GILDED GLAMOUR 24K Style Shines this Season BY TRACY BULLA
Emporium Home’s handhammered satin brass lamp references the delicate form of a tulip, accented with natural quartz points.
G
leaming gold elevated the season’s hottest looks to new heights of sophistication. Whether showcased on golden sculptural objects or glamorous gilded furniture, gold makes a stunning style statement that is both luxurious and elegant at once. Gold refreshes in combination with white and creates drama when mixed with black, while intense pairings of black, white and gold present a decadently rich aesthetic. Look for gold to come in the form of goldleafed finishes on wood or metal (often hammered for incredible texture), paillettes, lacquer and matte fabrics such as linen for a subtler look. Sculptural, organic lamps and decorative objects also reveal the Midas touch, noteworthy when betraying botanical references such as bamboo and flowers. Complementing the neutral appeal of gold, black and white are luxe materials such as Lucite, glass, shagreen, shell, horn, hair-on-hide and velvet. A plethora of animal prints, especially zebra, punctu-
ate the primarily neutral palette with decided drama. Overall, streamlined, elegant forms balance the richness of the finishes and materials with perfect ease. Neoclassical designs re-emerge, giving a nod to Greco-Roman antiquities. Again, the translation is pure and elegant with just enough edge to suit modern tastes. Reinterpreted Klismos chairs and classic urn designs were among the highlights at the show. Mid-century modern designs continued to prevail, showcasing an utterly refined sensibility. Delicately tapered legs set off exotic, beautifully grained wood that gives these designs a unique natural luster. Linen and hemp upholstery brings these designs up to date with an exquisitely subtle approach. Spa blue and citron pairings make for a fun, lighthearted color story, with bold sunflower yellow emerging on the horizon. Cutting-edge pops of neon are just beginning to surface, best shown as a brilliant highlight color.
Intense pairings of black, white and gold present a decadently rich aesthetic.
Gold leaf swaths Wildwood’s glazed ceramic bowl with an artisan effect.
Made of cast iron, the Cane nesting tables from Bliss Studio’s Lurgia Collection embody luxe sophistication in a champagne antiqued finish.

An ornamental border throws the mythical Greek griffin into relief in the neoclassical design from Design Legacy by Kelly O’Neal.
NEOCLASSIC Unearth antiquities of Greco-Roman origin with the latest crop of neoclassic designs for the home. An ode to ornamentation, these classically inclined designs bear traditional motifs such as waves, griffins, anthemions and more. Simple, standout forms – such as amphoras, Klismos chairs and urns – revive the grace and elegance of timeless design. BY TRACY BULLA
Crafted from hand-carved and hand-painted pine, the Griffin console embodies an elegant sense of antiquity heightened by a contrasting black top from Tara Shaw Maison.

Barclay Butera designed this glamorous zebra-patterned mirror, featuring wood wrapped in luxe printed hair-on-hide from Mirror Image Home.
ZEBRA
Always a design classic, zebra prints stripe the town sophisticated this season. Boasting sheer graphic appeal, zebra patterns add instant drama to settings both traditional and contemporary. While black and white versions set the standard, color-popped and metallic-infused takes offer fresh and dynamic appeal. A little zebra goes a long way in the design scheme, but a little more can be ever-so-endlessly chic. BY TRACY BULLA
Peninsula Home updates a classic wingchair with an eye-popping zebra pattern and nailhead trim. Based on an original artwork by Flora ScalamandrĂŠ, a stunning zebra print springs to life on the Scarf pillow from ScalamandrĂŠ Maison by Eastern Accents.

