By Thomas Russell JAKARTA, Indonesia — On a narrow piece of land outside the Ligna Furniture headquarters here, workers planted several rows of teak about five years ago. The trees, officials say, will take another few decades to reach full maturity. Given the length of time, some older workers and management might not be around to see that happen. Instead, the

Ikea going to Kansas City By Clint Engel KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Ikea is planning a store here at the site of a vacant shopping center in the suburb of Merriam, Kan., a move that will increase its Midwestern presence and give the Swedenbased home furnishings retailer its 40th U.S. store. The company has submitted plans to the city for a proposed 349,000-square-foot store on an 18-acre tract, which is expected to open in the fall of 2014 at Interstate 35 and Johnson Drive. In a release, the Top 100 company said the store will employ about 350 people and will reflect Ikea’s latest design, with nearly

Do suppliers Aaron’s opens 2,000th store help retailers?

T

By Clint Engel BRONX, N.Y. — Rent-toown giant Aaron’s opened its 2,000th store here in late September, part of a continuing aggressive strategy that it said will include more New York City stores. The company-owned 1,200-square-foot store on White Plains Road is the latest from the Atlanta-based company, which has added 345 stores — company-owned and franchised — and 2,200 jobs in the past three years, said Ron Allen, president and CEO. “We are pleased to extend this success into the Bronx, where we’re excited to become an integral part of the community,” he said, adding that the company will add more stores in the market over the next few years. During the grand opening event, Aaron’s paid tribute to the community’s love of baseball with special guest Joe Torre, a former manager of the New York Yankees and now Major League Baseball’s executive vice president for baseball operations. Torre unveiled a Babe Ruth portrait that Aaron’s will donate to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The company commissioned

Aaron’s also is donating to two area charities, including giving some $7,000 in furniture, electronics and appliances to the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, “which educates to end the cycle of domestic violence and save lives,” according to a release.

Aaron’s also presented a plaque to Eva Muriel, director of Parkside Community Center, which offers after-school programs to more than 100 Bronx children and teens. The presentation will acknowledge the company’s pledge to renovate and restore the center over the next 12 months to include new appliances, electronics, furniture, carpeting, paint and landscaping.

his close to market, while most suppliers and retailers are probably focused on the new items set for introduction, I find myself thinking about what it takes to have a mutually beneficial partnership between retailers and suppliers. I’ve been told that the most productive relationships require many of the same ingredients found in a successful relationship between two partners: trust, honesty, loyalty and lots of communication. However, when one considers that half of all marriages end in divorce, and that more often than not, a lack of communication is usually the culprit, I wonder, especially in these challenging economic times, if suppliers and retailers are making the effort to communicate openly and honestly about their respective needs. Before you dismiss this topic, I should tell you that the following questions and concerns were shared with me last week by a group of retailers. Here, pretty much verbatim, are some of the questions and topics they said they would like suppliers to respond to: How are the factories we buy from helping their retail customers survive? Reps, they contend, don’t work for the store the way they used to prior to the recession. Who are their alliances with these days? What should the supplier’s responsibility to the retailer be? Are vendors issuing credit to their retailers in a timely manner? Do vendors protect the line for the retailer? How do vendors show their appreciation to the retailer for the business? Are your vendors willing to sell pure-play online retailers who compete with you? Ask anyone who has been in a troubled or failed relationship and the odds are good they will tell you that had they communicated more often and more openly, the relationship would have been more productive and profitable. I would invite all suppliers to take a look at the topics retailers shared with me. These are issues that matter to your customers. As a result, they should matter to you. And since every coin has two sides, I’d welcome input from suppliers who may have a few concerns of their own. Email me at rallegrezza@ furnituretoday.com. I’ll look for you at market. Hahn launches importer DesignWorks By Heath E. Combs HIGH POINT — Ron Hahn will launch a case goods importer called DesignWorks at this month’s High Point Market that joins the industry veteran with the former designers of Sitcom Furniture. Hahn is the former CEO and president of Universal Furniture, co-founder of Master Design and more recently of Thomas Hahn and Home. In High Point, DesignWorks will have a 10,000square-foot showroom in Hamilton Square, 101 S.

Hamilton St., space 111. The market runs Oct. 13-18. Its introductions will include six bedroom collections of five to seven SKUs each. Four-piece groups will range from $1,499 to $1,999, a stepup “sweet spot” of mid-priced, better goods that Hahn said are currently undersold by the industry. In addition, the company will offer 25 occasional SKUs and five collections of dining room, along with some outdoor furniture. Pieces will be produced in Vietnam, Malaysia and

China. Initially it will sell container only. The company’s designs will have artisan styling and urban appeal “emphasizing design, quality and attention to customer service,” Hahn said. “It will appeal to the youngest demographics at retail, to those who want to live in a fresher way. It’s not traditional at all. It’s more of an urban appeal,” he said. “It’s a real unique niche. You’re not going to see product like this on the floors anywhere right now.”

Hahn described DesignWorks, with a team of industry professionals and the former Sitcom designers, as “a lean but highly motivated team that brings excellent value to the marketplace. We are well staffed in design, sourcing and quality control to best serve our retail partners,” he said. Hahn added that he is excited to return to the furniture industry. “It feels great to be in control of our destiny once again and to start fresh with a spectrum of exciting product.”

