FROM THE PRESIDENT WAYNE FLEMING I would like to send belated best wishes to Sandra Mashford who celebrated her 80th birthday recently. Sandra is known to us all as an All Breeds judge, convenor of the Lyndhurst and Sunshine Kennel Clubs and Chairperson of the Night of Nights committee, just to name a few!

The Business Manager will report to the Chief Executive and will be tasked with overseeing the daily business activities which includes office and facility management, improving business functions, training heads of departments and managing and controlling budgets to optimise expenses. Following an intensive interview, I can further announce that Steve Moustos, Finance Manager and current Acting Chief Executive has officially been appointed to the newly created Business Manager position. On behalf of the Management Committee I wish to congratulate Steve.

Happy birthday Sandi! Further to my July report I can now give an update on the progress of filing the Chief Executive position. As mentioned previously Management Committee has decided to do a total review of the position and examine reasons for the high turnover of Chief Executives over the last 10 years. At the same time, we have been working with an external consultant to review the whole structure of the office, including the Chief Executive position, and have conducted a number of sessions to map out a plan for the future.

The vacant Finance Manager position will no longer be part of the new structure. Furthermore, at the time of writing, the Chief Executive position had been advertised.

COVER

I can now announce that we have decided to create a new position of Business Manager as well as retaining the position of Chief Executive.

CONFORMATION

CONFORMATION CORNER WR IT TE N BY: JASON MOOR E Hello and welcome to the October edition of the Conformation Corner! We’re in October already, and this year has seemed to have flown by. I hope you all had a successful time at the Royal Melbourne Show last month, and we can now look forward to the rest of spring. Agricultural Month As I wrote last year, October is the ‘Agricultural Show month’ of the Dog Show Calendar, as there are very few shows held at KCC Park or Bulla, it makes way for all the Agricultural shows held right across Regional Victoria. There are over 10 to go to! The towns range from Seymour, Kerang, Shepparton, Benalla, Kyabram, Mildura, Geelong, Numurkah, Bendigo, Euroa and Cobram. The traditional purpose of the Agricultural Show is the display of rural industry, including livestock and produce with its associated competitions and awards. These shows are an important part of cultural life for these regional towns, as it brings the agriculture and animal husbandry industries together to celebrate and display to the public all our hard work. Some of these Agricultural shows have now been running for over 150 years, it is important that these historic events continue. As a reminder, this is another opportunity where we bring the Conformation Show to the public, we need to all act as responsible ambassadors of the dog community and engage and educate the public accordingly. Despite all the silly and idiotic questions, we may receive, we need to put our best foot forward. Please be mindful how you look after your dogs at public events, as there will be people out there who don’t understand and they may cause trouble.

pass their exams. To those that have failed, do not worry, roll up your sleeves and try again next year. I sadly did not pass my Group 6 ‘Utility’ exam, whilst not great news, it’s not the end of the world. This is something that we all do as a hobby and for fun. It’s not life and death and we are not saving lives. I wish to thank all those exhibitors for bringing dogs out over the weekend, without you, we wouldn’t be able to have tests to conduct! Lastly, congratulations to the Judges Trainee program, this was the first-time exams were held over a weekend and the consensus it was a great success. I look forward to going back next year! Look after your belongings Recently, I’ve been sadly informed that exhibitor’s belongings have been stolen at both metropolitan and regional shows, ranging from purses, wallets, phone and even grooming equipment. Please be aware of your belongings always. It’s disappointing that members of our own community may be doing it, but please be alert and make sure it doesn’t happen to you. Belgrave Memorial Rosettes Belgrave and District Kennel Club Inc honoured two life members, the late Joan and Jack Frost (who held the positions of Vice President & Treasurer) at their 51st Championship show on the 14th September. I was fortunate enough to be a judge on the day for this great club. Memorial rosettes were offered for BIS, BIG, plus BOB, DCC and BCC Miniature Schnauzer. They were active with the club and I congratulate the Belgrave & District Kennel Club for honouring their past committee members in such a touching way.

