experienced trying times. Advertising revenues have declined, while competition from Internet media has challenged many print publishers. As an avid reader I was loathe to switch to a tablet, as I felt like a traitor. I love the weight, smell and feel of a book. I now admit to having a Kindle, only because it weighs less when travelling – it’s convenient. Convenience is what it’s all about these days. You can have access to more than 100 magazines with online subscriptions to sites like texture.ca. But just like books and newspapers, there’s nothing like actually opening the cover, unfolding the paper or flipping through a magazine – all of that is lost online. It’s akin to watching a movie on your phone. There’s no way you can fully appreciate the cinematography, sound engineering or special effects – you need the big screen and surround sound for the full experience. As with magazines, the photos jump out at you, and the glossy paper is tactile and pleasing to the eye. Creative people worked on writing and editing the copy, and photographers, production specialists and graphic designers all contributed to the layout. This is where I show my age, but as part of the demographic for magazines like Active Life, I believe this audience has a greater appreciation for how far we’ve come. One of my first jobs was with at a small printing house. Not only did I do the typesetting, but I also did the layouts using Letraset, an exacto knife and a waxer. Once approved, I operated a process camera to make the negative and then burned the plate for the printing press. If a line of waxed type slipped after I set it up on the camera, I had to redo it. When I was the advertising production manager for Sears Canada, we used couriers to go back and forth between our office and the typesetter’s. If we made a change, a courier had to be called again. There were times when a traffic jam delayed our printing schedule. Now, if I make a correction to the text, or suggest a colour or photo change, the art director sends the revised layout back to me by email within minutes. If I hadn’t lived through it, I could never have anticipated how the print world would evolve. The younger generation likes sound bites – a quick synopsis of a story. And in a way, that’s what magazines still offer. It’s a collaboration of specialists sharing pertinent information, along with accompanying photos that we can relate to. I like nothing more than to leaf through a magazine, no matter where I am. It’s enjoyable entertainment – and people read the ads. As with most progressive companies, HOMES Publishing Group is changing with the technological times, and has expanded their online presence with MyHomePage.ca. You can read all of our publications there, or you can contact our office and we’ll mail you a free hard copy – because there’s nothing like the real thing – and you can share it with a friend.

BLYTHWOOD HOMES: Niagara Region’s Most Meticulous Homebuilder There’s a good reason why Blythwood Homes’ building sites sell out so fast: It’s because smart people know good quality and understand the logic of moving to one of Canada’s most livable areas.

QUALITY

Few builders offer the quality that’s included in every Blythwood Home. If you compare Blythwood’s standards to those of other builders you’ll realize they are above and beyond many other builders’ upgrades.

LOCATION

It’s always been said that real estate is all about location. No one says this better than Blythwood Homes, as they build exclusively in Niagara Region’s most desirable locations.

VALUE

Best of all, is the exceptional value inherent to Blythwood Homes. Comparable homes in the GTA would easily run into seven figures and wouldn’t be as well constructed.

WOMEN NEED TO

save more

BY RUBINA AHMED-HAQ

Gender gap prevalent when it comes to retirement

Almost half of working women are worried about outliving their money.

DISPROPORTIONATE

The Retirement Gender Gap, published by TIAA, found that in order for women to reach parity, they would need to save 18 per cent of their annual income if they were making $100,000.00 per year, as opposed to men who were recommended to save 10 per cent of the same salary.

WOMEN LIVE LONGER

In Canada, women outlive men by approximately four years. Added to this, women often marry a man around the same age or a few years older, which means that a woman will most likely be on her own for part of her retired life. This can be a financially challenging time, as any pension that a partner was receiving will stop, or be reduced. Health care costs go up as we age, so the price of living gets more expensive.

WOMEN TAKE MORE TIME AWAY

The TIAA survey points out that most company, and government, strategies assume that a person will be in the workforce for 40 years. But this figure is not accurate when it comes to women, who spend, on average, 29 years in the workforce. Women generally take more time off to raise children and take care of aging parents, which means that women are dealing with a smaller income to average out over their lifetime.

EARNING POWER

While Iceland recently announced that they will eliminate the gender pay gap, this isn’t so across the board – yet. Women tend to earn less, which reduces their ability to save. According to the latest numbers form Statistics Canada, in 2015 women were paid 87 cents for every dollar a man earned in the same job. Women also bear the burden of unpaid work. According to a report Making Women Count by OXFAM Canada and the Centre for Policy Alternatives, women do up to six hours of unpaid work per day, as compared to men who do as little as 30 minutes – resulting in women having less time to participate in the paid economy, or focus on education to advance their careers.

SAVE MORE

If an 18 per cent target is hard to reach, it’s still important to make a retirement plan a priority. When it comes to making investment decisions, women can be more aggressive in the types of products that they choose. If in a relationship, women need to ensure that their partner has an adequate life insurance policy. These types of conversations aren’t easy, but very important. It’s impossible to anticipate how life will play out, but with the high cost of living, women need to save more. n

omen haven’t always made saving for retirement a priority. It’s often difficult to even think about it when you’re entrenched in the costs of raising kids and paying a mortgage, along with the expenses of everyday life. Eking out a family holiday often rates higher on the priority scale than an RRSP contribution. New research shows that women should be saving almost twice as much as men for their retirement. A survey by a leading U.S.-based retirement services provider TIAA (Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association), says that gender-neutral advice, when it comes to retirement, isn’t accurate. Franklin Templeton published a survey called the Investments’ Retirement Income Strategies and Expectations (RISE), which points out that almost half of working women are worried about outliving their money.

LIVE THE GOOD LIFE IN PICTON Picton is the social and economic hub of Prince Edward County, a landscape dotted with Gothic farmhouses, small wineries, microbreweries, antique shops, windswept beaches and the sparkling waters of the Bay of Quinte. This vibrant community of almost 5,000 in southeastern Ontario is increasingly popular with summer tourists, a growing number of artisans and mature adults, who are keen on new adventures and unique experiences only found in Prince Edward County. Leading American publishing giant Conde Nast and Canada’s Maclean’s magazine have designated Picton as a top place to retire, comparing Prince Edward County to an uncomplicated California in the ‘70s, where good food, wine and the arts meet. Rosemary Dunsmore R

osemary Dunsmore, award-winning actress of stage, film and the small screen, was frazzled and stressed out when I met up with her. After living in her funky Rose Cottage that overlooks a beautiful, forested ravine for the past 27 years, Dunsmore was on the move – literally and figuratively. Initially, when she made the decision to sell her home, a range of emotions, which involved her self-worth and self-esteem, all seemed to be tied up in the very thing that she was separating from.

