Dr Mason sharing both his time and expertise with us.

NIGHT OF NIGHTS

NIGHT OF NIGHTS SPECTACUL AR WR IT TE N BY: SAN D R A MASH FOR D Oh what a night! The Top Dog and Top Puppy for 2018 has come and been won and it couldn’t have been a better night. This year’s celebration of purebred dog sport in Victoria was all about fun, enjoyment and glamour. Competitors and spectators alike were dressed for the event in their best evening attire with many handlers being unrecgoniseable. This gala event is exclusive to those dogs who have been awarded Best in Show and Puppy in Show within Victoria throughout 2018. This year’s event had a record amount of entries with 82 puppies and 72 adults being entered and they were all the “crème de la crème” of our purebred canines. The mystery judges were unveiled on to the red carpet to be Stephanie Rickard from Victoria, Derek Hyde from the ACT and Glen Vernon from NSW by the master of ceremonies Nic Luke. They were each escorted by Chief Steward Anthony Price, assembly steward Maureen Gostelow and Night of Nights chair, Sandra Mashford. Top Puppy of the Year

We need to say thank you and acknowledge all exhibitors for their incredible sportsmanship and respect shown to one another and each should be very proud as the judges had many tough decisions to make throughout the night. The applause and cheering from the gallery was very noticeable throughout this gala event. Prior to the awards for top dog & top puppy, the best dressed male & female from both sections was revealed, each being selected by a mystery judge, revealed to be Colleen Morgan. The semifinalists were revealed to be Ben Richardson, Sarah Peterson, Aaron Chato & Huey Miin Lim and each was presented with beautiful sashes from Computer Sashes and armbands from Diva’s Treasures. The final four took a lap of honor where the best dressed male was awarded to Ben Richardson and best dressed female awarded to Huey Miin Lim.

GET INVOLVED

LURE COURSING

LURE R ACING

Lure coursing is an old sport, reinvented due to not involving live prey anymore, using the sighthound’s keen abilities of hunting by sight/movement and the thrill of running down the prey and following the prey’s movements over a large area.

For a great day’s fun for you and your pampered canine pet why not try lure racing? All dogs love to run and chase. Lure Racing is different from lure coursing in that it is run over a straight course of 80 to 100 metres for small terriers and other small breeds.

The prey, nowadays, is a piece of white plastic tied to a long line of between 300 and up to 1000 meters, circling, zig zagging, going back over the already run course, with a long straight or two for the hounds to stretch out over.

The dogs are raced four at a time from starting boxes and chase a lure pulled by a battery operated machine. Hurdle races and water jumps are also included on our fun days. The antics of some dogs when first raced have the spectators rolling with laughter, some stay in the boxes and others run straight to the fence to a person they know, instead of chasing the lure. After a couple of races they get the idea and are very keen to catch the lure.

The course is never the same at different events or on consecutive days and varies in design and maneuverability, testing the hound in fitness, eagerness to chase and keeping the eyes on “the lure” at all times. The hounds are coursed individually or in pairs.

Both purebred and crossbred and any other small breeds can join in on race days.

The equipment used are lure machines, which run the line around pulleys set where the course designer has designated, with a tube or similar object , where the plastic bag goes at the start and finish of the course. The hounds usually love chasing, the owners get to share the thrill of the chase with each other and spectators alike.

CONTACT THE DOGS VICTORIA OFFICE FOR MORE DETAILS ON HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE

If you know someone who may be interested in this event, make sure you sign them up as Dogs Victoria member so they can try it out.

CONFORMATION

CONFORMATION CORNER WR IT TE N BY: JASON MOOR E Hello and welcome to the April edition of the Conformation Corner!

Easter is upon us once again (it feels like yesterday that it was Christmas!) and it always provides us with good opportunities to attend some show circuits here in Victoria and interstate. For those travelling up to Sydney Royal and all the Breed specialties held with it, or to Mt Gambier in South Australia, I wish you all the very best of luck. I also wish you all to have a happy and successful Easter.