Therefore, I do hope that each and every one of you can try to attend at least one of these Agricultural shows, to help boost a local town’s economy, display our great hobby to the public, and just have a lovely day out like I always do! Conformation Judges Practical exam results During August, numerous trainee judges sat their Practical Judges Exam for their ANKC accreditation. I wish to congratulate all those that were successful and 6

CONFORMATION CORNER I always find it crucial to honour and pay our respects to fellow members of our community, especially ones that have contributed in a significant way. Without these hard-working members, we wouldn’t have what we have today. First Time for everything? On Friday 2nd August, the Bendigo Kennel Club had to abruptly cancel their show at 5:30pm due to a region wide power outage in Bendigo. I believe this was the first time a dog show has ever been cancelled due to lack of lighting, which last well over 24 hours. However, as always, the show must go on, and the hard-working committee of the Bendigo/Eaglehawk Kennel Clubs need to be commended. Working with the council, they were able to set up temporarily lighting on the Saturday morning allowing all other three shows to proceed as normal. Additionally, the committee needs to be congratulated on the stellar entry of over 900 dogs on the Saturday. These shows are becoming a marque weekend on the dog show calendar. Whilst I sadly didn’t attend this year, I always enjoy going. Anyway, thanks once again for reading this month’s article, if you have any similar stories or views to share with me, then I would be more than happy to cover it.

SHARE YOUR STORY Have you got a wonder-dog? Has dog sports impacted your life in some way? Is your breed club actively promoting purebred dogs in the community? If you have a story you would like to share we would love to see it gazette@dogsvictoria.org.au

OBEDIENCE, TRACKING & ENDURANCE

OTEC NOTES WR IT TE N BY: DAWN HOWAR D At the beginning of August, we had the Dogs Victoria State Trials for Obedience and Rally Obedience. These trials usually attract a good entry, and a lot of work and effort goes to make them as special as possible. This year was no exception and thankfully, the weather was mostly kind. Along with the State Trials comes the Top Dogs of the year. These are run on two different systems. The Top Obedience Dog is awarded in five different categories. This year the winners are as follows: Community Companion Dog: A & K Cogdell’s Vindell Dancing With Mr D CCD RE Novice: Mr Minh Dang’s Milly CCD

Open: Anne Mann’s Ellagant Great Rhythm UD RE TD Utility: AJ Slavin & L Russell’s Dual Ch (O) Ubersein Domination UD RA

Utility Dog Excellent: Kate V Bentley’s Glentress By My Side UDX Congratulations to all these winners and to the place getters and qualifiers who did such a good job in achieving such high overall scores. Many of the scores were amazing and there were many memorable achievements. The Community Companion Dog winner Vindell Dancing With Mr D CCD RE handled by Alex Cogdell went on to win the State Obedience Trial run off. Special congratulations to a popular team. Rally Dog of the Year has a different format. Handlers are invited to submit their 10 best scores. The top 10 teams based on the averages of those scores are eligible to compete in a run off before the State Rally Trial begins on the Sunday. This year the Top Rally Dog of the Year Competition was won by Ross Carlson and Tri Ch (T) (R) Grand Ch Ellagant Great Expectations CDX HT, whose qualifying average score of 99.4 was exceptionally high. And then to top off the day, this team won the State Champion title as well. Congratulations to all the wonderful dogs who qualified for the final. Of course, this is also the tracking season! The Tracking Club of Victoria held its second trial at Inverleigh, with 8

a record entry of over 100 dogs. After a lot of effort by all concerned, they were all squeezed in. The weather was not kind, especially on the set-up day. But everyone worked together and despite the weather there were lots of great results. Then came Westernport Obedience Dog Club’s Obedience and Rally Trials at KCC Park and Bendigo Obedience Dog Club’s Triple Rally trials and Obedience trial. A busy month with lots of success for those hardworking teams. One of the most important tasks that the Obedience, Tracking and Endurance Committee has embarked on is to reformat and run the Dogs Victoria Instructors Assessment scheme. In order to facilitate this, they have formed a steering group to run the Dogs Victoria Instructors’ Assessment program. The scheme has been revised and final practical assessments undertaken. Sue Murray is coordinating the scheme and Sue Collier is organizing the workshops and assessment process. On August 14 the introductory lecture was held at KCC Park and live-streamed. The attendance was very encouraging - 60 people attended and 52 people watched online. Lynn Klecka introduced the scheme and explained the history and Lea Cogley gave practical and theoretical input. Question time revealed that there is great enthusiasm for the process. If you missed this lecture, it is on the Dogs Victoria YouTube channel. Another workshop will be held on 31 August. A written examination will be held on 9 October. Further workshops are planned for 2020. The live streaming was a huge step forward and a great initiative by Dogs Victoria. I was on holidays and was able to watch it seamlessly from a remote station in western Queensland. The whole presentation was very professional, and congratulations are in order for those people who have put the program into action. Thank you to Sal Robinson who provided the lovely photo of Janelle and her happy boy at the State Rally trial. Happy training and trialling. Dawn Howard

