A five year anniversary is quite a milestone –

we looked back literally at our 30 past issues and it was definitely nostalgic. We’ve covered a lot of topics. The publication has grown substantially in distribution numbers, readership, and page count. Growth is good! Businesses have to pay attention to numbers to remain successful. Yet what is success? We love the poem by Ralph Emerson Waldo, What is Success? For us, it is the best answer to that question.

What is Success? To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. e’re officially starting our sixth year – a major milestone that was made possible by so many people: our readers, advertisers, writers, distribution team, “go-to tech” experts and the many people who encouraged and promoted us.

Thank you everyone!

Reaching this milestone is a time to reflect – where did the five years go? It is also a time to look forward to the next five years – what do we want to accomplish? One question that we’re often asked is why we started the publication. As background, Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine is a publication of Shasta Media Connection which also publishes Homes Illustrated. As pet lovers we felt that the best way for us to contribute to the well being of pets was to use our skills and experience to publish a pet magazine. Our purpose is to serve the local pet community by providing an informative and educational resource for all pet parents including those with non-traditional pets. Our topics are selected to increase awareness on a variety of issues of importance to pet parents and animal lovers. We add inspiration, encouragement and humor as well. We promote pet adoptions and fostering. One of our goals is to help bring the pet community together by providing a platform for rescues and shelters. The Las Vegas pet community welcomed us so graciously – we’re proud to be part of such an active and vital community. Each issue features nine pets available for adoption through local shelters and rescues. Interacting with readers is so meaningful and enjoyable - we appreciate their willingness to share personal experiences. We absolutely love the pet photos that are 6

calendar helps keep readers aware of what is happening in the pet community. The calendar is updated on our website and we post event reminders on facebook and twitter.

Our beloved dog, Darby, was featured on our first issue, Sept/Oct 2011. She truly was the inspiration for the Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine. The handsome dog on the cover is Toby Tiger. It seemed appropriate to feature him on this cover representing the beginning of the next five years. We grieved the loss of Darby but we knew she would have wanted us to open our home to a dog in need and we decided to foster. Toby needed to be in a home with no other pets which made our home perfect. It wasn’t long before we knew that Toby was in his forever home. He is a happy boy and has filled our hearts with love. What changes will the next five years bring? We can’t predict the future; however, we will continue to work hard to grow our readership because that will benefit more pets. Our focus is our readers. Every pet parent and pet has a personal story. We know that you face challenges as a pet parent; some of you are struggling with the illness of a pet, or have recently lost a pet. We wish we could personally hear all of your stories and share your experiences.

The real reason we exist is the pets – the ones who’ve shared our lives and the ones who continue to share our lives including the pets of our readers, advertisers and everyone affiliated with LVPSM. We hope that our work makes a difference in the lives of all animals.

Remembering the PETS who inspired LVPSM Pets We’ve Loved & Lost

Darby

Darby’s story was featured in our first issue. Written by Linda Fredericks, Against All Odds, Darby Survives, shares Darby’s experience with Valley Fever. She was the inspiration for the Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine – a tangible way to honor her life. We loved her from the first day we brought her into our home and hearts at the age of twelve weeks until the day fifteen years later when she peacefully passed over the Rainbow Bridge. It was one of the saddest days in our lives. She remains forever in our hearts – her memory is still the inspiration for LVPSM!

Harley the Harlequin Great Dane and Therapy Dog; he was a gentle giant both in size and in the love in his heart. He was featured regularly on our Kid’s Scene page and loved sharing tips about children and pets with our younger readers. At events he was always a huge hit with everyone. He loved children and they loved him. He loved his work as a therapy dog and brought so much joy to everyone who met him. When Harley left us in 2014 he left huge paw prints on our hearts.

Though I’ve always loved animals and shared my homes with many kinds of pets, I was content that my pet-parenting days were over. But then I saw a picture of Abigail on facebook. It was love at first sight - we bonded instantly. She was older and I was blessed to share her few remaining years. She rekindled my desire to have pets. Since her death I opened my home and my heart to two more cats.

Stompy

Stompy was my beloved little turtle friend who brought me so much joy. She would come to me when I called her, stomping across the yard at full speed to receive her apple treats. That always made me smile. She was always by my side when I was working in the yard, always curious about what I was doing and wanting to be a part of it. I miss that. Next month, I will plant our patch of winter grass as I always have – this time without my little friend. “Don’t worry, Stompy… as always, I will be careful not to step on you. I know you will be there, right behind me, in spirit.”

