esigned by Samira Rathod, her Dad’s house is serene, playful, quiet and whimsical - all at once. The close attention to detail in this home is palpable, which reveals itself slowly. Samira creates a visual disconnect through varied textures and materials. Juxtaposing her own aesthetics along with her dad’s requirements she has meticulously designed each element in this home, from the furniture and lights, right down to even the door handles. Conceived by Neogenesis and Studi0261, a farmhouse in Surat is designed to settle into the landscape rather than make its presence felt. Devoid of unnecessary colour and embellishing, the design team use wood and exposed concrete as their textures of choice. With minimum fuss they craft an unpretentious haven that has an innate sense of geometry and purpose. The home engages in a dialogue with nature on many levels and makes itself one with the environs that embrace it. In this age when most are transfixed to their retina display screens for long hours, the Atmantan retreat on the outskirts of Pune provides much needed respite. Forced to leave all gadgets at the proverbial door, the oasis has a wellness formula that guarantees bliss. Adding to the experience is the fact that Atmantan is set amidst 40 acres of lush greenery and perched on a gorge surrounded by hills. Oxygen rich plants dot the landscape while minimalistic architecture enhanced by natural light and large fenestrations brings nature’s bounty indoors. The interiors though restrained, use materials like natural stone and wood in earth tones reflecting the mountains around. Do make a trip to this getaway - it’s a tonic for the mind, body and soul. Two and half years is a short span to make a mark in a field like architecture, and can only be achieved with unequivocal talent and distinct sensibilities. Eliza Higgins and Cyrus Patell set the foundation of their firm CollectiveProject in 2013, but even before they established their practice in Bangalore, the duoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true potential was duly recognised when they won the second prize in the Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) competition. Both of them after completing their Masters from Yale University and garnering substantial experience from acclaimed architectural firms, decided to synergise their individual strengths and knowledge to offer contextual and concept-driven design. The firm stresses on detailing, site specific solutions, and collaborative interaction. Each space designed by the firm irrespective of its scale - has a distinct narrative. For example, the Ekya Early Years preschool which was repurposed from an old industrial building performs the role of an architectural interface for learning, albeit in a playful manner; while a narrow strip of land in a residential plot that was transformed in a densely planted reading pavilion offers respite from urban clamour. In this interview, we discussed with the architects their inspirations, aspirations and the future direction of CollectiveProject as a design firm.

Despite being a young practice, CollectiveProject boasts of a remarkable portfolio. How does each new project inspire your practice? Please walk us through the process. As a young practice our design philosophy is still evolving. Process is incredibly important to us and we take a fresh look at each new project staying clear from pre-conceived notions of what the final outcome will be. We do not have a fixed approach but spend a great deal of time working to distil the essence of the project through understanding the site and active dialogue with the client. Landscape and spatial narratives are very important to our work so we are constantly working to blur the lines between landscape and building.

Independently and as a team we constantly question ourselves and each other to ensure we are creating spaces that are sensitive and unique. For us, each project brings with it a new set of challenges which pushes us farther and inspires us to be better.

What according to you are your individual strengths that you bring to the drawing board? The way we work is completely different, not only because we come from contrasting backgrounds/cultures and experiences but in the basic way we are programmed to approach problems. Cyrus is fantastic with working through spatial design and details. Elizaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s process is less linear - she is always evaluating different approaches. We have found a great balance where we do the best work together and are both very active on each project.

It is imperative to be self-critical of the work you are producing to find creative solutions to the challenges that arise, irrespective of scale.

A designer has to be at his/her creative best while conceptualising a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s space. How was the experience of designing Ekya Early Years? Apart from designing for Children, Ekya Early Years is also an adaptive re-use project that transformed an abandoned, somewhat dilapidated watch factory on a 2 acre site into a colourful and engaging space for learning. The design capitalised on the beauty of the old industrial building by retaining the existing shell as a framework for spacious, naturally ventilated and sunlight filled classrooms; at the same time crafting a unique learning experience for 2-6 year olds. Possibly the most rewarding moment working on the project was on the first day of school when we were able to see the children engaging with each space/element and fully realising the impact it would have on their quality of education - especially in an urban environment. Ekya Early years will always be a very special project for us and we look forward to working on other schools in the future.

Do you believe the scale of a project is detrimental to creativity? What are the creative difficulties working on, for instance, an institute as opposed to a small apartment? It is imperative to be self-critical of the work you are producing to find creative solutions to the challenges that arise, irrespective of scale. Currently we are not geared towards larger scale projects purely because of the size of our studio but we do not see scale as being necessarily detrimental to a projectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success. There are so many factors that impact the design/creative process - it would be unfair to attribute it all to scale.

Any one building material or technique that fascinates you and would like to apply in your practice someday? Perhaps the most primitive form of construction, but mud walls have always been an interest to us. We would very much like to explore rammed earth construction in a very contemporary/ sophisticated format like Tatiana Bilbao in Spain or Rick Joy in the US.

What are you currently working on?

A structure designed by another architect which continues to have an impact on you every time you visit… Still in its nascent stage, how do you envision the practice to evolve in future? Any plan to venture in allied fields? Our hope is to position ourselves as a boutique studio that focuses on design, detailing and quality execution. Ideally, we would like to be in a place where we are doing a mix of high-end residential and institutional buildings with a parallel focus on socially relevant projects for communities in need. Currently, we are designing the interiors and landscape design for most of our residential projects which allows us to control a cohesive experience/vision. We are compulsive designers (sometimes to a fault) and are always looking at how we can make something better. As a result, we are constantly sketching ideas at varying scales; furniture/objects but with a busy practice they tend to stay on paper. Over the next year we are going to prototype and evolve some of these designs and look forward to seeing where it takes us!

Cyrus: I enjoy most of Enric Miralles’ work One of my favourite projects is the Igualada Cemetery, just outside Barcelona. Eliza: For me, it would be the Louisiana Museum in Denmark - I love how the structure in completely integrated with the landscape with the focus being on experience and not form. While one is completely removed from their surroundings, there are these beautifully curated and framed moments where the landscape is revealed again as though it is a piece of art. Your favourite architect/designer amongst your contemporaries. Starting a practice is not easy - we admire all the young offices that are taking the risk and contributing to raise the standard of contemporary design in India.

We are currently working on a number of single family homes, two rural schools and a larger mixed use development, across Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Coonoor and Mumbai. Your favourite pick of ‘simple yet smart’ design… Eliza: I was going to say my French Press because I’m craving a coffee right now, but for simple smart + elegant design, the Philippe Starck Citrus Squeezer comes to mind. What do you do in your spare time…any other interests? Spare time?! Unfortunately, starting a design office leaves very little room for anything else! We are at a point where we are trying to find a life/work balance but it’s been hard. When we are able to get away from the studio we both enjoy travelling and cooking. Designing an apartment in Mumbai for her parents had Samira Rathod performing a balancing act, between her own convictions and their personal tastes. The end result is a timeless, functional space which does not compromise on aesthetics.

Measuring up to the expectations of one’s parents is a kind of rite of passage for all offspring, however accomplished. So when Samira Rathod designed this 3,000 sq ft apartment at Haji Ali for her parents, in the best tradition of parents all over the world, they were certainly not overawed by her not inconsiderable design talent. In fact, her father candidly told her, with the insouciant birth right of all parents, “Don’t do what you normally do.”

