Designer Showcase
There's something magical about the Bartlett Arboretum. Maybe it's how beautiful it is, or how tranquil.
It could be the sense of its history, or because everyone feels happy to be here. Whatever the reason, you can't miss it, and it's part of why this has been such a fun project to coordinate and witness. Watching everyone's efforts to rejuvenate the Bartlett Homestead has been a wonderful experience. We hope you enjoy seeing it as much as we've enjoyed making it happen. Feel the Magic!
We wish to thank everyone connected with the Bartlett Arboretum and this year's Spring Garden Tour, especially the Board of Directors, staff, committee members, and scores of volunteers who have given so generously with their time, resources, and shared enthusiasm to make this a new chapter of the Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens.

From the Executive Director
The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens
“We are thrilled and excited to have the opportunity to tap some of the
area’s best and brightest professionals in home renovation, interior
design and decorative arts for this most important project at the Bartlett Arboretum. The Bartlett Arboretum is a unique natural treasure of our
community and the homestead once occupied by Dr. Francis A. Bartlett
is an important reminder of the roots for the mission of sustainability, education, and respect for our environmental assets.”
Titled “Garden Rooms by Design – Bringing the Outdoors In," the
botanical theme of the Bartlett homestead makeover is to remind visitors
of the Bartlett's purpose: to show us how connected we are to nature. Its
unique design challenge asked some of the area’s top interior and landscape designers, artists and artisans to “think-out-of-the-box” and conBeautiful new railing generously donated and installed by Nordic Construction, Inc.
sider “green” elements in a "not-so-usual sense” in a re-do of the Bartlett homestead’s charming rooms, staircases, landings, and gardens.
This project is a different kind of designer showcase because it doesn’t
feature the typical mansion or showroom. This is an older, real house
circa 1900 that has been lived-in and will continue to function as an administrative building, historical museum and visitors’ service center for the Bartlett Arboretum.
Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens is a unique natural treasure located in back country Stamford. Its 91 acres of woodlands, display gardens,
notable tree collections and hiking trails are open to the public 365 days a year. The facility offers a number of programs and events annually The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens 151 Brookdale Road Stamford, CT 06903 Phone: (203) 322-6971 www.bartlettarboretum.org

such as the ‘Cocktails in the Gardens Series’ and ‘Summer Concert
Series’ as well as onsite classes for yoga, meditation, photography, sketching and painting. Garden Educational seminars and a free Plant Clinic hosted by the UCONN Master Gardener Program focus on topics like sustainable gardening and preserving natural resources and
habitats. A new 8500 square foot Silver Educational Center has made the Bartlett the centerpiece for environmental education in the greater
Stamford community, with a concentration on nature-based programming and camp activities for children of all ages.

“ A Secret Garden ”
Wanting to create an indoor space that reflects the fullness and beauty of an outdoor garden, Soudi Amini drew inspiration from the lush Persian gardens of her childhood, as well as from her extensive
travels through the Tuscan countryside. The designer’s use of color provides a balance between the
golden warmth of the sun, depicted on the ceiling, and the cool blue hues of the water and sky, used on the walls. The result is a comfortable environment perfect for relaxing. Despite the small size of the room, a mirror tucked behind an arbor flanked by garden trellises gives the illusion of a larger space and

Bringing the outdoors inside is the theme of the designer showhouse at the Bartlett Homestead, built in the 1880's by horticulturist Dr. Francis Bartlett. I am using an outdoor teak garden bench from my lawn. Local artist Eileen Grace painted the slats bright colors to compliment the pink and green pillows with fabric by Cowtan and Tout. An area rug of greens and yellows is on loan from Stark Carpet. Over the bench is an original painting by Eileen, from her private collection. The walls are papered in a creamy yellow striped wallpaper with a hand-painted look from Colefax and Fowler. Installed by Mark's Wallpapering, it will be donated. A new spring line fabric from Manuel Canovas, with flower pots, bright colors, and a barnboard background is featured on the window valance and on the skirt around the sink. The window treatment, skirt and pillows were made and installed by Shamuel Installation. The original light fixtures were left to be reused. I added a sun-shaped mirror and bird cage purchased at an estate sale. The antique pink pickets in the bathroom are from an old fence, found by Eileen Grace. Potted plants and bushes were loaned by Sandy Nielsen of Nielsen's Florist in Darien. It's not always easy being green, but this was a fun, creative project to be involved in, and a pleasure to work on.

