Mayhem in the Middle Middle-market retailers coming to market this week have shopping lists based on an increasingly competitive segment of the marketplace

ATLANTA — Home Source International is bowing two new licensed collections during the New York Home Fashions Market: Coca-Cola beach towels and Kennebunk Home bedding. In recent markets, Home Source has worked with Conde Nast to produce over 20 designs of beach towels featuring themes from magazines such as Gourmet, The New Yorker, Madamoiselle and Home and Garden. “The Conde Nast program registered so well, it led to a license with Coke,” said Home Source ceo Keith Soorgeloos. The new Coca-Cola beach towels are 100% cotton and 450 GSM. The size is 40 inches by 70 inches, and the towels also feature a colorful reverse yarn-dye back. “Home Source International is honored to be associated with Coca-Cola as the licensor for branded Coca-Cola beach towels” Sorgeloos said. “It is the perfect fit for two key Atlanta-based companies to provide an exciting quality product to the market, thus allowing the many Coca-Cola consumers the opportunity to further enhance their collection of Coca-Cola products.” Home Source has also been working with Kennebunk Home, which specializes in blankets and throws, licensing the brand in four key franchises: MicroCotton, Egyptian, Supima and Bamboo. “We are the licensee to produce and sell bedding — top of bed,

NEW YORK — As the home textiles industry gathers here this week for market, it finds itself in yet another counterintuitive situation: While the consuming public becomes increasingly polarized into the Haves and the Have-nots, more and more of the retailers in the space are focusing on those in the middle: The Have-somes. The battle for the middle of the market is heating up as never before, with stores aggressively courting the shopper who wants more than the bottom of the market but can’t afford the top.

OPINIONTodaY Make New Friends But Keep the Old

O

NE OF T HE most remarkable aspects of the last New York Home Fashions Market was the pronounced pivot away from the Boomer customer toward the Millennials. I wonder if this week we might see some retrench-

ment. I’m not expecting a comeback of capital-T “Traditional” so much as attempts to reinterpret the form. One supplier told me last week her company’s customers have been asking: “Where has traditional gone? Who is that customer today?” Only a couple of hours earlier, I had been listening to JCPenney evp/cfo Ken Hannah adEDITOR-IN-CHIEF dress a Bank of America Merrill Lynch consumer conference. He acknowledged that JCP had shifted its design sensibility too far too fast to appeal to new (read Millennial) consumers. It turns out the core Penney shopper still wants full-length khakis, knee-length shorts and nofrills St. John’s Bay casual wear. And certainly not every Millennial in the land responds to eye-popping color and overscaled geometrics. So what might a reimagined take on traditional look like? I would expect there will be a whole lot less of the ornamentation (fringe, bullion and what-not) that defined the style in the early years of the 21st Century. When it comes to jacquard, I’d bet (and hope) the weaves are executed in a manner that doesn’t replicate the suffocating upholstery fabrics of a decade ago. I would imagine “texture without weight” might be the byword here. The pursuit of Millennials has resurrected print to some degree, and I see no reason why this can’t be employed in the service of creating a modern approach to traditional. All that said, I still expect to see a lot of product directed toward Generation Y during market week. And that’s fine. The torch is being passed. But it appears the hand-off may not be proceeding as rapidly as expected. HTT

New Blood, Old Sweat & the Usual Tears

S

O, A S S U M I NG YOU ’ V E made it through another season (and sadly, some of our friends have not), you’re back in beautiful downtown textilesland for New York market week. As usual, there is the look of familiarity to much of what will go on this week. That’s just the nature of the beast. But there also some new twists Warren are and turns this time around Shoulberg and while we’re not talking crazy, stupid here, you may PUBLISHER/ EDITORIAL DIRECTOR need to pay attention a little more than usual. New Blood: If you’re one of those vendors focused on your big six or eight customers and not too concerned with attracting new accounts, perhaps you need a shovel to unbury your head from the sand. If you ever needed an object lesson in the dangers of putting too many textiles eggs in one basket, hop on a plane for Plano and see the trail of tears of vendors who have watched their business with the retailer disintegrate over the past year. That’s why you need to be looking for new blood. Did you know a major online retailer of apparel and accessories is coming to market to expand its home textiles business? Did you know the largest furniture retailer in the country is adding decorative bedding to its assortments? Did you know a major consumer electronics chain is adding mattresses and will need topof-the-bed for its floor displays and to sell on a