Celebrated for what she does do, Samira is known for exquisite spaces which have been put together with the intellectual discipline and rigour of a curator. So this sobering comment had her giving thought to what would work best for her parents. “Both are in their seventies and like sheen and gloss in interior designs. But my work is not like that,” she says. “What was more important was that the space be convenient for them to use and be clutter free. I was particularly careful that the height of the various pieces of furniture should be comfortable for them.” All this, while paying tribute to fine living, exquisite craftsmanship and employing unlimited imagination. Samira proceeded to convert the four bedroom apartment into a three bedroom one with a media room. Open on three sides, it had views of the city and the Haji Ali mosque in the middle of the sea. In her scheme of things, a muted grey tonality pervades the space, imparting a winter morning feel.

“We pulled down the walls and rebuilt them with siporex cladding, their exposed surface offers a soft undulating effect due to the way they’re carved.”

The floor is a glossy grey and one bathroom has Italian marble. “That is a nod to my father’s preferences - he would love to have Italian marble all over, whereas I would prefer not to use it at all,” says Samira. “My mother would often say, ‘She’s the architect, let her handle it the way she wants.’ My father is a busy man, so he would disappear after letting loose a characteristic one-liner.” In the living room, several colours and patterns come together in the fabrics used for the upholstery. The floor lamp was designed in-house, from ceramic tubes. The terrazzo flooring recalls an old world feel. The curtains are in khadi silk and cotton, in three layers to enable a control over different levels of natural lighting. The dining table has several steel and copper legs in a complex geometry, inspired by a millipede. The large round lights in the ceiling have been customised, while the low credenza against the wall made out of bison board, makes its own design statement. The black apple atop it is in solid stone.

In the master bedroom, there is a long wooden study table with an interesting detail on its edge, in signature Samira style. The shutters of the wardrobe are in painted Shera board. The lamp on the bedside is fixed to the wall with brackets and has a long arm descending from the ceiling. “Actually we overlooked providing an electrical point next to the bed. Using humble materials for statement pieces through great design and craftsmanship is a Samira specialty. “The bath walls have in situ terrazzo, however, the guest bathroom is in a ground rough terrazzo,” says Samira. A glamorous space, the walls of the latter are clad with sheets of brass.

“The core of my work lies in creating small, subtle details - I enjoy them the most,” says Samira. She delights in adding beauty to some detail that may be seen only for a few seconds a day, such as the front panel of the drawer inside a wardrobe. Taking in all the detailing is like a happy journey of discovery, delighting the senses.

The window is at an unusually low level, enabling a view while also retaining privacy. “The TV room has a large flat panel TV set, meeting my father’s approval. The iconic Eames chair offers comfort for watching movies or listening to music. My father confessed that he is no hurry to leave for work and looks forward to coming home,” says Samira.

Wired To Captivate Self-taught artist Gavin Worth works wonders with a modest material like black steel wire to create two dimensional, fluidic and life-like sculptures; each is infused with its own unique character and tell-tale human emotions.

After a formal training in acting, and a brief stint in the world of performing arts as an actor and musician, designer and illustrator Gavin Worth found his true calling and moved on to the world of sculpting. His extremely dynamic life journey - he was born in Zimbabwe, grew up in New Mexico, and lived in San Francisco and Egypt before moving to Lausanne, Switzerland, where he lives currently - seems to have contributed toward the decision of giving up a promising career in acting and music to foray into visual arts, that too as a complete novice.

Gavin has worked with big names such as Tiffany & Co and Ralph Lauren.

His lifelong passion for sculpting, painting and drawing received the much needed boost when he first saw a picture of Michelangelo’s famous ‘Head of Leda’ in a book. Thus, began a journey of self-learning that has brought him recognition, success and satisfaction in equal measure. “I have been playing music since I was 10 and it’s a big part of my life - I play piano, violin, and guitar, and I love acting as well. When I left university, I kept finding work as an actor and musician, and while it was somewhat satisfying artistically, there was always a quiet, but much deeper voice calling me to the visual arts,” Gavin says about the experiences that altered the course of his life. Sculpture was his first love. He vividly remembers finding books about Michelangelo in the library and being so taken with the images that he saw there, that he saved every penny and the first chance he got, he traveled to Florence to see the ‘David’. It completely changed his life, seeing something so simple and so perfect. And now completing a new sculpture brings him close to that feeling of wonder, time and time again. The 35-year-old artist, however, was not satisfied working with traditional media popularly used by sculptors across the world. “I originally practiced with very traditional media: clay, oils, charcoal, and pencil, but I continually felt that the work lacked a presence. It said nothing new to me and felt tired. I put it all aside and searched for other, uncommon materials to experiment with,” he shares.

Gavin wanted a new visual vocabulary that felt fresh. He was always drawn to a strong sense of line, so when he saw a roll of black steel wire, he knew exactly what he could do with it: create freestanding line drawings. His latest work, “Thirst,” is particularly ingenious: the sculpture reveals two separate images depending on the viewing angle. He is currently exploring ways to add light to his work and develop a series of illuminated wall panels.

There is a truth to these figures that is endlessly fascinating.

Gavin’s freestanding, two dimensional line figurines are truly one-of-their-kind. Since it was an art form he essentially evolved, the journey involved a great deal of self-learning. To Gavin, that learning curve has always been fascinating. “When I first picked up that roll of black steel wire many years ago, I had no idea that the concept would develop to the point that it has. It has been a huge learning curve, but a fascinating one at the same time. I love the feeling of the steel in my hands, and I love shaping it and seeing a sculpture come together. As I finish a series, there is a part of me that is never satisfied - I continually want to go further.” Gavin got his first break when he was commissioned by Lexus to create a series of sculptures to mark their emergence in Brazil. He has since worked with big names such as Tiffany & Co and Ralph Lauren and even qualified as a finalist for the 2014 TED Fellowship. Working on commercial projects is a big part of his journey as an artist. But, when not working on a client’s brief, what is his most favorite subject to bring to life? “I truly love working with clients. The defined parameters stir my imagination. When I am working on a new series, though, I am more and more drawn to nature. I am fascinated with the antithesis found there - how an overgrown forest can be both beautiful and menacing.” The artist in Gavin is deeply inspired by the archetypes from old stories and mythologies and there is a truth to these figures that fascinates him endlessly.

Figurative art is one of the most ancient modes of visual expression.

One sees a lot of human faces and feminine figures in Gavin’s creations. So, what do these sculptures represent to him? “My sculptures are meant to explore the beauty of the human experience in all of its variety, from youth to old age, happiness to sorrow, growth to decay.” He sees profound beauty in moments of human vulnerability and honesty, and these are the images to which he is continually drawn. www.gavinworth.com

With an existing home in the busy heart of Surat subjected to all the accompanying noise and bustle, this 4,000 sq mt site at Dumas, close to the beach, was a contrast in the peace and quiet it offered. “But this was not to be a week-end getaway permanently. Eventually, the client intended to move to this farmhouse and make it home,” says Chinmay Laiwala of Neogenesis. “We’ve tried to merge the structure with the landscape,” adds Jigar Asarawala of Studi0261, which collaborated with Neogenesis on this assignment. “The selection of materials, the way they’ve been used, the size of the openings in the structure…all have been driven by this idea. Consequently, wood has been used, eschewing plywood and laminates, exposed concrete has been left in its natural form and kota stone clads the floor. The verandah has stone pitching and a random rubble masonry wall. All these come together to create a non-fussy, earthy palette. The plinth of the bungalow is high, since the site is deeper than the main road and prone to water logging. Situated close to the beach, the drainage is not adequate. However, the teak wood louvred windows extend from the floor to the ceiling and endeavour to make the home one with the surrounding chickoo tree plantation, when thrown open. Within, the living room is devoid of colour, except for the natural colours of the materials used. The ceiling is in pinewood, while the flooring is mirror polished golden kota. “The client was very reluctant to use kota on the floor.” - ‘This is what is used in bus-stops,’ he said. We had to do some sampling before he was convinced - and the stone subsequently has become only glossier with use, as is customary with kota,” says Jigar.

