Parrot Ownership . . . Are you ready for this? By Madeleine Franco

any years ago, I read an article that suggested, among other things, that owning a pet parrot changes one’s life more than owning any other pet. The statement fascinated me as I contemplated horses, pigs, rats, and reptiles, and I thought about it long and hard. Now having lived it and living it still, I can attest to the statement’s truth, provided one cares to be a responsible parrot owner. The fact is that any responsible pet owner has to be a bit flexible, and yet structured in his approach. Our pets are totally dependent on us for all good things; that’s a large part of what makes them pets! Parrots, for some reason, however, add a few new factors to the equation. Though one hates to anthropomorphize, these include an uncanny intelligence and problem-solving capacity; preferences and opinions; a discernible intolerance of boredom and a need to keep constructively (or destructively) busy; and a longevity paralleling that of a human. As winged creatures, they also seem hard-wired for exceptional mobility and foraging, sometimes in the wild traveling great distances to find food; they are also opportunistic feeders and mischief-makers. And, although they are quite capable of creating what we would commonly refer to as a “mess,” they seem to like their environments clean and they require (yes, require!) frequent bathing. So, just how does a “responsible” parrot owner keep a parrot interested, engaged, entertained, well-fed and cared for, exercised, clean, and busy? You guessed it… In most cases, by changing one’s life entirely!

Parrots don’t warehouse well, and they require time, patience and a certain amount of devotion from their keepers. A parrot needs a size-appropriate sturdy cage, in some cases one capable of withstanding 1,000+ psi of jaw pressure. A parrot also needs toys (things that rattle, ring, swing, and yield to curiosity and a beak); a varied diet; “problems” and puzzles to solve, “out” time and sometimes a good, oldfashioned time out; a temperature- and humidity-appropriate environment; clean water, nutritious, interesting and varied food; socialization and training; good rest and sleep; regular veterinary care; and someone willing to provide all that and more 24/7/365. That someone also needs to recognize that parrots have a high propensity to outlive their abovedescribed servant, and provision must be made for such eventuality. If all that seems like a tall order, it’s really not that onerous. Those whose souls are touched by parrots coast through most of the requirements instinctively and joyfully, because the rewards are great. We joke about parrot-proofing our homes, buying lots of steel, iron and and glass furniture, and knowing we will ultimately have to replace certain things in our homes because we just weren’t paying attention while the parrot was scoping out an opportunity for some destructive fun. So, if you’re ready to become a better person for the discipline that owning a parrot requires and to learn something new about your pet and yourself every day, and if importantly you possess the humility that surely comes in handy to explain the inexplicable, with a simple, “Oh, but it was actually my fault,” then perhaps a parrot is for you. If so, you’re in for quite a long journey of love and selfdiscovery. If not, there are surely a lot of us who can totally understand!

Now that I have a tribe, I take them to the dog park. They get plenty of exercise, while I sit on a concrete bench connected to my phone. No wonder my jeans are getting a tad tight, LOL.

Still, staying focused with multiple dogs and a busy lifestyle is possible. Take one dog to a training session once a week. It keeps them socialized with other dogs and reinforces basic commands. Seek out dog gyms like Smarty Paws that have treadmills. We’re talking concentrated exercise in air-conditioning! During the week, integrate playtime with work time by keeping dog tug and squeaky toys downstairs and upstairs. When I hear the “boomety-boomety-boom” sound of the tribe climbing up, I have a toy ready before they bang against the bed. Tossing one into the frey gets me another fifteen minutes of snooze time before they insist it’s time to get up. Plus, you can just put your dogs in the car and take them for a ride. I don’t know if my pups appreciate the beauty of Southern Nevada as much as I do, but I love spending time exploring with them.

Let’s Go Swimming! In the heat of summer, it can be difficult to find outdoor activities to share with our pets. It may be too hot for walking or hiking, but summer is the PERFECT time to enjoy a cool and refreshing swim with your dog. A cool dip in a pool, lake or stream is the ideal remedy for a hot summer day. If your dog has never been swimming before, it is important to remember that not all dogs know how to swim. It is not an intuitive skill that all dogs possess. While some dogs pick it up quite quickly, others may need a fair amount of help in the beginning. With your assistance and a few helpful tips, you and your dog can be enjoying the cool, invigorating fun of swimming together. For dogs that have never tried swimming, it is important that you introduce them to the water slowly and gently. They will remember their first attempt as either being great fun or very scary. With that in mind, you should never throw or force your dog into the water. Instead, try coaxing him in with praise or even a doggie treat. Let him feel the water on his feet and experience the cool, wet sensation. For swimming pools, the steps are the place to start. It is important that your dog learns that the steps are ALWAYS the place to enter or exit the pool. Placing a vertical marker (like a flag or a potted plant) next to the steps will help him find them when he’s in the water. Each time you enter or exit the pool, say “steps” and have him touch the marker you have set up. He will soon associate the marker with the place to get in and out of the pool.

