Founder’s Note The Curriculum Fair has been a stalwart of the homeschool community since its Pandan Valley days, where parents would bring their curricula for fellow homeschoolers to browse. Today the curriculum fair attracts not just homeschooling parents but anyone interested to know about homeschooling. Homeschooling in Singapore has come a long way. Today it is more visible, in part due to the COVID-19 situation. While affecting schools, the pandemic may have also benefitted parents another perspective : that teaching their own might be a new norm. There is help for those who just starting out. This year’s Curriculum Team has quickly put together an online showcase of families’ learning journeys and vendors who offer interesting services. We hope that the profiling of various families and vendors would help businesses hit by the crisis. May the Curriculum Fair inspire you.

Team’s Note
Thanks for joining us in the 4th edition of the Homeschool Curriculum Fair held in conjunction with the Homeschool Convention. Homeschool curriculum fairs held in Singapore went back as far as 10 years ago. I remember in 2015, I attended my first curriculum fair in Pandan Valley. Back then, I was still new to homeschooling and had no friends in the homeschooling community. Like any new homeschooler, it was very important for me in the first few years back then to really figure out what curriculum I was going to use. But now, as I find my way into the homeschool community, I often sit under the feet of veteran mums and in the company of reassuring friends who make me realise that what I'm looking for in my journey of teaching is now different. This somewhat also reflects the direction of this year's Curriculum Fair, as we not only look at the curricula for its syllabus' worth but how it would fit into one family's life, for homeschooling life is truly dynamic as we work through school and life together. We hope that you can see that picking the curricula, is only but a small aspect of homeschooling life - it is what you do in conjunction with the other parts of life, that really makes up your child's education. This would not be possible without my dedicated team, who are also my co-op community that keeps me sane and in check - Angela, Diane, Maira and Shaaheraa. Also, big thanks to Shan, who is steering the General Enquiries section of this year's fair and has been my partner in organising the fair for the last 3 years. As this is my third year hosting the Curriculum Fair, I'll be looking forward to contributing to my beloved Homeschool Community in other ways and will be stepping down from next year onwards. I hope that you will enjoy a very different online fair experience, in the midst of the Covid season, and embrace changes as how homeschoolers always do. Stay well and stay curious,

The 2020 Homeschool Convention, returning for its fourth edition, is a whole new event in itself. With recent developments in the global situation, Homeschool Singapore will be hosting its first e-convention broadening the horizons for the future of the homeschooling community. This year’s change is phenomenal. As March 2020 drew nearer, the situation on the ground became more and more unstable, and a decision was made to convert the convention from a traditional face-to-face format, to one that is completely online. It also means that we have the opportunity to share with a wider group of people!

How did you start homeschooling?
I started homeschooling by hosting my co-op. I created my homeschool facebook group and I also joined a few other homeschool facebook groups. I put up a request for people to join me and people did! 2 years on, we’re still running the co-op, some of whom have been with me pretty much right from the start.
Wh@ keeps you going?
Parenting is already tough enough, don’t even talk about homeschooling. But I cope in the following ways: 1) Knowing that the child will do best when he can. And if he’s having a meltdown, he’s not throwing you a tantrum, he’s telling you he needs help. You’ll need to be the adult here and not throw tantrum back at him 2) Know your coping mechanism: It can get too much too quickly. Knowing what you need (sleep, alone time etc) and knowing when you need to walk away to cool down (or hide) 3) Not afraid to ask and seek what you need. Accept help when offered.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? Don’t be afraid to set up co-ops, reach out for play dates or teach other kids. Everyone starts somewhere. The more “teaching practice” you put in, the faster you become better at it. 6