The courtyard provides a void, to bring in sunlight and ventilation. Flanked by the main corridor on one side and the kitchen on the other, it is located on the northern side of the house and is used as a breakfast spot. “The dead wall provides privacy from the adjacent site and was constructed from granite and kota wastage from the site,” says Chinmay.

A plumeria plant adds greenery as it sprouts from a handkerchief of a lawn, whose periphery is asymmetrically defined by narrow strips of granite and kota. The contrasting light and dark shades of stone create a pleasing linear geometry. The kitchen platform has been cast in concrete, with a counter in granite. With the sun dappled courtyard running its length on one side, it is a dramatic space in browns and blacks. Also on the ground floor, a glass-roofed shower carries forward the open-to-theelements vocabulary. “We toyed with the idea of doing away with the glass roof, but decided against it, as it would add to the maintenance, with more frequent cleaning becoming necessary,” says Chinmay. The shower itself is free standing, positioned on a platform which is a foot away from the surrounding walls.

A spiral staircase to the floor above curls within a tight 6 ft x 6 ft space. “Without touching the walls, it is supported only at its base and at the ceiling. Made of wood and MS, we’ve crunched it to get a twist. Its very curvature has added to its stability,” explains Jigar. The master bedroom has wooden flooring, while the guest bedroom has a floating wardrobe. “Since guest rooms don’t require much storage, we’ve positioned the wardrobes much higher than customary, so that more flooring is visible under them. This created the illusion of a larger space,” says Chinmay.

The shutters of the wardrobes are in wired glass, its subtle green tint in sync with the rest of the colour palette. Clerestory windows above the wardrobes bring in light, while linear tubes at the junction of the wall and ceiling have customised wooden pelmets. The armchairs in both bedrooms were salvaged from a vendor of discarded furniture and all the soft furnishings are by Tarika Asarawala.

In the master bath, a large mirror doubles the space, creating the illusion of two washbasins, sitting back to back. A monolithic granite base supports the basin, creating a minimalistic vocabulary. “In all of our work, we strive to create an authentic ‘sense of place’. Right from the process of making to firing in the kiln is done at our studio in Bhugaon Village near Pune. We adhere to time honoured process of making ceramics. Every piece is handcrafted by us from scratch. From making the clay to preparing the glaze, we ensure that all the ingredients are completely food safe, oven friendly and dishwasher compliant.

When you use a hand crafted mug, it is a communion between you and the artist. A tactile experience where you can run over the undulating throwing lines deliberately left by the maker to give you a feel of the process or observe a line accentuated by change in brush pressure, or discover faint finger prints in the glaze. And when you take a look at our products, you appreciate the sheer beauty of handcrafted.

We also put in a lot of thought in designing our products. For instance, the handle of our mug is designed in such a way that it does not burn your knuckles or slip in any way. Even the teapot and pitchers help you pour liquids of varying viscosity without dripping.

Some of our designs are inspired by Indian food habits and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why you will find plates inspired by thalis, or bowls inspired by handis. Our designs are modern interpretation of original forms - we like to stick to simple, straight forms with very little adornment. The location of our studio on the outskirts of Pune also inspires our myriad portfolio as the element of nature silently seep into our work - for example our glazes Sahyadri Green and Monsoon Blue capture the many hues of mountains and monsoon and the bamboo plants on our studio grounds make for pretty motifs which reflect in our products.

Our work policy is simple - we want our products to be used, cherished and above all, loved every day. Globant, pUNE

The circular shaped reception looks more like a lounge, with the letters ‘Globant’ formed with a LED strip resembling a neon light in handwritten format.

The learning tree designed with FRP mould, acoustic panels and light fittings is an informal collaborative space; Acrylic origami birds on the ceiling make the scenery as real as it could be.

Developed by Beyond Design, here is another office space design inspired by nature. And the inspiration is not just symbolic, but it is everywhere - right from the moss in the reception to the ‘walk in the woods’ towards the cafeteria or the ‘learning tree’ collaborative space to the acrylic birds in the ceiling and the grass floor in the café, every space has a touch of this theme. The Globant technology office in Pune, spread across two floors with almost 40,000 sqft. of carpet area on each level is divided into four quadrants with a steel pipe running on the periphery as a path guide each quadrant having its own collaborative spaces, meeting rooms and phone booths. Each collaborative space is different and every meeting room is in a different shape and configuration. So, while there is a tunnel shaped meeting room with fully upholstered inside, somewhere else it can be just a ‘BOX’ with bar counter and bar stools or a bean shaped room with soft seating. The café is a melting pot for various styles of seating. There is the typical table and chair seating, but there is also the wooden bench seating in one corner, artificial grass seating on the other and a few restaurant type sofa seats.

SOTI, gURGAON The new office of mobile device management firm, SOTI Inc. at Gurgaon serves as its headquarters for the Asia Region. The 51,000 sqft. office space with the capacity to seat more than 450 employees has been designed as a workplace that inculcates creativity and also promotes a fun and learning environment. Designed by the multi-disciplinary firm, Basics, the office is not just about flashy designs but is a blend of architectural and design brilliance. Here, each space offers variety in terms of its design and material usage. For example, the reception combines an interesting mix of a dynamic stone pattern, vibrant colours and rustic finishes. The customized metal ceiling with full height curved glass wall further enhances the space. Earlier, the floor plate of the office was awkwardly split into two separate zones, but this has been smartly outdone by a central reception surrounded by a free-flowing corridor. The corridor not only connects the two disjointed spaces but also creates the semblance of the reception as an island. A casual lounge and a small café were also further carved out along the corridor to create an exciting visual experience around the island. While the décor is colourful, the ruggedness comes from the open ceiling structure. ‘Workspace for Innovation’ is the key theme behind the design. Acknowledging the need for collaboration to generate ideas, Basics has created many break out areas throughout the office space.

GSN Games, bENGALURU

The bike café in the GSN Games office is a perfect hangout to rejuvenate in the middle of work.

Zyeta designed the complex carpet pattern using standard tiles – a unique way to show the relaxed culture of the place.

