FROM THE PRESIDENT WAYNE FLEMING the supply of services to Dogs Victoria. A number of changes have already been identified and will progressively be implemented.

I thought I would take this opportunity to update members on the progress of filling the vacant Chief Executive’s position. As members would be aware the ability of Dogs Victoria to retain Chief Executives is poor, with five former Chief Executives in the past 10 years. This lack of continuity is having a dramatic effect on progressing long term planning as well as causing disruption within the office. Rather than just advertise the vacancy in the press immediately, Management Committee has decided to do a total review of the position and examine reasons for this high turnover. A number of extremely positive meetings have been conducted including seeking advice external to Dogs Victoria. Hopefully by next month I will be able to provide members with Management Committee’s decisions on this matter. Members may remember that in the past there was a monthly Management Committee update in the Gazette. This will resume next month with one of our new committee members, Peter Frost, accepting the responsibility for this task. Another review taking place is in the Finance area. Management Committee in conjunction with the Finance subcommittee has requested that all lines of expenditure be reviewed. For example, one area currently being examined are the contracts for

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bruno and Colin for their outstanding services to Dogs Victoria and we will no longer see their friendly faces around the grounds. To Bruno and Colin, on behalf of the members and the Management Committee I wish you all the very best for your future. Don’t forget our seminar series continue this month, with the next seminar to be held on Monday 8 July at KCC Park commencing at 7pm. The seminar will be conducted by Dr Robin Stanley from Animal Eye Care.

DOG LOVERS SHOW 3-5 May 2019 Everyone plays a part in promoting their breed and we thank everyone who volunteered their time at the 2019 Dog Lovers Show. This event is a wonderful opportunity to educate the public about purebred dogs and responsible dog ownership as well as the many sports on offer to our canine family members. We are looking forward to more breed clubs and members participating in 2020.

RO.CH FS.CH HTM.CH Cloudforest Jaeger CD PT RAE or Kai, The Boy or just Bub to those who knew him. Kai wasn’t a show dog, his forte was performance sports. The hours and hours of training shone through in his trial results and the special bond we had. I couldn’t have asked for a more loving and devoted boy. His sporting career covered five sports and his achievements are amazing for a dog his size. Our training at Western Port saw Kai as a sort of “bomb proof” dog in which we would work with dogs with “issues”. His gentle nature and trust in me saw him help anxious dogs. For example, Kai would lie on the ground and I could treat the wary pup when they stepped towards him or sniffed him. All the while Kai has my trust in that he’s not been in any compromising situation. We did obedience for a while but opted out with two passes in open. Jumping 700mm was not suitable for a dog with 55kg of power. He loved doing Rally O and 6

Dogs Victoria | July 2019

one of his best results was the last two passes required for RAE back in 2013. We did the required four rings achieving a combined score of 399/400 to gain his title. Came back in 2016 to do the new levels of Masters and Champion. Competed in the six trials in Geelong held over a full weekend. Won all three rings Saturday finishing with a perfect score to get his Masters title and highest aggregate for the day as well. Sunday was a repeat performance winning all three rings, getting three champ points as well, then winning highest aggregate for the day again. We went through the first levels of herding really well. Our PT runs were close to perfect and we were ready to do HSA’s but we had a setback when I nearly lost him to bloat and a full torsion. Never got back to doing herding unfortunately. His exploits in dancing were amazing getting high scores and plenty of accolades. We achieved the first perfect

COVER STORY score in Victoria of 180 in Heelwork to Music, won the first ever Nationals with our Heelwork to Music Advanced routine. We were awarded 175/180 which gave us the Highest in Trial award as well. His smouldering good looks along with that big smile got him a lot of attention where ever we went. He was perfect for meet and greet because he had such a calm nature about him and there has been plenty of public attention since his first expo back in early 2009. More recently at the Dog Lovers Expo, people have come JUST to see Kai. A mother and daughter cried because he reminded them of their Bernese who recently passed. Kai lay on the floor with the daughter as she wrapped her

arms around him and wept. He was very receptive to her sorrow and cuddled into her even more. There is so much more to Kai and only those who were really close saw the quirkiness between us. I had the heart breaking decision to let him go March 10th due to megaesophagus (ME) and secondary aspiration pneumonia (AP). To say I miss him is an understatement. Will I ever fully get over his loss… no. But I will start a new chapter in the near future.