on a Budg& Surabhi Gupta is a mummy to two precious girls ages 6 and 5. She is an Engineering Graduate and Finance Postgraduate from IIM Calcutta, a homemaker, homeschooler and blogger by passion. She worked in corporate for over 8 years, she embarked on the journey of full time motherhood and never looked back. She loves discovering new ways to make their learning creative, fun and hands-on while also on a Budget.
How did you start homeschooling?
Homeschooling is still a “FOREIGN” concept for Indians. Initially, this mumma was not trying to “homeschool”, but just wanted to keep the kids at HOME. I wanted to keep the two girls together so that they can have a strong bond where they learn to LIVE with each other rather than just cope with having a sibling. We decided to delay their school admission by a few years. In the meantime, the super guilty Indian mom started making DIY Montessori activities (inspired from the internet) to get them “Ready for School”. And that is where our “HOMESCHOOL” journey started. Honestly,we are just LIVING TOGETHER. We are together all the time and we love it.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? Parents have told me that they are completely ready to homeschool their child but are scared of failing. I can only tell you that: 1. You won't know till you try. 2. If you think that it is BEST for your family, do it. 3. You need to take a LEAP of FAITH when everything feels scary. 4. Homeschooling is not for the faint-hearted. You can never be fully PREPARED for it.
What keeps you going?
1. The peace and freedom we experience as a family. Homeschooling is not only about the kids, the whole family lives it. No external factors can interfere in our parenting. We make our own rules, routines and systems and we are free to change them if they do not work for us. We are the primary influencers in the lives of our kids and that brings a lot of peace to our home, where teaching values, traditions and beliefs are concerned. 2. The bonding between the two sisters. I do not know how their bond would have been if my elder one went to school. How it has turned out to be, I am just grateful for it and I am not ready to risk changing that. 3. Faith. There were many times where I just wanted to give up, but then the Lord told me that I needed to do it for my family. Honestly, it is a Leap of Faith that brought us here.

How did you start homeschooling?
I started homeschooling while I was in another country deciding whether to pay international school fees. She was only 5, and the things I “needed” to teach her did not seem that daunting and were actually interesting, so we started homeschooling. Over the years, I have developed a vision to want to homeschool because of the benefits of individualised learning and more opportunity for character building.
Wh@ keeps you going?
Building a strong relationship with my child, discovering and facing the challenges of growing up together.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? Start homeschooling acknowledging that you are a learner in this journey. Most importantly, that we are learning about our child: how they learn, what they are like, which helps us learn how best to guide them and inspire them. 8
Fun-fi*ed Convers@ions “I miss homeschooling my son, we had so much fun, partly because I took the easy way out and taught him the things that I enjoyed. I virtually turned him into my activity buddy. My wellbeing matters to me, and I figured that since I was going to face my kid all day on most days, I might as well make it fun for both of us. In that way, both of us can remain happy and motivated!” Wendy Koh homeschooled her son for 15 years. He is now enrolled in a polytechnic. She believes that the key to a pleasant homeschool journey lies in the conversations that parents initiate with their children. Her many hobbies include watching funny animal videos on youtube, making noise on her piano and guitars, and talking about Hunger Games.
Wh@ keeps you going?

Many reasons, some of which cannot be spoken of in public, but mainly because I think very highly of myself.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? You can never be sure which is the right path to take. It makes sense to simply follow your instinct and allow the path to reveal itself onestep at a time. If homeschooling doesn’t work out for you, you can always enrol your child in a school. It isn’t a dead end.

As educators ourselves looking at different spectrums of students from different levels, we see the need to build resiliency in our kids. This starts with moulding an identity which is not purely defined by grades and how good a student the kid is. Homeschooling provides an environment to nurture diversity and strength of character. E.g. we expose Eison to sports programmes, forest school walks every week and hands-on experience in running a business which are experiences not easily replicated in schools.
Wh@ keeps you going?
Staying close as a family and giving affirmation to one another (not just between husband and wife, but parent and child as well) is the petrol that keeps our engines running and the concrete that binds the collection of bricks in our family unit.

Wh@ advice do you have for fir-timers?
Self-doubt is natural and if harnessed properly, can motivate you to try out different approaches and pick the best one for yourself. Surround yourself with like-minded friends and be open (not defensive) to people with alternative views, including members of the extended family. The more open-minded and assured you are of this journey you are undertaking, the more confidence you garner from yourself and the people around you.
Mo$e%ori & O+door ChildLed Educ@ion Shirin Tan is a mother of 4 boys of ages 14, 12, 7 & 2. She is currently homeschooling her second boy, Trevor, who will be sitting for PSLE this year.
How did you start homeschooling?
I was a Montessori preschool teacher, I love teaching and constantly searching for the meaning of true education. I contemplated homeschooling my eldest when he turned 7 but never had the confidence to do it. And so both my eldest and second children were enrolled in school. They had a fair share of challenges in school and my eldest survived as he was a high achiever, read a lot and was good in academics. However, my second child did not really enjoy school and was described as disengaged, dreamy, forgetful and unsociable. I then took a chance and pulled him out of school last year. So far he is happier, doing much better and is enjoying the freedom to discover himself and explore his interests. As a family, we are foodies. We love eating, cooking, travelling and exploring new places. We love nature and hope to make a little difference in the world through little acts of service and kindness. I believe learning begins at home but it can happen anywhere and anytime.
Wh@ keeps you going?
The children’s laughter, having fun and those happy times with my kids.

Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? Look at the gems in your child, their virtues and the potential to be anything they wanted to be. They are to be regarded as “a mine rich in gems of inestimable value”. When you start seeing this potential in them, let go and b e l i e v e they love learning and want to learn and be good. They will shine and soon they will shine brighter than us and bring about a better world.

Only Child's Play Through play, Zahila believes that learning can include children of varied ages. When it involves hands-on activities and stories, it can nurture creativity and encourage the use of their imagination. Subjects are not seen as individual entities and most importantly, learning can take place anywhere.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? How did you start homeschooling?
When I quit my job, my eldest was four years old. It was a natural reaction then to take him out of school as I wanted to spend more time with him. Days turned into months and months turned into years and we met with a juncture when he turned five - to apply for exemption for CE or send him to school. It was not a decision that my husband and I made overnight. We discussed it periodically and even then, we could not make a decision because homeschooling is not all fun and play every day. There are a lot of factors to weigh in such as your lifestyle, health, emotions and spiritual aspects, all of which need to be considered because you are not just teaching academics to your children but the state of your relationship with your children that you envisioned must take precedence before anything else.
Wh@ keeps you going?
I can customise my children’s learning needs and shape their environment to the best of my abilities.

HELP - We are made to be interdependent of one another. While we are special in our own ways, all of us need help and help is always send to us or made available. We must learn to acknowledge that and reach out for help if we need to. Be it your spouse, external help, an experienced homeschooler or just a listening ear. HEALTH - I cannot say this enough. Our health is a gift and help on its own and we must take care of it because if we want to give our best, our health has to take precedence. HAPPY - Our emotions are pivotal to our day to day activities. It will also depend whether we react or respond to situations. Not all days are good and being in control with our emotions will also aid with our health which will offer 'help' in our day to day activities.
Making Time and Space for Gameschooling There were two passions that Wan Ling and her husband had in common: travel and boardgames. When their beautiful daughters came into their life, they were determined from the start to make them their fellow gamers and travel companions. It’s a goal they have largely succeeded in attaining. Their daughters are now 3 and 7.
How did you start homeschooling?
Freedom and time are the most treasured assets of our homeschooling lifestyle. We guard these two fiercely. We want our children to have the time and space to explore and discover their interests. Therefore, we adopt an eclectic approach to homeschooling, not adhering to any particular philosophy or pedagogy. Gameschooling also plays a huge role in our learning.
Wh@ keeps you going?
I enjoy learning together with my children (most of the time). We are encouraged when we recognise real growth in our children. I am also assured when my God shows me that He is with us through His providence.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? Surround yourself with well-wishers, find your tribe of homeschoolers, have no qualms about chucking out a curriculum if it does not work for you.

Learn Mandarin The
Fu% Free Way
I was an MOE-trained teacher who is currently running a perfume manufacturing and online retail business. We also help in the operations of running an NGO in India. I would like to share simple ways to incorporate learning Mandarin in our daily lives without much or any preparation.
How did you start homeschooling?
We were living in India and Johor for quite a while. We never thought about sending him to school then. We cared for his every need. We learned, played and explored places together. That in itself served as an education. When we moved back to Singapore, we just continued with the flow. We have all sorts of support and so much resources that made our choice easier. Being with Constantine all day and night, meant that we had nearly understood his every need. Down to a sneeze, to a mumble, etc, we learned along the way. And we were well aware that he learnt better through play and exploration.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? Find out how much you want this. It is not an easy path, it is not all roses and candies. But it is a very meaningful journey. I would like you to know that it is not about the curriculum or materials or PSLE, it is about building resilience and nurturing the love for learning. Once you have resilience, you can take on anything. And when you have a love for learning, you will learn whatever you need to learn. 14
Wh@ keeps you going?
I am going to be really honest here. The white flag has slipped out from my sleeve several times, only to be stuffed back in. I asked myself, what on earth do I think I am doing? Have I lost my mind? Life would be so much easier if I sent him to school. I can have a stable job teaching others. Then the question appears,"Would he be happier?" Every time I want to give up, I come across yet another new strategy to use with him. He would miraculously progress in the way I had imagined. The sparkle in his eyes when he speaks about something that interests him, brings a lot of life into me. I know deep down, no one at this point in time would know him better than me. How blessed I am to be able to learn with him and be his guide on this journey.