“ The Formal Parlor ”
In late 19th and early 20th century homes, the formal parlor room was mainly used as the venue to greet and entertain guests. It typically featured comfortable furnishings, along with an assortment of things which guests might find enjoyable like board games and books. In the Bartlett home it was most likely deployed for a variety of uses to suit the family’s interests and activities. Through use of varied motifs, textures and colors that harken to the expanse and beauty of the farmhouse grounds, it can be imagined that the lady of the house often used the space to entertain friends for tea and cake on a summer afternoon while sharing the fabulous view of her gardens through the majestic picture window. SWID is proud to contribute to the beautiful restoration of this space through the use of period colors, wallpaper and furnishings that help transport visitors to a cherished, more simple time of the home’s heyday.

“ Country Elegance
The luscious natural surroundings of the Bartlett Arboretum and its gardens were the primary inspiration for Agnes and Arek Chrzanowska's complete floor-to-ceiling renovation of the Bartlett Homestead kitchen, transforming the space from a 1930's "country kitchen" into an elegant and functional 21st century entertainment hub, perfect for hosting casual meetings, afternoon teas and more formal gatherings, such as weddings, bridal showers, and corporate events. The multi-color slate floor, the glazed off-white cabinetry, and the finely detailed woodwork were carefully chosen to harmonize perfectly with the more formal entertainment spaces on the first floor the grand entry hall with its gorgeous sweeping staircase, the original main dining room directly off the entry hall and the large formal living room which overlooks the beautiful annual garden beds. Agnes and Arek's main objective was to mirror the original architectural details of the entire house, while bringing in the natural colors and warmth of the Homestead's outdoor surroundings into an efficient and visually pleasing space.
Creating sufficient storage areas to support an increase in room rentals was also an essential component of the project. Therefore the adjoining "office space" will be converted into a galley kitchen during the summer of 2012, containing additional matching cabinetry and stainless steel appliances.

Victoria Lyon Interiors
“ The Studio ”
This designer’s mantra is that everyone deserves an inspirational space to live, work and play in. With
the sun flooding into this room, Victoria thought it just begged to be a place to inspire creativity: an art studio. Starting with the lush abstract Ichter painting, Victoria pulled from its rich colors for her color
scheme. It's pattern reminded her of a butterfly wing, triggering thoughts of other favorite art work which
included butterflies, such as the sculptural wall installations of Paul Villinski and the famous butterfly paintings of Damien Hirst. Both are eluded to in Victoria's own creations in this light-filled, airy space that's just spare enough to offer plenty of room for creative thoughts to take flight.
32
Greenwich Designer Victoria Lyon is as passionate about art and architecture as she is about design. Victoria has been a featured designer at a number of designer show houses and has done projects in houses designed by architects ranging from Philip Johnson and Victor Christ-Janer to Jack West, Toshiko Mori and Marcel Breuer. With one foot in design and the other in the art world, she loves nothing better than the challenge of designing a space to support the presence of a wonderful
art or architecture. Victoria brings her personal warmth, humor, wisdom, collaborative spirit and attention to detail to every project to make sure that the end results are a perfect, and that everyone has had fun in the process.

Meditation: an awareness of the present moment _ The Being Consciousness. The Meditation Retreat is a departure from my usual design projects and is, for me, a labor of love. It is a gift you can give yourself. The color purple is a symbol of spirituality and also represents the second Chakra or Third Eye (inner guidance, intuition, clarity). The circle pattern seen throughout the room represents the Mandala _ a sacred circle _ with no beginning or end and which embodies the transcendental qualities of The Ineffable. The Buddha meditated under the Tree of Wisdom (Bodhi Tree) to attain enlightenment. The natural straw products and plants are an acknowledgement and appreciation of nature. A Meditation Retreat can have a Moroccan or Asian Theme, for example, and can include an outdoor area. An outdoor meditation area can be particularly beautiful. Please enjoy the peace and harmony you find here.

“ The Bali Closet ” Inspired by the edifying design of the Bartlett landscape, we've crafted a closet filled with Agabhumi
accessories designed to be worn in multiple ways. Utilitarian design is an Agabhumi hallmark. Much like the design of an "edible garden" or a "moon garden", we design our fashions to give our customers a
variety of looks at a minimal expense. We've added lavender and rosemary plants for fragrance, height,
color and spice! The orchid plant evokes the lovely waterfall garden at the Ibah resort in Ubud, Bali, resplendent with orchids spilling off of the walls. The moss lining inside the closets adds whimsy and color. Overall, our goal was to delight and surprise you at every turn, in every drawer and across each bar of clothing. Please enjoy our Bali landscape in our closet full of dream accessories.