Cory opens N.Y. metro home delivery center SECAUCUS, N.J. — Hoping to enhance its delivery service for retailers in the New York City area, Cory Home Delivery has opened a new home delivery center in North Bergen, N.J. The 200,000-square-foot facility, which is five miles from New York City, is replacing a distribution center the company had operated in Elizabeth, N.J., for more than 40 years. “We are rapidly becoming a third-party logistics provider as we continue to expand our footprint of home delivery centers,” said Patrick Cory, managing partner. “By placing home delivery centers in major markets, we are prepared for growth of existing clients and new opportunities with top retailers in need of service nationwide.” Clients served from the new location include Ethan Allen, Ashley Furniture HomeStores, Thomasville Furniture and Stickley.

“The new facility is in a prime location enabling the Cory team to better serve an expanding number of clients in the NYC metro area,” Cory said. “It underscores the considerable opportunity for growth in home delivery and logistics.” In addition to the North Bergen facility, the company recently opened home delivery centers in St. Paul, Minn., and Pittsburgh. Other centers are in Miami, Baltimore, San Antonio, Dallas and Melville, N.Y.

The Harrisburg, Pa.-based buying group now has 193 owner members with 413 furniture stores in 47 states. “Furniture First offers a competitive advantage to independents in a difficult economy,” said Bill Hartman, the group’s president. He said the group’s programs add to retailers’ bottom lines “with rebates, discounts and opera-

tional efficiencies,” and help improve margins and competitiveness with benefits such as its private label goods. Furniture First also said that its October High Point Market plans include presenting its new private label, Sertamade Mattress 1st lineup in its showroom on the second floor of the Radio Building, 164 S. Main St. The exclusive line fo-

cuses on the promotional end of the mattress market. In addition, Furniture First plans a series of member-only group shops to introduce new lines and highlight its private labels. Furniture First’s showroom will display products from several of its suppliers, but the space also will serve as a business resource for members attending market.

ROOMS WITH A VIEW POPULARITY OF OUTDOOR LIFESTYLE KEEPS IT GROWING

By Cinde W. Ingram The growing importance of the outdoor room as a consumer lifestyle benefits both the homeowner and the casual furnishings industry, key industry players agree. “The outdoor room and outdoor living are moving from trends to a way of life,” said Walter R. Perkins, CEO of The HammockSource. “We are seeing larger decks, bigger patios and remodeled homes that are being set up for the outdoor lifestyle. New homes are being built with all of the amenities of the indoors in the outdoor living spaces. The outdoors is becoming more than an extension of our home, but part of our home.” Jan Trinkley, VP, Gensun Casual Living, said the outdoor room “is one of the most considered rooms in renovating and building today. What I love most is that furniture sells on two fronts — a furniture product and an entertainment product. The casual furnishings industry continues to show beautiful designs in product, fabric and color. We have never had more to offer the consumer. The future looks very good.” Ajay Gupta, president of Housewarmings Outdoor, said customers are showing strong interest in outdoor rooms, outdoor kitchens, fire pits and pergolas when visiting his retail and manufacturing facilities in Lexington, Ky. “Customers enjoy sitting outside and relaxing,” Gupta said. “Outdoor grilling is gaining even more popularity.” Peter Ryan, category manager for outdoor business at Wayfair, one of the nation’s largest online retailers of home furnishings, was equally enthusiastic in describing consumers’ response to the outdoor room. “At one point in time, outdoor kitchens and living rooms were depicted as the highest level of luxury and only a possibility in warmer climates,” Ryan said. “Over the years, the rise of home makeover shows, affordable stylish outdoor furniture and people trying to make the most of their summers in four-season climates led to the outdoor room not only being an attainable feature in a home, but also a very popular one. Based on our breadth of products on Wayfair, we’ve seen firsthand the surge in interest in every part of the outdoor room.” Kyle Johansen, merchandise manager for Coon Rapids, Minn.based HOM Furniture, agreed. “The popularity is no doubt growing as consumers are becoming aware of

FT012i6 2

the advancements that have been made over the past five years in the industry,” he said. “I think it’s been building in the southern regions and working its way up north to colder climate areas. I have family and friends who live in Florida and Arizona and they all have outdoor rooms, which are natural for that climate. However as colder climate regions like the Midwest and Northeast learn more about these rooms, those consumers are also desiring to have these great outdoor living spaces. Even though the season is shorter, people in the Midwest really want to take full advantage of the warm weather season and spend as much time outdoors as possible before hibernating in the winter.” David Barish, president and CEO of The Chair King, said growth of the outdoor room lifestyle depends on its definition. “If you’re defining the outdoor living area as an extension of the inside home, yes I think the consumer is responding to that idea and absorbing it into their lifestyle,” Barish said. “I think that popularity will continue. The outdoor living space will continue to be an extension of the indoor living space. At least in certain areas of the country, and in particular to where we are in Texas, people spend a lot of time outdoors. Many of the newer homes have very large windows opening onto the backyard so you can’t have furniture in the backyard that is of lesser taste than what you have in the inside. There would be an incongruity that wouldn’t work in someone’s lifestyle or the look of the home.” “Without question it is becoming more popular,” said Chris Carmicle, President of Brown Jordan. “Everyone’s definition of what an outdoor room actually is may not be as clear cut as a theater room or kitchen for instance, but that is not such a bad thing in many ways. Varying opinions provide us all more tools with which to work.” Eric Parsons, president of Gloster Furniture and 2012 chairman of the International Casual Furnishings Assn., said Gloster’s deep seating sales volume reflects the growth of the outdoor room. “It is truly that extension of what they’re used to indoors,” he said. “As a general rule, folks are more active and are wanting to be outdoors. They’re investing in their landscaping and in their entertaining, and with that comes a need for furniture that is a reflection of who they are and the way that they’re living.”