Homeschooling Zhen Xin and her husband Sze Siang view homeschooling more as learning through life and for life. Part of their life includes running a small business, with the involvement of the whole family. Without a fixed curriculum nor timetable, their two boys, Mattias and Mark, picked up some academic and life skills along the way. Though there are good and bad days, Zhen Xin and Sze Siang are thrilled to be on this learning and discovery journey with their 4 children aged 0 -10 years old.
Learn how their children are involved in their work, from being video talents, to packing items, how they bring the children along for work and how the apprenticeship model works for different age groups.
How did you start homeschooling?
All my children have never been to school. I prefer to give my children a longer childhood and to let them learn through authentic settings. My children learn largely through play and books and from seeing how my husband and I do life together.
Wh@ keeps you going?
The joy in my children’s faces when they discover something new on their own. I like to allow my children to explore their surroundings, ask questions and make discoveries. It is very meaningful to explore the joy of learning together with my children.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? Build the family relationships first before finishing up that curriculum. Relationships are what is going to last. In homeschooling, children are used to solving real life problems rather than doing work from an assessment book. .

A Life's Journey We are an extended large family (8 members) where we have members from 5 to 86 years of age. We strongly feel the interaction between multiple generations make a difference in every family member’s life. Gobal is a HR professional, Sujatha is a homemaker and runs the alternative schooling for the kids. Raji is the grandma, who is our “Mother of Values” at home and Grandpa Murugesan, a farmer by profession. Along with little Lithanya and Naghul of 7 and 5 years old respectively, they are great artist and dancers.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? As parents there is always a fear of the future and we don’t even know what the future looks like. Put the trust on your child, give his “TIME” to him and see the wonders he could do to this world and the community around. Be an enabler and help him to become a specialist in whatever he touches. Then you will see a life with a lot of fulfillment for yourself.
How did you start homeschooling?
Life is a journey between two points, a start from the past and a destination into the future. The interesting aspect is we all know the past but predicting the destination is always a moving target, as change is inevitable. Every kid born into this world has an abundance of curiosity to know the whats, whys and hows of everything in life. Their minds are chaotic, and they need to learn to organise that into what they want in life. They should create the structure that suits them best. Every child is unique and the potential that he/she has is exponential. As parents, we felt that we should be enablers and help the child lay their own path to reach their own destinations and not a destination designed by someone else for them.
Wh@ keeps you going?
Kids live in the moment. That is our joy as a family. The happiness towards the freedom the child has when doing what their hearts want them to do means that their minds and bodies will follow. This is an important aspect for creating a path and living a path that they are destined to go on in this journey of life. 16

Her eldest, John, is currently serving NS and has a special interest in video and photography. Her second child, Rebecca, enjoys the arts - singing, painting and baking. Apple’s youngest daughter, Li-Ann, who has Down syndrome, is a compassionate and joyful girl who enjoys crafts and painting. You can read about their beautiful journey at icandoitmama.com.
Apple :
I started homeschooling when John was 3yo. He adored Rebecca when she was born, teaching her many things. When Li-Ann was added to the family, they loved her and played with her. LiAnn enjoyed her siblings and would imitate them as she made sense of the world around her. I saw the growth of the children, a little at a time, how they find their passions and how they learn to relate to one another in different stages of their lives. You can help your children to be one another’s best friends :-)
My homeschool life
Rebecca has been homeschooled since young ,together with her brother and sister. She is one of the High School Day speakers in this year’s convention. She is passionate about creating music, art and media and likes to read psychology books.
Rebecca :
My parents chose to homeschool me as a kid, and we continued up till now. The flexibility homeschooling gives me, fits my interests and personality. Homeschoolers are not abnormal so do not feel like you are from another planet! Haha!

She likes to eat siew mai and wanton noodles and enjoys making crafts such as glitter jars, crepe paper flowers, and cards. She is a joyful painter because she feels happy and energetic when she paints what God shows her. She has learning challenges.
My homeschooling journey
Li-Ann :
I started homeschooling ever since I was young. It is a fun experience. I can get to know new friends and spend time with them. I hope that you will do these activities with your child with special needs.