[COVER STORY]

With her father, Bob, in Montserrat (where he has a house) in 2012. Bob is now 97.

“Selling the house was a hasty decision,” says Dunsmore. “I made the decision and then was quite frightened. My identity was wrapped up in this house – it was my personal sense of cool. I brought up my son, Rob, now 23, in this house. And I have been through two marriages here as well.” Once Dunsmore recognized that her angst was separation anxiety, she was able to embrace the act of cleansing and decluttering – a ritual that she likens to ageing, as well as to the anticipation of the next chapter. “Every time I get rid of a load, I feel lighter – not so bound to my stuff. I remembered that old adage, do you possess your possessions or do they possess you?”

Character Development

For many actors, especially women, finding decent parts are harder to come by. In fact, there was a period of about six years when Dunsmore, who is now 64, felt sidelined – that her acting career was over. The 40s and 50s didn’t rattle her so much, but turning 60 did. “It was a wakeup call – 60 sounded so old,” says Dunsmore. “I couldn’t relate to it. But, it also focused me – made me think about doing things in the now. It became liberating. My whole paradigm of thinking shifted. There was a bit of a slump after turning 60, but since then my life has been fantastic.”

Dunsmore says that Newton’s prediction was bang on. She was never the wounded deer who needed to be helped. She inherently wanted more depth and complexity to the roles that she performed. “Acting is an inside/out job,” says Dunsmore. “In developing a character, I concern myself with what they see. And with a bigger push to tell women’s stories, roles for women are getting incrementally better. There are certainly more women writing stories and more women directors.”

The Role of Aging

Having fun with her son, Rob, on a trip to Galapagos in 2008.

Acting roles have been moving along an innovative clip for Dunsmore over the past few years. She currently plays a recurring role in the Canadian science fiction television series, Orphan Black. For the very first time, Dunsmore took on a singing role in the Stratford Festival’s 2016 adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical, A Little Night Music. “I had to go on stage every night holding my fear in my hand,” says Dunsmore. “I was terrified. For the first five months I just learned bad habits, but, from there on in, I learned how to sing. I was thrilled with the opportunity and also the fact that I was able to do it – not just at some small theatre, but at the Stratford Festival.” Dunsmore loves working in films and television, but her favourite discipline is live theatre. She admits that she’s noticed a change in the process of learning her lines now that she’s in her sixth decade. “I learn them quickly and they are gone just as quickly,” says Dunsmore. “They don’t seem to stick.” The physicality around acting has not been a problem in the least for Dunsmore, who insists on performing her own energetic stunts. “In the Stratford show I did this past summer (2016), The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, I was jumping around a lot with one of my students from theatre school. A lot of the young people [actors] came up to me and asked if I had a

Dunsmore, who has been acting since the age of 21, describes herself as a Pollyanna, and admits to being a fan of Pippi Lonstocking. She identifies most with characters who change during the course of the story, and whose moral compasses are challenged. At a young age, Dunsmore auditioned for the Stratford Festival’s then-artistic director, Christopher Newton, who said to her, ‘You are the sort of actress who won’t start working until you are 28.”

particular exercise regime.” says Dunsmore with a delighted laugh. “They kind of marvelled at me. I was not what they thought an actor of my age should be acting like. I was enlivened by that. It felt fantastic. Here I am 45 years later and I can still do all this stuff. Bring it on.”

Moving Forward

Photography, courtesy of Rosemary Dunsmore

On a personal level, Dunsmore found that the maternal letting go of her son into adulthood a difficult rite of passage. During this transition, Dunsmore had some great acting roles, including one where she played a distraught mother of a distressed young man. “These are great parts, because they are born of enormous love – the love of a mother for a son,” says Dunsmore. “They [the roles] are full of the bewilderment and helplessness around your child approaching young adulthood, and, as a parent, not having any power anymore.” Along with her yearly getaway to the family home in Montserrat, Dunsmore enjoys cooking and dinner parties. Meditation, yoga, walking and a consistent exercise routine are all wellness practices that she is committed to. Meditation, in particular, provides Dunsmore with the spiritual opportunity to create, and to, ultimately, observe the gap between her thoughts and her feelings. “I am not as concerned about consequences. I feel lighter,” says Dunsmore. “I try to turn everything into an opportunity, rather than stressing about why things are happening as they are. It’s a grand adventure, and I have been extremely fortunate to be able to pursue curiosity.

As the great 6th Century B.C. philosopher, Lao Tzu, says, “You have to give up who you are in order to find out who you can be.”’ In 2017, Dunsmore is performing in the Stratford Festival’s adaptation of Bakkhai, as well as playing Mme Pernelle in the dark comedy, Tartuffe. She is the recipient of a bevy of prestigious acting awards, including an Actra (2009) for Best Actress in The Baby Formula; a Dora nominee for Single, Straight Ahead, Blind Dancers, as well as Tom At The Farm; Best Performer at the Edinburgh Fringe, London Daily Telegraph; Private Lives to Fallen Angels; The Glass Menagerie; and The Beauty Queen of Leenane; a Masque Award for her interpretation feminine performance in WIT; and a MECCA award for Best Actress in Glorious! (Montreal). In her television roles she’s received an Earl Grey Award for Best Performance in a Leading Role, as well as four Gemini nominations, and has appeared in many television series including Anne of Green Gables – the Sequel; Mom P.I.; and Murdoch Mysteries. “I look at things as opportunities,” says Dunsmore. “If I don’t like a situation, I look to see how I can change it. I find a person gets what they expect. It is very easy to fall into the victim role, particularly as an actor, which, in turn, makes you powerless.” n Since this interview, Dunsmore has bought a house in Stratford, Ontario. She hadn’t been in a rush to purchase, but five days after she connected with a real estate agent, she was made aware of a rare Ontario cottage on a nice property. “I drove up the next morning and bought it on the spot,” says Dunsmore. “I’m really excited – time for a change.” ACTIVE LIFE

Online shopping

without using credit card numbers

hen you hear stories about Home Depot, Target, Marshalls and more recently, a hotel chain in Texas being hacked and credit card numbers compromised, it’s easy to understand. There’s good news in the online shopping world. Many payment processors and service providers are offering more payment alternatives by simply using a third-party User ID and password each time that you check out. You’re still using your favourite credit card and you are still collecting those valuable reward points, but you’ll never have to enter, or reveal, your number, expiry date or security code to them. Instead of an identifiable card number, a token or a one-time transaction code is used to transfer payment information, which is totally useless to hackers, and far more secure. There’s no fee to use these services. Initially, you’d setup an account and create a username or ID, and a password. You’ll likely have to enter your card information once, along with a shipping address, and then validate your account via email or text. PayPal (PayPal.ca) is one service provider that’s been around since 1998, and they were once owned by eBay. PayPal is accepted at places like

24

Alternative payment methods use a third-party User ID and password each time that you check out. Best Buy, Cineplex, Ikea, Kijiji and a donation site called CanadaHelps. org. Upon checkout, you’re directed back to your PayPal account where you discreetly pay using your preregistered Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express (AMEX) card. PayPal can also be used via mobile app.