Coaxing your dog onto the first step of the pool can be a major accomplishment for some dogs. Once you have achieved that, it’s time for swimming! To help your dog swim, place your hands on his sides, holding him in the water so his rear end is up and his body is parallel with the top of the water. As you move through the water together, he should look like he’s running in the water. Some dogs will try to swim using only their front legs instead of using all four. You may need to help move his rear legs for him while he’s first learning. As his skills improve, take him a very short distance from the steps and help him swim to them. Gradually increase the distance he needs to swim to the steps, keeping your lesson times to about 10 minutes. After each successful swim, remember to give him LOTS of hugs and praise. If your dog seems to be having a lot of difficulty staying afloat on his own, the aid of a canine life vest can be very helpful. The extra buoyancy that it provides may be just enough to keep him afloat and build his confidence. As your dog’s swimming skills improve, it is still important to limit your swim time to about an hour and a half. No matter how MUCH fun you’re having, don’t overdo it. Taking frequent breaks for a drink of fresh water and a rest in the shade will be beneficial to you both.

Before and after swimming, your dog will require many of the same precautions we take for fun in the sun. Dogs can get sunburned too. The skin around their nose, eyes, and ears are the most susceptible to sunburn. You may want to ask your veterinarian to recommend a sunscreen for those sensitive areas. After swimming, it is always a good idea to give him a thorough rinse off or even a quick bath with shampoo. After a good rinse, be sure to dry the inside and outside of his ears. With a little practice and patience, you and your dog will be swimming together and enjoying all the fun that swimming provides.

Make Your Backyard More Pet-Friendly This Summer

s I’m writing this the summer has been pretty mild, but sure by the time you’re reading this we’ll be in triple digits. We all like spending more time outdoors but we know that in Las Vegas we are challenged with our blistering heat. Even though our furry family members live primarily indoors, when we’re outside they want to be with us. So how can we make our backyards more pet-friendly this summer?

1 More important than décor is safety.

There are many safety concerns in our backyards, so plants, landscaping materials and surface selections need to be on the top of our list. Dogs especially love to chew and all plants are not compatible with dogs, and if ingested can cause serious health problems. Along with plants, we must look into what they are stepping on. Are there toxins that can be harmful when absorbed by their paws or when they lick them? Please take the time to visit the ASPCA Poison Control website for more information.

2 If you don’t have a pool or don’t want

your pup in it, create their own water park. Instead of placing the kiddie pool on top of the grass, put it in the ground. Pick one that is shallow enough for your pet to easily get in and out of and a safe size for them. Also by putting in the ground it will keep them from chewing it up, dragging it around or

through the doggie door as we’ve all seen on the hilarious YouTube video. You can surround it with pavers or even incorporate it into your pool design. Now, yes you will have to drain it, but there are simple siphons you can get at any home improvement store. There’s even cute pools shaped like bone bones that claim to be chew resistant.

3 Consider a pondless fountain like a floor

or planter fountain water feature. They’ll have fun trying to catch the water while you enjoy watching them and listening to the serene sound of the flowing water. Being that Las Vegas is a water crisis area, don’t run it all day, just when you’re home so you and Fido can both enjoy it.

4 We now have water for them to play in,

play with, but more important is water for them to drink. My girls have three different places for water. With their beddies, the kitchen and on the patio. Instead of plain water bowls, I put them in decorative planters and incorporated them in with the other planters on my patio. If you have larger dogs you use different heights.

5 Always have a shaded area they can cool down under. They sunburn just like us, especially short-haired dogs. Whether a dog house with air conditioning and/or misters, yes my girlfriend had both for her pups, or a fun Puppy Cabana with a thatched roof, be creative. You can find

hundreds of ideas on Pinterest.