When it comes to the office space of a social and mobile gaming company, you expect something quirky, colourful and youthful. And Zyeta Studios has created that perfect ambience for GSN Games in Bengaluru. The office has two floors and is designed to accommodate around 330 employees with the aim to create a flexible, open and collaborative environment that blends the functions of work, play and community. Inspired by GSN web and app interface, the entire area is designed with vibrant colours and patterns. The colours are in their finest form of fun and frolic in the tilted Rubik cube pattern on the floor, which then extend on the glass partitions as frosting. Although the workstation spaces are divided up by teams, they are not in siloes as small booths and informal areas help blur the distinction between team areas. There are also plenty of entertainment areas-tucked towards the corner at the ground floor where a badminton court that sits adjacent to the amphitheatre and cafeteria. The first floor has a gym, bike café and many informal and portable spaces such as innovation room, a lounge area and windows sills and benches with soft cushions.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Headquarters, Navi Mumbai DWP Interics won the ‘Transform Asia’ award in Hong Kong for their design of the 1.2 million sqft. Headquarters of the Reliance Jio Infocomm office. Located in Navi Mumbai, this huge office is spread across 11 floors and houses approximately 5000 employees. “The design journey started with a few minor hiccups. Reliance being one of the largest giants in India had some set standards for office decor and work norms. The biggest challenge was to pull them out from the pre-existing and well absorbed cabin culture, “says the DWP Interics design team. In the end, however, the agile office space concept won over with the entire 1 million sqft. office not featuring even a single closed private cabin. Even the working and collaborative areas have been amalgamated seamlessly to encourage this concept of agility. ‘Connecting India’ was the theme for the office design, inspired from the mobile network’s brand values. So, the office interior was designed to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of India, its colourful festivals and the mesmerizing architecture in various states. The collaborative area on each floor has been designed and located exactly in the centre of each floor plate, facilitating maximum interaction. And this area is used to showcase the essence of the state that particular floor represents. From the jaali works of Jaipur to the intricate wood carvings of Chennai, the historic arches of Pune and the colourful kites of Gujarat, this office celebrates the country like no other.

Cybertecture Egg, Mumbai Right at the heart of the Central Business District of Mumbai, Cybertecture Egg built by James Law Cybertecture International for the client, Wadhwa Developers, combines architectural brilliance with intelligent and sustainable building management systems. Its shape was inspired by looking at the world in terms of the planet being a self-sustaining vessel with an ecosystem that allows life to exist, grow and evolve. The unique egg shape is creatively done in the form of a shell structure using a diagrid exo-skeleton that supports column-free floor plates, saving 15% of construction material in the process. This 33,000 square meters office packs 13 stories of which there are three basement levels with 400 car parking spaces. The architecture is sleek and computer designed using evolutionary engineering, creating a building of extremely high quality and geometric sophistication. Within the building, there are many innovative systems such as the Cybertecture health in the washroom designed to keep track of the inhabitant’s health including blood pressure and weight. Cybertecture reality customizes (virtual) views for the building’s inhabitants. Solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines help generate onsite electricity. Water recycling is done through rain water harvesting, sewerage treatment and filtration, and wetland filter beds.

20% of the building’s water consumption is available through water recycling methods.

Intelligence building management systems help create a self-sustaining building, just like the planet that Cybertecture Egg is modelled on.

Riviera TwinStar Square, Shanghai The Riviera TwinStar Square project is located in the Pudong New District of Shanghai, across the river from the Bund and overlooking the historic Shanghai Shipyards site. A key element of the design done by Arquitectonica, was to create symmetrical towers that show balance, order and stability. This site is designed with the intention of integrating a high profile urban space within a new state-of-the-art, highly modern business environment. The main buildings are interconnected by an elevated platform that serves as weather protection for the indoor pedestrian corridor below, and above provides an outdoor public space. The project specifically created a raised basement level of three metres to cater to the height of the Huangpu Riverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flood protection systems. The architectural design is aimed at the needs of the flagship financial tenants, providing an efficient floor plate with consideration to specialized trading floors and private meeting spaces. Although a conventional reinforced concrete frame core wall system was adopted for the tower, some special structural elements have been used for this project - inclined columns are used at the curved elevation face-to-face to integrate the structure into the architectural form.

The twin towers are home to the two banks: Agriculture Bank of China and China Construction Bank.

The faĂ§ade comprises utilized high performance Low-E glass with solar control coating. Natural stone and aluminium cladding serve to add a distinctive patterned feature across the elevations, giving the towers a unique Chinese feel.

The waterfront location and the arched design add to the Riviera TwinStar Squareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s glory as a commercial hub.

Arctia Headquarters, Finland

The buoyant floating office of Arctia’s Headquarters in Helsinki is designed by K2S Architects .

The black metal façade is evocative of the icebreaker ships, and the inside is done with warm lacquered wood symbolising the country’s ship building traditions.

Located in Helsinki, Finland, the Arctia Headquarters won the Architizer’s A+ popular choice award in the low rise office building category. This is an ethereal floating office building in front of the listed main building of the Finnish ministry of Foreign Affairs which was originally designed by C.L.Engel. This headquarters of Arctia shipping crew is situated next to the docked icebreakers, an essential part of the Katajanokka cityscape, beside Merikasarmi pier. The horizontal character of the building and the black metal façade compare elegantly with the image of the icebreaker ships. The floating headquarters relates to the icebreakers but is smaller in scale than the ships. The interior of the metallic ‘ship’ is covered with warm lacquered wood which directly relates to the country’s ship building traditions. An integrated water ballast system ensures that the buoyant office remains at the same level as the dock. The façades of the building are made of specially profiled steel, which is perforated and stamped with abstract ice crystal-like patterns resembling a glacier.

Dear Ginza building, Tokyo Located in Tokyo, Japan, this is one office that even passers-by will stop to take a notice. And, that was the intention anyway. The building site is on the Ginza 1-chome Gaslight Street, which is one street behind the Ginza Central Street. The builder wanted to attract as many people as possible into the street, and the design team from the Amano Design office aimed to include a “slight feeling of strangeness” to it. And the result is the Dear Ginza building that has a crumpled looking façade. As the outside scenery is not favourable and interesting, obtaining openness with glass was decided to be futile. So, a double skin structure was employed, consisting of glass curtain walls and graphically treated aluminium punched metal. The façade becomes a part of the interior decoration and obviates the need for window treatments such as blinds or curtains. By using a double skin, air conditioning load and the glass cleaning burden was also reduced. The abstract flower graphic is used to balance the impression of the façade, to free it up from becoming too edgy. Although individual aluminium punched panels with irregular angles and shapes are used, they all fit into a standard size, resulting in excellent material yield. The coloured LED upper lighting, which is installed inside the double skin, entertains onlookers with different programs depending on the season.

In the neighbourhood of mostly modernist architecture with horizontal, vertical or geometric shapes, the Dear Ginza building has a feeling of strangeness, attracts special attention, and has an appeal as a commercial building.

The Al Bahr Towers, Abu Dhabi

At a height of 145 meters and stacked with 29 stories, the Al Bahr Towers is a great example of creative design based on cultural learnings to address problems of the nature. The highlight of this building, designed by Aedas and constructed by Al-Futtaim Carillion, is the 2,000 umbrella-like glass elements that automatically open and close depending on the intensity of sunlight.

The Al Bahr Towers stand as a testimony to creatively addressing the issue of environmental design, especially in a place such as Abu Dhabi, where there are extreme weather conditions with intense sunshine and temperatures soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. They feature the world’s largest computerised dynamic façade. The design concept is based on the fusion between bio-inspiration, regional architecture, and performance-based technology. Aedas architects have designed a responsive facade taking cultural cues from the ‘mashrabiya’, a traditional Islamic lattice shading device. The computational design team at Aedas have simulated the operation of façade panels in response to sun exposure and changing incidence angles during the different days of the year. Each triangle is coated with fiberglass and programmed to respond to the movement of the sun as a way to reduce solar gain and glare. For the project’s sustainable engineering, and sensitive cultural and urban approach, the towers were awarded the 2012 Tall Building Innovation Award by the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

Like the Hammam - awash in teal tones, lofty arches, patterned tiles, niche lighting and a traditional heated stone bed, all an inspired interpretation of Turkish architecture.

Teâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;-jus, the bistro offering juices and healthy bites through the day is a bright riot of colours with varied seating, while Chantara, the lounge is more formal embellished in golds, pearls and damask. The main restaurant called Vistara with large picture windows framing Mulshi Lake is a mix of muted blues, greys and whites. The handmade wooden chandeliers and Italian black glass tables add a quiet luxury that mirrors the calmness of its location.

Design Archana’s Fashion House, GujArat ‘Contemporary, chic and colourful’ is what defines Archana’s Fashion House located at Vadodara in Gujrat. Designed by Urvi Shah & Associates, the space has been transformed from an old house into a chic retail establishment that has a free flowing aura. A beautiful courtyard greets you at the entrance with fine river finish kota flooring etched perfectly with pink Bougainville. The display area is created by two successive linear bays which run parallel and effortlessly come together. The bay facing the courtyard with a glass façade allows the space to have an expanded view, housing colourful western and traditional clothing. While the rear bay makes for the designer’s cabin and a small space for the tailors and their fine creations. Drawing inspiration from the designer’s love of birds in her garments, cages with lights can be seen hanging all over adding an elegant yet quirky vibe. The boutique reflects the free flowing design concept that fashionista Archana Gupta uses in her colourful western and traditional creations.

Sevilla-The Claridges,Delhi Named after Seville, the famous art and cultural capital of Southern Spain, Sevilla is a very popular Mediterranean restaurant of New-Delhi. Known for its eclectic Spanish cuisine, the space has been designed by Sachi Gupta of Synthesis Design Studio. Inspired by the azure skies and landscape of the Mediterranean, Seville takes you on a romantic getaway which is a perfect blend of outdoors and indoors. Designed on the lines of being a typical Mediterranean town, a small swale has been created to give the space a feel of a riverbank with small cabanas etched with vernacular architecture and textured white benches. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a separate indoor dining space, which has a community table crafted with solid hardwood that takes you back to a timeless era. To sync with a Mediterranean setting, natural candle holders are used all over the space, while the cabana setting features replica of these candle bras which are used in the form of chandeliers. The restobar has a fireplace and wrought iron grills that add to the old Spanish country feel. Minimal accessories allow the design to dictate its own charm. Kudos!

Thanveer Azeez Residence, Kerala The Thanveer Azeez Residence in Kerala is a 2,878 sq ft home designed by architect Vivek PP of De Earth. Created with the intent of providing shelter amidst a natural ambience, this residence is a celebration of nature and bears a cosy and environmentfriendly disposition. The terrace space overlooking the river is a standout feature of the house with a flying roof made of steel and tile. Moving away from being a house which is embellished with polished interiors, this space is designed on rustic lines. Here pastoral finishes giving it an earthy feel and superficial decoration is kept to minimum with every material displaying its own innate character. The wall finishes featuring plaster and putty modulation complement the textured cement flooring executed with the help of local labourers. The use of steel, tiles, cement finishes and stone make the project unique, letting it connect to nature and Mother Earth so intimately that it exudes a feeling of inclusiveness.

A Premier Cinema Destination The Busan Cinema Centre is a landmark that serves as a multifunctional urban hub of cultural and entertainment programmes. Additionally the centre stands out for its ingenious architecture and astute use of technology and therefore, but naturally it also hosts the annual Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). The project, Coop Himmelb(l)auâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first in South Korea, is a confluence of contradictions - it is both open and closed, and public and private spaces alternate effortlessly here. The innovative architecture not only allows this flexibility, but also celebrates it with abandon. Although the buildings support different functions such as theatre, indoor and outdoor cinemas, convention halls, office spaces, creative studios and dining areas, the mix of sheltered and linked indoor and outdoor public spaces unify making it a homogenous whole.

The two large roofs of the centre present an arresting picture and simulate a tantalising sense of flying - one of the roofs measures 60 x 120 metres (the size of a soccer field) and cantilevers for 85 metres. It is evident that Coop Himmelb(l)au has worked its magic, exploring the theme of the roof as a central architectural element. Wolf D.Prix, the Design Principal of Coop Himmelb(l)au, explains the thought that went into the roof’s design, “Already in the Renaissance and the Baroque era the roof is transformed into a cupola, thereby achieving a particular significance. But it was Oscar Niemeyer and Le Corbusier, who defined the roof not anymore as a mere element of protection, but as a frame for the most diverse concepts. In Niemeyer’s house in Rio de Janeiro, the roof does not follow the floor plan, but frames the view of the surroundings and nature. The roof of the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille developed by Le Corbusier is itself a landscape through its sculptural articulation.” Inspired by these ideas, the Busan Cinema Centre showcases its own interpretation of a column-free ‘flying’ roof. During the annual Busan film festival, there is a heightened visual experience with computer programmed LED lining the outdoor ceiling surfaces. Artistic lighting created by visual artists and displayed across the ceiling in full motion graphics, double up as a communication platform. The imposing roof aside, the urban plaza is a maze of overlapping zones - the Double Cone, the Cinema Mountain, the Urban Valley, the Red Carpet Zone, and the BIFF Hill.

The Double Cone marks the grand entrance to the centre, connecting the Cinema Mountain with the BIFF Hill. On the ground level is a public cafĂŠ with outdoor seating, while the upper level links to a restaurant, bar and lounge overlooking the river beyond. During the film festival, it works as the Red Carpet Zone or as a prestaging pace for VIPs to then transfer to the outdoor cinema stage.

The Cinema Mountain is where the core of the action lies - it has a 1000 seat multifunctional theatre and a threescreen multiplex. One of these is a 400 seater while the other two accommodate 200 seats. The theatre design is breathtaking with world-class features - optimal sight lines and adjustable acoustics across its two levels and a flexible proscenium type stage with side stages and fly-tower that can be tailored to different events (theatre, musical or any other). While the Cinema Mountain takes care of the indoor experience, the Urban Valley with its flat ground surface and large stepped tribunes has the stage set for a 4000 seat outdoor cinema viewing experience. Both the indoor and outdoor performances share the backstage facilities that support the accommodation of projection screens, stages, loudspeakers and lighting arrays. The BIFF Hill encompasses a multitude of functions related to the film festival - a convention hall, BIFF-centre, offices and a visual media centre are all housed in this building. But the main focus is the tribune seating space of the outdoor cinema and the concourse. Although its nomenclature indicates its specificity to the film festival, the BIFF Hill can be easily customised for day-to-day usage because of its flexible layout. For example, although the Red Carpet Zone is created specifically during the festival, it operates as the symbolic entryway into the Busan Cinema Centre complex in non-event periods. Finally, there is the Memorial Court which facilitates a grand entry to the Cinema Mountain. The column-free sheltered roof above envelops a trendy public plaza - a perfect placefor crowds to gather around in either a formal or informal setting.