Visa Checkout (Visacheckout.ca) has been available in Canada since 2014. The beauty of this service is that it’s not limited to VISA. You can also register and pay with your MasterCard, AMEX, Visa Debit and select gift cards. Simply select Visa Checkout at checkout, and it will also automatically populate your shipping address. A new Canadian starter is Apple Pay, which allows you to make secure purchases online with your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and select Macs. It works a little differently. Using your Apple ID, instead of an account, you can securely add your debit and credit cards from most major Canadian financial institutions and AMEX to a Wallet App. To authorize, you can even use the iPhone’s fingerprint sensor or the side button on your Apple Watch. ApplePay can also be used wirelessly at select retailers at point-ofsale. You don’t need to retrieve you credit card. You simply hold your smartphone or Apple Watch near the reader. Google and Samsung have come out with new products as well. The beauty of alternative payment methods is that it’s quick and it’s free. Changing your user ID and password is easily done. In the event that an online merchant does get compromised, all they’ll get is useless information. n Greg Gazin (a.k.a The Gadget Guy and Gadget Greg) is a syndicated tech columnist, blogger, podcaster (host and producer), speaker and author. You can shop anywhere, for just about anything, online or with your smartphone – even for groceries. It’s convenient. For some, it’s part of their daily routine. While others might prefer physical shopping, there are those who are hesitant, or even fearful, as it relates to their vulnerabilty when entering their credit card numbers online.

Live with Ease Home adjustments for barrier-free living BY JAYNE HOBBS

HOME SAFETY TIPS

Each of us has unique needs as it relates to barrier-free living. Accessibility and safety are the main concerns as we age. Our mobility is often affected, making us more prone to falling. As we enter our elder chapter of life, its often difficult to speculate future needs. If renovating and redesigning your existing home, or purchasing a new home for your retirement, factor in these safety tips. ◆ DECLUTTER: Remove items that

may cause falls, such as scatter rugs, electric cords, bedspreads that may drag on the floor (many falls occur

26

P26barrier.indd 26

ACTIVE LIFE

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 7

by tripping on bedding in the middle of the night), as well as items on the stairs, stacks of paper and anything that impedes you from moving around safely. ◆ LIGHTING: Luminous lighting

should be placed evenly throughout the house. Include night lights or motion detector lighting in halls, stairways, bathrooms and poorly lit areas.

◆ FLOORS: Use only slip-resistant

throw rugs and bathmats, and avoid high-shine, slippery flooring.

◆ STAIRS: Consider placing a hand

rail on both sides of the stairs, as well as a secure runner if the stairs are slippery. Again, remove any clutter, and when necessary, install an electric lift. ◆ DOORS: Change doorknobs to

lever handles, and use pull-outs on cabinets for easier access.

◆ GRAB BARS: These are one of the

most useful, and safety conscious, items that you can install. Ideal for bathtubs, showers and beside the toilet, they can also be installed anywhere in the house where extra support is needed.

◆ COUNTERTOPS AND CABINETS: In both the kitchen and bathroom, keep them tidy and only have necessary items within reach. Consider pull-out shelving and adjustable countertops. ◆ FAUCETS: Touch faucets are fairly new on the market, and are definitely worth investing in.

◆ BATHROOMS: Walk-in tubs

and showers that include seating are highly recommended. Other considerations include, higher toilets or raised safety seats that help with aging knees, as well as slip-resistant flooring, and re-setting the water to a lower temperature in order to prevent scalding.

◆ ACCESSIBILITY: Transitions from

one flooring surface to another should be level, as well as all walkways for easy access. It might be necessary to install a ramp or railings where you enter your home. Likewise, widening door openings may be a future requirement. Inside your home, everything you need on a regular basis should be easily accessible. Use a mobile phone, and ensure that all important numbers have been programmed in. These helpful suggestions can be adapted to your existing home environment to help prevent accidents – making aging-in-place a realistic reality. n

n a definition from Medical-Dictionary. TheFreeDictionary.com – barrier-free refers to structural or architectural design that does not impede use by individuals with special needs. Currently, there are more than four million Canadians living with disabilities. Aging is one of the biggest contributors – and as the boomer generation ages, this figure is expected to snowball. It’s increasingly important to adapt our living space in a barrier-free manner. An annual physical will keep us in tune to our body’s requirements – both physically and mentally. Being aware of changing needs will help us to stay safe, and reduce the risk of falls. Often the self-imposed barriers that we put on ourselves can be can be improved. With adaptations to our homes, we can enjoy our retirement in an environment that’s conducive to our changing needs.

A Healthy PLEASURE Stay fit while travelling BY AGNES RAMSAY

FIND SOLUTIONS

I’m a big fan of travelling, but it can wreak havoc on your daily fitness routine. If you are traveling for pleasure, try to build your holiday around activities. For the more active, this may include hiking excursions, or simply walking around the cities that you’re visiting. Exploring different cultures is always best on foot. I’m never concerned when my clients go on this type of vacation as they don’t need to make an additional effort to exercise – it’s built into the trip by seeing the sights. Pack your pedometer of choice and delight in all the steps that you’re taking. Make sure that you pack good walking shoes – heels are never your friend on cobblestone streets. And don’t forget the walking poles. If you are going south for a muchneeded R&R holiday, ensure that

28

P28fitness.indd 28

ACTIVE LIFE

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 7

walking becomes part of your daily routine. Get up early for a brisk walk on the beach before it gets too hot. Don’t forget to take a bottle of water, and wear a hat and sunblock. Most resorts offer other activities like kayaking, beach volleyball and swimming. And many are so large that simply walking everywhere will give you a daily workout. Personally, I tend to avoid the gyms when travelling south, because I’d prefer to be outdoors. However, if the heat is a concern, a short gym visit is a great option – you are on holidays, after all.

PLAN A HITT

When on business, HIIT training is highly recommended. Time is often at a premium, and you may not be booked into a hotel with a gym. Nor may you be in an area that’s conducive to walking. HIIT training can be done in your room.

HIIT TRAINING ◆ Two- to three-minute warm up

(light jogging on the spot).

◆ High intensity activity for 20

seconds, then stepping on the spot for 40 seconds. Repeat circuit four to eight times.

