OUR MIND CAN PLAY TRICKS ON US. In this issue we have an article by Scott Leith about tricking our brains so that we view exercise as pleasurable. We now know that the brain is plastic, which refers to brain plasticity (Neuroplasticity), and that it has the ability to change throughout life. In addition to genetic factors, the environment in which a person lives, as well as the actions of each person, all play significant roles as it relates to plasticity. There are three stages when Neuroplasticity occurs. At the beginning of life, of course, when the immature brain organizes itself. In the case of a brain injury, it can compensate for lost functions or maximize remaining functions. And, thirdly, the brain is always adapting throughout adulthood whenever we learn something new and memorize it. As the decades pass, I don’t think that there are many of us who haven’t been concerned about the onset of dementia. This word is an overall term that describes a group of symptoms associated with a decline in memory, or other thinking skills, which are severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. I can’t seem to trick my brain, especially if it knows that there’s a delicious treat in the kitchen. If anything, it reminds me over and over that I might want to indulge my craving. That urgent desire, or longing for something, is what generally leads to addictions. Kudos to anyone who has overcome an addiction. Treating drug and alcohol dependency often involves retraining the brain so that the addict’s biochemistry is rebalanced. But, the old neural pathways (the links between addiction and pleasure) are still there. We rely on willpower when it comes to exercising, dieting, saving money, overcoming procrastination, or quitting drinking or smoking. But what is willpower? Many of us believe that we might improve our lives if only we could harness this mysterious quality. Practicing selfcontrol in the moment is the best definition that I could come up with. However, making a ‘commitment’ to something, is being psychologically attached to that goal, along with the intention of sticking with it for the long haul. It all comes back to our brain, and how we can navigate its plasticity for a new way of thinking – and doing.

TILL DEBT DO YOU PART Looking for love in all the wrong places?

D

Deal breaker

Some debt is considered worse than others. The Finder survey found that payday loans were viewed as the least acceptable form of debt. More than 58 per cent of Canadians said that if they found out that their partner was carrying this type of liability, then it would be a deal breaker for them. Pay day loans have notoriously high interest rates, and are often used as a last option to get funds. Other types of debt that may have your love interest rethinking, also include credit card debt, and money owed to family and friends.

12

ACTIVE LIFE

While honesty is always the best policy, it’s never more important than when dealing with personal finances. Acceptable debt

Angus Kidman is the editor-inchief at Finder and he says, “The uncomfortable truth is that the majority of Canadians are turned off by personal debt. Given so many people in relationships aspire to share finances, it’s not surprising that individuals view partner debt unfavourably. In saying that, not all types of debt are equal. Prospective partners are more likely to accept mortgages or business loans.” These types of loans don’t evoke the same feeling as high-interest debts do. Mortgages or business loans are viewed as ‘good’ debt, as they relate to assets and the potential of increasing your earning capacity.

Indebted romantics

If you’re searching for love, and think that your debt might be holding you back, then your first step is to figure out how you are going to pay it down. Make a plan to cut out the variable spending, and commit to the plan.

Also, sit down and have a serious talk about money with your love interest. If your debt is hindering your relationship, it’s better to find out now, rather than later. You may learn that they, too, have some debt issues that they haven’t been able to discuss, or that they’re very supportive. While honesty is always the best policy, it’s never more important than when dealing with personal finances. “While it can be difficult to talk about debt, it’s important to have open and honest conversations about the state of your finances to minimize relationship friction,” says Kidman. “You should also have frank discussions about the level of debt you’re willing take on in the future, and the circumstances under which it’s acceptable.” One of the most common reasons that couples split up has to do with their relationship with money. To get your new relationship off to a good start, it’s best to be open and direct, and make a plan to become debt-free. n

ating can be complicated, especially later in life. You’re probably carrying some extra baggage, which can come in many forms. And, there still might be an ex in the faded picture, as well as children and grandchildren. It can be a difficult world to navigate. When you’re younger there are any number of reasons of why you might fall for someone. But, when you’re older, you’re hopefully a lot wiser too. In addition to emotional baggage, financial baggage could be holding you back from finding the perfect partner. A personal finance website called Finder, found that 68.5 per cent of Canadian adults say that they would reconsider a relationship based on a person’s financial debt. Baby boomers might be a tad more savvy, as 70 per cent of those surveyed would consider their partner’s debt unacceptable and a roadblock for the relationship to continue.