With a loud voice and a laugh to match, John is an experienced public speaker with more than 5 years of training and more than 200 platforms under his belt. If he is not behind the camera, computer, or on stage, you will find John between the covers of a book or the covers of his bed.

I started homeschooling as that was the educational path that my parents chose. I found that homeschooling gave me the time to pursue and develop my skills in what I am passionate about. As mental health professionals we are concerned about the esteem aspects of mainstream schooling. Moreover, as educators, we feel that kids learn best while taught by their parents. The kids can then be taught positive values as they learn directly from their parents.
What keeps you going?
We believe in our children. Each child is different and requires different approaches towards teaching and learning. We believe kids learn best in their own time and when given their own space.
What advice do you have for firsttimers? Do not be over-ambitious in choosing the “correct” homeschool curriculum for your child. Homeschooling does not adopt a “one-size-fits-all” pedagogical model; and you would need to constantly assess your teaching material and consider whether it remains relevant for your kids. 20

Along the way, we mused over books written by homeschoolers on why they homeschool and were convinced that we were able and positioned to equip our children with life skills, inclusive of academic skills. Our children are our responsibility inclusive of overseeing their education.
Take courage. It is a faith journey, you do not see the full returns at the beginning; take your journey in faith. The path less trodden is better. Educating your children is a privilege and gift. It is yours to give away or yours to possess and enjoy.
Wh@ keeps you going?
Our children keep us going. They appreciate our time and engagement in their lives. We love them dearly. As my oldest graduates high school and proceeds to National Service, our open conversations and musings about life continue to draw us together.

Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? Faith: Enjoy every moment with your children. Keep focusing and remembering that the Lord loves your child more than you do and that He has a great plan for each and everyone of them. (But of course this has to be done many times a day ! ) This reminder will help to drown out the negative voices and doubts that you may constantly be bombarded with. The years will fly by very quickly and as we look back, we would want to remember it as an enjoyable journey. Never let anything strain the relationship between you and your child. Building a good relationship is the key to homeschooling. Never go solo. Always look for groups that are supportive and encouraging. Also seek out experienced homeschooling parents whom you can share your struggles and questions with.
Faith and Daniel have three children, Christian (19), Ekklesia (17) and Ariel (16). They have been homeschooling since 2005. Their family enjoys learning through experience and they see travelling as a very precious way to learn. They value relationships and life lessons above academics. Sau Wan and Kuo Yung have three children too, Jie Xin (19), Zheng Ling (17) & Le En (15). All of them had two years of pre-school education. They are on their 12th year of happy learning. All of them like food, and since the majority of them like the outdoors too, they enjoy taking (and cooking) meals at the beach.

Faith: When we started hunting for a kindergarten for our son, the schools that I thought were good were too expensive for us. Finally, it was an art session that changed my mind. The teachers would hold each child’s hand to draw a picture of their father as a gift for Father’s Day. I thought that the children should be given the freedom to draw anything that they were comfortable with, according to their standard. That would have made a more meaningful gift to the father. I wanted my child to learn according to his pace and not have to match up to other people’s standards. Later, God also revealed to us that He wanted us to take the ownership of bringing up our children in His way and also to bring them up to be His people who are brave enough to turn the tide. Sau Wan: “Why not?” my husband and I thought, so we decided to give it a shot for the primary years. Before I dove into it, I did house visitations to two homeschooling mums, and heard from them that it was so manageable - “Just read, the language will come”. So cool, right?

Homeschooling through High School - the American Option Leading to International Universities (US, UK, Japan)
Shonda is an American citizen who has been living in Asia for 15 years (3 years in Shanghai, 12 years in Singapore). She homeschooled her three children for 14 of the 15 years that they have been overseas. Her daughter (19) is now in her second year of college at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. Her oldest son (17) has been accepted at universities in the UK, and the United States, and is currently deciding where he will study in the fall. Her youngest son (15) is on track to graduate early from high school. He will enter 12th grade in this autumn, and graduate in June 2021.
How did you start homeschooling?
We began homeschooling when we moved to Asia because we wanted to keep the kids on an American curriculum, and the international schools were prohibitively expensive. We did not plan on being in Asia for more than five years, and we thought keeping them on the American curriculum would make the transition going back a little easier. That was fifteen years ago.