◆ Two- to three-minute cool down

(stepping on the spot).

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is another possibilty. Dr. Martin Gibala, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University, has done many studies on HIIT. She’s found that short bursts of high intensity exercise, followed by periods of moderate intensity, is remarkably effective – 10 to 15 minutes is enough.

HIGH INTENSITY ACTIVITIES* ◆ Jumping jacks ◆ Mountain climbers ◆ Squat jumps ◆ Running man ◆ Spider man ◆ Burpees ◆ Reverse lunges ◆ High knee raise

irtual Reality Technology is very realistic. I was amazed by its capabilities as it looked, and felt, like I was wandering around a beautiful vineyard in France. However, as good as the technology is, it still isn’t anywhere close to the real deal. Even when interacting with business colleagues, nothing, yet, has truly replaced real face time. And while the virtual vineyard looked lovely, I’d prefer to actually experience it, so that all my senses are stimulated.

SOUTHWEST

Florida

L

ee County, on the southwest coast of Florida, offers up fabulous, island-time beach options. Seminole natives and marauding pirates inhabited this rugged area when Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821. Settlers moved in to the area to farm, log and cattle ranch. Wars with the Seminoles ensued and Fort Myers, currently the county centre, was built. Although this area is now populated with several adjoining cities, it’s far more laid-back than Miami and south Florida. With an abundance of nature experiences,

30

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 7

museums, golf courses and shopping opportunities, there’s no shortage of things to do, but make sure you take the time to enjoy the beaches.

Sanibel Island

Located across a long causeway just west of Fort Myers, Sanibel Island is ranked one of the top 10 best places to escape the snow by USA Today. It’s easy to see why with its white sand beaches, an annual average temperature of 24C and worldclass fishing. With just one main thorough-fare, traffic can get busy, but the 40 kilometres of bike paths,

which run the length of the island, offer up a more-relaxed alternative in order to appreciate the scenery. Eco-tourism is strong here due to the 6,354-acre J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which covers about 70 per cent of Sanibel. The refuge is home to 220 species of birds, more than 50 types of reptiles (including the Florida-famous ‘gator), and 32 different kinds of mammals – so bring your binoculars. Tram tours are available, or you can hike, bike or drive the trails on your own. Just down the road from the refuge is Tarpon Bay Explorers,

TRAVEL TIPS:

• Take a direct flight from Toronto

to Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers and rent a car with a GPS. • Stay at one of the Inns (I stayed at the quaint Captiva Island Inn), a resort, or a vacation rental. • Travel during shoulder seasons (fall or spring) for quieter beaches and better rates. FortMyersSanibel.com

where a knowledgeable naturalist will take you on a guided kayak tour through the mangrove forest. On the Commodore Creek Trail, you’ll see an abundance of marine crabs and birds trying to catch them.

on the menu. Try the scallop and pork belly appie (voted best on the Island). Or for an island-style taste explosion, try the fluffy, moist black grouper.

Captiva Island

Here, the word shelling is a verb. Because of the location on a continental shelf, in addition to the unusual east-west orientation of many of the beaches, the current sweeps in from the Caribbean, carrying with it copious amounts of shells. In order to avoid crushing these beauties, one has to watch where they’re stepping. For collectors, it’s a shell-lover’s paradise with more than 400 varieties. Pick up a shelling brochure to identify your treasures, or you can learn more at the BaileyMatthews National Shell Museum – the only one in the United States. For ideal shelling conditions, it’s recommended to take a charter tour, like the one Captiva Cruises offers to the boat-access only state park beach,

Captiva is attached to Sanibel via a bridge, and is smaller in size. This island is so narrow in places that you can see water on both sides of the road. Similar to Sanibel, there are miles of beautiful beaches, but it’s also populated with houses (more like mansions), inns and vacation rentals. Captiva is very laid back, and as one islander said, “Nine p.m. is midnight on Sanibel and Captiva Islands.” Visit YOLO (You Only Live Once) Watersports to rent stand-up paddle boards, arrange a parasail or waverunner excursion, or to rent a golf cart (you can drive them on the road) or bicycle.

Island Flavours

Shelling

Cayo Costa Island. Before you board at the dock, check for manatees – the large, gentle, sea-cow creatures who like to hang out there. On the cruise, you’ll likely see dolphins, as well as a wide variety of birds.

Fort Myers Beach

If the islands get too quiet for you, head back over the causeway to Fort Myers Beach. Here there’s a busy, beach-town vibe with surf shops, bars, clubs and resorts. The soft, white sand is like walking on baby powder. Whichever beach you find yourself on at the end of the day in Southwest Florida, take the time to enjoy the spectacular sunset – after all, you’re on island time. n Kate Robertson can be contacted at kateflyingsolo@gmail.com, instagram. com/kateflysolo101, or twitter.com/ kateflyingsolo.

It’s easy to get a room with a kitchenette on the islands, so you can make yourself at home. However, if you’d rather not fend for yourself, there’s no need to worry about dining options. Many have a quirky bent, like the Bubble Room, with its emporium of antiques and bubble fun. Or try Doc Ford’s (named after the fictional character in co-owner Randy Wayne White’s crime novels), with an outdoor patio, live music and flights of rum tastings. There’s elegant, high-end dining as well, including the award-winning Thistle Lodge Beachfront Restaurant. Fish and seafood options are always ACTIVE LIFE

because there’s no need to be tied down to a second property in terms of maintenance, but also because of the amenities that tend to go with them, which you just wouldn’t get in any other situation. or a true Canadian connection, Muskoka embraces all the elements that we’ve come to associate with the natural beauty of this country – pristine lakes, hardwood forests and glorious sunsets. As I drive north, there’s a point when the landscape changes, and so does my mood and my attitude. I feel more relaxed, and (as cliche as it sounds) at one with nature. I had the pleasure of staying at JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa last summer. It was a breath of fresh air after the stifling heat of Toronto. Ranked number seven on the top 20 list of resorts in Canada by Conde Nast, this property is perched on a granite bluff overlooking Lake Rosseau. It really doesn’t get more spectacular than this. Similar to The Hamptons, Muskoka is a revered destination and the prices of owning there have come to reflect this. Cottage country isn’t what it used to be, but a variety of alternative shared ownership options are becoming popular. Not only

Macaulay House

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY BY CECE M. SCOTT

Historical Reflections

Prince Edward County was founded by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe in 1792, and was named ather the fourth son of King George III – Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent. Visitors can connect with The County’s historical roots by visiting one of several museums in the area. The Wellington Heritage Museum is a Quaker Meeting House that dates back to 1885. The Quakers played a key role in the County’s development. Due to the temperate climate of The County,

growing produce has always been a key ingredient to the area. At one time there were 75 canning factories in PEC, which is highlighted in the Douglas A. Crawford Collection. The Rose House Museum, dating to the early 1800s, was settled by several generations of the Rose family, who were amongst the first Marysburgh settlers. Ameliasburgh Heritage Village dates back to 1868, and showcases a museum, a log cabin, an operational blacksmith shop, a sap shanty, a dairy and beekeeping buildings, along with the Goldie Corliss 18 foot flywheel

rince Edward County is rich in artistic expression, pioneer museums, outdoor activities and gastronomic delights. An easy two hour drive from Toronto, this area includes the communities of Picton, Bloomfield and Wellington. Affectionately referred to as The County, there’s a definite atmosphere that distinguishes it from other destinations. This all-encompassing island offers up a host of experiences, including hiking, cycling, wine touring (and tasting), camping, boating, museums and culinary dining adventures.