PUT DOWN THE BOOK It’s time to pick up the Kindle Paperwhite

BY GREG GAZIN

F

or book lovers everywhere, this is a touchy subject. There’s something tangible about a book – even the smell of it triggers our senses. However, if you’re an avid reader, and are always on the go, books can be very heavy. Plus, they take up a lot of room (and weight) when packed in a suitcase. Even if you have a tablet or an iPad, you might want to consider the allnew Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. The Kindle Paperwhite is a compact, low-cost, high-resolution e-Reader that electronically stores thousands of books with an innovative display screen – you almost think that you’re reading from a paperback. It’s only 6.6 inches tall, 4.6 inches wide, 0.30 inches thick and weighs less than seven ounces, making it easy to hold in your hand, and slip into a large pocket, purse or knapsack.

A sight for sore eyes

Its six-inch, hi-res screen offers 300 pixels-per-inch resolution – the same as a standard photograph. The glare-free (almost) screen makes it a beach-worthy companion. If you read at night, it’s less likely to keep you awake after you turn off the lights due to E-ink display technology. This feature doesn’t emit the same type of blue light as you find on televisions and tablets, which, apparently, keeps you more alert. With a fiveLED manually adjustable backlight, you can comfortably read at night without additional light, and without disturbing your partner. How many times have you picked up a book and found that the type was very small? With the Kindle Paperwhite, you can adjust the font

18

ACTIVE LIFE

type and the font size. The built-in dictionary is easy to use, plus the extended battery life requires less downtime for recharging and is ideal for a lengthy plane ride.

Enhanced highlights

The biggest improvement of the fourth generation of the Kindle Paperwhite is its new waterproof body. Previous models were toast if they got wet. Now that it’s IPX8-rated, it’d still work if it was soaked for an hour in two metres of fresh water – making it less of a worry when beaching it with the family. The standard model now comes with 8GB of storage. You can store thousands of e-books on the device, and you can store Kindle e-books in the cloud for free. Millions of titles are available on Amazon, and many are free or cost less than $1, making it easier to discover new titles and authors. It’s important to note that Kindle still doesn’t support the e-Pub

MARCH/APRIL 2019

format, which is commonly found on other platforms and at public libraries, but you can store your own PDFs and select documents. The new 32GB model includes more storage, and supports Audible. While you can listen to audiobooks, it appears (at the time of publication) that files from Audible U.S. accounts currently work with this model. There isn’t an on-board headphone jack, but the new Paperwhite is equipped with Bluetooth, so you can connect to a wireless headset, a speaker or earbuds. Kindle Paperwhite models are available with Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi plus free cellular connectivity, which lets you download your books from anywhere for free. Prices start at $139.99 for the 8GB Wi-Fi model. n Greg Gazin is a syndicated tech columnist, blogger, podcaster (host and producer), and contributes to canoe.com, Troy Media and Active Life magazine. Amy Sky & Marc Jordan The law of attraction is working overtime BY CECE M. SCOTT Massey Hall, 2016 ACTIVE LIFE

MARCH/APRIL 2019

[COVER STORY]

Amy Sky Twilight Rose

Jordan says that he remembers that Sky was wearing a dress from the 50s and that she looked like a movie star. As a couple, and individually, the two have written chart-topper songs for pop royalty. They were married on December 31, 1987. Influenced by singer/songwriters of the 70s, Sky wrote her first songs at the age of 13. Reba McEntire recorded If Only, written by Sky, on her album called Just a Little Love. Olivia Newton-John, Melissa Manchester, and Cyndi Lauper have all recorded songs by Sky, as did Heart, with whom Sky wrote Voodoo Doll and Cherry Blossom Road. A backup singer for Newton-John, Anne Murray, and Ronnie Hawkins, Sky’s musical journey began in Nashville. “When I played with Ronnie in Nashville, a lot of music business people came out,” says Sky. “I got a write-up in the Tennessean, and from there, was discovered by several songwriters.” Along with playing the piano on her latest songs, Sky also plays with a cello quartet. “Music is the portal to spirituality for me,” says Sky. Jordan was immersed in music at a young age. His father, Charles Jordan, was a radio host, singer and cantor, “My dad loved the maritime folk songs, and those early records of Pete Seeger,” says Jordan. “It was these initial influences that helped me later on when I wrote songs such as Rhythm of My Heart for Rod Stewart.”