I love my kids. My top priority is making sure they develop into compassionate, reasoned individuals, who have the skills they need to thrive, and continue learning on their own. Our homeschooling is nowhere near perfect, but it is the best option we can provide for them.
Wh@ advice do you have for first-timers? Remember three things: First - There will be good days, and bad days. Some days, you’ll be a rock star - with amazing, engaging lessons, followed by a healthy, delicious meal, seated at a table surrounded by smiling, grateful children. Other days, you’ll feel victorious if you just manage to keep everyone out of the hospital, and nobody starves. Most days will fall somewhere in between. Embrace each morning as a new opportunity to keep moving forward. Second - There is no singular “right” way to homeschool. You have to find what works for your family, and often, if you have multiple children, what works brilliantly for one, will not work as well for the other(s). Be flexible. There are numerous pathways to success, and many of them have multiple detours. Third - Be kind and patient with your children, AND YOURSELF.

Secondary homeschooling towards GCE O-Lev,s - Using the GCE O-Level Syllabus Science Laboratory for Primary & Secondary homeschoolers I am a mother of 5, homeschooling since my eldest was in kindergarten. He is 18 now and goes to junior college, having graduated from homeschooling after taking the GCE O-level exam as a private candidate in 2018. I have three more boys aged 16, 14 and 11, all still being homeschooled, and a daughter, 8, who has ASD and attends school at Pathlight School.
Wh@ keeps you going?
I give private tuition on weekends and have been doing so for more than 20 years. I think teaching, observing and getting to know my students who go to regular school and comparing that to what we have been fortunate to experience as homeschoolers is the main fuel that keeps me going. Homeschooling, although extremely challenging and a lot of hard work, is an investment in their education as well as in the development of character and values.
I also teach several classes for groups of homeschoolers. As teens, my children enjoy learning with friends so for subjects I am able to teach, I try to barter trade teaching with other homeschool mums to teach classes that other homeschoolers can join. As science practical is a necessary component of the GCE O-level examinations for chemistry, physics and biology, I have also arranged the rental of a science laboratory since 2017 where I run lab classes for homeschoolers. I also run a science laboratory programme for homeschoolers of primary school age that follows the local primary science syllabus.

What advice do you have for first-timers?
Get to know other homeschoolers - reach out for advice and support, find opportunities for the children to get to know one another and build friendships. These friendships and connections have helped me, especially as the children grow older, in managing to juggle my time homeschooling multiple children. 24
We started homeschooling because I wanted my children to have a broader, more flexible and less academicallyfocused and exam-centric education. I spent a large part of my childhood living overseas and attended a school where we learnt an extensive range of subjects, had wonderfully wide exposure to different nonacademic pursuits and extra-curricular activities, and where students at primary level had no exams. Having come back to Singapore and experienced being in the local school, and being able to contrast that with my earlier experience, I knew that sending my children to public schools here was not what I wished for my children. Homeschooling seemed the best alternative so we took the plunge when my eldest was 6.

I am Heather Low, an American who has lived in Singapore for 20 years and is married to a Singaporean. Half a lifetime ago, I earned a degree in English (Writing) from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. My three children were all born and raised in Singapore and they have all been homeschooled from kindergarten.
How did you start homeschooling?
I wanted to spend more time with my children in their formative years, to help influence their character development and world view. I was reluctant to place them in public schools because of the over emphasis on exam results, especially in early primary. I hoped to develop in them a love of learning and let them learn at their own pace.

Be prepared to work hard, be ready to be confronted with your own insecurities and be open to adjusting your expectations of your children along the way.

My eldest child commented in a truly heartfelt manner that she learned more at home during her chickenpox quarantine than when she was in school. That one remark caused a whole series of reflection and discussion within the family. It was evident that her love for learning was slowly being squelched as a result of the system's 'teaching to the test’.
Wh@ keeps you going?
My children have different ways of exploring the world. Although I contemplated trying other curricula, or even not using any, there were other factors in place that made us go with ACE. Thankfully, my family now appreciates the strengths of ACE and we make accommodations accordingly to make up for its lack. Using an old exercise book, I have a personalised system that allows me to keep track of their work and their academic performance.