A Birder’s Paradise

Point Petre Wildlife Conservation Area is known to birders as one of Canada’s best birding sight areas. It’s an important stopover for black ducks, wood ducks, lesser and greater scaups, blue and green-winged teals, hooded mergansers, and buffleheads. It’s also a great area for picnics, swimming and watching the sun set. The Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory, (PEPtBO), is a bird migration station that bands up to 15,000 birds of more than 120 species each year. The Observatory is open to visitors during the the spring and fall. Bird House City encompasses

Culinary Arts

The County is garnering a highly respected reputation for their awardwinning vineyards, as well as craft beers and ciders. It’s the fastest growing wine region in Ontario, with close to 40 wineries, including Hillier Creek Estates & Winery, Waupoos Estates Winery and Sandbanks Estate Winery. To complement your wine tasting, check out Picton’s Great Canadian Cheese Festival, (TGCCF). On June 3rd and 4th, you can taste test more than 150 varieties of milk cheeses from cows, sheeps, goats and water buffalos, in addition to artisan food products. For a gastronomic treat, plan to attend one of Jamie Kennedy’s Saturday evening Dinner Series, which run from May 20th to October 7th, on his farm in Hillier. Kennedy, of JK Wine Bar, JK ROM, and Gilead Café + Wine Bar fame, offers up a feast of organic delights, sparkling wine and canapes in his rustic, renovated barn. Be sure to check out the cover story on Jamie Kennedy in the July/August issue of Active Life.

Creative Pursuits

After an afternoon of imbibing, get some exercise on one of the many trails in The County. The 49-kilometre Millennium Trail starts in Carrying Place and winds throughout The County to Picton. Quinte Conservation Trails meander through the parks within the Quinte Conservation areas. For a fun evening, check out the Regent Theatre, an intact Edwardian opera house that features free family movies on the last Sunday of each month. Prince Edward County is a creative hotspot for artists of varied genres, including painters, textile artists, potters, jewelers, fashion and glass artisans. Visitors flock to the The Arts Trail, the PEC Studio Tour and the Barn Quilt Tour. n

Reverend William Macaulay was the son of a United Empire Loyalist, who donated most of the land for the town that he personally named Picton. As part of Macaulay Heritage Park, you can visit the Macaulay House that was built in 1830, as well as the Heritage Garden and the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, which is now a museum. The Mariners Park Museum features a unique collection of treasures salvaged from the shipwrecks that the roiling waters surrounding Prince Edward County fostered.

[DESTINATION ONTARIO] Nature lovers’ havens

The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre, located on 3,000 acres of wetlands and forest, is a trumpeter swan sanctuary. A hot-spot connection for nature lovers, visitors can take advantage of the observation tower to decide on the best route for their hiking, biking or cross country skiing adventure. In September, the marsh’s Get Outdoors Festival is a great way to celebrate all things indigenous that this nature reserve has to offer. Awenda Provincial Park is a spectacular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering camping, biking, canoeing and swimming. Sunbathers flock to the sandy Georgian Bay shores and beaches during the summer months. Consisting of 63 small islands, Georgian Bay Islands National Park also has camping and cabin rental availability. With more than 230 kilometres of trails, cyclists of all abilities can enjoy the beautiful paths that run along the

bay’s coastine. The routes are jampacked with historical highlights, as well as cycle-friendly support businesses, such as eateries, cosy accommodations and bike shops. This water corridor is celebrated for its sparkling azure qualities, and is the Gateway to the 30,000 Islands – an outsized boaters’ paradise. There are multiple anchorages for boaters, and a good selection of places to gas-up and stock up on supplies. One of the many jewels in the chain, Beckwith Island is an Ojibwa reserve that allows boaters to spend the day on the beach or tour the dunes. Overnight camping is available with prior permission.

Cultural cravings

You can get your live performance fix at two of the area’s arts venues, King’s Wharf Theatre in Penetanguishene and the Midland Cultural Centre. King’s Wharf Theatre, an intimate 385-seat venue, is situated at the end of a long, water-kissed boardwalk. This year’s playbill includes the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope musical, the Million Dollar Quartet, and the ever-popular Joseph and the Technicolor

Dreamcoat. Intermission at any of these performances can be enjoyed by sipping a cold libation or savouring a sweet treat while taking in the sights of Discovery Harbour’s replica ships, as well as the spendour of Georgian Bay. The Midland Cultural Centre celebrates the arts with classical, folk, country and bluegrass concerts, in addition to live theatre and literary events by well-known authors.

Stroll the streets

Shopping in the area is an eclectic, small-town experience offering up everything from fashion to furniture. A stroll along Midland’s downtown King Street affords views of the bay as you make your way from store to store. A well-worth-thewalk excursion should include the outdoor gallery of murals (North America’s longest historic outdoor mural), painted along the sides of buildings in the downtown/ waterfront area. Inspired by the murals of Chemanius, B. C., the outdoor gallery of 35 murals depicts the poignant pioneer history of the area.

The Queen of Tarts

Celebrating all things butter tarts, Midland is home to Ontario’s Best Butter Tarts Festival. In 2016, the festival attracted 50,000 visitors and sold more than 127,000 tarts. This year’s festival takes place on June 10th. Arriving early is the key to grabbing a dozen – or maybe three. n

HYGGE Danish decorating philosophy BY TANIA RICHARDSON

R

oughly translated, hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is a Danish concept that means cosiness. The word is used to acknowledge a feeling or a moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or not, ordinary or extraordinary, as cosy, charming or special.