HORN
Horn makes a surprisingly strong statement this season, spot-on with an excess of natural style. Dramatic sculptural renditions offer the perfect balance between modern and organic, showcased spectacularly as scaled-up door and drawer pulls. Polished horn also resurfaces as both exquisite decorative detailing and in the creation of accent furniture, mirrors and lamps, lending subtle texture and depth through the naturally rich variation of the horn. CORAL
Dramatic coral pulls pop against a malachite and lacquer backdrop in the Dimitri secretary from Currey & Company, part of the Marjorie Skouras Collection.
Known as gems of the sea, precious coral makes an equally stunning statement in both jewelry and fashions for the home. While vivid red is the color of choice, look for white, beige, navy, orange and pink variations to come on strong as well when cast as ethereal creations from the sea. BY TRACY BULLA

Velvet appliques and beading traverse Callisto Home’s pillow with abstract geometric flair.
From Mise en Demeure for Yves Delorme, the lushly appointed velvet chair highlights a pop of neon piping.
VELVET
From a long history of being worn by the nobility, velvet today still implies the same sense of inherent luxury and richness. Whether the application is upholstery or soft goods, velvet is right on trend this season as it captures the undercurrent of elegant refinement. Infinitely sophisticated in understated neutrals, the real fun comes into play with jewel-bright velvets hued in dazzling emerald, saffron and magenta. BY TRACY BULLA
Tufted in emerald velvet, the Draper sofa from Kim Salmela Atelier deftly combines retro references with modern glamour.

Retailers discuss accessories, Millennials, e-commerce Home Accents Today market breakfast attended by furniture and online retailers, execs BY SUSAN DICKENSON AND ALEXA BOSCHINI
IN TODAY’S SMARTER, SAVVIER, MOBILE marketplace, home furnishings retailers are finding more opportunities than ever — in accessories. Furniture and online retailers shared a few opinions and strategies on that, and on subjects ranging from younger consumers to market shopping lists, during a roundtable breakfast hosted by Home Accents Today’s editors April 22 at the 2013 spring High Point Market. Sandow Media Marketing VP Connie Lineberry welcomed the retailers and buyers to the event, which was held at High Point’s String & Splinter Club in Historic Market Square. Editor in Chief Jenny Heinzen York followed Lineberry’s remarks with a presentation that shared highlights from recent Home Accents Today exclusive research reports.
Top 100 furniture stores and leading e-commerce sites were represented at the buyers’ breakfast during the High Point Market.
Rugs, mirrors, pillows are strong Notable in the research data, rugs look to be a hot category this year, with more than 15% of surveyed American consumers telling Home Accents Today they plan to buy a rug in 2013. The attending retailers agreed that rugs are going strong. “I’ve seen a bit of a turnaround with rugs recently,” said Lori Konzen, accessory buyer for Iowa’s Homemakers Furniture. “We’re moving away from luxury and focusing more on mid-level price points.” Homemakers Furniture customers are drawn to more casual, contemporary looks, and Konzen said she was finding more rugs in that style than at past markets. By offering rugs at mid-level price points, she said she hopes customers will feel that replacing the rug in a year or two is an affordable option. “Our rug department is about 5,000 square feet, but we show rugs under pretty much every group on our floor,” Konzen said. “The designers, every time I get a new collection in, they just soak them up. They can’t get enough of the new rugs, so that’s my big focus this market.” Buyers from Florida’s El Dorado Furniture were also shopping for rugs in High Point. The store’s rug business has increased by about 25% in the past three years. “In our case, (rugs) are very important,” said Pedro Capo, chief operating officer at El Dorado. “In addition to having them in stock at the warehouse, we have them in stock at the store for cash
82