Kai was an integral member of our club and participated in all our events - from social activities and fundraising through to breed education. Kai and Sue were there front and center every year at the Dog Lovers Show proudly sitting and allowing members of the public to pat and cuddle him. He would then do his “rounds” to the many exhibitors and have his photo taken to help them promote their products. He was so photogenic. He was a regular on our monthly club walks leading the way. Many of our new club members who were still waiting to get their Bernese loved the opportunity to walk Kai. As he got older Kai would lead the puppies and older dogs on a short walk and wait for everyone else to return so he could enjoy more tummy rubs and entertain our club members with his repertoire of tricks Kai’s gentle temperament was a key in the rehabilitation of many of our clubs rescue dogs It was like just by being around him they could sense everything was going to be OK. Kai would sit looking longingly at the BBQ during our many club fundraisers. Drawing so much attention with his long flowing coat and sheer size he helped us raise many $1000’s for our club. Kai was that once in a lifetime Bernese. His gentle nature and the incredible bond he had with his owner Sue was so beautiful to watch. He excelled in so many different dog sports/ disciplines and always with a smiling face and wagging tail. Affectionately known as Dr Kai throughout our club due to the many titles he has - we always joke there are more letters than the alphabet - Kai was more than just a competitor. He was a breed ambassador like no other.

www.dogsvictoria.org.au

Kai was undoubtedly the Grandfather of our club and our Veterans Parade this year will not be the same without him. Kai is missed greatly by our club members and also many of their dogs. He was everyone’s buddy and we are so proud that this beautiful and talented boy was a member of our club. Written by Bernese Mountain Dog Club

CONFORMATION

CONFORMATION CORNER WR IT TE N BY: JASON MOOR E Hello and welcome to the July edition of the Conformation Corner!

entries? I think it’s a great way for breeders to show off the hard work they’ve put into their breeding programs.

Once again, it’s another busy month of shows ahead, with many shows being held across Victoria. I wish you all the best of luck and hope you have a pleasant time showing.

Fundraising Efforts For the majority of 2019 it’s been great to see a sausage sizzles being conducted at most of the shows held at KCC Park. It’s an excellent fundraising initiative that’s been organised by Dogs Victoria that’s become a huge success. Just recently at Caulfield Kennel Club, the Friends of the Park committee was able to raise over $1,000 in a single day! These fundraising efforts for the KCC Park have not gone unnoticed too, with improvements being made to the lawns and some brand new off lead areas that all members can benefit from. I’m excited to see what else is in store and not just at KCC Park but at Bulla too. I wish to thank all those members that regularly volunteer and for all those dog clubs that have donated both their time and financially too. Although I do hear and read occasionally of members criticising the new improvements, which I understand will happen as you can’t please everybody. However, we can only improve with what we’ve got, so the best way of you as a member solving your criticism is by putting your hand up and joining in. Remember, we’re a member organisation, we’re in this together. If you think something can be done better then please step up and give the hard-working committees a hand. It’s time for my fellow members to stop thinking what the dog world can do for you, but what you can do the dog world.