Incorporating the hygge construct into our homes encourages us to relax, and to feel as at-home as possible. 44

Think of it like a hug, which will also help you to remember how to pronounce it. The term was derived from a Norwegian word that means wellbeing. Everywhere we look these days, we are being presented with the construct of Hygge, and many of us have already been doing it, without really knowing it. We could also substitute the word cosy for hygge. Denmark is known as one of the happiest countries in the world, and with 17 hours of darkness per day in the winter, people spend more time indoors and put a greater focus on home and entertaining. But hygge isn’t a winter-only

speak to you. Incorporate an escapism space so that you can unplug from technology. This could be an intimate reading nook, a place to mediate, listen to music – or a space just to be. There’s also an element of minimalism to hygge. Declutter your home and get rid of unnecessary stuff. It’s one of the easiest ways to free yourself from feeling overwhelmed. You’ll be more relaxed in an environment that’s just the way you want it to be. concept. Restaurants are exporting the concept of hygge with intimate settings and a lack of uniformity in decor, while concentrating on comforting food. Not all patrons may realize it, but they certainly get a sense of it.

COSY SPACES

Incorporating the hygge construct into our homes encourages us to relax, and to feel as at-home as possible. One hygge specialist suggests that it works best when there’s not too much space around a person or people, so use every nook and cranny for optimum design functionality. Inviting window seats with plush, down-filled seating and lots of cushions for curling up in is a great use of space. It’s all about sumptuous textiles that are soft and cosy, yet luxurious and sophisticated. Of course, kitchens are the place where family and friends congregate. Here you can add plush seating and incorporate cosy gathering retreats. Not only do you want efficient prep

areas, but you want kitchen layouts that promote good cooking and good conversation. In the bathroom, heated floors and towel bars are sumptuous additions, as are oversized tubs for two. In the bedroom, consider soft colours, low levels of lighting, as well as luxurious linens and down duvets.

CONTENTMENT

Hygge is about creating an atmosphere that’s comfortable and inviting. Install dimmers on lights so that you can set them to appealing levels, and augment with candles. Surround yourself with colours that you love – colours that feel familiar and comforting to you. It’s not about material items, but ways to make use of what you have, and to embrace the most important elements in your life. To make a happier home, be true to the way that you and your family want to live. Design your home around your lifestyle, and avoid getting caught up in the latest trends. Decorate with art and furniture that

BE PRESENT

The concept of Hygge extends beyond the home as well. Take the time to get outside, ride your bike, go for a walk and have a picnic. Create a welcoming spot outdoors where you can let you mind, and body, be still. I work hard during the day, and when I come home, I want to be able to stop and drop anywhere that my heart desires. I like to wrap myself in a soft cashmere blanket in my cosy club chair next to the fireplace, with my favourite coffee mug and slippers. There’s an adjectival form of hygge – hyggeligt is a word offered as a compliment to the host after a pleasant evening at their home. Perhaps the rest of the world is slowly waking up to what the Danes have been wise to for generations – that having a relaxed, cosy time with friends and family, along with good food and drink, is also good for the soul. n Tania Richardson is CEO and Co-founder of Tomas Pearce Interior Design Consulting Inc. Condo-living storage solutions BY JANE LOCKHART

STORED AWAY

A condo-sized home often correlates with living with less. Whether you’ve downsized from a large household to a smaller space, or like me, you just prefer the maintenance-free condo

46

ACTIVE LIFE

P46-47lockhart.indd 46

lifestyle, it can take some creative solutions to make room for all of your stuff. I’m a big fan of built-in cabinets, as these pieces offer the most versatility. I know a couple who looked at the plans for their condo unit during construction and realized that there just wasn’t enough storage. Their solution was to line an entire wall,

floor-to-ceiling, with custom-made cabinetry. They chose flat panels with no visible hardware so that it resembled a regular panelled wall. Drawers are an easy way to access stored objects, because you can see everything at once when opened. Remember that the inside of each door offers more valuable surface

C

ondo living is a great option, especially if you’re always on the go. It’s convenient for homeowners who want a turnkey, hassle-free lifestyle. If you have the travel bug, there’s nothing like turning the key and not having to worry about outside maintenance, and the like, while you’re away. However, condo life can have its draw-backs when you are at home, and living with the baggage of everyday life. And when I say baggage, I don’t just mean the travelling kind.

ORGANIZATION IS THE KEY

space where you can incorporate hooks for long jewelry storage, keys, bulletin boards or a mirror. In fact, hooks are a great addition throughout your home. You’ll gain more towel storage in the bathroom, and extend your closet space for coats, clothing, keys, a dog leash, etc. Many buildings are touting architectural details like high ceilings, so be sure to take cabinets as high as possible to provide compartments for infrequently used items like wrapping paper, seasonal decorations, linen, dishware, etc. For higher cabinets, instal flip-up doors, rather than those with side hinges, for easier accessibility.

Photography, courtesy of Panasonic

NEW & IMPROVED

Not to take away from the alwayshandy step stool, but new ideas are always being introduced, like pull-down clothing racks. Japanese appliance and home goods manufacturer, Panasonic, offers an entire line of unique space-saving products. They’ve introduced a soft pull-down shelf system that brings everyday items to you. With a simple pull, the entire shelf lowers. They’ve also created a mechanized rotating system for hanging clothes – similar to what you would see at the dry cleaners. You can store, view and remove clothes with little effort, and it’s designed for narrow, deep, oftenwasted spaces. Adding a pullout or pull-down shelving to deep cabinets, as well as turntables to upper cabinets,

and pull-down, ceiling-mounted laundry drying racks that tuck away when not in use, all help to simplify life’s storage dilemmas.

DOUBLE DUTY

A Murphy-style bed can be customdesigned to fit with your decorating style, and to include added storage space built around it. Built-in storage drawers, or rolling boxes that fit snugly underneath, are included on select bed designs. The bottom cushions of some sofas lift to hold storage within the base frame. Convert the den in the classic ‘one-bedroom plus den floorplan’ into a walk-in closet or an office, and add more floor-to-ceiling storage.

“ When we clear the

physical clutter from our lives, we make room for inspiration to enter. ”

– JANE LOCKHART

However, I do need to add a caveat – make sure that it’s attractive, as well as functional. You don’t want to look like you live in a warehouse. I love my condo and all the benefits that go along with it. Having multiple storage solutions helps me to feel organized, which helps me to enjoy my time at home. n

[IN THE GARDEN]

GET YOUR fruit on Growing fruit trees has experienced a ground swell of interest over the past few years. There’s no better time of the year than right now to make your purchases at your local garden retailer, as the selection doesn’t get any better as the season wears on.