6 Just like us, they like to sit back and

relax. My Millie is a sun worshiper so she prefers the cool deck before the afternoon sun. Whereas, Matilda likes her own fluffy pillow, which I’ve made out of Crypton fabric. Water runs right off these fabrics which make them perfect for pets and especially outdoors. If your little or big one likes a chair of his or her own, take a thrift store Adirondack chair and cut the legs off to make it pet height. You can buy them specifically for pets or make it a DIY project and save money for those patio parties. Ottomans also make a great place for them to lay. If you have little ones, you can adjust the height by changing the legs.

7 If it’s hot on your feet, it’s hot for

them also. Bring color and pattern to your patio with an area rug. Buy one made for the outdoors or something inexpensive that will last a couple seasons. If you have artificial grass, remember it’s plastic and gets piping hot. We put up an automatic awning to cover it during the day. Yes, we already know we’re crazy puppy parents.

While humans account for most house fires, nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidently started by our pets. To aid in reducing the estimated 500,000 pets affected by home fires, the American Kennel Club® and ADT Security Systems joined together to declare a National Pet Safety Day. While this year the Day is July 15th, for the ones we love, it should be every day. Curiosity and being food driven are two predominate traits, regardless of the critter. Those traits can turn deadly in ways that may never have occurred to you. A couple in Oklahoma returned home to find that their dog had spied a cake on the stove top, and in her attempt to have her own piece of cake, her paw accidently hit the stove knob and turned on the gas burner under the cake pan. The house filled with smoke, triggering the smoke detector. Firefighters arrived the house and dog were saved.

To honor the spirit of this Day, the AKC and ADT are offering a variety of tips for pet safety and fire prevention. For example, something as commonplace as a glass water bowl can lead to a flame. If the empty bowl were flipped over on a wooden deck, the dish could magnify the sun’s rays, starting a fire. The simple solution: choose stainless steel or ceramic water bowls instead. Ensure that your pet is not left around unattended open flames, such as burning candles or a fire in your fireplace. Remove or cover stove knobs. Stoves or cook tops are the number one cause of pet started fires. Make sure you know your role if there is a fire. How will you escape and how will you save your pet? Keep collars and leashes where they can be easily reached if a quick evacuation needs to happen. Develop a pet-friendly escape route and keep a pet alert sign in your window indicating the number of pets in your home. It will be a great help to house aid rescuers. Using a smoke detector which is connected to a monitoring center will provide an extra layer of protection for your pet, especially when you are away from the house.

Canine flu has been in the news since April because of an outbreak in the Chicago area. Many Cook County shelters temporarily were closed and dog events cancelled. Since then cases have been reported in other states â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana. No cases of the 2015 canine flu have been reported in Nevada. The 2015 canine influenza virus is a different strain of virus from the 2004 virus. Though no cases of the 2015 virus have been reported in Nevada, it is extremely important to know the signs and symptoms of canine influenza and call your vet if you suspect your dog has the flu.

he virus causes an upper respiratory infection that only affects dogs and can mimic clinical signs of kennel cough. Dogs that are more at risk of catching the disease are those that go to dog parks, doggy day care, grooming, and boarding facilities. It first showed up in 2004 in racing greyhounds and has since spread throughout many states in the US.

What are the clinical signs of Canine Flu?

Half of the animals infected with the virus get over the virus and never develop clinical signs. The other 50% of dogs infected have listlessness, nasal congestion, fever, and cough. A small percentage of dogs also develop pneumonia. Infected dogs are contagious whether or not they develop clinical signs. Dogs usually develop signs after 2-5 days after being exposed to the virus, and the course of infection lasts anywhere from 2-4 weeks. Dogs are contagious before they show any signs of disease and will shed the virus after they get over the disease.

How is Canine Flu transmitted?

The virus is transmitted through secretions and direct contact with an infected dog.

How do I prevent my dog from getting Canine Flu?

The best thing to do to prevent infection is to vaccinate your dog against Canine Influenza. Keeping your dog healthy and avoiding exposure to high risk situations are important ways to prevent infection and keep him safe.

How does the Canine Flu vaccine work?

The Canine Influenza vaccine works similarly to human flu vaccine in that it will decrease the severity of clinical signs of the disease, it will not prevent infection. The vaccine also cuts 16

down the time that dogs shed the virus and are contagious to other dogs. The vaccine consists of an initial series of 2 shots and then one shot yearly.

Does the Bordetella vaccine offer any protection against Canine Flu?

The Bordetella vaccine targets the main bacteria responsible for kennel cough. It does not offer any protection from Canine Influenza.

What do I do if my dog develops a cough?