THYROID DISEASE IN THE DOG & CAT, HARD TO DIAGNOSE BUT REWARDING TO TREAT By Cade Lavengco, DVM Hospital Director, Town Center Animal Hospital

Veterinarians consider thyroid inefficiencies in dogs and cats as one of the BIG THREE endocrine disorders that we see on a regular basis. HYPO-thyroidism in dogs and HYPER-thyroidism in cats have very distinct differences. HYPURR-thyroidism vs. HYPO-thyroidism what’s the difference? While I was in school I always got confused on which disease affected the dog and which affected the cat. That was until one professor cleared it up for me. He said you can remember that cats get HYPERthyroidism because they PURRRR. So from then on I always said HYPURRR-thyroidism and never got them confused again. There is a hallmark sign that veterinarians always look for when trying to diagnose hyperthyroidism. Owners will come in and say “Doc, my cat has a great appetite but is losing weight at a constant rate”. Some owners report that their cat will even try to steal their food off the plate. Hyperthyroidism is generally a disease of older cats, 13 years of age is the average age of diagnosis. Hypothyroidism is a dog disease. On average, hypothyroidism is easier to detect by owners because normally active or hyper dogs become very lazy and lose their appetite yet gain an excessive amount of weight quickly. Another classic sign is the sudden loss of clumps of fur especially on the tail causing a “rat-tail” appearance.

Simple, but not simple. Veterinarians struggle at times with diagnosing pets with an illness that will require the owner to give medication for the rest of the pet’s life. The most adequate way to determine if a dog or cat has a thyroid issue is to measure the amount of total T4 hormone which remains fairly stable in the bloodstream. Based on the measurement of the

total T4 level along with the clinical signs the pet is exhibiting, a diagnosis may be made and medicine started. There are those few cases where an additional test is required to confirm the diagnosis. This additional test is called a Free T4. A high or low Free T4 with high or low total T4 with clinical signs of the disease is considered the gold standard way to diagnose the disease.

Meds and testing for life? Once a diagnosis has been made animals will have to be on medications for life. It is also very important that blood levels be closely monitored. There are alternative treatment options for cats. Your veterinarian may suggest a diet that can help to lower thyroid levels. If your cat tolerates this diet and the disease is controlled then medication may not be necessary. There is also a procedure called radioactive iodine therapy. For those cats that qualify there are special centers that perform a procedure that completely cures them of the disease.

My hope is that you now have a better understanding of the thyroid diseases that affect dogs and cats and are able to identify some common signs associated with each. Of all the diseases that affect dogs and cats this one is the most rewarding to treat. Once your pet is diagnosed and treated you will see an immediate response to the medication and most pets return to their normal happy selves!

COCKATIEL A bird can be a wonderful and affectionate pet for many people. With so many beautiful and unique breeds to choose from, selecting the right bird for you can sometimes be difficult. If you’re looking for a sociable, gentle bird that craves human interaction, a Cockatiel might be the perfect choice. Cockatiels average about 14 inches in length and have an average life span of 15-25 years. They come in a variety of colors, ranging from grey, pale yellow, white, cinnamon, or silver. They are typically very socialable birds with a gentle and sweet disposition. Cockatiels enjoy human interaction and need to be played with, talked to, and handled frequently. Like many pets, they love to have their heads affectionately stroked. In fact, Cockatiels will often reciprocate by preening your hair or eyebrows. Since Cockatiels are very intelligent birds, they need mentally stimulating activities as well. They LOVE to play games and learn new tricks! Some birds can learn how to perform tricks like ringing a bell, walking up a ladder, mimicking sounds, or whistling tunes. Some Cockatiels, particularly males, can even be taught to talk. As with any pet, there are a few Cockatiel behaviors that some people find troublesome. Cockatiels can be very loud, particularly if they’re not getting enough attention. The may whistle, screech, or bang on their cage if they are unhappy or feel neglected. Additionally, Cockatiels (like most birds) are somewhat messy to clean up after. They tend to shed small feathers and toss their food around when they eat. Sweeping up around their cage will need to become part of your daily cleanup routine.

If you are willing and prepared to take on the long-term commitment of Cockatiel ownership, you are sure to be rewarded with years of joy and love from your new-found friend. An affectionate, playful Cockatiel might be just what you’ve been looking for. 14

This day was established to honor our pets both past and present and to recognize the important roles they play in our lives. This is a good day to reflect on the pets you have loved and lost. Coping with the loss of a pet is very difficult. Working on our anniversary issue and reflecting on the pets we loved and lost was very difficult. It was our way of honoring the roles they played in our lives.