CONTEMPORARILY INDIAN D&C Developers’ corporate office in Ahmedabad has been designed by ‘u design studio’; with this project the design and architectural firm has gone ahead and redefined the meaning of Indian contemporary by adding just the right pinch of traditional sensibility to a dish mainly imbued with modern flavour. “Whether a retail property or an office space, the designer’s responsibility is to enhance its brand value by providing the best possible design solutions,” says Umang, principal designer of the studio. He firmly believes that the work environment in an office needs to be properly established and be devoid of any distraction points. Located opposite the Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute in Ahmedabad, this 5000 sq ft office sits on the fifth floor of Kairos, a commercial building designed by Umang’s brother Pratik. The clients envisaged a timeless design amalgamating modern aesthetics with native Indian elements. Umang drew inspiration from the rural setting of Indian villages and decided for the material palette to consist predominantly of natural materials. The core essence of the concept was to create a soothing work experience amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

The entry to the office has been designed based on the concept of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;atithi devo bhavaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; a traditional Indian sentiment that puts a guest on the same pedestal as God. A gokhla at the reception and teak jaali work on the main door form the focus of the foyer space. The jaali work continues in the form of partitions throughout the office, creating a unifying thread of indigenous elements. A custom-cut sandstone logo of the company coupled with polished kota stone flooring ensures a natural, rustic feel while the detailing maintains the contemporary edge.

Natural light seeps into the interiors through fine grooves and cut-outs made in the exposed RCC slab. As the sun moves overhead from morning to evening, the changing patterns of light and shadow create a dramatic, yet serene, experience within the waiting area. Enclosed with clear glass panels for security reasons, this space is physically cordoned off from the main office area, yet maintains visual connectivity with it. Adjacent to the waiting area, the open terrace forms the heart of the office. Further, it acts as a transition space between the waiting area and the conference room. Originally, this terrace had been left unattended. Seeing endless design potential in the open-to-sky space, Umangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team incorporated it within the overall scheme. In keeping with the traditional theme, an idol of a deity has been placed at the entrance. This is believed to be auspicious. A roof made of polished wooden rafters and a thick band of polished kota passing through the base of the columns maintains the mood board of local materials. The teak wood columns are detailed with long, fine grooves adding to the ethnic aesthetic. Customised light fittings highlight these grooves. A wooden swing completes the space and the terrace offers panoramic views of the sprawling city of Ahmedabad.

In the conference room, two adjacent sides have been kept open, while the other two are made up of exposed brick walls. This stark contrast of opacity and transparency ensures that this space looks out towards the terrace. The roof of polished wooden rafters continues within this space too and enables a seamless binding between the exteriors and interiors. A custom-made teak wood suspended light fixture illuminates the room with diffused white light just as required.

The design and joinery details of seating elements have been inspired by the traditional khatla which is used in villages. On entering the staff area, there is a warm sense of welcome. Wide passages allow the spaces to blend and flow with ease. “We have tried to break the monotony of typical workspaces by incorporating lots of wood in the design. A sense of freshness surrounds you as you walk into the work zone,” says Umang. An assortment of art pieces further contribute towards making the space livelier.

Decorated in an eclectic mix of different materials, they portray a psychedelic twist with bright and bold bursts of colour.

They undergo a complete transformation with carefully chosen bold patterns and colours that make their presence felt in daring decisions. The carpets that cover the rooms are one such example. Murals and graffiti art sketches on walls and within frames add to the retro charm. The lounge area has trendy furniture, magazines and works of art and one could buy many of the design items around the hotel from the reception. The hotelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restaurant, Neni can charm food lovers in just one bite! The space is bathed in red lighting which probably works towards increasing your appetite! Brainchild of designer Alfredo Haberli, the interiors add a bit of humour to the space. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one place whose quirkiness you just have to indulge in!

ICONIC BUILDING LET THERE BE LIGHT Towards the end of the 1980s, Zurich University decided to compact its vastly spread out premises. Architect Santiago Calatrava took up this sensitive integration. Keeping in mind the restraint of space, the old buildings inner courtyard was transformed to house the Library of the Faculty of Law. Typically Calatrava, it was anything but straight or rectangular. It was an asymmetric eclipse filled with air.

The 500 reading spaces on the sides of the gallery have perfect work conditions. The bright timber clad interiors contribute to the airy and spatial impression. Moving oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gaze across the floors, one can witness the space unfold in all its glory.

Calatrava implemented a steel structure across six storeys. The curved space becomes narrower on the sides and the glass dome allows light to reach right down.

RESTAURANT EXALTING A SWISS HOMAGE Recognised for his conceptual practice in art, photography and sculpture, artist Rolf Sachs translated his approach of art into interiors as he unveiled the Saltz restaurant. Wrapped in an eclectic palette of red and blue, it is a playful yet contemporary homage to Switzerland. While the room in red references the Swiss flag, the wall interrupted by an undulating neon light alludes towards the Alps. Sculptural elements emerge in the form of a hanging rock swing and a feature salt wall that add texture and break up the otherwise refined surfaces. Neon lights, rock, salt and felt are used in an unexpected way to form artworks and custom made furniture that constantly reference the Swiss landscape divulging a theatrical yet intimate setting.

PUBLIC SPACE A CELEBRATION OF STEEL The Pavillon Le Corbusier is the last building designed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier. It stands today as a Swiss art museum dedicated to the works of its architect. The building celebrates the use of steel. Composed of two major volumetric elements - a roof structure composed of two square welded steel sheets and a two storey rectilinear volume beneath it that sits on a concrete pavilion floor, the building uses modular steel frame cubes to makeup the structural framework. Walls, windows and doors are bolted into these frames. The nature of these prefabricated cubes allows for an open ground plan that can be divided at will. Enamel panels in primary colours and glass, envelope the building in a language of the rest of the building. Iconic for its floating steel roof and enamel panels the building is a perfect ode to its builder.

The design facilitates solar gain in the winter, while natural ventilation, shading and thermal mass cool the building in the summer.

The Hauora is a philosophy of health and well-being unique to New Zealand and propagated by its MÄ ori community; an indigenous people that arrived from eastern Polynesia in several waves of canoe voyages between 1250 and 1300 CE. There are four dimensions to Hauora, each associated with a different aspect of well-being physical, mental/emotional, social and spiritual. Graphically, the Whare Tapa Wha model describes Hauora as four walls of a whare (a MÄ ori hut or communal house), each wall representing a different dimension. It is believed that all four dimensions are crucial to building strength and stability.

The vast expanses of glass in the facade ensure 80% visual connectivity to the outside capitalising on natural lighting and encouraging a seamless circulation between the interior and exterior.

The building with all its primary and ancillary functions, namely the kitchen, laundry, reception, toilet and other staff facilities, is fully accessible to handicapped people.

The Hobsonville Point Early Learning Centre was to be built, established and operated by the North Auckland Kindergarten Association (NAKA). In keeping with the organisation’s core belief, the architects have modelled their concept after Hauora. For the design of the primary school, three whares housing the main functions of the building have been rotated and overlaid to form a village with a ‘piazza’ at its heart. A symbolic representation of the philosophy, this central pivotal space forms the social heart of the building into which all the classrooms and the kitchen flow.

Of course, the house typology has been “simplified down to its bare bones to make it more architectural,” says Phil Smith, one of the founding partners at CASA. The roof and walls are wrapped in dark corrugated steel, a commonly used residential roof and wall cladding. Smith adds, “The simple central ridged pitched roof is distilled from typical residential forms and turned into an extruded shape to make it more dynamic, capturing and extending its space into the landscape to maximise the indoor/outdoor flow.”