The buying team from El Dorado Furniture also took part in the group discussion.
and carry.” Capo said he was seeing a lot of bold, bright colors in rugs while shopping the spring market, which should make for eye-catching merchandising in the store. El Dorado displays its rugs on the floor, on swing racks and on the walls to give customers a complete look at the design. El Dorado was also seeking contemporary accent chairs. “The challenge is trying to find something that says ‘wow,’” Capo said. Wall décor is an in-demand category among brick-and-mortar and e-commerce alike, according to the group who attended the breakfast. Sarah Kim, category manager of accent furniture and décor for Wayfair, said wall art and mirrors are a growing cat-
egory for the e-tailer. For Gallery Furniture, designer, merchandiser and accessories buyer Micheal Burnes said floor mirrors are a top seller in accessories. “We do a tremendous amount of floor mirrors at all price points, and they sell,” he said. Sarah Crockard, a designer and merchandiser at Gallery, said many customers are also looking for smaller, decorative mirrors. “On Pinterest, the message they’re seeing is ‘Don’t just use the builders’ standard, use these decorative ones,’ so that’s something we’re focusing on — little ones we show in multiple.” Several of the retailers agreed that top-of-bed options at mid-level price points are a void in the marketplace. Burnes and Susan Black, corporate accessory buyer for Havertys, said finding textiles and top of bed is typically the most challenging part of shopping the market for their stores. “You get the lower end or the luxury,” Burnes said. “I searched four or five markets trying to find something.” While top-of-bed isn’t always a major seller for full-line furniture stores, Black said it’s a critical merchandising tool. Attractive bedding draws customers to a vignette, and then they notice the bed itself. Though top-of-bed is a challenge, One Kings Lane cofounder and Chief Merchandising Officer Susan Feldman said decorative pillows are a growing category. “When we got into the business, it was hard to find good decorative pillows. People today think of their homes as a form of self-expression and change it up more often. Pillows are an easy way to update a room, so I think that’s why we sell a lot of them.” Homemakers Furniture showcases pillows from vendors such as Surya, Nourison and Rizzy Home in several floor-to-ceiling wall displays, Konzen said. “We’ve done really well with throw pillows lately. Our furniture is a lot of brown, a lot of taupe. The pillows brighten it up.”
Thinking younger Retailers who attended the breakfast also discussed strategies for addressing the changing consumer. According to Home Accents Today’s research, Millennials (age 18 to 36) regularly shop for home furnishings at lifestyle furniture stores, second-hand outlets and online more than other retail channels. To attract more Millennial customers, Badcock Vice President of Merchandising for Accessories Cathy

Allen said Badcock is trying to infuse the lifestyle mentality into its full-line furniture stores. “At Badcock we’re hiring younger buyers,” she said. At Gallery Furniture, part of merchandiser Jerome McLemore’s job is updating the store’s Pinterest page, a social medium the retailers in attendance agreed is becoming increasingly important for the home furnishings industry. Gallery Furniture’s Pinterest page features 43 boards showcasing color trends, styles, materials and more, and has attracted more than 1,100 followers. The Houston-based company brought 19 people to High Point, including a videographer and social media team who shared product trends and documented the buying trip on the company’s website and social media platforms. Gallery Furniture Social Media Director Billie Van Slyke said the retailer is also shifting its advertising to include more “soft-sell” vignettes featuring eye-catching pieces to capture the young consumer’s attention. “We just present it differently,” she said. “If they’re interested, they’ll go to the website, see if they like something, come in and buy it. But they’re going to definitely do more research.” Konzen said Homemakers Furniture is also selecting more youthful accessories for its ads. “We’re doing a lot of social media, Twitter is working for us and we’re running ads in more youthful magazines that tap into the social scene,” Konzen said. Havertys is well into year two of a successful accessories revamp, led by Black. The furniture retail chain last year launched a brand repositioning campaign that includes its humorous “meet the parents” and “speed dating” commercials, which put more of the spotlight on the consumer instead of the product. “We are using accessories to establish ourselves as more of a style-conscious, design-oriented business and really leveraging it to pull in a new customer,” Black said, a sentiment echoed by several of the other retailers, some of whom now have a dedicated social media team staffed with creative young women who are “enamored with accessories.” Feldman and One Kings Lane Merchandising Vice President Day Kornbluth described the team behind their online private sale site as a group of enthusiasts who are “madly passionate about the category and product,” and talented buyers who are empowered to “do the heavy lifting – find fantastic product, vet it, merchandise it and present it to the consumer.”
Accessories drive traffic, grow tickets Heinzen York also shared highlights from a recent Home Accents Today/Apartment Therapy consumer survey which implies that while furniture is more of an “every seven years” purchase for consumers, accessories provide an opportunity to keep customers coming back. To drive that end of the business, Burnes said it’s important to keep the accessories turning. “Keeping the accessories fresh and new gets everybody excited about it — the salespeople and, in turn, the customers,” he said. 84