Junior Kennel Club of Victoria A significant Conformation event held during the year is the Dogs Victoria Junior Handler State Final, hosted by the Junior Kennel Club of Victoria on Saturday 6th of July. The State Final is the culmination and celebration of children participating at Conformation Shows in Victoria. Being the former president of the Junior Kennel Club, I know how hectic and frantic the day can be! Congratulations to all our winners, I am sure all of Victoria will join me in wishing the State Final winner all the best at the National Final later in the year. Birthday Celebrations During July, two breed clubs will be celebrating their 30th birthdays - Metropolitan Canine Association and the Lyndhurst Canine Country Club, both clubs that have always hosted fantastic shows with friendly atmosphere. On top of that, Heidelberg & District Kennel Club will also be hosting their 90th Championship Show, a significant feat! As I have touched on previously, we are facing an environment of declining entries and clubs struggling to run shows. We need to cherish and celebrate these moments, I wish all the best of luck to all the exhibitors at those shows and above all else, enjoy your day! Bred By Exhibitor Class On Saturday 18th May, the Ladies Kennel Association hosted their annual championship show at the KCC Park and received a strong entry of 775 dogs. I say this is a strong entry because entries at Bulla/KCC Park this year has been averaging in the vicinity of 500-600 dogs, a decrease from previous years. I cannot pinpoint the exact reason why LKA received a strong entry (whether it was the judges, date or venue), but they’re one of the few metropolitan clubs to have hosted the bred by exhibitor class. I for one thought it was a great idea and was lovely to see big line-ups for the best bred by exhibitor class. Perhaps clubs that are struggling for entries may look at hosting this class in attempt to boost 8

Dogs Victoria | July 2019

Lastly, whilst I’m still on the topic fundraising, I think we need to continue to find other ways of raising funds for our organisation. Simply speaking, we need more than just sausage sizzles, and more dog shows. We can’t rely on having more dog shows on the calendar to do this, we as members have limited time and limited funds and simply can’t attend nor afford every single show or eat a sausage in bread at each show either. Therefore, I task those who read this column, if you know of something that we can do to help fundraise them please let me know. Please come find me, or send me an email to settmore@gmail.com, I’m more than happy to listen! Anyway, I hope you can all consider some of my thoughts, and thanks again for reading the Conformation Corner. If you wish to have anything covered in this article, then please let me know. Until next time.

SEMINAR SERIES IN REVIEW

SEMINAR SERIES IN REVIEW WR IT TE N BY: MARGAR ET G R AY Dogs Victoria is delighted with the membership response to the two recent seminars, both presented at KCC Park by Dr Stuart Mason of Monash Veterinary Clinic. These seminars are open to members only and live streaming provides access for country members and those unable to attend on the night. In addition, members can access both the video and seminar notes on the Dogs Victoria website. Audiences have numbered around 80 members with 50 following the live stream with feedback, including questions provided in real time. The live stream for the second seminar, has seen an improvement in the technology so don’t be put off by the first seminar quality. We thank Dogs Victoria for sourcing such a good company to work with. The first seminar, “When should my dog be Desexed” provided current scientific findings valuable for breeders and puppy families. The beneficial impact of sex steroids, oestrogen and testosterone in the growth and development in both genders is well researched and accepted by veterinary surgeons. Skeletal structures - long bones, joints and soft tissues are benefited by desexing after puberty and reduce the risk of surgery for hip dysplasia and cranial cruciate ruptures. Mammary tumors, pyometra, behavior issues, incontinence in bitches, prostatic tumors and cancers generally were discussed with many questions to Stuart both formally and personally at the end of his talk. Stuart emphasized that spaying and desexing should be based on medical issues of the individual dog as well as ethical and cultural issues of the family and their particular circumstances.

“Neonates should be warmed and their temperatures checked before each feed”. Canine Herpes Virus (CHV) was discussed in some detail including its impact on failure of the bitch to become pregnant or resorb puppies. Management and treatment of affected puppies is covered in detail and temperature control, up to 37-39 degrees serves as a management tool with the higher temperatures limiting viral replication. The virus can affect both males and females and can be difficult to identify as many affected dogs who become carriers can then shed the virus intermittently under times of stress. This is a wider scope topic and as part of our concern to know the status of our breeding dogs the Committee can look for more contributors on CHV as either a stand alone topic or part of a future seminar on vaccinations and immunology. The Education Sub Committee has planned seminars on Arthritis and the Elderly Dog, Eye Diseases, and Reproduction. The committee, through DV, is also interested in supporting clubs to promote planned educational opportunities. The Education Sub Committee values your feedback about suggested topics for seminars as well as other activities you would like considered. Notes and live streaming videos from these lectures can be found under “Member Events & Education Programs” on the Dogs Victoria website. Wendy Johnson and Margaret Gray Education Sub Committee