Outdoor living spaces often include all the amenities of the indoors. “At Lane Venture, we see the growth of the outdoor room as one of the driving forces of our business,” said Gary McCray, the manufacturer’s president. “We’re seeing it manifested in larger tickets coming in from our dealers and more involvement by interior designers.” “I think we’re still scratching the surface and the idea of an ‘outdoor room’ has not been fully adopted by the bulk of Americans,” said Ward Usmar, senior VP of sales, TUUCI, and incoming ICFA chairman. “There has undoubtedly been a larger focus on the outdoor room as is evidenced by the proliferation of publications dedicated to the outdoors, many of which are committed to ongoing consumer education on the value of developing their outdoor space.” TENDING THE GROWTH Consumers’ desires to take it outside, combined with the ability of the casual furnishings industry to fuel this movement with products for increased comfort outside the traditional boundaries of the home, help this lifestyle to spread. “As the features of an outdoor room continue to expand so will the tangible benefits,” Brown Jordan’s Carmicle predicted. “Whether it be entertaining, relaxing, cooking or even other uses we have not yet discovered, we believe the concept will maintain growth momentum. “Awareness is increasing rapidly, which is a good thing for all of us,” Carmicle said. “As consumers and buyers alike find new ideas for creating an outdoor room, our industry will grow.” When asked where he sees the outdoor living trend headed, Gupta

said, “This segment will grow for us. As a manufacturer of outdoor rooms, our dealer base is growing. We are introducing several new design concepts at the Chicago market in September. Custom room sales are up!” “Sales continue to climb and the overall trend that we are seeing is customers increasing the length of the outdoor room season by purchasing a broad range of products related to the space,” Wayfair’s Ryan said. “ It starts with planters and garden décor in the spring, moves forward to grills, dining and seating sets in the summer, and then fire pits and patio heaters in the fall to extend and get the most out of their outdoor time as possible.” Consumers can rarely buy all components to furnish their outdoor rooms in a single season. “The outdoor room is a project customers do over a few seasons,” Johansen said. A common plan may be: “Year one, patio set; year two, deep seating; year three, pergola. It just grows and grows over time. Not many customers want to or can afford to invest $20,000 in one season to do it all at once.” Gloster is among the vendors responding to consumers’ demand for value at all price point levels and is seeing tremendous growth in fire elements sold in the marketplace, Parsons said. “We see many more participants in that segment of the market today than you did just two or three years ago,” he said. “When there’s fire there’s deep seating, there’s a more casual, relaxed environment that people want to live in — that’s reflective of the deep seating that drives our business. One of the segments that continues to grow for us at a high rate is what we refer to as outdoor lounge, which is our outdoor

upholstery. I think what’s driving that is No. 1 that we use waterproof fabrics so the need for the consumer to take cushioning in and out — or the perceived need to do that — is lessened. It fits what we see as an increasing lifestyle of ‘use it when you want it and then you walk away from it when you don’t need it.’” As for other lifestyle trends, Usmar said, “It seems like people are spending more time having friends over for meals rather than going out and will spend increased time in their outdoor spaces and around the pool.” Perkins noted a number of factors encourage people to spend more time outdoors. “We need fresh air, we enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors, and we feel better out in nature. The green movement and the health movement also push us outdoors. Our indoors became closer to the outdoors years ago with larger windows, open floor plans and spectacular views of the outdoors. We pay big money for homes that have a view of the ocean or rest on a mountainside overlooking a beautiful valley so why just look at the view? Get outdoors and be a part of it.” “Outdoor rooms are a natural progression from large windows,” Perkins said. “We are cooking, eating and socializing outdoors. We are relaxing and entertaining outdoors. We want an outdoor room to do these activities in.” McCray expects the outdoor living trend to continue for the next few years. “The biggest factor in my opinion is that Americans have resigned themselves to staying in their current homes longer,” he said. “With that has come more interest in investing in their existing homes, resulting in projects like outdoor rooms. Surveys have consistently rated outdoor rooms high on homeowners’ shopping lists. Now, with the upgrades going on, they’re becoming more of a reality.” “Nothing will stop the phenomenon of the outdoor room,” Agio President Bob Gaylord said. “What I call the ‘modern age’ of the casual furnishings industry started a little less than 30 years ago. Before that, only the top 1% of homeowners ever thought about their backyards, beyond a few folding chairs and an inflatable pool for the kids. The outdoor room bandwagon is no different than the laptop or iPhone lifestyle. Thirty years ago they were also a novelty, today a necessity. The outdoor room’s future is the same thing. It is just a matter of priorities.”

On the

Philippines up and down By Thomas Russell CEBU, The Philippines — Looking at how much furniture it has shipped to the United States, the Philippines has traveled a bumpy road over the last few years. Based on Furniture/Today research, shipments to the U.S. were down 52.4% in 2009, then rose nearly 20% in 2010, only to drop 1.4% in 2011. The rollercoaster is continuing in 2012, based on the analysis of container shipments cited in the tables on this page. Despite the ebb and flow, the Philippines remains a key source. This is due to the availability of a variety of natural resources, which allows a mixed-media approach to design. “The Philippines is a little more expensive than Indonesia or China,” said Dan Bradley, president of Maitland-Smith and Henredon, which both produce goods in a 400,000plus-square-foot companyowned plant in Cebu. “But they bring a skill set and level of craftsmanship that you can’t find anywhere else in the world outside the U.S.,” he said. “The reason for that is that they have been doing this for decades.… They have gravitated to the high end and it takes decades to develop those skills in carving, finishing and application of veneers.” Hooker Fur niture also sources in Cebu, including a number of pieces in its Melange and Hooker accents line, also known as Seven Seas. “It is not a significant percentage that comes out of there, but we do find it offers a little bit of diversity from what we get from China or other places, because they have so many wonderful resources,” said Cindy Hall, director of merchandising and product administration. In particular, she cited the country’s use of