drop-ship basis? Don’t fall into the same old-same old trap, whether you’re a supplier or a retailer. It can be deadly. Old Sweat: The business of getting sheets and towels from CAD computer screens to people’s bedrooms and bathrooms remains an arduous journey and that’s not going to change. Sure, some of the steps in the process change — country of origin, ordering process, fulfilment — but the fundamental things still apply. You need to have excellent supply chain management processes, good cash flow and some smarts to make the whole thing work. That’s the same as it ever was. It’s why you do indeed need to sweat the details. The Usual Tears: While cotton prices have stayed pretty stable since the Great Cotton Crisis of ’10-11, the same can’t be said for yarn prices. Maybe it’s those pesky Chinese trying to control the market, maybe it’s a shortage of good quality cotton, maybe it’s politics in Asia Minor — maybe corn and soy are really the bad guys here — but whatever the reason, some tears are being shed over how rising yarn costs are impacting product. And unlike raw cotton, yarn impacts all fiber constructions. There will no doubt be a few less dry eyes on both sides of the buying equation this week, that’s for sure. While many baby boomers think it was David Clayton Thomas who came up with this whole Blood, Sweat & Tears thing, it was in fact Winston Churchill. By the way, in his original quote, there was a fourth element he spoke about: “toil.” Toil away this week. HTT

It’s just right.

Presenting a new pillow with DACRON Dreamessence fiberfill. ®

In the land of pillows, buyer and consumers have had to bear the weight of an uncomfortable market with just two options — micro denier pillows that don’t last the test of time or expensive down. But no longer. Now there is a luxurious and lasting option at an affordable price for your customers. Pillows with DACRON® Dreamessence™ fiberfill use unique fine denier fibers to maintain the shape and down-like softness you’ve always dreamt about, without the imposing price tag. recently released the Pantone View home + interiors 2014 trend forecast featuring nine key color and design themes for home furnishings and interior design for next year. The announcement was made by Pantone during the International Home & Housewares Show here at the company’s ColorWatch Display in the Hall of Global Innovation. “Consumers are becoming increasingly color savvy and color aware,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “With consumers seeking distinctive styling and considerable substance more than ever before, it is critical that retailers and designers be aware of future color trends.” The nine palettes for 2014 are: Techno Color, Physicality, Sculpted Simplicity, Fluidity, Collage, Intimacy, Moda, Tribal Threads and Eccentricities. Pantone offered a description of each of these colors. • Innovative Techno Color “acknowledges the advancement of technology — how it is impacting the world of design and expanding the color universe through a melding of both vibrant and deep hues, frequently executed in refl ective surfaces.” A range of shades, including a multifaceted emerald, an exuberant orange, a turquoise-like blue and a strong purple, plus true blue, jet black and dark citron, “are intertwined in intriguingly inven-

tive color combinations.” • Physicality speaks to the colors of power and energy counterbalanced by the presence of hues that express the necessity for introspection and calmness. “The stamina of forged iron, satellite gray, antique moss and gothic olive are interplayed with the healing shades of herbal lavender, grayed grape, rosy brown and a quieting, ephemeral foggy gray.” • Sculpted Simplicity “recognizes how important shape, form and structure are to the end product and/or environment. The colors are unassuming and do not take center stage. The sophisticated tones elegantly harmonize with distinctively nuanced undertones,” and include travertine, anthracite, blanc de blanc and twilight mauve, supported by an anodized brown, ethereal gray and a suggestion of silver. • Fluidity is the palette that “understands the inevitable human need for life-sustaining cool water tones, rendered largely in dazzling blues and blue-greens.” These cooling hues include absinthe green, violet tulle, blazing Samoan sun, dewberry purple and two orange-coral tones. • Collage is “a gathering place for found objects that are well worn and somewhat nostalgic — a charming mélange of artfully constructed designs that demonstrate ingenuity and resourcefulness.” Tea rose, deep reddish rhubarb, warm pumpkin spice and cozy sheepskin,