Initially, Jordan studied film at Brock University. He played at a number of iconic hippie coffee houses in Yorkville, including the celebrated Riverboat. He had his first hit in 1978 with Marina del Rey. As a couple, one of their first duets was a song written by Jordan called Soul on Soul. Sky released it on her CD called Burnt By The Sun. “Right after we recorded it, Rod Stewart asked for permission to record it as a single, so we couldn’t release it as such,” says Sky. “But, it’s not too shabby when Rod Stewart covers one of your songs.” The accolades and awards kept on coming, with Jordan winning a Juno for producer of the year (1994) for Waiting For A Miracle on the Reckless Valentine album. He won several ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) awards, and the first Canadian Smooth Jazz award for male vocalist (2005). Sky has won three SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) awards, an American Songwriting Award, a Canadian Smooth Jazz Award for best composition (2007), as well as three Juno nominations. Written by Sky and Eddie Schwartz, the song, Everything Love Is, won a Canadian Smooth Jazz Award for Best Composition (2007). myhomepage.ca/activelife

ome 33 years ago, Amy Sky and Marc Jordan met in Los Angeles at the home of composer and songwriter, John Capek. Sky had recently moved there, and Jordan had been living in L.A. since 1977. “We were instantly drawn to each other,” says Sky. “I thought Marc was handsome, charismatic and extremely funny. We just never seemed to run out of things to talk about.”

other’s cheerleaders.” – Amy Sky

Along with her music, Sky has had a successful live theatre run. As the lead in the Broadway play Blood Brothers (1996 and 1998) at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Sky played the role of Mrs. Johnstone, the mother of seven children. “The story was about a poor, working class woman, whose husband left her when she got pregnant with her sixth kid, which were twin boys,” says Sky. “She gave up one of the brothers to a wealthy woman. The twins, played by the late David Cassidy and the late Michael Burgess, grew up on different sides of the tracks, before actually meeting. It was what really launched my career.” The Liv On Project was formed as an intimate partnership between friends, including Olivia Newton-John, Beth Nielsen Chapman and Sky. Newton-John’s sister, Rona, passed away suddenly from brain cancer, and Olivia wanted to write a song for her sister’s memorial service. “She asked me to write the song with her,” says Sky. “As we wrote, we realized that there were not a lot of songs that addressed loss and grieving. One of the biggest things about going through something difficult, is feeling alone. It is very healing to know that other people are on the same journey.” Jordan, too, has branched out in various genres. In 2010, at the age of 62, he appeared in the movie, Score: A Hockey Musical, playing the part of Newton-John’s husband. “I thought I was auditioning to do the music,” says Jordan. “But the director thought I looked like the

husband – a nutty professor kind of guy. I had quite a few lines in the movie, but it was short takes, so I didn’t find it hard.” The couple’s two children are also involved in music. Zoe Sky Jordan (28), lives in Nashville and sings, writes and plays guitar. Ezra Jordan (25), is an alt-pop, R&B singer, as well as a songwriter and piano player. “I am also grateful to have two children who are funny and creative,” says Sky. “We really get each other.” Committed to giving back, the couple supports causes that are near and dear to their hearts. Jordan, who is dyslexic, helps with related fundraisers. Sky advocates for CAMH and the Mood Disorders Association. “I have been vocal about living with mood disorders,” says Sky. “Most notably, postpartum depression, following the birth of both my kids.” To stay fit, the couple enjoys cycling, hiking, swimming and practicing yoga together. Retirement is not in their foreseeable plans. In fact, Jordan has a new career hosting a radio show on Jazz.FM91 called Songs I Wish I Had Written. In addition, he is the chair of the songwriting department at Norman Jewison’s Canadian Film Centre, and plays gigs with the quartet, Lunch at Allen’s. Currently, Sky is making a new CD with her husband, who is the featured guest artist. Jordan is releasing his 16th CD called Both Sides, recorded with the Prague Symphony Orchestra. The couple is also working on a Broadway musical called Fly High – a love story between a circus performer and a rock musician who are trying to make their world a better place. “I love my life; I love my wife; I love making music,” says Jordan. n ACTIVE LIFE

hopping for a car can elicit a great deal of angst. There are so many choices, and we want the best price, an awesome warranty, the perfect colour (of course), as well as state-of-theart safety features and an impressive stereo for in-car karaoke. Today, shopping for a mattress can provoke similar anxiety. On average, we spend one third of our day sleeping – so by the age of 75, that’s 25 years of sleeping, or 9,125 days. It’s doubtful that we give as much thought to a mattress purchase, as we do to a vehicle. THE PLAYERS