On Sunday the 17th of February in conjunction with the FCI CACIB show, the Twilight Canine Country Club held an inaugural neuter championship show, a show eligible to neutered dogs only and judged by Jan Seary (NSW). This was well received by over 130 entries and seemed to be a brilliant success; group 5 alone had 39 entries! Although I don’t show a neuter myself, it was wonderful to see so many new exhibitors out there having a great time. I applaud those that made the effort to getting this off the ground, and this includes both the committee, judge & all the exhibitors. Hopefully we will see more neuter shows like this in the future. Well done to all! On a sourer note, I just want to remind exhibitors of Dogs Victoria’s set up policy at both KCC Park & Bulla, it appears that exhibitors are setting up mats & gazebos the day prior to the show. I believe the Friday night before the Sunshine show on Saturday 16th February there were over 25 gazebos set up! I find this to be really selfish & unfair for those exhibitors who are unable to get to the grounds the night before, or make the effort to be at the show by 6am to find a spot. Furthermore, I have also seen exhibitors setting their gazebos up with the wide side of their gazebos facing the ring. Again, this minimises the amount of gazebos that can be closer to the ring, this is not allowed so please do not do it. We have a policy, members need to follow it, however for those that haven’t read it, please see below:

relation to setup prior to shows and the policy will revert to the following: 1. No set up prior to the day of the show, in the event of a double show, prior to the day of the first show. This excludes gazebos booked through Dogs Victoria. Members note if they are hiring these gazebos they are not able to access them prior to the day of the show, in the event of a double show, prior to the day of the first show. 2. All gazebos are to be set up with the narrow side to the ring to minimise large set ups to the exclusion of many other exhibitors. 3. For ring access there are to be no more than three gazebos joined together without a walkway. 4. 4. Saved space not occupied at the commencement of the show maybe occupied by any exhibitor. 5. No ropes, mats, tarps or other form of marking out is permitted under any circumstances due to safety issues. Anyway I hope you can all consider some of my thoughts, and thanks again for reading the Conformation Corner. If you wish to have anything covered in this article then please let me know. Until next time. Jason Moore

RETRIEVING AND FIELD TRIALS

R AFT NOTES WR IT TE N BY: DIAN E MCC ANN Field Trial Season The first Saturday in April signals the start of the field trial season for utility gundogs and pointers and setters that hunt Victoria’s native stubble quail. If you have never seen a gundog out in the field doing what it was bred to do then I strongly encourage you to contact a trial manager and come along for a look. The dogs amazing natural abilities, their intense desire and competitiveness and their working as one with their handler is a joy to behold. Below is an extract from a report on the 2018 National Utility Gundog championship that was conducted in Victoria in June 2018 and judged by renowned utility gundog breeder and trainer Elio Colasimone of QLD. This article was written by Elio and I thank him for allowing its use. Background Utility Gundogs are sometimes referred to as hunt, point and retrieve or versatile hunting dogs. They have developed a wonderful reputation throughout the hunting world, especially in North America, South America, Europe and places such as Australia, South Africa and New Zealand as the all purpose breeds that cover the needs of many hunters admirably. While the skills of utility gundogs are broad and these dogs are used in many different ways, including deer hunting and tracking game, licensing data and social media output suggest that in places like Victoria and other parts of Australia, their major work revolves around the hunting of quail, duck and small fur such as rabbits, hares and foxes.

8

Dogs Victoria | April 2019

Virtually all breed standards amongst this group suggest that these dogs should be equally good on land (pointing game) as in water (retrieving wetland birds) and field trials attempt to assess exactly that. After a hiatus of seven years due primarily to poor seasons, the ANKC 2018 National Utility Gundog Championship was held in north central Victoria in wheat stubble paddocks. Nine dogs were eligible but with one dog from Western Australia scratched, the competition began with seven GSPs and one Weimaraner. All are highly skilled, highly polished elite gundogs handled by some of the best handlers that Australia has. The competition involved two rounds of field work on stubble quail on day one and the wrap up of some water work on day two for the dogs that had managed to get through. The stillness of the conditions made it hard for the dogs to pick up the bird body scent even while using the classic high head and drawing in to hold birds without pressure. A lower head height was at times equally effective in the still conditions. Nevertheless, all dogs went about the business of finding the stubble quail with stylish purposefulness. James Saliba’s Yorifeld Rose of York was one to come into a good patch of game early in the day and soon had finds, flushes, retrieves and backs. These were completed in an efficient, stylish manner including a lovely piece of roading and slick retrieving.

RETRIEVING AND FIELD TRIALS

Some standouts during the competition included:

The winning dog maintained uniform balance and quality over the two days including the water work.

Congratulations to both James Saliba and Diane McCann for completing all tasks.

Steve Burke’s GSP producing a classic intense point at speed that almost turned the dog inside out.

Diane McCann’s GSP ‘Rafa’ handling the water work with precision and aplomb.

1st

YORIFELD ROSE OF YORK (James Saliba)

Russell Thomas’ GSP bitch producing exceedingly stylish points.

2nd

TOPNOTCH RAFAEL (Dianne McCann)

Conrad Robb’s remarkable ability to control and extract his Weimaraner from potential strife when working close to another dog making game.

We saw some classic backing from various distances from most dogs, including a remarkable piece of work from David Blacker’s GSP ‘Opal” which backed from considerable distance and didn’t require control.