Here are a few suggestions to help you to remember and honor your pet.

Write Out Your Feelings In A Journal – Many people have found support from writing – some write about happy memories while others write letters saying their “good byes”.

Look At Old Photos

–You can just browse through a collection of photos and relive precious memories. You can create a photo album visually highlighting their life with you. Photos can be added to your journal to stimulate creative expressions of memories and feelings.

Create A Special Memorial Area In Your Yard. Plant trees, shrubs and flowers to memorialize your pet.

Honor Your Pet On Special Days

– It is important to remember your pet on other special days such as your pet’s birthday or adoption, holidays, and other family events. These events often trigger painful feelings but it is important to find ways to remember your pet on special occasions.

Share Your Stories And Memories with a friend or consider joining a support group. Remember that you are not alone – we know the pain of losing a beloved pet.

BUSTING MYTHS about adopting from a shelter By Elizabeth Parker

hen thinking about bringing a new pet into your home, one question that many ponder is whether to buy or adopt.

The list goes on, however, the result is the same. The puppies and kittens wind up in a rescue group and are waiting to get adopted!

To simplify that question and clarify misconceptions, there are key points to keep in mind and myths to dispel regarding adoption.

Myth: Rescue Pets are Damaged Goods

Adopting a pet is not only a rewarding experience but, in essence, you are saving more than one life. Most rescue groups have volunteers who foster animals until those animals find a forever home. These volunteers not only provide shelter for a foster pet, but they often have pets of their own, essentially limiting how many they can help. If you adopt from a rescue group, you are enabling the fosters to provide shelter for another pet until THAT pet finds a forever home. Ultimately, by adopting, you’ve helped save two lives. Some people have an aversion to adoption based on myths. However, those myths are simply untrue.

Myth: You Can’t Adopt a Purebred from a Rescue Group

False! You would be surprised at how many purebreds are dropped off by their owners. Sometimes, people adopt dogs without researching the breed, only later discovering that they are more work than they had expected. The breed is not a good fit for their lifestyle, which then forces them to re-evaluate their decision. Those purebreds are then surrendered to the nearest rescue group, waiting to have a family of their own!

Myth: Rescue Groups Only Have Senior Pets

Not true. I’ve seen more puppies and kittens get dropped off than I care to admit. Sometimes the puppies were a “surprise” from a well-meaning family member, and the new owner wasn’t prepared, or the pet was an impulse buy, and the new owner realizes that they don’t have the time or resources to take care of a young pup. 18

Again, False! Most rescue pets have hearts made from the purest of gold. They are not less affectionate than other dogs. They appreciate a good hike, cuddle time, play time, and family. While some may have behavioral issues, that can hold true for any dog, whether they were rescued or purchased. With patience and training, these behaviors can be corrected.

Myth: Rescue Groups Ask Too Many Questions and Charge too Much

While rescue groups may ask questions, remember, they need to ensure that your home is going to be the pet’s forever home. They ask pertinent questions to protect both you and the pet. Their goal is to make certain that the pet will live with a well-suited family. The cost to adopt usually includes vaccinations as well as altering of the pet. Many also include a microchip, which registers the dog with a company should the dog ever get lost or stolen. If you had to pay a veterinarian, the cost for these services would be much higher.

Overall, rescuing a pet is an amazing experience and will provide both pet and owner with a lifetime of love and memories. Most rescue groups will work with you to find the pet that is a good fit for your lifestyle and family.

oving is always such a stressful time. With so many details to arrange and boxes to pack, it’s no wonder we get stressed out. At least we know why the house is suddenly in shambles and nothing is where it is supposed to be. Unfortunately, our pets don’t know what the plan is or why their bed and favorite toys are disappearing into a box. Moving is stressful to them as well. With a few helpful tips, you can alleviate some of their anxiety and make moving a much calmer experience for you and your pets. Before moving day, pack an “overnight bag” for your pets with enough food, kitty litter, toys and grooming supplies to sustain them for the first few days of unpacking. Seeing all of their own personal items will help ease the stress of a new environment. On moving day, try to keep your pets in the quietest area possible. Clearing out a room in your existing home where you can keep them confined is always a good idea. Remember to check in on them regularly and make sure they have plenty of food and water. When it’s time to transport your pets, it is best to use your own vehicle. Keep them safely restrained in dog or cat carriers that can be secured with a seatbelt. Birds should also be transported in secure cages. Covering their cages with a towel or blanket can help ease the stress of the drive. Once they are in the car, be sure to keep their carriers closed until they are safely located in a secure room of the new home. Pets can become scared and confused in a new neighborhood and can easily get lost. Be sure to update your pets’ tags or microchip information with the new address and telephone number as well. If possible, you should move your household items before you move your pets. Set up at least one room of your new home where your pets can be safely confined while you continue setting up the rest of the house. Be sure to provide them with their favorite toys and items that are familiar to them. As you slowly introduce them to the rest of the house, show them where there food bowls and litter boxes are now located. Be sure to give them lots of attention as you resume your normal feeding, walking and cuddling routine. With a little encouragement, they will be eager to explore their new home with their favorite person –