The first ads for Casper started popping up on billboards a few years ago. While they were very good at creating brand awareness, it took awhile to figure out what they were selling. Was it a memory foam mattress topper? How could a substantial mattress be in a box? Shortly after, came Endy – the all-Canadian alternative. In 2009,

Co-founders of Endy, Mike Gettis and Rajen Ruparell, set out to create a sleep company by Canadians, for Canadians – one that would offer comfort, quality and convenience. “We took an outdated business model and cut out the middle man,” says Mark Kleyne, Digital Marketing Manager for Novosbed. “We sell direct to the consumer and control all channels of communication.”

then decide on the one that you’ll be lying on for the next 10 to 15 years. All these bed-in-a-box products come with a 90- to 120-day trial period. “We know that it can take some time to adjust to a new mattress,” says Sarah Feldman, Director of PR and Communications for Endy. “So, we give customers 100 nights to have it in their sleep environment.” If you don’t like the mattress after the trial period, all companies say that they recycle or donate them to local charities.

densities. Casper claims to include a support foam framework that contours to each area of the body for pressure-relieving support. What’s true about both of these options, is that the top layer of foam does cradle the body and helps to reduce pressure on sensitive areas. However, depending upon your age and weight, getting out of that cocooned position isn’t so easy, nor is the mattress firm enough to support you when rolling over or attempting to get up. The profile of these mattresses is generally thinner, ranging between eight and 12 inches in depth. Measure the height of your frame, as well as the foundation and the mattress that you choose, to determine if you can sit on the side of the bed, and get in and out easily. Endy and Capser come in a box

about the size of a hockey bag, and it’s quite fascinating to watch it grow after the shrink wrap has been removed. Unlike Casper and Endy, the Logan & Cove brand is a spring and memory foam hybrid. They have added a heat dissipating gel memory foam, as well as silk and eucalyptusderived fibres, to help with natural temperature regulation. Not many hybrids are delivered in a box, so this one is larger and the full length of the product. Plus, the depth of this mattress is 14 inches.

TRIAL AND ERROR

While all name-brand mattresses come with a warranty, it’s difficult to determine what you might like, even if shopping in a bricks and mortar store. You may lie down on half a dozen for a few minutes, and

The split (two-piece) box spring/ foundation, used for a king-size bed, often creates a hump in the middle, and this gets worse as the mattress ages. Endy does not offer support frames at this time, but Casper offers an engineered, solid wood foundation, with perfectly spaced slats, that provides optimal support and eliminates this problem. Novosbed carries other bed-ina-box products, but found that their Logan & Cove brand appealed to a more-mature market because of its hybrid construction. However, their first release proved to be too firm for some, so they recently added a medium/plush alternative. Casper now offers three options, and both Casper and Endy are adding to their bedding line-up with pillows and linen. “As we age, it’s important to consider a mattress with strong support that has the right amount of pressure point relief around your hips and shoulders,” says Kleyne. “This will ensure proper spinal alignment, which is imperative for a continued, rejuvenating, sleep.” n

Mind Games BY SCOTT LEITH

ALL-OR-NOTHING THINKING

s your body’s command centre, the brain sends messages to your muscles to tell them to move. It also moderates our mood, energy levels and motivation. When it comes to exercising, your brain is the most important body part, and it could be tricking you into avoiding exercise.

MIXED MESSAGES

During an intense workout, your brain may read the experience as painful, which can translate into negative, or irrational, thoughts. After the tenth burpee (squat thrust) or 20 minutes of hot yoga, your brain may send you a message to quit. Then, when you want to do the exercise again, your mind might intervene and invent reasons to avoid the anticipated discomfort. If your brain is telling you to avoid the suffering of working out, you’re more likely to skip it. After a tough workout, you may think that exercise sucks. If you’re watching what you eat and don’t see immediate results, you may say that diets don’t work. It’s okay to not like some forms of exercise, but it doesn’t have to mean that you dislike them all. The trick is to realize when you’re

generalizing, and bring you brain back into line. Mind games are often used by those who are adept at pursuing a desired goal. Whether you’re motivated to run a marathon, embark on a new career, or are committed to improving your relationships, you want your brain to experience the pleasure of success.