lamp, etc., suddenly it’s picture-perfect and they forget about the price.” Capo said El Dorado has had success by sending out designers to decorate a customers’ house with accessories on approval to coordinate with the furniture that they just bought. He said that service nearly guarantees a 100% close rate on those accessories; once the customers see them correctly “merchandised” into their homes, they don’t want them to go back to the store.
Online inspiration
Representatives from Gallery Furniture, Havertys, Badcock and One Kings Lane share insights with one another during the Home Accents Today breakfast.
The furniture retailers also discussed the challenge, and the importance, of getting salespeople and customers to see accessories as more than just a prop or merchandising tool — recognizing a decorative pillow that is sold separately as opposed to being part of the sofa it’s sitting on. “Our furniture salespeople are strictly commission, and we were having a bit of a hard time getting them to focus on the accessory category,” said one retailer. “So we hired an accessories staff, they receive an hourly wage plus commission, and they’re really focused on that experience. Now they have a client list — people come to them repeatedly seeking advice and help with specific decorating issues, and when we get new product, they’ll call the customers. It’s a great one-on-one working relationship.” Gallery Furniture offers a free accessories program. “If you purchase $4,000 or more in furniture, you get 20% back in free accessories, and that turns them really quickly,” Burnes said. Badcock has a similar program, added Allen, in which customers can earn credit for free accessories when they buy a certain dollar amount of furniture. It’s a promotion that several of the retailers use, they say, because it works on several levels — by growing the ticket, building repeat traffic and generating customer loyalty. “A lot of people, after buying a room of furniture, become pretty exhausted, so they’ll come back later with the accessories credit and end up spending more money,” Crockard said. “Once they start to focus on accessories, and putting things with this sofa, that
The breakfast, attended by retailers from the worlds of both brick-and-mortar and e-commerce, also discussed how the Internet is changing the way consumers shop. “We launch new product on our website every day,” Feldman said. “We look at it as we sell to our customer twice – once when they come to the site and make a purchase and once when they receive the package.” Feldman said online home décor resources today have evolved from “e-commerce 1.0” when shoppers typed a product into a search box and were met with a barrage of possibilities. Sites like One Kings Lane still offer quantity, she said, but place the highest importance on quality, thanks to a team that is passionate and enthusiastic about home furnishings. Feldman said she thinks if brick-and-mortar stores embrace e-commerce, it can actually be helpful to their business – some customers may not want to buy a sofa online without testing it in person, so while seeing a product online inspires them, they may turn to a brick-and-mortar retailer to make the actual purchase. “If you’re working with vendors the online retailers are working with, consider partnering with them,” Feldman suggested. “Because we know that when we run a brand on our site, there’s an average of a 500% lift to that vendor’s website that day. So that means the people who don’t want to buy it on One Kings Lane, those that want to go touch it and sit in it, are going to look for the dealers on the vendor’s website.” Burnes said Gallery Furniture is embracing that mentality, with the store’s social media efforts and revamped website its “100% focus” right now. “(Younger consumers) do their research,” Gallery’s Crockard added. “They’ll come in and show you, ‘I found this and this online. What do you have that’s similar?’” Badcock’s Allen said furniture stores’ advantage is in their customer relationships. “You (online retailers) inspire our customers to do more in their homes and then, if we’ve done our job in developing a relationship with that customer, they’ll come to us hopefully rather than shop online.” “We can help people be inspired; hopefully they’ll shop more on our site, but it’s good for everybody,” Feldman said. “It’s really about getting people excited about fixing up their homes. It always starts with a pillow, then all of a sudden the lamp doesn’t look right, the room needs a new rug. I think whatever we can all do collectively for the industry … is good for everybody.”