It is always recommended to take your dog to a veterinarian if he or she develops a cough. Among the complications of Canine Influenza there is the risk of developing pneumonia. Your veterinarian can determine whether any further treatment or diagnostic test are required to keep your dog from developing complications like pneumonia and to keep your dog healthy.

Fish have a calming and relaxing effect on children as they watch them swim through the water. That is why so many pediatricians and dentists have aquariums in their waiting rooms. Children naturally love to watch them swim and it can help reduce their anxieties. A fish tank in a child’s room can help young children sleep better. The soft light serves as a night light and the swimming fish helps them relax so they drift gently to sleep.

Whether you are considering buying a new home or staying in your current residence, it is vitally important that you ensure your dog’s safety. Dogs are amazing, but they do have a tendency to be mischievous from time to time.

Here are a few tips to make sure that your home is safe for your dog.

EASY ACCESS CABINETS AND SHELVES. Dogs are smart and where there is a will there is a way. Make sure that your new home has cabinets that your dog is unable to open. They should be assembled at eye level, higher, or have a latch. Medications, lotions, cleaning materials, hazardous materials, and antifreeze are extremely dangerous to dogs. To make certain that your dogs do not ingest these items you should store them in high places or install childproof latches to prevent your dog from having a “toxic buffet.”

CLEAN GARAGE. Garages and driveways may contain antifreeze from brake fluid, radiator coolant, windshield agents, and paints. Just a small amount of antifreeze can be fatal to your loved one. Make sure that you clean these areas thoroughly with a pressure washer. If you choose to store these items in your garage, place them in high areas or purchase antifreeze free products.

WINDOW TREATMENTS. Living in Las Vegas, window treatments are a necessity, but they also pose a choking hazard to dogs. Any low hanging or looped cords should be adjusted so that dogs are not able to get tangled and suffocate. This can be avoided by adjusting the cord length or cutting them and re-tying them shorter.

PLANTS. When buying a home with landscape already installed it is important to know what types of plants your dog will be encountering on a daily basis. Make sure that your plants are pet safe. Be cautious of any amaryllis, aloe vera, mums, lilies, and poinsettia. ASPCA’s has an extensive list of toxic and non-toxic plants. Identify any toxic plants and replace them with plants that you and your dog with both enjoy. 22

FENCING. Dogs love to spend time in the backyard relaxing and letting the sun kiss their fur. Check that your side gates and fencing is sufficient so that your dog will not bypass these barriers. If you have a puppy or a very small dog they may be able to slip through the gate bars. Consider buying a metal mesh at your local hardware store. Don’t worry about the mesh matching the color of your gate. You can easily spray paint the mess to match. Remember that dogs big and small like to dig and bury. All fences should be set inward facing to detour your dog from digging and tunneling. The last thing we want is for our pooches to take a solo tour of the neighborhood.

UPDATE RESIDENTIAL INFORMATION. In the instance that your dog decides to go on their own excursion, you want to ensure that they are returned to your care. If your dog is micro-chipped update your new residence and contact information. If you do not know the microchip company, ask your preferred veterinarian and they can assist you. In the instance that your dog has tags, update the information as soon as possible. Also make sure that the tags are comfortably secured to your pet. As homeowners and pet lovers we want our home to be a place of comfort and safety for both us, our family, and our pets. A few small adjustments will make your current or future home safe and pleasurable for everyone.

H2O The old saying, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink, is true of cats also. We know it is impossible to make a cat do something he doesn’t want to do. Getting cats to drink enough water is a challenge - they do not have a strong natural thirst drive. They are designed to get their water needs met through their food. In the wild their prey contained 75 percent water. House cats, especially ones on dry food only, usually need a little encouragement to drink enough water.

Here are a few tips to encourage your cat to drink more water: • Provide fresh water – Refill your cat’s bowl with fresh water at least

once a day. The bowl should be washed daily with a mild soap. Make sure it is rinsed thoroughly because any residue can burn your cat’s tongue. It also will give the water an unpleasant taste.

• Select a cat-friendly bowl - Choose a bowl that is wide and shallow

For my two cats I have a traditional water bowl, a Petmate water bottle and two different types of fountains in different areas of my home. They all get used. Their favorite watering hole, of course, is the bathroom sink and, of course, mom gives in a few times a day!