are refreshed with margarita green, provincial blue and cascading tones of aqua and teal make up this grouping. • Intimacy “implies a certain affinity and relationship expressed in tints and tones that are inviting in nature and softly tactile — closely connected, yet subtly different, a happy marriage of adaptable warm, cool and neutral tones.” The palette includes gardenia white, lotus blossom pink, rose cloud, fawn and café crème, while pale lavenders and opal gray. • Moda speaks of “the drama of high fashion when translated into interiors ... red dahlia interacts with blackberry cordial and wood violet, all accented by a yellowed amber green. Corsican blue meets with magenta haze and an expressive linden green, while rich gold waits in the wings for the appropriate moment to add a glimmering finale to any of the combinations.” • Tribal Threads are “as varied as the tribal diversity they represent, yet they construct a universal linkage of artistic appreciation rooted in personal expression.” Included are neutrals, such as bleached sand and kangaroo brown, burnt orange, goblin blue, curry, peppercorn, and a rose-dusted cedar shade. • Eccentricities is “tongue-incheek in attitude with color juxtapositions that are highly original and cleverly conceived in evocative combinations.” Examples here include lemon zest, nectarine, skydiver blue, Fudgesickle, strawberry ice. Carpenter and Sleepbetter.org Release New Research R ICHMOND , VA . – Sleep prod-

ucts manufacturer Carpenter Co. and its Sleepbetter.org consumer information site recently launched a multichannel messaging campaign to share the results of its research about the impact of daylight savings time. According to the SleepBetter. org Lost-Hour Economic Index, released a few days ahead of the March 10 switch to DST, moving the clock ahead one hour each spring results in nearly half a billion dollars ($434 million) in total losses on the U.S. economy. The index was broken down into more than 360 metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) in order to localize its impact — from the top market, New York, N.Y., down to the smallest MSA, Carson City, Nev. SleepBetter.org launched an interactive landing page that

allows visitors to view the cost of DST down to the city level. The site includes a searchable database, sleep tips to combat the effects of the lost hour of sleep and an interactive heat map which plots the per-capita costs of DST from red to blue across America’s metropolitan areas at www.sleepbetter.org/lost-hour/. The outreach also featured a companion engagement contest on the SleepBetter Facebook page, www.Facebook.com/ SleepBetter. The contest asked new and existing Facebook fans to share the effects of losing an hour of sleep in their lives for a chance to win a Carpenter Co. and SleepBetter state-of-the- art ErgoSmart line of toppers and pillows. SleepBetter also broadcast the results of the study to national, regional, and local media.

“Every year most of the U.S. voluntarily foregoes an hour of sleep as we spring forward into daylight saving time, and the surprising findings of the LostHour Economic Index reinforce the key message of our multiyear campaign to educate Americans about the importance of sleeping better — lost sleep has a cost,” said Dan Schecter, senior vp of consumer products at Carpenter Co. and creator of SleepBetter.org. “As various academic studies have shown, that missing hour of sleep has both physiological and psychological effects – effects that can lead to an increase in workplace injury, cyberloafing and even heart attacks, and a relatively small investment sleep can pay huge dividends in health, productivity and wellbeing,” he added. C OMMERCE , C ALIF. —

Building on the introduction of the “Austin Horn Classics” brand last year, Pacific Coast Home Furnishings, is introducing a new sub-brand to the Austin Horn collection during New York Home Fashions Market. Austin Horn “In Vogue” will be the new brand covering four areas: casual classics, better fashion for today, runway fashion, and “what is going on now.” The aim is to make it easier to identify each lifestyle category. The legacy Austin Horn Collection is known for opulent looks with heavy embellishments. “I have always believed that there is an intimacy to something that is custom made by hand. There is that difference you feel and not just see,” said Sam Samani, chief merchandising officer for Pacific Coast Home Furnishings, parent company for Austin Horn Brand. All Austin Horn Collection, Austin Horn Classics, and Austin Horn “In Vogue” products will continue to be made domestically in California. With improved economy, increase in the confidence and buying power of retailers, and increased costs of production in countries such as China, “the field is getting more and more exciting for domestic manufacturing,” said Samani. “We will be producing more and more in the U.S. and rely on overseas less if not needed.” He credited PCHF president Perry Banafsh for not giving up domestic manufacturing in the