BY MARK CULLEN

the winter damage on my trees and prune out any dead wood. Then I open the tree up to the sun and wind by pruning out the heaviest wood right down into the heart of the tree. This makes for odd looking trees, but great fruit. Pears are the easiest fruit to grow. They generally do not like to be pruned, and they are the least susceptible to insect and disease problems. For the most part, your tree will be overloaded with fruit every second year. Canadian-grown fruit trees provide some assurance that the tree is hardy to your area, and suitable for growing in our weather and soil conditions.

Plant all fruit trees in open, nutrient rich soil. Peaches really enjoy a soil mix that is 50 per cent sand. Never plant a fruit tree in a depression where water accumulates, as none of them enjoy wet feet. Plant high, dig a wide hole about a metre in diameter, and use three or four bags of quality planting soil mix. Stake your trees for the first three or four years, and in the fall put a spiral plastic rodent protector on the trunk to prevent rabbit damage. In her book, Growing Urban Orchards, Susan Poizner explores the ups and downs, as well as the how-to’s, of caring for fruit trees in the city. OrchardPeople.com n

n southern Ontario, the apple is the number one fruit tree of choice. The McIntosh apple was developed here. A lonely apple tree, without a mate, might yield some fruit, but it’s advisable to have two apple trees. If there’s an apple tree nearby in full flower at the same time as said tree, both will produce many more apples. Insects and disease are an ongoing concern, and many people want to know if they should spray. The answer is yes. I have 40 apple trees in my 10-acre garden and I spray them all with dormant spray in April before the blossoms break open, and again after the blossoms drop (around the beginning of June). I apply a combination of End All insecticide, along with garden sulphur or the lime sulphur that comes in the dormant spray kit. These products are safe to use and environmentally responsible. The cross-pollination category that requires mates to maximize their fruiting also include pear, cherry and plum trees. However, sour cherries, like Montmorency, are self-fruitful (pollinated by pollen from another flower on the same fruit tree). A Canadian introduction called Stella, which is classified as a sweet cherry, does not need a mate. Self-fruitful fruit trees include peach, apricot and nectarine, and they all need a good pruning after the winter. Each spring I assess

EYES ONLY

BY PAUL LOREFICE

Lighting requirements change as we age

EASY FIXES The advantages of using LED lighting, over incandescent or fluorescent lighting, far outweigh their high, upfront cost. LEDs emit an excellent quality of light in a range of colours and brightness. Not only do LED lights save on energy, but they don’t emit heat, nor are they damaging to the eyes. Another simple fix, is to replace existing fixtures with lights that have

a higher wattage, so that they bring more light to a space. If you’re dealing with a limited range of movement, lower light switches to an attainable height, and replace the toggle switches with newer paddle ones. Strategically placed plugs can also help you to access them easier. Automatic lights, that sense when someone walks into a space, are particularly helpful to illuminate outdoor walkways, dark closets, garages, and laundry rooms – especially when you need to be hands-free. Install two- or three-way light switches at all entrances, exits and stairwells to save you from having to backtrack, and then move forward in the dark.

PLAN AHEAD Many Canadians are choosing to age independently in their own homes. For your comfort and well-

being, it’s important to evaluate your needs before the actual needs arise. If a renovation is in your future, make sure that you include a lighting plan. This is the best time to move switches and outlets, and add lighting where needed. In order to create uniformity and to avoid dark areas that can be disorienting, a good plan incorporates layers of ambient, task and accent lighting. Pot lights can be added to an existing space with a minimal amount of damage, and add a wide area of general light. Track lighting is another easy-to-install option that features adjustable heads to direct the light exactly where you need it.

SAFETY AND FUNCTION Task lighting targets specific areas. Affordable, easy fixes include adding a pendant light, or recessed lighting, over the sink, as well as undercabinet lights to distribute light evenly on work surfaces. If needed, consider LED strip lights that can be placed at the top of cabinets and on the toe kicks to help reflect light. It’s imperative that stairwells and hallways are well illuminated. In addition to overhead lighting, step lights and recessed wall lights also help to create a lighted path that makes these areas easier to navigate. The installation of correct lighting helps to prevent accidents for a safer, more comfortable environment. n Paul Lorefice is a master electrician and the owner of New City Electric Inc. in the GTA. he right lighting can make a big difference when it comes to age-related vision problems. As we age, the lenses in our eyes begin to harden and discolour, causing decreased vision and colour distortion. While brighter is often better for older eyes, the direction and the type of lighting, as well as its colour, are all important for optimal vision.

A NEW START Eat, play and live well at the Wellings of Picton

G

et a new lease on life at the Wellings of Picton. This unique apartment community was specifically designed for vibrant adults, and recently opened at the end of 2016. New residents, their families and visitors, were quick to sing the praises of this spectacular development. Father and grandfather, Donald Moisey, spent a year alone in a condo in Pickering following the passing of his wife after 60 years together. “I effectively had no friends and I was making my own meals,” says Moisey. “I'm not a cook, but at the Wellings, I get a proper meal and I have a social life.” Moisey is now enjoying a game of pool or shuffle board with new found friends, and meeting them to catch up on the daily news in the Welling's central living and dining area – an 8,000-square-foot atrium. Four stories high, the atrium is at the heart of this unique lifestyle community, which has been meticulously designed for comfort and convenience. A total of 88 oneand two-bedroom apartments are offered at the Wellings, with rents starting at $2,495 per month. “This concept is the first of its kind for our company,” says Kevin Pidgeon, president and COO of the Nautical Lands Group, which has been building award-winning retirement communities across Ontario for more than 25 years. “Our company has always been on the forefront of innovation for senior housing. This is a first for Canada.” Offering a healthy social life, the Wellings' concept offers generous-sized apartments, as well as a highquality evening meal prepared by chefs from Marquise Hospitality, and served by friendly staff in the atrium.