The architecture of the school informs the scheme for the interior design. One could almost call it a pure building, in that what one sees on the outside is what one gets on the inside. The shape, scale and proportion of the building’s form define and decorate the interior spaces, leaving no need for ceilings that are ‘false’ or adornments of any kind. The scheme for the interior design, in a sense, is to have no separate scheme at all. Internal glazed doors have the same frame colour as the external cladding and window framing, maintaining a harmony between all the elements. The internal walls and ceiling are painted a shade of white, making the interior space as bright as possible and allowing it to pick up the colour of the weather.

A symbolic representation of Hauora, this central pivotal space forms the social heart of the building into which all the classrooms and the kitchen flow.

Built over a period of 9 months and occupying a gross area of 450 sq m, the learning centre boasts of an impressive list of environmental credentials. From plasterboard, paint finishes and sheet timber products to carpets, vinyl floor finishes and adhesives/sealants, all materials have been selected based on their ecofriendly certification and low VOC values. With a major portion of the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lighting requirement being satisfied by natural means, less than 100 sq m of space requires to be artificially lit. Pendants with LED bulbs which are 80% more energy efficient than their incandescent counterparts do the trick. Hobsonville is a newly developed part of Auckland with many new houses, urban squares, suburban streets, etc. Because each classroom is its own whare, it becomes easy for the child to identify and relate his experience at the childcare to the wider Hobsonville Village. Talking about their products Bandana Jain says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are passionate about the planet we live upon and hence all our creations contribute towards restoring its beauty.â&#x20AC;? The products we make are made from imported corrugated cardboard, burlap and other recycled materials.

“We have an eye for visualising trash in a serendipitous way and turning what is rubbish for others into functional and eclectic products. We design hand crafted home decor products by using very high quality, handpicked recycled corrugated cardboard which is literally as strong as wood,” says the team from Sylvn Studio.

The name Sylvn has been derived from Sylvanus, the God of the forest as per Roman mythology. He was in charge of protecting the jungle and the living beings staying in and around it. The literal meaning of Sylvanus is the one who loves the forest. Sylvn Studio has three mottos: Conserve the environment. Generate employment. Contribute to the society. “When you buy from us, you don’t just take home a product. You take home a work of art and in your own little way, contribute to beautifying the earth,” says Jain.

Here are a few of their products. The Tripod Beacon has a gorgeous design and is composed of a real teak wood tripod and corrugated cardboard. Basilisk on the other hand is inspired by the legendary snake. The Superpower table lamp is constructed out of up-cycled corrugated cardboard and designed to resemble the symbol of the US dollar. It is further enhanced with a cute ‘smiley’ illustration.

The Empower table lamp is beautifully decorated with crushed stone which is well balanced with an exposed bulb. The Stony Barrel Tripod is a stylishly designed with aqua stone. Corrugated cardboard and stone is an unusual combination, which gives it a very classy look. Sylvn Studio’s hanging lamps come with single or multiple luminaires. Being made out of corrugated cardboard their exteriors are lattice like and allow light to pass through.

Once in a while there comes a designer who creates things so unexpected that it makes you sit back and look twice. The Sovrappensiero Design Studio illustrates this perfectly. A colloboration between designers Lorenzo De Rosa and Ernesto Ladevaia, this Milan-based studio has consistently created unusual designs since their formation in 2007.

Agata

Take a look at the designs for lighting, for example. At first glance, what strikes you about the Agata lamp (2016) is its shape. The lamp looks like a scultpure, a modern minimalist decoration. A metal circle or ellipse holds a wooden cuff which then transitions into the mirrored shade. Meant to be a ceiling lamp, the Agata can be used as one or multiples. The hanging metal wires are adjustable for height and rotation. The Pileo (2014) floor and table lamps are inspired by nature, particularly by the shape of mushrooms. The word ‘pileo’ means a skull cap or hat close to the head. It also refers to the top expanded portion of fungi, which makes it a perfect name in many ways for this lamp. “We wanted to make a lamp that talks about the fine and delicate sides of the wood,” says the design team. The solid canaletta walnut or ash lamp has a tin-plated shade and clean lines.

Pileo

The Sunset (2015) table lamp was designed to be like its name-sake : “a warm and gentle sun that briefly illumunates the space before setting.” The LED lighting is enclosed in a shell painted with an embossed finish, one that is reminiscent of traditional lamp shades. When not in use, the Sunset could well be an accent for your table. The Saving lamp (2010) is full of emotional context. It reflects a much-loved object which has fulfilled its purpose, yet is precious enough to not only be retained, but displayed proudly under a glass globe.

Atto di Fede Sovrappensiero’s designs for furniture are somewhat unusual as well. The Atto di Fede (2013) chair brims with metaphors and biblical references. According to the studio, this quirky chair speaks of faith and betrayal. One leg of the chair comes apart in the shape of a cross, throwing the rest of the chair out of alignment. This apparently, is inspired by St. Matthew, one of the Apostles of Christ. “It seems that Christ has only said “follow me” to convert him from mere money, to the holy spirit. And the “follow me”, in the chair, becomes the thread that holds together the support, as “following” in case of God does not mean to go behind someone, take his place, or remain attached, but stay remain faithful to the straight helm of something. Holding to a principle without which everything falters. It just happens that last supper was the first announced crunch: there, where principles are missing, even the princes decay, and the gods die. Where the straight line of any value coincides with the line of gravity. If you betray it, everything collapses. And in these days, it is not a small thing to remember this.”

Office Retrofit

Metaphors and hidden ideas have been part of the design since the beginning. The ‘Casseto del sogni’ (2010) bedside table is an elegant table with a secret. It had a hidden drawer with a blackboard bottom, one you can use to “write your secret wish”.

The Office Retrofit (2011) range of office products reused the old stock of the Manerba furniture company. The series includes storage, furniture and decorative accents like plant holders. The studio says, “The project idea is the balance between two different objectives: the first is to create a strong contrast with the traditional image of impersonal, institutional and rigorous offices, and the other is to make the production easy and cheap.”

Sovrappensiero’s product design range extends to hardware and kitchenware as well. The Cook range for Mamoli (2014) is a series of flexible taps for the kitchen. The classic faucet was redesigned for a 360° movement, thus making it capable of handling multiple interactions at one time. The taps are available in a range of colours as well. Say goodbye to the standard stainless-steel finish and say hello to sunflower ray, red chilli and blue blueberry.

Furnature (2016) is a experimental series of “incomplete objects” like hangers, side tables, an hourglass and a towel rack. The industrial peices are incomplete unless an element of nature is added to it. So the side-table needs a rock to anchor it, the towel-rack is meaningless without a branch that acts as towel holder and the hourglass is defined by the minerals used in it. Similarly, the Roll-Artico-Clip designs for Incipit (2014) changes the perception of the classical daily object. Roll is a modern version of the perpetual calendar. Made from beech wood and with three graphics printed on tyvek, Roll is ironic and cheeky. Artico is a pair of ceramic containers too pretty to be used. Inspired by a body of water, with a little boat and iceberg floating on the metallic mirror lid. Clip is a clock with a clamp which means you can hang it wherever you like including on shelves, doors and handles. No reason to ever forget the time now. The Design Studio’s work extends to innovative projects such as ‘Design for blind people’ which included a carpet which mimicked the sound of walking on dry leaves, adding a new dimension to the simple act of walking. Sovrappensiero has won several awards and they’ve had several collaborations with leading international brands. Given their portfiolio so far, one can gladly look forward to more emotion-filled and poetic products which give the space a little more depth and meaning.