Majestic Mirror debuts first collection of wall art BY JENNY HEINZEN YORK
MAJESTIC MIRROR & FRAME HAS EXPANDED beyond its mirror collections to offer a line of threedimensional wall art. “We just felt like it was a natural progression for our line to offer for our existing customers a new product,” said company president Josh Mandel. “They are all dimensional – we’re not doing anything along the lines of prints behind glass. It’s dimensional with mixed media, including molded glass, bent metal and more.” The new line comprises 75 designs. The sizes range from a 16-inch square to a 60x80-inch showcase piece. Retail prices range from $79 to $299. “We found a factory that can do unique artwork – things you don’t see in the marketplace,” said Stephen Becker, vice president of sales. “And it helps out a lot of the independent dealers where they can buy mirrors and art from us, rather than having to use multiple vendors.” “And also, the larger customers that are buying direct containers can buy mixed containers now,” Mandel added.
Majestic’s new wall décor offerings include this threedimensional, mixed-media design, measuring 40x40 inches.
He called the response at market “exceptional,” and said it was hard to identify any best-sellers because many of the pieces were so well-received. “It was great to hear – the customers all liked different things and they loved the art pieces,” he said. “It really showed that we are in the mirror and art business now.” The move also attracted new customers to the showroom, including “more than a handful” of large accounts and many designers and independents, Becker said. “People were drawn in by the wow factor. This was our launch to show that we’re in the art business now, and people were really excited – we had people come in just to see the art.” Going forward, the company plans to continue to introduce wall art designs, with the next major launch slated for the fall High Point show. “Business is really good for us, so it’s allowed us to be in growth mode,” Becker said, adding that the company hopes to expand its High Point showroom to better showcase the new lines, as well as the mirrors that Majestic has long been known for. “Not only are we growing in terms of new product, we’re going to be growing into a new space. We’re going to be doing a lot of new things.”
High Point University students to showcase rugs in October BY THOMAS LESTER
THE HIGH POINT MARKET in October will serve as the introduction to the rug world for High Point University students Ally Catherine Trencry, Jourdan Sullivan, Rebecca Rowan, Susannah Murphy and Kayla Kucerik. In November 2012, rug expert Abu-Bakr Khan visited their textiles class for a presentation. At one point, Khan told the class if anybody was interested in having a rug made, he would be happy to look at designs. Rowan, Murphy, Trencry and Sullivan teamed up to create a design, while Kucerik designed one on her own. After seeing their designs, Khan had wool and silk rugs made in Nepal. This fall, he will provide the opportunity to showcase the students’ creative skills for the who’s who of the rug industry. The students will have their finished rugs on display at Abu Rugs & Home in Jamestown, N.C., during the October market. “My goal for them to do that is this could be put in front of a lot of businesspeople before the next market. They can immediately get some recognition for their skills,” Khan said. “Not many people can put their minds together and come up with an idea like this without training. Imagine if this rough diamond is polished, how sharp and how much light it can deliver to the design business, especially textiles.” The rug designed by the four students was inspired by a rug inside Khan’s store. At the four corners of the rug are the monogrammed initials of the students. The medallion, which is adorned with roses and acorns, also features the stylized initials of HPU Presi98

dent Nido Qubein. Rowan said she was most nervous when Khan examined the design. “We put it in front of him and he was silent, looking at this design. We thought he hated it and then he looked up, looked us in the eye and told us it was beautiful and he was amazed we had designed it,” she said. “It was such an aweinspiring moment to have somebody who is so esteemed in the business to tell us it’s good.” Kucerik’s design was inspired by a piece of clothing and is a play on repetition with a curve shape repeating over a number of elevations, textures and colors. “In my head, I saw it and knew how it was going

to be raised,” she said, looking at the finished product in Khan’s showroom. “It was a completely different experience seeing it and touching it. This is my vision, come to life.” Both rugs will be donated to High Point University.