Also on site is a health and wellness gym, weekly fitness classes, and employees from Paramed who offer health and housekeeping services as required. Residents decide on, and only pay for, the services that they want. In addition, there's a full-time concierge, hair dressing services and residents are always welcome to bring their pets. “We opened a few months ago and we are over 60 per cent occupied,” says Rachel Henry, general manager. “People love the idea of living in Picton, just minutes from downtown, surrounded by vineyards and beautiful beaches.” David Baillie and Ginny Wilson are long-time residents of PEC. Last year they decided to sell their dream home due to ongoing maintenance and associated costs. ”Ginny had her eye on the Wellings even before the shovel went into the ground,” says Baillie, who can no longer handle stairs because of a bad knee. “We have zero regrets. Friends who come to visit say that it’s like a five-star hotel.” Doug and Marjorie Marchant were among the very first residents to move into the Wellings, after deciding that they didn't want to worry about maintaining their Gothic farmhouse outside of Picton. “We are active people,” says Marjorie. “Now we can lock the door and travel. No worries. It is perfect.” n

SHELTER COVE

M

Waterfront community on the shores of Lake Erie

any of us have fantasies about getting away from it all – leaving the rat race behind, and living an exciting and meaningful life. We seek a lifestyle that is close to nature, along with the beauty, peace and serenity that goes with it. Shelter Cove, a gated waterfront community on the shores of Lake Erie, makes this dream a reality. Shelter Cove’s list of perquisites is extensive, and it’s difficult to list them all. Because Shelter Cove is a gated community, access is controlled, thus ensuring privacy and security for the residents. Homeowners at Shelter Cove have the privileged opportunity to experience nature in all its glory. It’s customary to see a magnificent bald eagle soaring through the sky, or a flock of wild turkeys browsing the edge of the woods. Deer regularly make their rounds throughout the community. For those who are into boating, Shelter Cove is idyllic. It’s only a short walk from your home to your dock, and you can be on the lake in a matter of minutes. The name, Shelter Cove, relates to the natural harbour that

68

ACTIVE LIFE

M AY / J U N E 2 0 1 7

it’s on, which means that the private, on-site marina is protected from the wave action of the lake – ensuring that your watercraft is also protected. If you like fishing, then you likely know that Lake Erie is one of Ontario’s best lakes for sport fishing, with an abundance of walleye and perch. Shelter Cove’s on-site amenities will include a 5,000-square foot, residents-only clubhouse, which is to be completed later this year. There’s also a large outdoor swimming pool, along with planned walking trails and residents’ garden plots, as well as provisions for boat and RV storage. At Shelter Cove, chores like grass cutting, leaf raking and snow shoveling are all looked after, as these are all included in the low $100 per month maintenance fee. In addition, residents enjoy the convenience of natural gas. It’s important to note that the community produces its own drinking water, sourced through reverse osmosis from an artesian well. Shelter Cove also has its very own state-of-the-art wastewater plant, so there are no septic tanks. myhomepage.ca/activelife

2017-03-30 1:09 PM

Shelter Cover offers a quality lifestyle with built-in financial benefits Amenities surrounding Shelter Cove include supermarkets, healthcare, golf courses and a variety of restaurants, as well as quaint boutiques, and service clubs in nearby Simcoe and Port Dover. Because Shelter Cove is situated along the shores of Lake Erie, winters here are less severe, thus allowing for the growth of trees and plants not found in Hamilton or Toronto. This area is a part of the great Carolinian Forest The homes at Shelter Cove are priced from as little as $169,000 with leasehold tenure. They’re referred to as manufactured homes, which means that they are built indoors under strict quality control, safe from the elements, ensuring that the building materials are not exposed to rain and, therefore, unlikely to warp. Built to the Ontario Building Code, the homes are exceptionally well insulated and come with high-efficiency gas furnaces to ensure that you’re comfortable and cosy all year long. Leasehold tenure comes with substantial financial advantages, because residents don’t have the capital outlay of a serviced building lot, which can run as high

as $150,000. Investing this money wisely has the potential of paying the annual cost of the lease, while the principal remains intact. For instance, if you sold a home in Hamilton for $504,000 and moved to Shelter Cove, you could take out a mortgage for $184,000, and then invest the proceeds from the sale of your home and have an average annual return of just over $31,000. After paying the mortgage, leasehold fees, taxes and maintenance fee, you’d be ahead by more than $13,000 per year. Visit the Shelter Cove Sales Office for accurate facts and figures as it relates to your particular scenario. n

CONTAC T INFORMATION The Shelter Cove Sales Office and Model Homes are open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and by appointment on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. 1.866.416.8848 / sheltercove.ca

[TAKE TWO]

BY BRUCE KIRKLAND

Ryan Gosling in La La Land

Oscar Commentary Between the misleading contents of the incorrect envelope, Warren Beatty’s bewilderment and Faye Dunaway’s loose lips, the 2017 Academy Award ceremony went so far off the rails that the emotional wreckage will be remembered forever.

U

nfortunately, as is always the case with controversy and confusion on Oscar night, that might mean that people overlook, or even forget, the films. I am here to refocus your attention. The best films of 2016 remain inviting, regardless of the presentation debacle. With a mature audience in mind, these are my top three choices from the 10 titles that were nominated as best picture:

La La Land | Classy, sweet,

romantic and old-school, this modern musical is a throw-back. It recalls the era when musicals were an integral part of the Hollywood landscape. Its Canadian star, Ryan Gosling, is linked in energy and muscular elegance

to the likes of dance legend Gene Kelly (An American in Paris). I once spent a precious hour with Kelly for a Toronto interview and now, in interviews with Gosling, I see how the two men share a sly humour and engaging modesty. Damien Chazelle, writer-director of La La Land, has created something precious and timeless. Filmed on a sound stage to enhance a fantasy version of Los Angeles, it is gorgeous to behold. The music is inspiring. The performances are bold, leading to Gosling’s best actor nomination and Emma Stone’s best actress win. Overall, La La Land tied the record for most Oscar nominations with 14 (equal to All About Eve and Titanic), and won six.

Arrival | Denis Villeneuve’s masterful film took top place on my own Top Ten list. While this is a Hollywood science fiction tale about strange aliens who visit Planet Earth on an unknown mission, the film is really about humanity and the ebb and flow of life itself. Without embracing death, Amy Adams’ riveting character cannot move on. To me, that is a profound reminder of our fragility and our strength as humans. A note of caution – Arrival is non-linear. Go with the flow and figure it out later, preferably in animated conversations with family and friends who shared the experience. Meanwhile, watch for more films from Quebec’s Villeneuve, a quiet genius who has now excelled in a series of English-language productions. Arrival was nominated for eight Oscars, winning one (and deserving more). Fences | Both directed by and starring Denzel Washington, this powerful film is a mission statement from Washington. It honours his respect for the late African-American playwright August Wilson. As one of 10 Wilson plays devoted to the 20th Century, it chronicles a metaphoric story that represents the black experience of the 1950s. In the sometimes terrifying, and always enthralling, intimacy of this fractured story of family, audiences sense the bigger picture. Washington is exceptional, both as the workmanlike director and as the fearless actor. Fences was nominated for four Oscars, winning one by the gifted Viola Davis as best supporting actress. n

Film critic, Bruce Kirkland’s career spans more than four decades, working at The Toronto Star, The Ottawa Journal and for 35 years at the Toronto Sun. A life-long film buff, Bruce now shares his passion and insight with Active Life readers. bruce.kirkland@hotmail.com