Mera International Returns to New York Market WOODBRIDGE, ONTARIO — After more than a decade away to refocus on its home Canadian market, longtime table linens house Mera International Ltd. is returning to the New York Home Fashions Market to find a new niche for itself in the United States. Company founder and owner Effie Gialedakis, who established Mera in 1990 soon after graduating from college with a degree in international business, told HTT she will be showing from a temporary space at showroom building 7 West 34th Street, in suite 1015. Her line will span a range of table linens styles to serve discounters through high-end shops, she said. Examples range from signature cutwork varieties through faux silks and embroidered designs, some with rhinestones and pearls, for casual through formal and special occasion dining

needs. “We’re offering a wider variety, a broader collection of products than ever before. But we are very focused on table linens. It’s what we specialize in,” she said. “We make linen-like polyester, linen, hand-stitching, faux silk with ribbon embroidery. We can offer whatever a retailer needs — from lower end to high end.” Gialedakis explained that she used to bring Mera to the market when its specialty side was showcased at the Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center, but she was stopped participating after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “Our market suddenly shifted after 9/11 in the U.S., so I turned my focus on building my business in the Canadian market,” she said. Also hindering her business in its earlier days was the currency

shift in Greece to the Euro, which made it cost-prohibitive for her to continue working with a factory of handmade cutwork goods in Athens. In more recent years, Gialedakis relocated the manufacturing side of her business to China, and aligned with “a really great” factory there where she produces cutwork table linens along with a bevy of other styles at competitive prices. “And now I have enough product to accommodate the U.S. market, which is what brings me back to the New York [Home Fashions market],” she summed. HTT Mera International’s new offerings include a solid raspberry red, top; a multicolored sunflower design, center; and a traditional white as seen below.

Safavieh Readies Products For Market P O R T W A S H I N G T O N , N.Y. —

Safavieh is looking to enhance its upscale area rug offerings by unveiling of several new products in multiple coordinating categories during the New York Home Fashions Market later this month. At its Manhattan showroom, located at 153 Madison Ave. at 32nd Street, the company will present its new indoor/outdoor rug collections, a series of new accent pillows, bath rugs, and a multitude of new designs in popular hand-tufted, hand-knotted and flat-weave collections.

“This March will be among the most prolific home fashions market product launches for Safavieh in terms of design offerings, price ranges and new constructions and weaves,” said Arash Yaraghi, principal. “We were encouraged by response to our introductions at the January markets in Atlanta and Las Vegas, and plan to roll out new products incorporating technological innovations with fashion-forward design throughout 2013.” Yaraghi explained that one example is Safavieh’s Veranda collection of indoor/outdoor rugs, which originally launched one year ago and is now being expanded with 12 patterns in a new weave that creates a needlepoint effect. Each design features five colors, and patterns span Suzanis to modern florals. Veranda rugs are loomed in Turkey from enhanced polypropylene. The pieces are made of wool in India to recreate the look of handknotted carpets. Safavieh’s dimensional Cambridge rug collection is handtufted in India of wool in a combination of plush pile and loop textures to highlight timeless motifs updated in fashion colors. New for market is a palette that features creamy white with coastal blue, pink, or gray with cream. Also being featured in rugs are several new constructions to the Shag Collection, including Chevron Shag from the 200 Seriesmade from 100% acrylic. In the dec pillow category, Safavieh is offering an expanded offering divvied into four new collections as well as additions to existing running line collections. The Cali Shag pillow introduces a shag-inspired look with the silky hand of high-end decorator tassels. The polyester cover is embellished with individual multi-strand tassels to create a tactile texture. Colors range from champagne and platinum to lilac and electric blue. The new Sea Shell Collection