The Art Highway debuts with exclusive Scott Jacobs series BY SUSAN DICKENSON
INDUSTRY VETERAN RENA SOMERVILLE launched her new wall décor resource, The Art Highway, in High Point. The company debuted with a new showroom in Historic Market Square and featured exclusive work by artist Scott Jacobs, along with a curated collection of vintage botanicals, landscapes, original illustrations, and industrial and transportationthemed images from well-known and emerging artists. Known for his photo-realistic style of painting, Scott Jacobs has been officially licensed with HarleyDavidson Motor Company for more than 20 years. His original and limited-edition works have garnered the attention of The Vintage Museum, Peterson Museum, Milwaukee Public Museum and National Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. In honor of the High Point launch, a local Harley-Davidson dealer loaned a vehicle for display in the showroom. Somerville, The Art Highway’s president and CEO, said she first became aware of Jacobs while
watching him on an episode of Secret Millionaire. “I was just so impressed with him and his character but was unfamiliar with his work as an artist,” she said. “On the show, he was such a great human being that I knew he must also be great at expressing his talent. I found his website and gave his agent a call, and here we are.” The Art Highway has mounted Jacobs’ giclees, rendered in metallic ink on metallic archival paper, in automobile-finished frames that can be polished and touched up with car wax. Somerville said the series has never been offered at retail until now. Estimated retail range is $450 to $750. Somerville, an industry consultant and former national sales manager for Art Evolution and European Sources Direct, founded The Art Highway in January 2012. Last July, Somerville was in a serious car accident from which she continues to recover physically, but which did not stop the new company from moving forward. She credits the company’s successful launch to the support of a strong sales team

Nourison partners with Kathy Ireland BY THOMAS LESTER
KATHY IRELAND IS BRINGING HER sense of style to Nourison. Saddle Brook, N.J.-based Nourison announced a licensing agreement with Kathy Ireland Worldwide at market. Ireland said Nourison stood out when she searched for a rug collection partner. “They’re the only company we considered. Many fashion-forward companies wanted to work with us,” Ireland told Home Accents Today. This licensing agreement includes the brands Kathy Ireland Home, as well as Kathy Ireland Designs Jardin by Nicholas Walker, Kathy Ireland Designs Acafe Society by Chef Andres and Kathleen Marie. In addition, Nourison will be creating decorative accessories under this agreement. 100

“Nourison is thrilled to be partnering with such an exciting leader in the home furnishings industry,” said Alex Peykar, principal of Nourison, in a press release. “She is a true expert in this field. We are confident that together, Nourison and Kathy Ireland will create a dynamic, fashion forward and highly successful duo of home design.” Thomas Itty, marketing director for Nourison, said both parties were ready to go with the line launch. “There was some interest on both sides. This thing came together pretty quickly in the past couple of weeks,” Itty said. “We put together these collections pretty quickly. At this point, we’re getting it off the ground. By sometime toward the end of the year, it should be a fullblown collection.” The rugs retail at $299 to $399 for a 5x8.

Butler Specialty added accessories to its lineup.
Butler Specialty adds accessory line BY JENNY HEINZEN YORK
ACCENT FURNITURE SPECIALIST Butler Specialty made its first foray into the accessory business during the spring market, in addition to extensive new additions to its furniture offerings. Butler has over the past few market seasons expanded its product line significantly beyond its core cherry traditional pieces that it has produced since its founding in the 1930s. “We are really focusing on new product directions,” said David Bergman, president. “We were so heavily into cherry that there was a huge void in our offerings,” he added, noting that now that Butler is working with 45 different factories overseas, it has all sorts of abilities and capacity to make products of different styles and materials. The Hors D’Ouevres accessory line includes more than 80 pieces. “If somebody wants it, we can find someone to do it,” he said. “That will be the engine of our growth for years to come. It’s an exciting time for us.”