Use color and aromatherapy to support your dog’s training and wellness program for every stage of life. Whether you just rescued a dog and are bringing her into your home or whether you are helping a momma dog deliver her babies you can use color and aroma to ease the transition. Used properly, you can be integrate both easily into your daily routine with results you will both enjoy.

USING COLOR

Color affects mood. Consider the space where your dog spends most of her time. If she has a private space such as a pen or a crate think about what colors are present in that area. Take note of how you feel looking at the colors in that space and imagine what it may be like for your dog. What response are you trying to promote? Now match the desired response to the colors on the chart. If your dog hangs out on the couch or your bed, you can use blankets in these areas and you can assess how your dog responds to the colors you’ve introduced to the area. Does she gravitate there with a likeness to the area, does she try to peel off blankets or avoid an area she previously enjoyed? If your dog is refusing her usual favorite resting spots it may be the color you have chosen is overwhelming and another color should be considered. When initially exposed to a new color, your dog should have a chance to move away if she so wants. For a dog that enjoys nuisance barking, you may choose a collar or bandana with a combination of calming colors along with a training program to address the problem behavior. If you have a dog that is hyper vigilant or easily aroused and wish to promote calmness, you might consider adding blue to her area and would want to stay away from stimulating colors such as red or orange. These colors would be more appropriately used for the dog that is confident, however needs more energy running agility at a competition.

Think about your reaction to scent when you walk into a spa. Was it a woodsy or green smelling aroma and did it remind you of enjoying nature in peace? You can create that feel-good sensation for your dog at home or while traveling by using essential oils. Essential oils are made from raw plant material and are extremely concentrated and highly aromatic. It’s important to note that your dog’s sense of smell is far greater than yours, so as to not overwhelm her with aroma or worse to create an aversion, it’s best to start with a diluted amount.

CHOOSING AN ESSENTIAL OIL

Likewise, consider the intended use and purpose for this oil, how it was sourced, formulated, packaged and labeled. Is it used to promote calmness, soothe tired muscles or to give you energy? And is it your intention to use aromatherapy to enhance training, promote harmony in a household with multiple pets or to create a sense of relaxation and calmness?

IMPRINTING AN ESSENTIAL OIL

A common mistake people make is using an oil without properly imprinting it for its intended purpose. For instance, the show dog who lacks confidence in the ring should first be introduced to the oil of choice during a training session where she exhibits good teamwork and confidence. Once a positive association has been made, the owner can then count on that oil to be accepted and promote confidence for the dog while training or competing. Similarly, using an essential oil that is commonly used for calmness, such as Lavender during a time of distress without properly imprinting it can create an aversion to the oil itself.

WAYS TO USE COLOR

USING AROMATHERAPY

Recommended Application of Essential Oils: Diffuse - Use a diffuser with water and essential oil in room; 4 to 5 drops with water. Mist - Use essential oils in a bottle of water to mist your dog’s fur, bedding, or room. If dog doesn’t like being sprayed down, spray your hands and pet your dog with wet hands; 1 oz of distilled water: 1 drop of essential oil. Topically – Place a few drops of essential oil in your hands and then directly onto your dog’s fur.

You can also dilute essential oils in carrier oils such as olive oil or coconut oil. As with color, it is also important to give your dog the option of enjoying the aroma you are trying to imprint, while allowing her to move away if so desired.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR USING OILS: 1. Purity of Oil – make sure essential oil is biologically active, responsibly sourced and distilled and has therapeutic value. 2. Imprint Oil – choose the appropriate setting to promote the desired response. 3. Dilute Oil – less is more. 4. No Paw Pads – paws are sweat glands and must be kept clean. 5. Use caution when using essential oils around other small animals.

hen it comes to our pets, there’s almost nothing we won’t do for them. Most of us even change our lifestyle to accommodate for their needs. Our love for them knows no boundaries. In our homes we like to be comfortable and know what’s comfy to us. But what about your pets? Have you created a comfy environment for them? Someplace they can call their own. Where they can just chill out. When we bring a new furry family member into our home, we don’t know what they like or where that comfy place will be, so give them some options to try out. We all have our different comfort levels and so do your pets.