materials as diverse as capiz shell, copper and abaca. “They are such skilled craftsman.… For us, it adds an extra level of distinction,” she said. Yet as the numbers show, many companies are no longer sourcing in the Philippines for various reasons. Magnussen Home still gets some fossil stone tables out of Cebu. But it has moved most of its occasional lineup to China

and Vietnam. “It becomes tougher to make a go of it there,” said Nathan Cressman, vice president of merchandising and marketing, noting that 10 years ago, the Philippines represented about 20% of Magnussen’s occasional sales compared to a “sliver” today. He and others said the shift occurred when Chinese factories recruited Filipino designers, engineers and craftspeople to China. “You can do some of those metals and other mixed materials out of China at a better price,” Cressman said, add-

ing that the Philippines still corners the market on goods made with materials such as bamboo and fossil and mactan stone. Ray Steele, a co-owner of Gail’s Accents and also a former executive in Ultimate Accents, sourced many accent and occasional items from the Philippines in the past. But due to difficulty getting cartons suitable for reshipping, the country became a less attractive resource over time and sourcing shifted to China. “I think they are talented people, but it cost more for the obstacles than the profits we made,” Steele said, adding that Chinese factories ended up knocking off good-selling items in the end.

RoomPlace celebrating 100 years in business By Clint Engel LOMBARD, Ill. — The RoomPlace is celebrating 100 years in business starting this month with a blend of promotions and community outreach efforts. As part of the celebration, the Top 100 company is thanking the community for its support with a 100 Acts of Kindness campaign through December. Among other things, the retailer will be donating furniture to local establishments in need, such as homeless shelters, fire departments or nursing homes. Employees also will donate a total of 100 hours of their time to the organizations of their choices. And the retailer will celebrate a local “unsung hero,” RoomPlace said. Now with 21 promotional to midpriced stores in Illinois and Indiana, The RoomPlace was founded in 1912 by door-to-door salesman Sam Berman, who “decided to create a store that would provide a personalized, comfortable and affordable furniture shopping experience for customers,” according to

a release. Berman opened his first store on Chicago’s west side. Previously called Harlem Furniture, the company changed its name to The RoomPlace at Harlem Furniture in 2001 and later to The RoomPlace. “My grandfather founded the company 100 years ago, and I am thrilled to keep his vision and ideal alive,” said Bruce Berman, owner and chairman of the Lombard, Ill.-based retailer, who bought the business back late last year. “Our desire is to make every house a home and for every customer to be able to envision making memories with family and friends in a room created with furniture” from the company, he said. Among the offers in an upcoming anniversary sale — 100 weeks free financing. The ad copy also notes that a lot has changed over 100 years, including the company’s name, but the founding principles remain the same — “exceptional customer service, quality furniture and the latest styles at affordable prices.”

That’s a powerful combination. “The consumer is comfortable that I’m not trying to sell them the most expensive bed in the store, and appreciates that I am addressing his problem,” Pinel said. He added that it is “a real pleasure” to have mattresses like that in his selling portfolio because he trusts those products. Latex beds are strong sellers in France, a market in which innerspring beds, foam beds and latex beds all enjoy similar market shares. France is one of Pure LatexBliss’ strongest overseas markets, according to Kurt Ling, president of Pure LatexBliss. Is it harder for Pinel to connect with female consumers than a female salesperson? He doesn’t think so when it comes to the mattress sale itself. But when it comes to bed linens and accessories, a female salesperson has an edge, he says. A female salesperson at Maison de la Literie Prestige said women “talk the same language” on decorating issues. What’s important for all salespeople, in Pinel’s view, is the ability to establish a bond with the customer. Building a friendly relationship is critical to later getting the customer’s order, he said. That’s an insight that is helping Patrick Pinel thrive on the sales floor these days.

Bedding Today

David Perry Executive editor

Here are some mattress must-sees in High Point

T

his week, as a service to those retailers planning their High Point mattress visits, we offer a quick overview of some new bedding lines worth a good look. One of the biggest new mattress story lines in the Furniture Capital of the World this month will be unveiled in the Simmons showroom. The bedding major, aggressively seeking growth under hardcharging CEO Gary Fazio, is offering what it is billing as a major introduction in the specialty sleep arena. Simmons says the new line will have technology designed to maintain ideal sleep surface temperatures, a theme in a growing number of bedding lines. It’s unusual for a bedding major to use High Point for a big introduction, so Simmons obviously believes it has an important collection to bring to market now rather than waiting for the next Las Vegas Market. Simmons is playing its cards on this introduction close to its vest. Details will be released at market. Independent bedding producers will also be making news in High Point. Jamison, which has elevated its game in recent years, offers what it is calling the next generation in Talalay latex bedding. The company’s Talalay Latex Collection (TLC) features layers of a new slowrecovery latex that uses phase-change materials to regulate sleeping temperatures. The line takes flight with butterfly-themed ticking, marketing materials — and a showroom that “opens” to spotlight upper-end two-sided models in the line. Jamison is aiming to stand out in High Point with several ads and banners in the market. Gold Bond is also introducing new latex beds, including its first two-sided latex model. (Do I see a mini-trend here?) In addition, the producer is debuting one-sided beds with softer feels in its Comfort Collection and is showing lower profile models in its Sacro-Support Encased Coil line. Shifman, a high-end specialist that sells only to furniture stores, is celebrating classic designs with its Vintage Collection. Updated border designs, new fabrics and enhanced corner guards are among the new features incorporated in the line. Paramount Sleep is introducing an all-foam HD Super Duty Collection. As the name suggests, the beds are designed to ensure durability. The mattresses feature layers of memory foam, gel memory foam and latex and are backed with a warranty specifying a half-inch standard for body impressions. These new lines are definitely worth checking out in High Point. Many other mattress and sleep accessories lines will also be on display in High Point next week. There is enough bedding in High Point to keep a mattress shopper — and your humble mattress writer — busy for several days.