New line launches highlight for Surya BY THOMAS LESTER
SURYA DEBUTED A SERIES OF NEW LICENSED rug and home décor lines during the April High Point Market, including collections with fashion designer Peter Som, French interior designer Florence de Dampierre, and the brand for the late Australian designer Florence Broadhurst. “For us, bringing in design collaborations is a big part of our story. We have about seven or eight designers on staff constantly looking at new trends and reinterpreting them into new products, but we feel we need to bring different perspectives to the Surya story,” said Jason Moody, who handles creative strategy and marketing for Surya. “Working with other designers is a great way to do that.” A Paris native, de Dampierre’s aesthetic is heavily influenced by French design and cultural reference points, according to a Surya press release. Her expertise as a historian contributes to her Surya rug collection, which offers a simplified twist on classic French design. “She is an amazing designer and an interesting person. She’s a master of classic Parisian style — French style,” Moody said. “She does a really nice job with this new collection of tufted pieces she’s been working

on to interpret those elements of classic French style into today’s living space.” Fashion designer Som has artfully translated key elements of his popular apparel collections into a series of rug designs. “We, personally, feel that fashion is a huge inspiration — probably one of the largest — for home décor. It seemed like a natural fit to work with Peter on the collection,” Moody said. “He’s really been able to partner with our team to put together designs that are interpretations of things he’s done on the runway.” Broadhurst was best known for her wall coverings, with work that was considered ground-breaking decades ago. Her designs have been re-envisioned in a line of decorative pillows that are both contemporary and timeless, Moody said. “We worked with the Florence Broadhurst brand closely to delve into her archive of patterns and we put together some new pillow designs we’re excited about,” Moody said. “Looking through her archive, her stuff feels so current. To find designers with that unique vision, it feels very modern but it’s very timeless.” Prior to market, Surya announced its partnership with designer Kate Spain. Her collection of rugs and pillows was also unveiled during the April market.
Safavieh unveils Custom Rug program PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.-BASED Safavieh unveiled its Custom Rug program during the spring High Point Market. The program draws from the six designer-licensed programs under the Safavieh Couture umbrella: Martha Stewart, Thomas O’Brien, Suzanne Kasler, Thom Filicia, Jamie Drake and David Easton. “In those Safavieh Couture collections, we have running program rugs from each designer. Now, any of those patterns are going to be available to interior designers to custom size and custom color,” said Carol Tisch, director of marketing for Safavieh. “All they have to do is give us paint chips or fabric swatches. We have the pom box for them to work with. We have about 200 colors that they can work with here, but we can also match any color.” The rugs are mostly Nepalese and either 100% wool or a blend of wool and silk, Tisch said. In addition, the program also offers designers custom sizes on any of its current hand-knotted wool Oriental rug collections. Tisch said once an order is placed, the custom rugs will be available in four months. Arash Yaraghi, principal, said that the program will be under the sales management of John Vlahopoulos, who specialized in designer rugs prior to joining Safavieh in 2011 as senior sales executive. “Interior designers in the residential and hospitality fields are an important sales focus for Safavieh and we have crafted our custom rug program to give them exclusive product that is easy to create,” Yaraghi said in a press release. “We are launching at High Point because the volume of appointments with designers.” — Thomas Lester

Global Views’ High Point showroom played host to the market dinner party.
Global Views, Zinc Door host market dinner for designers, writers GLOBAL VIEWS AND ONLINE retailer Zinc Door partnered during the High Point Market to host an exclusive dinner party for interior designers, editors and bloggers. According to a press release from Zinc Door and sister site Layla Grace, company founders Wendy Estes and Tiffany Harris decided that they wanted to do something special to say thank you to the media partners, bloggers and designers they work with throughout the year. Partnering with Global Views for the event only made sense, the two said in remarks during the party, because Zinc Door shares the classic but
contemporary vibe that Global Views espouses in its wholesale collections. “We believe it’s the friendships we create in business that push us all forward. It truly is the most enjoyable part of our business,” the release stated. “We value those who support Layla Grayce and Zinc Door and this event was our way of expressing gratitude for our partnerships.” The evening featured a trend presentation by Global Views’ Creative Director Rick Janecek, followed by dinner in the Global Views showroom in the IHFC.