Dubai Design Week showcases stand-out design from Menasa Region The 6-day long event thrives to promote UAE-based design talent while celebrating the city’s innovative and forward-thinking approach. One of the newest and most ambitious international design events, Dubai Design Week was held at Dubai Design District (d3) and various other iconic locations around the city from October 24 to October 29, 2016. The event showcases UAE’s thriving design scene at an international platform to enthral design lovers, creators and influencers.

Showcasing emerging and established creative talent from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region, this year’s theme invited designers to produce work inspired by ‘The Human Senses’. In Dubai’s collaborative spirit and as a reflection of the city’s global outlook, its design week is both regional and international in scope, encompassing public and private spheres, culture, education and entertainment spanning multiple disciplines ranging from graphic and product design to architecture and industrial design. Panels, keynote speeches, panel discussions, public performances and educational workshops all contribute to the greater discussion of what design means for the region and the world.

Mumbai-based NOTE-D believes in the staying power of combined sensibilities, where local traditions and international design understanding can come together to create functionally solid and visually appealing spaces. NOTE-D was founded in 2009 by Hemant Purohit and Smita Khanna. NOTE (Nature Of The Experiment-Design) has since then tried to stay true to its name by actively blending international/contemporary style templates with traditional Indian aesthetics. It is an approach that has led to the creation of brilliantly detailed, though overall seemingly simple-looking projects that seamlessly mix the familiar local with the distinctly global. The team dabbles in projects relating to â&#x20AC;&#x153;education, hospitality, housing, retail stores, and eventsâ&#x20AC;? and everywhere its predilection towards realising inter-connected, sunlight-flushed, and functionally-solid but elegantly demarcated spaces is signature-stampingly evident. NOTE-D conjured up the best of Mediterranean inspiration for this project to create sprawling 5,500 sq ft leisure homes redolent with calming breeze and warm natural light. These sublime weekend homes can make weekdays particularly painful to get through with! The homes feature stark, solid white monolithic walls that join together to form a courtyard within, realising a brilliant amalgamation of the old Indian home and the European standard residence.

The walls themselves remain almost forebodingly plain, except where they are punctuated by generously tall doors and tilted rectangular windows, or when hugged by carefully-pruned vines and plants. This juxtaposition of polished wood with white, both ablaze with natural light, is a simple stroke of aesthetic genius which helps highlight the homes’ interconnected fluidity.

The rooms - living spaces, kitchen, 6 bedrooms, gardens, outdoor lounge, terraces and swimming pool - stand along a spiral, establishing a range from being cosily private to being so open that the boundaries seem to vanish. “Programmable outdoor spaces, such as the loggia on the mezzanine are interjected at regular intervals as you move from public to private around the courtyard, maintaining a visual connection across levels,” states the team. It is difficult to pick one aspect of the project that makes it so remarkable, but if it was to be picked, then it would be its multi-leveled, rise-and-dip demeanour that seems equally flushed with the goodness of the Alibaug air, sunshine, and greenery.

This project is an effort at apartment re-imagination, but really is a master stroke at space division. What used to be a 3-bedroom swathe has been turned into a creativity-friendly suite of contiguous spaces distinguished by wood-and-glass partition (at the foyer), thick black curtains, carefully placed furniture pieces, custom-designed tiling, statement-making lighting fixtures, and floor accenting. This amalgamated space aims to relax the resident couple, so it is obviously full of warm tones (of Brazilian slate and sturdy wood) sunlight, spots of colour and unconventional shapes. Artefacts and gizmos pepper the space, along with some unusual props and décor items.

“Customised Rorschach pattern bathroom tiles, act as stimulating wall art in the master bathroom. A vintage surgical light is paired with a custom designed dining table to occupy the awkward shape of dining space,” states the team. This array is also populated by a series of bar stools that run along the windows in the living room zone, which is in effect an extension of the bedroom zone. This is a 2,000 sq. ft. worth of interior space contouring like no other!

This NOTE-D installation project stretched and fortified the inherent textural possibilities of chosen Indian textile and construction material. The firm was invited to explore the role of textile in contemporary design, and the team set about the task “using fabric as sacrificial shuttering in casting techniques”. POP, cement slurry, mortar and paint were applied to the rough-hewn fabric, in a fashion reminiscent of the tie-and-dye method with balls and inflated balloons providing the shape and structure. The result was that the fabric took on membranelike qualities as it acted in response to the wetness, density, and coagulating quality of the liquid content of the additions. This became a study in patterns and reactions, with the textile fabric surprisingly upending the material additions through the incredible whole of its stiff wrinkles. “The resulted membrane had compressive strength due to the coffer like geometry. The idyllic environs of Goa are just perfect for this simple and elegant store that exudes a distinct philosophy regarding its styling, products and designers. “The beautiful building we are located in is a 100-year-old Portuguese house with high ceilings and lovely shell windows which creates a perfect backdrop and setting for the beautiful range of products,”explains Bhagyashree Patwardhan, Founder and Creative Director.

The relaxed Goan vibe coupled with a quintessential Portuguese design influence makes browsing around the 1800 square feet area a pleasant experience indeed. The charming cottage starts working its magic even before you enter the store, and once you’re in, the beautiful décor takes over, with natural light flowing in freely. Yellow Jaisalmer flooring covers the entire store. High ceilings add to the grandeur of the space. The shell of the store, that is, the walls, are all white. Quaint wooden display units like shelves, racks, drawers and open cabinets house many of the products.

Another advantage of the predominantly white backdrop is that it provides an apt canvas for the varied products to shine through.

These have also been painted white as it is a colour that’s easy to play with. “All colours, tones, textures and shades blend in beautifully with it. In fact, one might easily feel that someone actually lived there! It’s partly true, since it used to be a home, and that warmth continues to envelop the space. The fact that it is divided into rooms that flow freely into one another adds to the relaxed feel of the space. The uniformity of the décor in terms of flooring, displays and colour scheme helps bind all the different areas together.

Quaint wooden display units like shelves, racks, drawers and open cabinets house many of the products. These have also been painted white as it is a colour that’s easy to play around with.

Paper Boat Collective is a concept lifestyle boutique that is a culmination of a 15-year design and decor journey that started at the National Institute of Design, where Patwardhan pursued her design studies. The store showcases products that are handcrafted using natural materials. These are made in small quantities, using traditional skill sets and techniques from India. They have a simple, yet stylish presence and one cannot fail to notice the keen eye for detail, the finesse of the materials, the high quality and the perfect styling that resonates perfectly with contemporary lifestyles - be it clothing, furniture, home accessories or accessories for kids’ rooms.

The strength of the store also lies in the mindful curation of products created by a range of people with varied design backgrounds. While the basic structure remains the same, displays are changed as and when new products and designers come in, which generally happens once every three weeks. There is a complete changeover of the display once every year. “The whole store is designed as an experience which allows people to wander around the shop peacefully without pressure,” says Patwardhan.
