H&S DESIGNTRENDS
From energy & resource use to designer thoughtfulness, there are several key components of sustainable design.
Sustainable design is a trend that has gained momentum in recent years, and it is expected to continue in 2024 Sustainable design involves creating spaces that are environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable This means considering the impact of design choices on the environment and using materials and resources that are renewable, recycled, or upcycled
In 2024, we can expect to see more sustainable design choices, including the use of natural and organic materials such as sustainable wood, bamboo, cork, and recycled glass. Designers will also focus on using eco- friendly textiles such as organic cotton and linen; low-VOC paints and reclaimed or repurposed furniture.
Overall, sustainable design is not only good for the environment it can also create beautiful and functional spaces that are healthy and comfortable to live in! By choosing sustainable design choices like these, we can create a better future for ourselves and future generations
Gorgeous colours are predicted to be a huge trend in interior design in 2023
Bold Colours Sustainable Design
If you're looking to make a statement in your interior design this year, we've got just the thing for you Bold colours are predicted to be a popular trend in interior design in 2024
These colours are bright, vibrant, and make a statement in any room. Some of the bold colours that are expected to be popular include deep blues, rich greens, bright yellows, and even hot pinks and oranges.
It's also important to consider the mood and atmosphere that different bold colours can create For example, deep blues and greens can create a calming and relaxing atmosphere, while bright yellows and oranges can add energy and excitement to a space. Designers will often use bold colours strategically to create the desired mood and atmosphere in a room.
Using bold colours in interior design can add a sense of playfulness, energy, and personality to a space However, it's important to use them in moderation and balance them with neutral colours and other design elements to avoid overwhelming the space

Old Meets New
It's the perfect time to embrace the old meets new trend! This trend is all about finding ways to blend vintage or antique pieces with modern styles and designs. In 2024, people are expected to continue to embrace this trend as a way of honouring the past and creating unique and eclectic living spaces
One way to incorporate vintage pieces into a modern home is to focus on statement pieces that can serve as focal points in a room This might include an antique dining table paired with modern chairs or a vintage chandelier paired with contemporary lighting fixtures. By focusing on a few key pieces, you can create a cohesive look that celebrates the beauty of the past while also embracing contemporary design
In some cases, vintage pieces can be repurposed or upcycled to fit in with a modern design aesthetic For example, an old wooden ladder might be repurposed as a bookshelf or a vintage suitcase might be transformed into a coffee table By giving new life to old objects, you can create unique and one-of-a-kind pieces that blend seamlessly with modern decor
Biophilic Design
Biophilic design is a trend that is focused on bringing elements of nature into the built environment. It is based on the idea that humans have an innate connection to nature, and that incorporating natural elements into our surroundings can have a positive impact on our physical and mental well-being.
Studies have shown that exposure to nature can reduce stress levels, improve mood, and boost cognitive function. By bringing elements of nature into our homes and workplaces, we can create spaces that promote mental and emotional well- being
Biophilic design can be incorporated into any type of space, from residential homes to commercial offices and public spaces Whether it's through the use of natural materials, indoor plants, or other design elements, biophilic design can help to create spaces that are not only beautiful and functional, but also promote health and well-being

Mixed Metals
Mixed metal decor is all about layering metal finishes.
The mixed metals trend in interior design involves the use of multiple metal finishes in a single space This can include finishes such as brass, copper, gold, silver, or even blackened steel Mixing metal finishes can add visual interest and texture to a room, and create a more dynamic and layered look.
One way to incorporate mixed metals into a space is through hardware and accessories. For example, a room might have a brass pendant light, a copper-framed mirror, and silver drawer handles on a dresser. Mixing metals in this way can help to create a cohesive yet eclectic look, and add depth and dimension to a room
Warm & Cozy Spaces
We're all about creating spaces that are inviting, comfortable, and welcoming These spaces are designed to make people feel at home with soft textures and warm colors that invite people to relax and unwind
One way to create a cozy space is through the use of textiles. Soft, plush fabrics like wool, faux fur, or velvet can add warmth and texture to a room. Pillows and throws in these materials can be added to couches, chairs, or beds to create a more inviting and cozy atmosphere
Another way to create a cozy space is through lighting Warm, soft lighting can help to create a relaxing ambiance in a room. This can be achieved through the use of table lamps, floor lamps, or even string lights. Dimmer switches can also be installed to allow for more flexibility in creating the right mood

H&S SMARTHOMES HOMES & STYLES INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE 11
There are several ways you can introduce smart technology features in your home in 2024
Smart bathrooms
Eco friendly solutions are gaining momentum and are set to be big this year
As the world becomes more conscious about how we use our natural resources, smart bathroom trends such as smart showers will be popular this year.
Features such as preset temperature controls and water flow, time and water are not wasted versus trying to figure the settings out manually
An additional feature of smart showers is the ability to turn your shower on and off using voice commands
Smart Kitchens
2024 is set to see kitchens becoming smarter Smart refrigerators have gained popularity amongst home owners They have an array of functions that include helping you stay organised with inbuilt calendars, entertainment and other organisation tools. One feature that stands out is how a smart fridge freezer can help you prepare recipes using the ingredients in your fridge
This is done by using its food management tool.
This tool can create shopping lists by checking what’s in your fridge using builtin cameras which show your fridge’s contents from different angles
Smart extra hoods are also trending this year. Ordinarily, extractor hoods filter food odours and water vapour out of the air while you cook.
Apart from looking better aesthetically, smart extractor hoods do more than just remove odours and control steam from your cooking A smart oven hood can interact with your cooker via WIFI and will automatically adjust its power to the rising steam An impressive safety feature is how they can detect gas and carbon monoxide fumes and automatically turn on to extract these from the room They do all this and more with less noise than their traditional counterparts.
Smart door locks
In an age where home security is paramount, technology has introduced several ways to keep our homes secure Smart door locks are a great option for your home as they allow you to secure your home remotely. Many of us have ourselves on a journey and start wondering if we locked our doors before leaving home Smart door locks save you from journeying back when you are miles away This is because your doors can be locked from anywhere with this device.. You simply jump onto an app and lock
your doors remotely The locking mechanism is the same as traditional locking systems meaning your security is not diminished This year adding biometric features to your smart lock has become a big trend These are a few ways of introducing smart technology into your home There are so many options out there. It comes down to finding the right smart home solutions for your needs.