AGILITY

AGILITY ON THE MOVE Age of Dog at time of getting AGCH: 7 years old Are you a member of any agility clubs? Bairnsdale & District Dog Obedience Club – first ever Agility Champions at this club Name and date of trial where AGCH obtained: Moorabbin & District Obedience Dog Club 7th April 2019 Name of judge for the run where AGCH obtained: Scott Fletcher Describe the run that got your dog the points necessary to become AGCH It was the last Agility run of the day which was good because Zeus fires up at that time of day. I think I stopped breathing at the startline and half way through he slipped in the tunnel so I thought time might get us again, but being so tenacious he upped his speed and took it home. It was exhilarating! How did you feel when you realised you had got the points? It was a surreal feeling because I never thought I would ever get a dog to that level, especially my first agility dog.

Describe your dog’s personality He loves people and never wants to miss out on attention, the best snuggle buddy, and just an all-round happy boy. Does your dog have any funny quirks? He insists on carrying a toy in his mouth to greet people and to the ring he carry’s his treat bag. What is your dog’s favorite piece of agility equipment? The A-frame as it gives him wings!! What is your dog’s favorite toy or treat? Any Toy that can be destuffed beyond recognition in 5 seconds What do your friends/family/work colleagues say about you doing agility? They are very supportive and cannot believe the time we put into it, every Monday after a weekend my work mates want to know what we have been up too!

Did you know during the run that it was one that would get you AGCH or did you realise later? We needed first place earlier in the day but got second leaving us just short by a couple of points. If we ran clear we had it, but not until the last jump was cleared did I actually breath with relief! Did you have any struggles getting AGCH? Speed on course was my biggest let down…numerous clears only to be lost by meniscal times. Is this your first agility dog? Yes Describe how you started doing Agility I went to the local club to train an obedient dog that I could travel with and found out about Agility. As I have a horse background it filled a missing passion of my life I hadn’t realised was missing! I started at home training with garden stakes and wooden blocks.

FROM THE VET

GALLBLADDER MUCOCELES WR IT TE N BY: D R M IC HAE L B E LL What is gallbladder mucoceles? Gallbladder mucoceles are defined as gallbladders consisting semisolid to immobile mucoid material. When the mucocele expands within the lumen of the gallbladder it causes the gallbladder wall to stretch or disrupts blood flow which in turn causes the wall to reclose and die, if the potential development of the bile penetrates, (due to bile leaking from the gallbladder into the abdomen). The cause of gallbladder mucoceles is largely unknown although lack of mobility of the gallbladder, hormonal diseases and steroid administration can be predisposing factors. The breeds most commonly affected are Cocker Spaniel, Shetland Sheepdog and Miniature Schnauzer, its more common in older dogs with the average age being 10 years. What signs do affected dogs show? The presenting signs vary greatly because the condition develops slowly, some are found incredulity on routine abdomen ultrasounds, whilst others present with acute abdominal pain as result of bile duct obstruction or bile peritonitis. Those with the abdominal pain also often have associated vomiting, decreased appetite and lethargy. Where there is bile peritonitis there is often a fever present.

How are affected cases treated? Removal of the gallbladder is the most common captive procedure and is often essential when bile peritonitis is present. In some cases, depending on the viability of the bile duct and location of the biliary obstruction, joining the gallbladder to the upper parts of the small intestine is an option. In some cases, especially those also suffering with low thyroid levels, medical treatment using antibiotics and products that increase the amount of secretion from the bile has been successful. However, care must be taken when considering use of these products as they may induce a gallbladder rupture when there a biliary obstruction. When continued for a minimum of 4-8 weeks, and the use of low-fat diets can also be beneficial. What are the chances of a cure? Stable patients with an intact mucocele have the most favorable chance of survival and successful heart rate, whist those with septic and bile peritonitis have the biggest mortality rate.

How are affected dogs diagnosed? When blood samples are taken there is often elevated liver enzymes, and bile levels, these levels are indistinguishable from other liver and gallbladder diseases. Cholesterol is also elevated significantly in cases of the bile duct obstruction. In cases where there is an impression of the gallbladder or there is peritonitis a leaking gallbladder there will often be elevated white cell levels. Abdominal x-rays are not useful in diagnosing mucoceles but are helpful in ruling out other liver and biliary diseases. An ultrasound can detect a musocele. If biliary sludge is difficult to differentiate from a mucocele, a cholagogue is used with the ultrasound to increase bile flow.