company planted them primarily for aesthetic reasons for the next generation of Ligna workers and management who will carry the company forward. Like other wood furniture manufacturers, Ligna is working hard to ensure the company’s success in the years and decades ahead. Yet it hasn’t been easy in a recessionary environment that has plagued the United States, its largest export market. Since the financial crisis in 2008, sales to the U.S. market have fallen 45%-50%, according to Susilo Alexander Hadinoto, director. In early August, the plant was running at about 50% capacity. “It is still very soft out there,” he said. “I can see some light ahead, and some hope at the end of the tunnel, but it is a matter of how strong we are.” To combat the downturn, the company is looking to do

some OEM work and hospitality furniture. In August, it was working at a fast pace to complete its first hotel project. “Hopefully that will help us fill up our capacity,” he said, adding that the company is still seeking the right OEM partners for residential furniture. Given the country’s large population and supply of plantation-grown hardwoods, he believes Indonesia is well positioned to capture future growth. But he admits there are challenges too. For one, he doesn’t believe the infrastructure is as good as in China. “The roads and ports, those things can be improved,” he said, noting that the government spends a relatively small part of its budget on infrastructure. “They are investing more compared to five years ago, but it is not enough to support the economy. Roads could be widened — it takes an hour to an hour and a half to get from my factory to the port.” While Ligna and some

That’s because goods shipped from Surabaya ports have to be routed to either Singapore or Hong Kong, where they are transferred to larger vessels, which can add several days to the shipping time compared with China, Singapore or even Vietnam, which have large port facilities. Hadinoto said it is also a challenge for Indonesian manufacturers to predict what types of styles will sell at a given point in time, and relies heavily on U.S. marketing arm Ligna U.S.A. for guidance. In early August, bedroom and dining room producer Iga Abadi in the Surabaya region further east was shipping about 50 to 60 containers per month, which is about half of its 120-container-per-month capacity. While it still gets a good amount of business from core U.S. customers such as A-America and Progressive, it too has been affected by the global economy. In August, its

Furniture/Today is presenting a three-part series on Indonesia’s furniture manufacturing industry. Associate Editor Thomas Russell visited the country a few weeks ago. X Sept. 24: Indonesia remains one of the largest exporters of furniture to the U.S. market. Visits to a number of factories show why it has become so important. X Oct. 1: U.S. companies including Furniture Brands International make a statement with their presence in Indonesia. Even the number of carvers was down to about 25, compared with as many as 100 to 150 in years past, figures based on the piece work available at a given time. On top of that, the company said it has faced higher materials and energy costs, which has in turn put pressure on profits. Officials said the company has kept these costs under control through a combination of layoffs, equipment purchases and regular maintenance on machines. As a result, plant officials said, they only have passed along small price increases since 2005, which they believe makes them more competitive. And they continue to

look for ways to bring higher value to their core product categories, ranging from added function to the use of higher quality veneers. Other companies are also being proactive as they look to secure growth opportunities as the economy rebounds. That includes bedroom producer Domusindo Perdana, which primarily sells through its U.S. marketing arm Modus Furniture. In August, the plant was running at about 20% less than its 150container-per-month capacity, according to officials at the Surabaya area facility. To combat the soft economy, the company has invested in its plant, including a 20% increase in building space on its 28-acre campus roughly five years ago. It also installed a roller conveyor system that eliminated the need to move product around on the factory floor via hand pallets. This reduced defects caused by handling by about 30%, officials said. In addition, the company has invested in other new equipment to improve its efficiencies, which has helped it maintain competitive price points on its bedrooms. Today, four piece sets are priced at $400-$500 FOB Surabaya, which officials said is a 1015% drop since 2008. “Every factory got hit since

These same countries, particularly China, Vietnam and Malaysia, continue to compete with Indonesia. With shipments of $12 billion in furniture to the United

States in 2011, China dwarfs its nearest Asian competitor, Vietnam, which had shipments of $1.7 billion in 2011, and Malaysia, which had shipments of $671.5 million, based on Furniture/Today research. Indonesia, by comparison, shipped $520.8 million, placing it at number eight on the list of top 10 importers, just behind Taiwan. Wood furniture, primarily bedroom, accounts for much of Indonesia’s activity. This is partly because Indonesia, unlike China, doesn’t have U.S. antidumping duties on the category. Vietnam has been

the primary beneficiary of this business since it also doesn’t have duties on bedroom. But Indonesia has secured some upper-middle to upper-end wood bedroom and dining room business from the likes of Bernhardt, Stanley, Hooker Furniture, Ethan Allen and Lexington Home Brands. Surabaya-area case goods manufacturer Katwara lists Hooker, Bernhardt, Lexington and Kincaid as some of its major U.S. customers. Yet, despite the strength of such accounts, times have been challenging in the last several years due to the soft economy. In 2008 and 2009, sales dropped 50%, but have rebounded 20-25% in each of the past two years and are up again this year, said Cendekia Candranegara, owner. “We have a lot of new samples and orders,” he said, adding that the plant is running at about 80% of its estimated 100-container-per-month capacity. After an expansion to be completed later this year, this will rise to 150 containers per month, with the addition of a new finishing line. With more orders, he also expects the plant to add a