MOLLY AND TICHAONA DAUTI & PHOTOGRAPHS VARIOUS EFFICIENT ENERGY MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS THROUGH SMART BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES.
The theme “What’s new?” in terms of building automation in the Zimbabwean context is difficult to speak on, since the basics have not yet been fully embraced. While one can admit that there has been some improvement in the last 5 years, there is still need for much more Most buildings in USA, UK, EME(A), etc. are equipped with state of the art building technologies, in most cases with KNX
normal in those parts of the world.Having attended the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) Event in Barcelona early this 2023, it is safe to say that the property development landscape in Zimbabwe needs to take greater strides towards building automation as a standard. Smart building technology is capable to do more tasks and execute things faster and easier compared to conventional methods From basics such as lighting and security, to the more luxurious audio-visual and other comfort systems, customers are more driven towards adding intelligence to all functions of their buildings. The growing demand for efficient energy being the standard. In the Zimbabwean space, it’s therefore imperative to get down to some basics first and find our way towards aligning to the standards that have become the new
H&S SMARTHOMES HOMES & STYLES INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE 13
management and increasing focus on coping with utility costs is driving the Building Automation industry to the next level While automation offers tremendous opportunities for systems integration, comfort and ease of use, efficient energy management is proving to be of greater demand, especially in a country where power cuts can easily go beyond 24 hours. It has been proven beyond doubt that smart building solutions can save up to 40% of energy in any building HVAC systems, lighting and water heating contribute the most towards energy consumption In the hospitality sector, hotels and other guest accommodations report high energy bills from air conditioners, lights and TVs that are left on by guests even after vacating their rooms In residences, many people forget to switch off heaters and lights in empty rooms or do not remember if they have switched them off or not
Then there is the issue of Phantom Energy Drain where, a variety of appliances drain a reasonable amount of power even when they are turned off The energy used from appliances that are plugged in, yet turned off, represents up to 10% of any monthly electricity bill. In the past, the only way to avoid this energy drain was to unplug appliances when they were not being used. A home automation system can undo the appliance “standby” modes, thereby appropriately and effectively bringing savings on monthly electricity bills
Smart lighting can assist to save power by the use of dimmable bulbs and presence detectors that allow lights to turn on/off automatically
Additionally, smart systems can be programmed with an ALL OFF button to turn off equipment that has been sub consciously left on even when not in use. Building automation and control functions allow
for efficient utilities and facilities management by promoting higher energy efficiency in buildings, which in turn saves operating costs, existing energy resources and reduce CO2 emissions. The technology even assists in gaining access to real-time monitoring of electricity, water, gas and other utility meters Also, access to real-time sub
metering data can emphasize clear inefficiencies in the building and help solve energy waste both on and off grid. Now getting back to the theme, ‘what’s new’ The answer is simple… Building automation is now a STANDARD H&S

layering different types of lighting in your kitchen, you boost not only its functionality, but also its level of warmth and comfort. 04 Kitchens are a design playground for those of us who love making decisions between selecting appliances, countertop materials, flooring, and cabinetry, there's already a lot to consider, but homeowners should make sure not to overlook kitchen lighting Choosing the right light fixtures can elevate your kitchen, turning it into an efficient workspace and social hub that you and your guests will want to spend more time in Below, we run through four kinds of lighting to consider H&S KITCHENSFEATURE HOMES & STYLES INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE 26
THERE
LIGHT:
TYPES OF
ILLUMINATION By
Ambient Lighting
Ambient or general lighting is the main source of light in your kitchen, and it usually comes in the form of ceiling or wallmounted fixtures, recessed lights, or track lights directed downwards Such fixtures should spread light evenly across a large floor area Ambient lights will help create a warm and inviting overall atmosphere in your kitchen Also consider adding dimmers so you can control the intensity of light for different occasions or as seasons change
Task Lighting
This type of lighting is focused on a specific area, usually your worktop, to ensure that you can safely and comfortably prepare meals It is also sometimes installed inside a pantry, so you can see what you have on hand for dinner Strip lights mounted underneath wall cabinets or cooker hoods, downlights in pantries or above an island counter, and large pendants above your worktop are good examples of task lighting When choosing task lights, make sure they don't cast shadows over your work areas Concealed LED strip lights are ideal, as they evenly illuminate most food preparation surfaces
Decorative Lighting
This type of lighting is the icing on the cake, and will help define the style or mood of your kitchen concept A decorative light in the form of a chandelier or pendant is often the statement piece that hangs above island counters in most open-concept kitchens When selecting a decorative suspension lamp, make sure it’s appropriate for the scale of your kitchen and height of your ceilings It's important that your decorative lamp does not dominate the space. Make sure the design and color of your lamp matches the overall concept of your kitchen, and that the bottom of the lamp is around 25 to 28 inches above your island top.
Accent Lighting
Used mainly to highlight particular sections or details in your kitchen, accent lights focus and draw attention to artwork, collectibles, or interesting architectural features within the kitchen Uplight sconces, wall-mounted fixtures, and track lights are some types of accent lights that can be used to add depth and dimension to kitchen nooks, or enhance the appearance of interesting backsplashes or cabinetry
