YES, IT’S TRUE. HAVING A SUSTAINABLE HOME DOESN’T JUST MEAN doing all the right things on the inside − it also means you have to look outside. Your landscaping choices need to be as environmentally conscience as the choices you make on the interior of your home. So as you start to enjoy (or attempt to bear) the warmer weather in your outdoor space, here are a few things to consider. First things first: Green landscaping is a practice that emphasizes the conscious selection of appropriate plants, water conservation, and the use of fewer resources to blend the landscape into the natural world. The following tips will help you get there. 1. Always recycle. A big mistake homeowners sometimes make in taking on yard projects is forgetting to recycle. Landscaping jobs can produce a lot more waste than one might think. Instead of just tossing out those clippings, branches and old plants; turn it all into mulch by renting a shredder and putting it back into the yard. It can actually make excellent fertilizer. If you’re not in favor of this idea, you can also look for recycled mulch at your local home improvement store. 2. Plant the right things in the right places. An officially classified “green home” is graded not only on what’s inside, but also what’s outside and where it is placed. A strategically planned landscape design can lower your home’s energy and water usage. Large trees, for instance, can provide shade in places where you don’t want the sun heating up your home, and vise versa. You should also try to group plants with similar water needs together to increase efficiency. Finally, the experts say most lawns usually only need one inch of water per week.

3. Use sustainable materials. Experts use the term hardscape to define the stonework portion of a landscaping project, typically including paths, patios, and retaining walls. Well, with lumber costs increasing and forest land in short supply, recycled materials provide both environmentally friendly and economically favorable options for hardscapes. For instance, recycled plastic bender board never rots, it’s less costly than redwood, and it’s faster to install for decks and landscape edging. Broken concrete or recycled bricks are another alternative for paths or walls. These are widely available and are sometimes even free. 4. Don’t overlook exterior lighting. Your landscape and outdoor space can be greatly impacted by your choice of lighting. You should always imagine what the space will look like during the day and at night. Solar lights are the perfect environmentallyfriendly option for outdoor lighting. They are easy to install (no wires or electricity), the sun heats and “charges” them all day, and at night they give off a nice soft glow. Solar lights now also come in a variety of styles, colors, materials and sizes.

Upgrades take a cookie cutter home off the tract If you like your production home’s layout but want to change its interior personality and exterior profile, then dare to be unique and start the demolition, because that’s the only way the old cookie crumbles. Owning a home is still the American dream. An affordable way many of us get into our homes, or acquire more squarefootage bang for the buck, is to buy a tract home or what some refer to as cookie-cutter or production housing. These houses are mass-produced using similar if not identical floor plans and builder-grade materials to keep the costs down. In the past green building has been perceived by many consumers as something interesting to a small group of ecologically enthusiastic consumers and builders. Today most consumers realize that green building practices will save them money, by reducing their use of electricity, gas, and water. Many of these practices will become required building codes over the next few years. More consumers are also now beginning to understand that by selecting sustainable building materials they will save money many times over in reduced repair costs during the ownership of their home. Notably, more home owners are recognizing the benefits of indoor air quality. Remodeling and new home customers are getting excited about, well designed HVAC (heat, ventilation, air conditioning) system, proper and improved moisture controls, (to control mold) and reducing or eliminating VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) and other harmful chemicals for their indoor air. The quality of air we breathe in our homes can have a direct effect on our health. What’s really exciting is that making air quality improvements in new construction or remodeling doesn’t have to increase construction costs. An interesting point is that these home systems work together like an orchestra. Tight construction, improved insulation, better windows, efficient HVAC systems, proper moisture controls, sound roofing, flashing, and exterior finishes all effect each other to improve the indoor air quality and energy efficiency, lengthening building life. Improving the performance for these construction elements saves the owner money. Another cutting edge trend will be Energy Monitoring and Smart Home Technologies. The technology is available now to monitor your energy use in real time. These devices are the equivalent of an energy dashboard or gas gauge. A home owner will be able to see how their family’s energy use is performing in real time. The use of additional technology including smart phones and computers will become more common in controlling, monitoring, and reducing energy use. A smart home will turn off lighting as the home realizes that no one is there, and turn on lighting as it gets dark outside to increase security and control energy costs. A key fob or button for the car can turn on selected lighting as you pull in the driveway offering the desired security while saving energy as lights no longer need to be on all day so we can come home to a lighted house. Appliances, heating and cooling, and lighting can be controlled from a computer or smart phone from anywhere. Another emerging trend becoming more common, is more homes will have a cistern to collect rain water for irrigating their landscaping, which will help reduce our stress on fresh water supplies.