MASTER YOUR MIND

It’s easy to recognize your brain’s negative reactions, and it’s just as easy to shift your mind for a more positive response. Our mind plays tricks on us. We may react with alarm if we see, what we think is, a snake, and then it turns out to be a stick. We may see our own reflection in a window at night and jump back as if it’s an intruder. Our minds are trained to question these emergency messages, and, if necessary, override them. When we

MARCH/APRIL 2019

take a second look, and see it for what it is, we are filled with relief. The same school of thought applies so that you can disarm irrational thoughts that sabotage exercise – you just have to take another look.

EMOTIONAL REASONING

Everyone falls for this at some stage – you fool yourself into believing that whatever you’re feeling must be true. Perhaps you considered joining a fitness class, but your emotions tell you that people will judge you, so you decide not to go. The key is to push past your emotions to a more logical, goal-focused approach. Learning to question your feelings is not just the key to success as it relates to fitness, but it’s the foundation of true emotional intelligence. n

Trick your brain for better workouts

If you splurge on fast food, it doesn’t mean that you’ve completely sabotaged your diet. Nor does it mean that you can’t achieve your fitness goals, if you’re not available to workout five times per week. This type of all-or-nothing thinking leaves you feeling inadequate. Instead of dwelling on what you didn’t achieve, refocus on what you actually did. Anything that you do towards improving your quality of life, is a step in the right direction.

ARTS AND CULTURE

In 2017, international artists were invited to Churchill as part of the Sea Walls Festival, which was initiated to protect the world's oceans. A total of 18 murals were painted on buildings throughout the town. One mural was painted on a plane wreck found along the 30-kilometre length of Churchill’s drive-able road. The sleeping polar bear depicted on the polar bear holding facility is also a must-see. This facility was built in the 1980s as part of a program to protect residents and prevent the killing of problem bears. At the Itsanitaq Museum, you will find a comprehensive collection of historical artifacts dating back to the Pre-Dorset culture (1,700 BC), as well as contemporary Inuit art depicting daily activities of the north. A stuffed polar bear provides an intimate perspective of the size of their teeth and claws. Gift shops are filled with northern novelties, including fur lined moccasins and Inuit art. At the Northern Store, you can buy everything from food items to snowmobiles. myhomepage.ca/activelife

ocated on the west shore of Hudson Bay, Churchill, Manitoba is known as the polar bear capitol of the world. It is here that approximately 1,000 of the world's largest land predators make their annual migration. In the fall, they congregate amongst the Krummholz trees, wetlands and moon-like rock formations on the edge of the Hudson Bay, and wait for the ice to become thick enough so that they can venture out to hunt for seals before returning to land again in the late spring. In order to keep the streets of Churchill safe, polar bear guards keep watch around the perimetre of this town to deter any bears that may have lost their way.

NORTHERN FASCINATIONS

Located approximately 2,000 kilometres north of Winnipeg, and just below the Nunavut border, winters in Churchill are long – lasting approximately eight months. When the ice in the Churchill River starts to move again come spring, the tundra comes alive with arctic wildflowers, and animal and bird migration. Churchill is uniquely positioned on the corner of three biomes – marine, boreal and tundra. As a result, it’s possible to view the flora and fauna particular to each biome within a very small area. At the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, visitors can take part in an amazing learning adventure. At this comfortable, 84-bed facility, you will share space with active-research scientists. One of their most popular adventures is a five-day Belugas in the Bay program. Churchill is the summer feeding grounds for more than 3,000 belugas – the largest population in the Arctic. Kayaking with these charming, talkative whales, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Also at the centre, you can discover a birding hotspot, where more than 250 species of birds nest, or pass through on their yearly migration. You might see hundreds of snow geese, as well as such rarities as Ross’s Gull and the Bohemian waxwing.

TUNDRA TREKKING

With Frontiers North, you can take a ride in a heated tundra buggy along trails, through tidal flats and permafrost lakes. Expert guides share stories of northern life, in addition to tales about local bear personalities, including the mighty fighter called Scarface Victor, and Dance, so named because of his light-footed sparring maneuvers. Keep your eyes open for arctic fox, hare and polar bears, as they return from their annual hunt on the sea ice. After the long winter in Churchill, dog-sledding changes to dog-carting with the spring thaw. Charismatic musher, Dave Daley of Wapusk Adventures, takes you on a mile-long trail ride through the boreal forest with 28 enthusiastic huskies. Daley loves to share his heroic, life-anddeath, dog-racing stories.