How did you start homeschooling?
I had always wanted to stay home and play an active role in my children’s life, witnessing their growth everyday. I started homeschooling when I met another homeschooling family and was impressed at how well mannered and articulate her children were. That deepen my conviction to homeschool and to have the freedom to craft out their education. The most important advice would be to do what brings you joy while homeschooling your children.

Learning Ve%,s We are a social enterprise that provides educational programmes and products. We began our work as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) department of a small company in 2014. As part of our CSR efforts, we had developed an Early Learning Programme (ELP) in which we trained volunteers to provide literacy and numeracy intervention-based teaching to children from poor, multichallenged families. A sub-set of these children had learning challenges. Over the years, we developed teaching materials that worked well with these children, even in the hands of volunteers. We realised that these products could be useful for parents and educators as well, and if there were customers willing to pay affordable prices for these teaching tools, we may be able to build a business over time that helps to support our work with charities. Our little company, Learning Vessels, was born.
Wh@ keeps you going?
We enjoy the process of product development, and seeing children using our products and enjoying them. Also, through our charity-based efforts, we get to witness how children from low-income families are supported by the passionate volunteers we trained and the materials we provided. It’s a privilege! Learning mindfulness is not about gaining intellectual knowledge, but giving ourselves permission to undergo a lifelong journey of understanding our body, our mind and our place in the world, through the direct experience of self-observation. The more we learn to observe everything in a calm and quiet state of mind, the more positive change we will notice about ourselves.

How did you art this busine%?
I started this because fundamentally I believe very much in the Forest School philosophy that children need a space to just be themselves, Adopting the Forest School child-led pedagogy, we provide children with a holistic education experience that nurtures their social skills, emotional well-being, self esteem, resilience, creative thinking and physical development. Our sessions are conducted in the biggest classroom in the world - nature, where children are naturally positively motivated to be active and learn. We instill independence by allowing children to make decisions and do things by themselves. Coaches adopt a scaffolding approach where we create a safe space for the children to explore. Coaches then stand back to observe and intervene only with probing questions that seek to open their way of thinking. Through this way children are empowered, learn to take risk, discover what their strengths are and trust their instincts.

Better Choice Parenting is an organisation that embraces the heart behind effective parenting; to ensure that children grow up with respect, kindness and fun. This was set up by Ruby & Raymond, both of them had experienced the effectiveness of P.E.T. in their lives which they were deeply impacted by it. Therefore, they decided to bring P.E.T. to Singapore to impact the parents here and to urge parents to forego the traditional mindset of parenthood.
What keeps you going?
• We loved how P.E.T. techniques worked for every teachers and parents around the world. It allows the parents to show sympathy and understand their child's behaviours. • P.E.T also allows the child to have an open and honest discussion with their parents since young and therefore as they grow up, many of these children do not go through the "teen rebellion phase.” • Due to the lifelong benefits from the program, we cannot wait to share with the parents on they can be the role-model to teach interpersonal skills to grow and influence their children to be a good communicator.
What do you want people to remember after engaging your services?
Your child does not come with an instruction manual. We need to constantly remind ourselves that as a parent we are not perfect too. We should be open to talk through any problems with our children and spouses to find a solution together. We hoped to reach out to parents to join our events and workshops as we bring more parenting tips into their lives. 36

My Bright Educ@ion Ce"re My Bright Education was established in July 2017. Founders Jia Li Ming and Yu Hui were fellow students in the same faculty at university + husband and wife partnership + teachers of the Chinese language + kids at heart + author of picture books + stay-at-home dad. The founders are gentle on the outside but determined on the inside. They believe that there is always something better in life that is worth exploring and pursuing, and that the purpose of education is to enable a child to become self-aware and to realise himself or herself.
How did you start this business?
We had been deeply saddened to see some children dislike and even hate the Chinese language, and some other children study the Chinese language only for grades and exams. We believe the mother tongue language is a person’s true identity card and the source of one’s creativity and competitive edge that every generation should inherit and develop, not hate and abandon. We also believe that learning and teaching should be a happy as well as a meaningful thing. We are therefore willing to do our very best to achieve this.
Wh@ do you wa" people to remember after engaging your services?
Get close to the mother tongue language, look to the future, grow together with the children, explore the true meaning of education.

We hope we can help more children to happily learn the mother tongue language, thereby enabling them to become self-aware and to realise themselves, and helping them to possess this competitive edge for the future. 37