Damian Waldren’s ‘Maggie’ maintained an excellent range and quartering pattern with intensity and speed which was of extremely high quality.

OBEDIENCE, TRACKING & ENDURANCE

OTEC NOTES WR IT TE N BY: DAWN HOWAR D A large contingent of triallers from Victoria, descended on the Bega Valley and Sapphire Coast trials held at Bermagui during February. The weather was perfect sunny in the day time and cool at night. The very friendly atmosphere and the smooth organisation were impressive. There were over 100 entries at each of the six obedience trials plus a great entry for the two rally trials. Here the grass and grounds were perfect! Among the many Victorian success stories included James Soo and Raven (Pawsitive Broadway Baby) who got their first CCD pass on a score of 90; Rebecca McGroarty with Char (Adderslot Midnight Charmer) who gained a 180 in UD, she also gained a 191 in open and with Roughy (Adderslot Rough N Ready) who gained a 96, 88, 94 and

10

Dogs Victoria | April 2019

95, plus the CCD title; Sue Hatfield and Ziva (Ellagant Great Minds CD) who gained a 186 in open. Anne Mann and Rhythm (Ellagant Great Rhythm UD RE TD) got an open pass on the last day on a score of 186 - Anne had much more success in the show ring than obedience this time around! Marta McKenzie also got a UD pass. Russ Grosvenor with Killara Miss Fisher CD RA TD also got two 1st places in rally excellent, one on a perfect 100 score, followed by a 96 score; Alan Tee also gained an open pass and title with Ruby; Urs Rhyn was very pleased to get a CCD title with Elke (Dual Ch (T) Killara Summer Wine) with at least two 96 scores, and yours truly gained a novice pass of 189 with Solo (Tr Ch Killara Splash The Cash CCD RN TSDX).

OBEDIENCE, TRACKING & ENDURANCE The UD and UDX entries were amazing. I judged 14 in UDX and 23 in UD, plus 30 in Open on different days. The UD and UDX dogs were of a very high standard as well. In UD in particular, the number of rarer breeds was amazing. In one UD class I had an Affenpinscher, Pomeranian, French Bulldog and an Irish Red and White Setter. All working at a very high standard. Interesting, that many UDX and UD dogs were entered in multiple classes. Dogs came from a variety of places including Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. Plus, Bathurst, Albury/Wodonga and other more remote areas. Great opportunity for people from many areas to mix together, swap ideas and celebrate achievements which included a 57th wedding anniversary for Clive and Pam Makepeace. It was very busy though.

IN THE LIBRARY

LIBR ARY NOTES WR IT TE N BY: C L AR E HO DG ES During our time out, the library volunteers have been busily working away on getting our pedigree archive in shape. We now have all our pedigrees sleeved by breed and date order for you to view. We also have received a few lovely donations including a self-printed book on the history of the ban and the subsequent raising of the ban on the German Shepherd dog in Australia. This volume is full of reference articles and newspaper clippings and various other references and is a very interesting insight into the long journey of the German Shepherd in Australia. We have also had a number of other books donated and hope to soon be on our way to getting some new titles. We have also been very fortunate to receive a lovely cash donation from the Dalmatian club of Victoria.

TOP DOG HANDLING PE TER FROST

Long time Afghan Hound breeder, Peter Frost, has just donated his newly released manual to the Dogs Victoria Library. Aimed at improving exhibitors’ dog show handling skills, the material in his manual is based on Peter’s own experiences plus the vast knowledge gained by conducting classes since the 1980’s. It is based on the philosophy of an American icon in this field, C. Bede Maxwell who wrote: “The stars in the heavens are not more numerous than good prospective show dogs that have been ruined by poor management.” This manual is aimed at those who are currently showing dogs, no matter what their ability. It is also handy for beginners who wish to learn the art of showing dogs, those who wish to gain more experience, and anyone who is having problems exhibiting a particular dog. Its well-proven techniques are mixed with many great tips contained within the 128 pages of this soft covered, self-published manual. There are also many useful diagrams and pictures demonstrating the text. Perhaps an updated version with a different layout and a section on puppies would assist the expansion of this vast subject. Unfortunately, too many of our most experienced dog people leave the dog world without passing on their years of know-how in specialized aspects of dogdom. Certainly, many exhibitors will benefit from the time and effort Peter has spent committing his skills to paper. Priced at $49.95 + postage, it is excellent value, especially for those not able to attend Peter’s classes. Peter can be contacted at pcfrost@bigpond.com. Alternatively, thanks to Peter’s kind donation, his manual is now available for perusal or loan at the VCA Library. Jane Harvey www.JaneDogs.com 14