To get a birds-eye view of the area, book a tour with Hudson Bay Helicopters. The pilot will point out local hangout spots for caribou, moose and bears. Polar Bears like to rest, and conserve their energy, on the kelp beds. Churchill is one of the best spots on the planet for aurora borealis (northern lights) viewing. Because it lies directly beneath the Auroral Oval in the Northern Hemisphere, there's auroral activity for more than 300 nights per year. In addition to convenient flight access, the train from Winnipeg is set to re-open this spring. n travelmanitoba.com Kate Robertson can be contacted at kateflyingsolo@gmail.com

This municipality in southern Ontario is best known for its beaches and towering limestone cliffs. Sandbanks Provincial Park is the most popular with its white sand beaches, sand dunes and clear blue water. North Beach Provincial Park is a smaller version, and there's no overnight camping at this location. Located in the heart of Wellington, is Wellington Rotary Public Beach. Here, parking is free and a boardwalk lines the beach.

A new escape room is to open soon at Macaulay House, and Graveyard & Gallow Tours are held at Macaulay Heritage Park during the summer months. The Regent Theatre in Picton is a rare example of an Edwardian opera house. Toronto architects, Warrington and Page, transformed an 80-year old former warehouse into a movie theatre. It opened on November 2nd, 1918 and a ticket cost .25 cents. Further renovations made room for live theatre in 1922. Hard times led to the closure of The Regent in 1980, but it reopened in 1992 with a limited schedule. Major renovations in 2010 included an enhanced sound system, digital cinema and comfortable seating.

ORGANIZATION

L

iving in a decluttered home not only helps you to retrieve things with ease, but it also helps to clear your mind. The popularity of Tidying Up with Marie Kondo speaks volumes. For some people, home organization is a methodical ritual, lovingly practiced. For others it’s a constant battle, bobbing above the waves of mounting stuff. Finding space for everything can be a problem, but it might have to do more with the way that your house, and closets, are designed.

36

ACTIVE LIFE

Don’t touch it yet

BY JANE LOCKHART

When we first visit a client’s home, we ask them not to tidy up in advance. We want to see how they live, and what their house looks like when they aren’t expecting company. No one likes this request. Embarrassed glances are exchanged between the homeowners, and apologies are mumbled for the perceived mess. It’s uncomfortable, but in order to fix it, it’s important to see how people use their space and what the issues are.

MARCH/APRIL 2019

Come up with a plan

After a review of the house, we need to assess where their storage is located, how it’s used, and whether we can improve on what already exists. Post-war homes that were built between 1945 and 1965 typically had three types of closets – a linen closet with shelves, as well as an entry closet and a closet in the bedrooms with a horizontal hanging bar under a shelf. A broom closet was also common. As designs modernized, and reflected the homeowner’s requests, myhomepage.ca/activelife

Photography, Larry Arnal; (kitchen interior) Jillian Jackson

It all starts in the closet

WHEN PUTTING YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER, ADD CREATIVE DESIGN TO THE EQUATION, SO THAT YOU ACHIEVE ORGANIZATIONAL BLISS. – Jane Lockhart

we started to see pantries off the kitchen, a separate laundry/ mudroom, as well as larger closets in the bedrooms or small walk-in closets. Today, house plans maximize storage areas, but it doesn’t mean that you’ll feel organized.

Find unused space

Good design is the result of good planning. Therefore, every inch matters in a closet, or in a room that’s built for storage. When dealing with a closet, the designer will review which items that you wear most often, as well as whether you collect hats, scarves, jewellery, shoes, handbags, and the like. Some of these items will require different storage solutions. If you don’t wear dresses, perhaps you can get rid of the high rod, and double your space with two rods for shirts, jackets and pants. Rod heights can be assessed based on your clothing items and the length of your pants when folded.

Light it up

If you can’t see what it’s in your closet, then it becomes the no-go zone. Older homes didn’t incorporate wiring for lighting, but there are other options. Think of a brightly lit store and how easy it is to view the items. In my book, lighting is the number one solution for storage organization. I like to install strip LED lighting under shelves. This way you can see everything without pulling it out. Recessed, daylight-coloured, LED bulbs in the ceiling help you to see the true colours of an outfit. And, in walk-in closets, I like adding a gorgeous pendant light or a chandelier for a bit of glamour.