second shift. While it gets most its wood primarily from Indonesia suppliers, Katwara, like other factories, imports some other materials such as hardware and MDF from other Asian countries, making it susceptible to price increases. “In the future, we will use more local materials,” Candranegara said. “That will help keep our costs competitive and our lead times too.” Surabaya area case goods producer Tjakrindo Mas names Bernhardt, Stanley and Lexington among its key customers. With one of the largest factories in Indonesia at 2.5 million square feet, it has room to grow with those and other customers. “The door is open,” said Kurnia Wan, export manager. “We also have land to grow. It depends on business.” But facing rising materials costs in the range of 20% alone in the past year — including goods sourced from countries like China, Malaysia and Thailand — it is challenged to come up with new ways to remain price competitive. MDF that is CARB Phase II compliant, he said, is 30%

more expensive than regular board. “Our problem is materials,” Wan said. The company already produces some of its own mixed media, including woven sea grass and metal accents. It also has 10 CNC machines and three finishing lines, making it one of the more automated facilities in the area. In the future, it plans to buy more high tech equipment, which officials said will further boost quality and efficiency. Integra is another big indoor residential case goods producer with one of the largest plants in Indonesia at more than 2 million square feet. The $100 million company also does some outdoor furniture and hospitality. Company executive Widjaja Karli said Integra hasn’t been affected as much as some other producers during the recession, due largely to the growth in its customer base, which includes Casana, Coaster, Palmetto Home, Lexington, American Woodcrafters, Rooms To Go, Pier One and Target.

Trade group Asmindo supports industry JAKARTA, Indonesia — Most furniture producing countries have a strong furniture manufacturers association, and Indonesia is no different. Its association is called the Indonesian Furniture Industry & Handicraft Assn., or Asmindo. Formed in 1988, it has more than 2,000 member companies, up from 1,200 about 10 years ago, said Sae Tangga Karim, executive director. Roughly three quarters of its members specialize in wood furniture and the rest are primarily in rattan. About 80% export to North America, Europe and elsewhere. Based in Jakarta, Asmindo also has 24 regional offices, seven of which are in central Java.

As a trade association, the group has its hands in many areas, ranging from lobbying on behalf of the industry to hosting the annual trade show, the International Furniture & Craft Fair Indonesia in Jakarta. As a lobbying organization, it acts as a liaison between industry and government, particularly on issues such as the implementation of national standards that will help companies ensure they are getting their woods from legal sources. The association also offers other services ranging from securing warehousing of raw materials to hosting seminars in topics such as design. One of its biggest tasks is organizing the annual IFFINA trade show. Held each March, the show featured nearly 400 exhibitors this year, up from 216 in 2008. It covers about 180,000 square feet of space at the Jakarta International Expo Kemayoran in Jakarta and last year attracted 3,109 international visitors from 105 countries, including the

U.S., and more than 3,300 local visitors. The association recently hired industry consultant and sourcing expert J. Jewett to represent it in the United States. In the coming months, Jewett will promote the Indonesia show at various furniture-related events. For the upcoming March 11-14 show, Jewett said, the association plans to offer free hotel stays and transportation to and from the show to the first 50 retailers that sign. They will have their choice of four five-star hotels in Jakarta, he said. For more information on Asmindo or the show, e-mail Jewett at JJ@StyleXdirect.com.

We managed to pick up new customers to avoid a drop in business.” He also believes Indonesia has an advantage in furniture production due to the availability of workers, wood supply and the stability of the currency. Let Us Show You the Benefits of Nationwide Furniture High Point Market • Plaza Suites Space I -538 (first floor next to England Furniture and the Retail Resource Center)

ince the October market is upon us, let me make the exhibitors angry. Folks, you spend thousands on elegant showrooms, but where is the excitement, product-wise? I look forward to going to markets and make a special effort to see the new showrooms. With a modestly better economy, many of the vendors are confident enough to upgrade or expand their showrooms. In my opinion, many showrooms have never looked better and some are truly Architectural Digest- worthy in their concepts. But as to the furniture itself, I do find some truly creative and different furniture, more so than in the shell-shocked depths of the recession, but I learn about these through friends at the market, sources like Ellen Gefen’s morning television show, or of course, the daily Furniture/Today issues. I always leave the market wondering what I missed. Recognizing that I am older than the Pyramids, I can assure you that before we had so many of our modern networking and communication sources, the companies offering major new collections — which cost a lot of money to develop — went to extremes to communicate it to the industry before market, creating real enthusiasm. Today, one of the few companies that creates a similar level of recognition is Lexington Home Brands, and this has been very successful for them. Speaking of Lexington, I remember when the World of Bob Timberlake collection was introduced in 1990 with one of the most elaborate and exciting displays ever. The result was a line waiting outside, and a showroom so full that you could not enter until someone left. Just recently, a friend wrote about the Maison & Objet market in Paris. Some showrooms were just room groupings but others were truly differentiated. One collection was shown on the original set of the futuristic movie “Prometheus.” Please do not invest hundreds of thousands in a new offering, put a nondescript name on it, and expect people to find it. Do your reps bring customers in? Of course. Do your pre-market emails to your existing customer list help? Of course, to those who still receive emails at that address and who open emails. But to make your investment really worthwhile and reach new customers, communicate and create some enthusiasm. Trust me, walking through a showroom and being told that this is a new oak bedroom called Fred is not memorable (unless your name is Fred). With some thought and marketing savvy you might create another industry legend like the original Louis Philippe by National/Mount Airy, Henredon’s Scene One, Pulaski’s Keepsakes, Century’s Chin Hua, Singer’s Paul Bunyan, Thomasville’s Hemingway, American Drew’s Cherry Grove, Ashley’s original Millennium, Fontana by Broyhill, Ethan Allen’s Radius and many others that will live forever in furniture history. Cambridge Mills commits to High Point Market By Thomas Russell HIGH POINT — Cambridge Mills, a U.S. manufacturer of solid wood bedroom furniture, said it has committed to the High Point Market by signing a five-year lease on a space it has occupied the last two markets. The 3,500-square-foot space is in G-582 of the International Home Furnishings Center. The lease it signed with building owner International Market Centers officially starts this month, said Michael Scarsella, Cambridge Mills director of marketing and sales. “The space is the perfect size and configuration to dis-