When we got our Maddy, I bought this dog bed I thought she would love. Plus it was so cute, fashionable and worked with the colors in my family room. Guess what? She never went in it so off to a rescue it went. What she loved were plain old bed pillows. She was what we called our Pillow Princess. Whereas, Matilda likes throws she can ball up. Millie is content to just lay on the carpet. For their pillows and throws I buy ones that are the color of my carpet. This way they blend in and don’t jump out at you as much as pillows and throws on the floor.

Now that they are comfy and cozy, how about feeling safe and creating a stress-free environment. A friend of mine has a McCaw and Parrot. A couple years ago her home was broken into and she decided to get security shutters. After a week she noticed that the birds were misbehaving more than normal. After talking with her veterinarian, she found out that they needed visual stimulation. So she put a protective coating on her window and switched out the pleated shade for a shutter. It allowed them to see outside and yet provided enough privacy where she still felt comfortable.

Millie likes to lay in the corner of the sectional. When we first got her and I saw that was her safe and comfy place, I folded up a comforter for her. O.k. to be really honest, I also wanted to keep the dog hair down. It wasn’t something I planned on leaving but it’s a permanent fixture now. Anytime I take it away to throw it into the wash or when I have someone over, you can just see it on her face she is not a happy camper. The minute I put it back, 26

My girls are crate trained, they even go in during the day to take a nap. It’s one of their safe places. Maybe it’s because they have tempurpedic foam beds. And of course Matilda has a throw. When looking for any type of bed, microfiber is a great fabric. It’s easy to maintain and the hair comes off with a lint brush. Crypton is also a super stain, water and bacteriaresistant fabric. Water actually runs right off the fabric, so cleaning is a breeze.

But what if you have a pet that goes crazy when they see someone outside the window. Even though they may like to look outside, for some the visual stimulation can be stressful and sometimes they need the outside world blocked out. For one client, we installed remote control roller shades behind her shutters. The headrail was so small you didn’t see it. Then when she went out she just pushed a button and they all came down. She preferred this over going around and closing all the shutters.

So as you are designing your home, think of what can you do to make your home comfortable and feel safe for the whole family. ne of the easiest lizards to keep, they are moderately sized and have a fantastic personality. The Blue Tongue Skinks from Australia and adjacent islands are the most popular and commonly kept. Blue Tongue Skinks are ground dwelling and can get up to a bit over 2 ft in length. They have smooth, glossy scales and are smooth to the touch. Some other Blue Tongue Skinks, found only in Australia, such as Shingleback Skinks, have very keeled scales, giving them a pine cone textured body. Blue Tongue Skinks are laid back and easy. They feed on a variety of foods, Ground turkey, canned dog and cat foot, small mice, crickets, roaches, and various fruits and vegetables are eaten with relish. Each Skink has its own personal preferences, so make sure to ask the place or person you are getting your Skink from what it likes to eat. Then experiment and find out more for yourself.

Use a thermostat or rheostat to make this work. Place a hide over the hot spot. There are many commercial hides out there that would work for this. The goal is to make the Skink feel secure. At the other end of the enclosure, at the cool end, place a water bowl big enough for the Skink to sit in. Change the water daily. Also on the cool end, add another hiding place. This way your Skink can choose what temperature it wants to be at and still feel secure. Make sure you have a secure top. Although Blue Tongues are not the greatest climbers, escapes are possible. Always keep you enclosures secure. On top of the screen place a UVB lamp that spans the length of the tank. UVB is not necessarily needed for Blue Tongues due to their varied diet, but I recommend the UV light just the same. It sure won’t hurt. I also recommend adding a quality calcium and multivitamin supplement to their food at each feeding.

If you are looking to take a few pounds off of your pooch or kitty, try reducing a portion of their food and replace it with the same portion of canned pumpkin. It is important to use fresh or the plain canned variety and not pumpkin pie filling (pumpkin pie filling contains sugars and spices).

CANDY WRAPPERS, such as tin foil and plastic, can get stuck in your pet’s digestive track and make them ill. BE CAREFUL ABOUT CANDLES AND LIGHTED JACK-O-LANTERNS. They can easily be knocked

over by a swinging dog’s tail or by a curious cat.

KEEP YOUR PETS INDOORS ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT. Animals are at risk for cruel treatment by Halloween pranksters. Spooked pets can get lost. Microchip and tag them in case they get out.