Drawers for your drawers

Drawers in closets are very accommodating, and help to eliminate extra furniture in your bedroom. Within the drawers, it’s helpful to have organizational trays and separations for your socks, knickers and other

intimates, so that you can see everything when you open it. The same rules apply to the pantry, the broom closet, the laundry room and mudroom. Personalize your shelving and space requirements to accommodate all that you need and use. Do canned goods and spices have a dedicated place? Is there a space for the vacuum cleaner? Are there enough shelves in your rooms for books, toys and decor?

Happiness quotient

When factoring in all that you need, add some creative design to the equation so that you achieve organizational bliss. Happiness = space for all of your stuff. n Jane Lockhart, B.A.A.I.D., is a multi-award winning designer, author and television personality. Jane Lockhart Interior Design janelockhart.com

Well-equipped work space M2M block party

HEALTHY LIVING

in Toronto

M2M by AOYUAN INTERNATIONAL

By Catherine Daley hen translated, Aoyuan, means ‘olympic garden’. Founded in 1996, Aoyuan International’s trademark philosophy is building healthy lifestyles. As an international developer, with projects in China, Hong Kong, Australia, Vancouver and Toronto, their mission is to integrate residential real estate, with sports and recreational amenities. To date, M2M is the largest masterplanned community by this developer in Canada. M2M is not only a two-minute walk from the Yonge/Finch subway, but it will have underground access to the

50

future Yonge and Cummer subway stop. Replacing an outdated plaza, this infill community will encompass the full 8.6 acres, and will include 1,650 residences, a daycare, a community centre, and more than 180,000 sq. ft. of office and retail space. WEAVING AN URBAN FABRIC

Recognizing the need for larger, family friendly suites, Aoyuan wanted to create a condo community that appealed to a wide range of buyers. Not only will residents have the use of 30,000-sq.-ft. community centre,

MARCH/APRIL 2019

but exclusive outdoor areas will be designated as quiet, or active, zones. These zones will be positioned over a two-level internal courtyard – ideal for reading, mediating or yoga. In addition to the two-storey fitness centre, the rooftop pool will offer spectacular city views. The project also includes a well-equipped work space with a boardroom for private meetings and presentations for those who prefer to work from home. A public park and a public rightof-way will connect residents and adjacent neighbours with an east/ west pedestrian laneway off of Yonge Street, which, in turn, will be connected to a network of smaller scaled streets that wind throughout the M2M community. Steps from the subway line and 24-hour transit, this Yonge Street location is truly a transportation hub, making it easy for those who have offsite destinations, including work, school and entertainment, as well as all that the city has to offer. Within this all-encompassing environment, M2M residents have access to onsite services, retail and recreational amenities. myhomepage.ca/activelife

FOCUSING ON LIFEST YLE INTELLIGENCE AND THE VALUES ASSOCIATED WITH HEALTHY LIVING PLANNING AND DESIGN

Toronto’s Wallman Architects had their work cut out for them, as it was Aoyuan’s mission to integrate M2M with the surrounding community, while giving it a distinctive presence. An eight-storey residential podium will include much-needed shops and services on the western side of Yonge Street. A lower podium, with integrated townhomes, will directly face a park for a more intimate streetscape. Here, townhomes will include front patios and gardens that are in tune with the landscaped park. On the exterior facade, ceramic materials will be embedded in glass for a translucent, textured appearance. The visually appealing technique, not only helps to maintain privacy, while still allowing for natural light, but it also strategically camouflages those levels that require mechanical equipment. Working closely with one of Toronto’s top interior architecture and design studios, U31, Aoyuan was adamant about integrating natural elements into modern living spaces. The healthy community concept ensures that maximum natural light is complemented with organic forms and materials for a serene, Zen-style environment.

Gym and yoga studios

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

With more than 300 major residential and commercial properties in China, Australia and Canada, it’s important to the major players that Aoyuan communicates their healthy living and intelligent lifestyle values to the community at large. Part of this includes their direct involvement with local initiatives and sports teams, as well as engaging the public in realtime activities. More than 600 people came out to the M2M Block Party that was held in a 9,000-sq.-ft. parking lot. Aoyan transformed the lot into a pop-up park and playground, with real grass, cedar trees and a variety of lawn games.