play our solid wood bedroom assortment, Scarsella said. “We have enjoyed working with IMC the past two markets and feel the location and partnership is a good fit for our model and growth plans.” The company also will be showing at the winter Las Vegas Market as part of the IMC’s Made in the USA Pavilion. “IMC did an excellent job with the Made in the USA Pavilion and we had an excellent show last winter,” Scarsella added. “We expect even better results come January.” At the Oct. 13-18 High Point Market, the company will showcase a new 12-piece solid cherry bedroom called

Fairmont Park. The updated traditional group is the company’s seventh bedroom since its launch in October 2010 in partnership with Harden Furniture. Its middle to uppermiddle-priced line is produced in Harden’s 500,000-squarefoot plant in McConnellsville, N.Y. Scarsella noted that in its first 20 months of existence, the company has partnered with nearly 200 retailers, a number it expects to double in the next 12 months. He added that the company also has benefited greatly from its relationship with high-end manufacturer Harden. “We have the luxury of tap-

ping into Harden’s vast experience of producing some of the most beautiful furniture in the world,” he said. “The result is we can offer a level of style that separates us from our closest competitors in our segment, especially when you consider Harden’s finish capabilities.” Cambridge Mills also is tapping into Harden’s experience with custom upholstery

by adding a new custom fabric and leather program of its own called Personal Choices. The program, which launches at the October market, will offer 24 fabrics and leathers to Cambridge Mills’ growing number of upholstered beds. The company already offers an array of wood finish options in its Color Choices program introduced last winter.

Imagine, Davis moving to larger H.P. space WEST POINT, Miss. — Imagine Home Furnishings upholstery and Davis Direct case goods are moving to a larger showroom for the fall High Point Market. The sister companies will show in space 100 of Center Point on Russell, moving from Center Point on Centennial. Imagine will introduce a new line of occasional chairs and a new line of upholstered beds during the fall market, which runs Oct. 13-18, according to Hunter Davis, CEO. “So much is changing for

us,” said Davis. “We have a new upholstery merchandiser who has given us 22 new upholstery groups, a new sales manager who is revamping our sales force, and we have seven new case goods groups on top of that. We needed more space, so we decided the move was necessary.” The company, formerly known as Davis International, recently hired industry veterans Lee Scott as head of sales and Davy Crockett to take charge of the upholstery line.

Ikea Canada to open in Winnipeg Nov. 28 Ikea’s U.S. store count will grow to 40 in 2014 with its plans for a second South Florida store and the just-announced plans for a Kansas City area store in Merriam, Kan.

X Ikea from p1 10,000 exclusive furniture, accents, cookware and other items, 50 room settings and three model home interiors as well as a supervised play area and a 450-seat restaurant. Joseph Roth, Ikea’s U.S. public affairs manager, said the retailer will be acquiring an 18-acre site that’s home to a shopping center, which it will demolish to prepare for the new store. A report by the Kansas City Star said the $73.5 million center opened four years ago and “has essentially been vacant since its completion.”

FT054i6 2

Roth also confirmed that Ikea’s Kansas store is expected to pull consumers from six states and eight metro areas in addition to Kansas City — Topeka and Wichita, Kan.; Omaha and Lincoln, Neb.; Tulsa, Okla.; Des Moines, Iowa; Springfield, Mo.; and northwest Arkansas. Ikea has plans for a second South Florida store also opening in the fall of 2014 in Miami, likely making Miami and Merriam U.S. stores No. 39 and 40, respectively. The move follows news last week from Ikea CEO Mikael Ohlsson about the company’s plans to accelerate expansion in the United States and other global markets.

“We look forward to growing our Midwestern U.S. presence with Ikea Merriam,” Mike Ward, Ikea U.S. president, said in a release. “The store would bring the already 60,000 Kansas City-area customers a store of their own and would introduce other consumers in Kansas, Missouri and beyond to the unique Ikea product selection and family-friendly shopping experience.” Ikea, which is in the process of rolling out solar energy installations atop nearly 89% of it s U.S. locations, said it also will evaluate the Merriam store for potential on-site solar or geothermal power generation.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Ikea Canada has set Nov. 28 for the grand opening for its new store here, which will also mark the first time the Swedish-owned home furnishings giant has expanded the 11unit Canadian chain in at least a decade. Over the past year, Ikea has opened two replacement stores in Canada, one in Ottawa and the other in Richmond, British Columbia. It also began a massive expansion of its store in the Montreal suburb of Saint Laurent in May. In a statement, Ikea said the Winnipeg store will cover 395,671 square feet and will feature 55 inspirational room settings and two full model homes. It will have a 650seat restaurant, 1,619 parking spots, 40 cash lanes and a 2,228-square-foot play area

for children. “My whole team is counting down the days until we welcome customers to Winnipeg’s first Ikea store,” store manager Stephen Bobko said. The store will anchor a regional power center called Seasons of Tuxedo at Kenaston Boulevard and Sterling Lyon Parkway, which will also feature a Lowe’s Canada home improvement warehouse and a Cabela’s outdoor store. Ikea is one of the partners in the development, which is expected to become a tourist attraction, bringing in visitors from western Canada and the adjoining U.S. states. Local media are reporting that its eventual attractions will include a 100-room hotel, a 16-screen movie theater and possibly an indoor water park.