Learning Natural Horsemanship teaches your horse to respect and recognize you as the leader—in and out of the saddle. Western riding is popular in the United States where it evolved to meet the needs of working cowboys. The Western saddle is designed for riding long distances and provides a deep, secure seat. Once a cow is roped, the lariat–or lasso–is wrapped around the saddle horn. Western riders use only one hand on the reins. The horse is trained to turn away from the pressure of the reins on its neck. This is known as “neck” reining. Western horses have slow gaits that are easy to ride including a two-beat gait called a “jog” and a three-beat gait called a “lope.” The Western rider can try Roping; Cutting, separating a single cow from the herd; Reining, performing a precise pattern of circles, spins, and stops at speed; and Trail, negotiating obstacles such as a bridge or gate. English riding is popular throughout the world. The English saddle is lightweight and designed to give the horse and rider full freedom of movement. The rider can easily balance over the horse’s shoulders when jumping or racing. The English horse has faster gaits than a Western horse. At the trot, the rider “posts” or rises out of the saddle 32

in rhythm with the horse’s stride. An English rider uses two hands on the reins. This is known as “direct” reining. English riders may choose to ride Hunt Seat or Saddle Seat. Hunt Seat is a riding style based on the British tradition of fox hunting. Hunt Seat riders can also try Jumping and Eventing, which includes cross-country and stadium jumping. Saddle Seat was developed to show off the high-stepping gaits of such horse breeds as the Tennessee Walking Horse and American Saddlebred. Dressage is the French word for “training” or “schooling.” Dressage teaches the horse to respond to subtle cues from the rider. The horse’s natural athleticism is developed as training progresses. Similar to the English saddle, the Dressage saddle allows the rider to sit deeper and ride with a straighter leg. In competition, Dressage horses are ridden with two sets of reins. At the highest levels, the horse and rider appear to be dancing. Therapeutic riding uses the rhythmic movements of the horse’s body as a form of therapy for those challenged with physical and mental disabilities. Researchers are also studying the social dynamics of free-roaming horse herds to learn how non-predatory animals establish leadership. This is revolutionizing our business leadership models.

Pets are important family members, and many of us bring them on vacation with us. But traveling with pets can be challenging and involves a good amount of planning ahead. Be sure to do your research in advance of the trip, so you’re sure to find a warm welcome at your destination, with no unexpected surprises. MAKE SURE YOUR PET IS SUITED FOR TRAVEL

Pets who are aggressive or fearful are not good candidates for travel. Elderly or sick animals might not endure travel as well as they used to. Your veterinarian will be able to advise you. If your pet is not good with travel, you should consider a reliable pet-sitter.

CHOOSE A PET-FRIENDLY DESTINATION

Planning a pet-friendly vacation means your pet is going to be spending the majority of the time out and about with you. Not every destination is suitable to bring a pet. Many national parks and beaches ban pets. Make sure there are pet-friendly activities that you both will enjoy!

FIND A HOTEL THAT IS PET-FRIENDLY

Many hotels will gladly accept pets but keep in mind that some charge fees or require a security deposit. Others have weight limits or breed restrictions. Never leave your dog alone. Even the most well-trained pet can cause damage, bark continuously when left unsupervised in an unfamiliar place.

TAG YOUR PET

Put a tag on your pet’s collar that includes your name, address, phone number and rabies vaccination. Along with tags, many owners choose to get their pets microchipped so if they do get lost, local shelters can find the animal in a national database.

SECURE YOUR PET

Keep your pet safe in a well-ventilated crate or carrier that is large enough for him to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. You can also use a pet harness specifically made for dogs. Seatbelts for people are dangerous for dogs.

A Nevada statute makes it unlawful for cats and dogs to remain unattended in a parked or standing vehicle. Another statute requires owners to provide outdoor pets with shelters that remain cool during a period for which the National Weather service has issued a heat advisory and with sufficient amount of food and water to sustain it in a healthy condition. In Clark County outside pets must be provided with supplemental cooling such as a mister along with adequate shelter, food and water.

Why do we say the Dog Days of Summer? This phrase dates back to ancient Rome. In summer the “dog star” or Sirius rises and sets with the sun. The ancient Romans believed that its heat increased the heat of the sun creating a period of hot and sultry weather. This extreme heat caused trouble in ancient times and Sirius was blamed for them. Troubles like hunting dogs won’t hunt, fish won’t bite, diseases are spread and wounds won’t heal were all blamed on Sirius. The phrase “Dog Days” was used to describe this time of extreme heat and the troubles it caused. Today we use the phrase “Dog Days of Summer” to describe the lazy hot days of July and August. A time when we do fun things to keep cool…..like playing in the water and staying cool with our dogs rather than blaming Sirius!