Complimentary yoga, Tai Chi and stretch classes were also offered. And like their target market, young families and seniors were able to embrace the healthy living concept. n The model suite and sales office are now open at 5851 Yonge Street. m2mcondos.com / 416.901.2720

oming soon to Barrie is The Landing at Little Lake – an exciting new condominium project in one of Ontario’s fastest growing cities. These condos are situated close to the North Barrie Crossing and Hwy. 400. The Landing is a unique, well-defined destination. This condominium development offers purchasers the opportunity to enjoy waterfront living surrounded by nature. Situated amidst six-plus acres of wooded parkland on the shores of Little Lake, residents can enjoy fishing, boating and hiking within steps of their back door. THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS “Historically, property growth in Barrie, and in Simcoe County, has been in the form of single-family, residential houses suitable for growing families,” says Mohamed Kader, spokesperson for The Landing Development Group. “But as the population has progressed from the need for larger homes to downsizing, many residents are eyeing Barrie as an ideal retirement destination.” New home purchasers are completely taken with the location, along with the amenities of The Landing at Little Lake. In addition, they benefit from the proximity to shopping, restaurants, healthcare services, golf, and so much more, in this vibrant, ever-growing community. LUXURIOUS LIVING The Landing’s seven storey building is constructed of steel and concrete. A total of 137 one- and two-bedroom suites (many with dens) are available, and include a balcony with unobstructed sight lines of the lake. ROMA

An elegiac cinematic poem s I write this, Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma has been acclaimed to a remarkable level with 10 Oscar nominations, and another 140plus citations from critics’ circles and awards organizations world-wide. By the time you read this, Roma will have churned through its awards season. At centre stage are the Oscars on February 24th. Roma is expected to compete with the other film tied for the nominations lead: Greek-born Yorgos Lanthimos’ wildly operatic The Favourite – an 18th century British history lesson. No two films among Oscar’s eight best picture nominees could be more dissimilar. Their stories are radically polarized. The Favourite rips into the rich tapestry of the inept reign of Queen Anne, circa 1702 to 1714. Roma weaves a quotidian tale of a middle-class family, focusing on the clan’s indigenous nanny, in Mexico City, circa 1971. The contrast between the two films is true for tone, mood, pace, attitude, impact, subtext, raison d’etre, socio-political acumen, stark images, and the way each director handles emotional highs/lows. Yet, both are great films. For me, though, Roma is the stunning and timeless masterpiece, while The Favourite is a bawdy entertainment that might soon be forgotten. Cuarón is already a double Oscarwinner for directing and editing his space drama Gravity (2013). Hurrah, but what happens (or has happened) to Roma at this year’s Academy Awards will not change its place in cinematic history as an elegiac cinematic poem. Roma is already an outlier. First, because it was produced by,

and shown on, Netflix, instead of by a Hollywood studio and screened in theatres. Second, because Cuarón photographed it in lambent blackand-white, instead of lurid colour. Third, because his Spanish-language story is an intimate journey through personal memory, not a familiar English-language drama with a constructed plot. Cuarón dedicates Roma to Lido, his own nanny of indigenous heritage. Lido raised Alfonso and his siblings from infancy. He calls her, “a second mother to us all.” Lido is “fictionalized” as Cleo in Roma, yet feels real and authentic. She is played in her acting debut by Oscar-nominated Mexican educator Yalitza Aparicio. Her naturalistic performance is as shattering as it is understated. Cleo works alongside Adela (also played by an indigenous newcomer, Nancy Garcia Garcia). They serve a chaotic family headed by Senora Sofia (Oscar-nominated Marina de

Tavira). The husband is a lost cause. The four kids are a crazy handful. Granny is doddering. Roma charts a year of personal upheavals in their collective lives. Daily events are vividly set against the maelstrom of Mexico City earthquakes, student protests, fascist uprisings, statesanctioned murders, government corruption and brutal oppression of indigenous people. Yet Roma is always lyrical at its heart, if unsentimental. Much more is communicated by image than dialogue. The film’s micro scale is sometimes joyous, sometimes heart-breaking, while Cuarón subtly transcends obvious class differences. Ultimately, beautifully, the tendrils of love stretch across the class divide. Roma is a life force. n Bruce Kirkland’s career spans more than four decades, working as a film critic for The Toronto Star, The Ottawa Journal and for 36 years at The Toronto Sun. bruce.kirkland@hotmail.com myhomepage.ca/activelife