Furniture factory orders in July up 4% from 2011 HIGH POINT — New factory orders in July were 4% above July 2011, and are up 4% year-to-date, according to the latest Smith Leonard survey of residential furniture manufacturers and distributors. The July increase came on the heels of a 3% increase in June. Ken Smith, managing

partner of the accounting and consulting firm, said the latest increases were in line with expectations, and he doesn’t believe that pattern will change in the near future. “From what we have gathered, we do not expect the August results to be significantly different than the last few months,” Smith wrote in

the firm’s monthly Furniture Insights newsletter. He said he’s encouraged by recent upticks in consumer confidence and the housing markets, but is concerned about gasoline prices. “We think we may see a bit more improvement after all the negative political stuff is gone and we have a clue what

Mattress Firm prices offering at $29.85 per share HOUSTON — Bedding retailer Mattress Firm said it has priced a secondary public offering of common stock at $29.85 per share. The stock offering won’t generate any new money for the company, but allows certain stockholders to sell their shares. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mattress Firm said 4.73 million shares would be sold by stockholders, and underwriters of the offering have a 30-day option to purchase an

X Havertys from p1 “The investments in our store presentation, distinctive products, technology to better serve our customers, and effective advertising with our ‘discover something you’ campaign are central to our competitive positioning,” Havertys President and CEO Clarence Smith said in a release. The retailer opened a store in Midland, Texas, in September and will open two more — a relocated store in McDonough, Ga., and a new store in Allen, Texas, in greater Dallas — in the next six weeks. Smith expressed optimism for the fourth quarter, noting that demand for home furnishings is typically good during the period “as consumers ready their homes for the holidays.” Havertys operates 121 stores in 17 Southern and Midwestern states.

Sealy shareholder says sale price too low By Larry Thomas NEW YORK — Sealy’s secondlargest shareholder has sent a strongly worded letter to the company’s board of directors saying it was “shocked” to learn the board had agreed to sell Sealy to Tempur-Pedic for $2.20 per share. Shareholder H Partners Management, which owns 16.6% of Sealy’s stock, contended that

the company is worth at least $7.50 per share, and repeated earlier criticism of the influence exerted by the investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, which owns about 44.5% of Sealy’s shares. “We were shocked to observe that this board, after selling shares to public shareholders in April 2006 at $16 per share, is contemplating a sale of the company at a meager $2.20 per

share. In effect, the KKR-dominated board is locking in an astounding 86% loss for public shareholders,” the letter read. H Partners said the board “should be deeply embarrassed” that Tempur-Pedic’s stock rose more than 15% after the acquisition was announced. The shareholder argued that the approximately $260 million increase in Tempur-Pedic’s market value is

equal to 80 cents per Sealy share, “implying an immediate value of at least $3 per Sealy share.” “We demand that the board fulfill its fiduciary duty to maximize value for all shareholders,” the letter read, arguing that the board should have considered alternative bids and should seek approval from Sealy shareholders who aren’t affiliated with KKR.

Dorel 2Q home furnishings sales grow 0.8% By Michael J. Knell MONTREAL — Dorel Inds.’ home furnishings segment posted respectable improvement in operating profit for the second quarter but was still running behind for the year to date, the consumer goods giant reported. Dorel said total revenue was $633.7 million, up 2.4% from $619 million for the same quarter last year. The company reports in U.S. dollars. Net income gained 32% to $30.3 million or 95 cents per share, compared with $23 million or 70 cents per share for the same quarter of 2011. Year-to-date revenue rose 2.3% to $1.25 billion with net

income for the six months increasing by 9.9% to $59.5 million or $1.85 per share. However, the home furnishings segment — which includes ready-to-assemble specialist Ameriwood, Cosco Home & Office and Altra Furniture, among others — had second quarter revenues of $127 million, a minor uptick of 0.8% from a year earlier. Operating profit was up 6.8% to $6.7 million. “For the quarter, home furnishings revenues increased slightly versus the prior year as sales to the Internet sales channel offset declines in the segment’s other major channels of distribution,” the company said in a statement. “Operating profit for the quarter increased

versus both the prior year and this year’s first quarter, as profitability was aided by a more stable cost environment. Partially offsetting this was a less profitable sales mix at several of the segment’s divisions.” For the first half of the year, home furnishings revenue was down 2.3% to $257.7 million. Operating profit was down 10.9% to $12.5 million. The company also announced it will double its quarterly dividend to 30 cents for all three major share classes. “Dorel performed well in our various business segments, despite a stubborn and unstable economy in the majority of our geographic markets. We have maintained the positive

momentum established in the final quarter of 2011 through a combination of strong marketing and judicious cost containment,” Martin Schwartz, president and CEO, said in a statement. Dorel’s juvenile segment — which produces car seats and a variety of other baby products — saw its sales advance 4.4% in the second quarter to $254.8 million. For the year, sales are up 2.1% to $524.3 million. Meanwhile, the company’s recreation and leisure division — which makes bicycles and sporting apparel — had sales growth of 1.1% for the quarter to $251.9 million and 5.2% for the year to date, to $472.8 million.
