In the publishing world we are often looking ahead, thinking of spring flowers and sunny days when the snow is on the ground and the skies are dark and grey, and envisioning crisp burnished leaves, comfort food and the latest cozy throws while the summer sun is blazing and the beaches are full. Renovation projects are similar in that the ideal time to plan and look for inspiration is often months ahead of when you ultimately want to be enjoying your new space—in fact, it should be. GRANGEGORMAN RESIDENCE BREAKOUT HOUSE IN HISTORIC DUBLIN
When the owner of a terrace house on an established Dublin street decided to build a contemporary home on the lot next door, he didn’t have much space to work with—the lot was confined and narrow. He also didn’t have an immense amount of money—about 180,000 Euros was his limit. Despite those constraints he got a house that turns heads and had people knocking on his door for weeks after he moved in; some protested against the break in tradition but most commented on the home’s simple beauty. Darrell O’Donoghue, a partner in ODOS architects in Dublin, said the house almost built itself; that the parameters were well defined. What makes it unique, he said, is the context. “It’s a period part of the city. It’s right beside a terrace of period structures and the opposite side of the road is the same. You put that building in a different context and it might not stand out as much.”

That assertion is arguable. The street elevation can resemble a straight cube with anodized aluminum siding but with the quick turn of an indoor hand crank, a panel slips back, and perhaps another one, to reveal enormous windows that glow with light in the evenings. Opening or shutting panels changes the façade of the house; it’s as though it is a moveable piece of modern art. The client, a motorcycle enthusiast, wasn’t even interested in a new home when he began looking at the property beside the house where he lived. He wanted a garage for his bikes. O’Donoghue suggested that a simple garage was not the best use of the space—why not put living quarters above it? And so it was decided. The client’s demands were simple—keep it contemporary. “It was a fairly free hand that we were given,” O’Donoghue said. “It was refreshing. Normally clients have very strong opinions about what they want.”

The Property Brothers’ childhood home was on a modest ranch in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Classic Charles Russell paintings hung on the walls. Brown shag carpet flowed on the floor. And thick wood furnishings propped up an eclectic mix of western memorabilia. “When my Dad first came over from Scotland he worked as a cowboy on a lot of heritage ranches in and around Alberta and British Columbia, so the house had a lot of cool things that he picked up over the years,” says 35-year-old Jonathan Scott. On one very lucky work stint in Banff, their Dad met and charmed an intrepid woman from Ontario—she was the trail cook at the time. “They got married, they had us, and 53 years later my parents have now retired and moved back to Banff where they first met,” says Jonathan.

“The client wanted the outside to be very low key—he didn’t want people to realize everything that was going on inside and out back,” explains Todd Best, president and owner of Best Builders. “The house looks like every other house built in Tsawwassen in the late ‘60s or early ‘70s, but only from the front.” The idea was to create a place where the homeowner and his three young children could be together whenever they wanted—or apart, as needed. This is immediately apparent when you walk through the front door and see that the pony wall from the entrance serves as the back for a breakfast nook banquette. There’s also a wall offering storage in both drawers and open shelving; a desk to the right of the refrigerator provides a handy homework spot under the watchful eye of the adult preparing dinner. Huge exposed honey-coloured beams form a visual framework for the kitchen while a lime backsplash

provides a pop of colour on one wall. White-lined cabinets are interspersed with the refrigerator, concealed behind more millwork, and all the cabinet doors are faced with grain-matched wood in wide variegated stripes of milk and dark chocolate. Three pendant lights in concentric, zigzagged circles direct the eye toward the glossy white surface of the kitchen island, which contrasts beautifully with an oversize plank of knotty wood that serves as a dining counter. Its rippled edge and semi-unfinished surface bring a tactile organic element to the sleek modernity of the kitchen. Low back chairs, along with the rest of the furniture, were custom-made for the house. “[The client] liked the vibe of the late ‘60s and wanted to keep that retro funky factor,” says Sarah Gallop, principal of Sarah Gallop Design Inc. “The idea is to pay attention to an era, not to replicate it exactly.”

In the Ukiyo-e Spectacular exhibit at the West Vancouver Museum, collector Shinichi Inagaki hopes to stimulate enthusiasm and interest in Japanese art by sharing more than one hundred of his woodblock prints which have been flown in from Tokyo. Influencing Western modernist and impressionist artists such as Monet and Van Gogh, the poetic inspiration of Ukiyo-e prints appealed to the masses at a time of urbanization and economic growth in Japan when the merchant class was finally wealthy enough to decorate their homes.