The second seminar topic was Care and Diseases of the Neonate. Many members who attended would have come with considerable experience, especially in relation to puppy rearing, however it was a wonderful opportunity to update with the latest in good management practice. The importance of optimal body temperature, cleanliness and parasite control is well known but Stuart was able to highlight how fading puppy syndrome and infections can be significantly impacted by shortcomings in these areas. Stuart’s notes emphasis the importance of draft free whelping areas with optimum temperature; he recommends that

OTEC NOTES WR IT TE N BY: DAWN HOWAR D trial so that paddocks that had been seriously droughtaffected had a healthy cover of grass. Then came the wonderful Wodonga gala TSD event. The parks are just beautiful. The forefathers of the city had great foresight. The parks are carefully planned and well maintained. Miraculously, the weather was perfect for every day of the WDCV and Wodonga trials. In fact, it was unseasonably warm at times. We might have to consider carrying water for our canine friends in future if the weather continues to be mild in winter. That is a serious issue. I judged at two trials late last year in areas that were in severe drought. Dogs still worked, but needed water along the way.

What a great couple of weeks. The obedience trials have seen some very successful teams. After the huge event of the German Shepherd National, there have been some very successful and much more relaxed, restricted to group and breed trials. The Hungarian Vizsla Club had some good results. Very sad that the current trial managers have resigned, after doing a great job for several years. The club needs a volunteer to keep the show running. The Labrador Club, the Border Collie Club, and the Working Dog Club of Victoria all had very successful and well organised trials, then came the Mornington Obedience Dog Club trial, where there were a few minor issues, but some very good doggy results were recorded. The tracking season has truly arrived. The first open Track and Search trial was held by the Tracking Club of Victoria, based at Ballarat, then the Knox Obedience Dog Club’s Tracking Trial at Haddon. The Working Dog Club of Victoria has held a tracking trial based on the Mornington Peninsula for many years. This year, the main property become unavailable, and at one stage, the trial looked like being cancelled. Then Di and Bob Cameron quickly came to the rescue and offered their beautiful property at Yarck. Great move beautiful scenery, great camping area, and a bus was organised one night to take us all to and from dinner at the Yarck pub. Also, very handy to have a farmer who is knowledgeable about tracking to help set out the tracks. Fortunately, there were good falls of rain prior to the 10

Congratulations are in order for our two new Dogs Victoria Master Instructors, Lorna Piper and Ann Marriot. They will be an asset to Dogs Victoria. The two Sues, Sue Collier and Sue Murray have taken responsibility for co ordinating this program, with the assistance and guidance of Lea Cogley. This program has been slow to evolve, mainly due to the OTEC members being fully occupied with other equally important programs. Now we have a sub group to lead the way. Watch for future lectures to involve our club instructors. It must be noted that the clubs train the instructors and Dogs Victoria gives them an accreditation. Congratulations and good luck to our Dogs Victoria Obedience and Rally judging trainees; Dearne Jackson, Lisa Sinclair, Merrae Balaam, Maribeth Murphy, Michael Hayes and Libby Hotchin. They all passed the recent written examinations with flying colours, with scores ranging from 96% to 100%. We wish them well for the practical assessment at KCC Park on June 22nd. On a more serious note When booking OTEC equipment, please contact Dawn Ayton keldoone@bigpond.com or 0408 375 526 Please make sure the equipment is looked after. It belongs to us and is our property, for us to use. If we don’t look after it, it won’t be available.