And Safavieh is enhancing the Nature Collection with a new line of five butterfly patterns printed on covers of either 100% cotton or linen/cotton blends. In pillows, the company is showing a new collection of art pillows with travel scenes and global icons printed on organic cotton covers. The collection includes 12 designs that can be mixed and matched. Safavieh’s World Cultures collection features detailed repeat motifs as well as full size images such as the Eiffel Tower and European

street scenes, the peacocks and elephants of India and the Moorish palaces of Andalusia. In the newly developed bath rugs category, Safavieh is introducing two new collections. The Plush Master Bath collection of 100% cotton will be sold in sets of two and features bold awning stripes, sculpted stripes and geometric motifs. The Boston Bathmats collection includes a diamond motif in fashion colors with creamy white, including tangerine tango, coastal navy, bark brown and black. Anne de Solene Debuts Jacadi Line PARIS — Infant bedding and bath

house Jacadi has selected Anne de Solene to design and manufacture a collection for older children. Anne de Solene will introduce four designs in three sizes: baby, twin and queen. Designs include prints, solids and French-made embroideries. All bed linens are made of long-staple cotton. “Many retailers report that more parents are purchasing queen sized bedding for their

young children as they are going from crib directly to queen and not first using a twin sized bed.

This is somewhat geographical, being seen primarily in California and Texas,” said Eric Paner, U.S. national sales manager for Anne de Solene. Anne de Solene debuted the line at Maison & Objet in January. Jacadi operates more than 285 shops worldwide. The partnership with Anne de Solene provides an opportunity for brand distribution through additional retailers. HTT

Home Textiles a New Sweet Spot For ShopNBC M I N N E A P O L I S — Home was among the catalysts strengthening sales in the fourth quarter and fiscal 2012 for multichannel retailer ValueVision Media Inc., which operates as ShopNBC. The company has been pushing deeper into the category, according to ValueVision ceo Keith Stewart. “In our home store we didn’t have a kitchen business or a robust home textiles business, which are very big within our industry yet quite infant at ShopNBC. So we are very, very pleased with that progress,” he said during the company’s earn-

ings call March 6. Although there was an extra week in the fourth quarter and fiscal year, ValueVision reported its results based on an equivalent 13- and 52-week basis. The company’s net loss widened in the quarter, rising to $11.4 million from the year ago net loss of $8.3 million. Better news came in net sales, which rose 11.7% to $164.8 million, thanks largely to a significant rebound in consumer electronics and “solid performances” in the home and beauty segments. Quarterly net shipped units rose by 11.6% to 1.6 million, reflecting a better merchandise

mix as well as a modest decline in average price points. Internet net sales in the quarter jumped 160 basis points to 46.3%, driven mostly by growth in mobile transactions. For the full fiscal year, ValueVision improved its net loss, dropping it to $27.6 million from the prior year’s net loss of $48.1 million. Net sales for the 52 weeks grew 2.8% to $574.1 million, and the company also noted it increased its distribution footprint to 84 million homes by 2012’s yearend and began the New Year with two channels of exposure in 70% of its homes. Brunton International Transforms Faux Fur Pillows into Big Business InnovaTIve desIgn, Bold colors, cuTTIng edge FaBrIc treatments and an irresistibly soft feel have led the way for Brunton International – with its fun and trendy faux fur pillows - to become a celebrity in the world of juveniles, teens and tweens. With price points too attractive to resist, parents and grandparents have embraced them for their own kids and grandkids as well. As the leading supplier of decorative faux fur pillows for the mass market, Brunton has focused its attention on this demographic in recent years with good reason. “During downturns in the market, parents and grandparents will cut back on spending for themselves, but they don’t give up buying for the children in their lives,” says company Founder and President, Roy Brunton. “With our competitive prices, and vast selection offered at the store level, it’s easy for them to pick up one of our pillows. They’re often point of purchase items – shoppers like the look, the feel - and with prices ranging from $6 to $20, they are hard to resist. As a result, our growth over the last three years has been phenomenal.”

With a breadth and depth of product that is unmatched – 20 pillow sizes to choose from and between 35 and 40 different styles of fur - Brunton has not abandoned the adult pillow market. With such new and technologically advanced products as its “Puggle Fur” and “Poodle Shag Fur,” the company continues to push the envelope on innovative development. But in this world of animal prints, brushed fur designs, unique and trend right patterns, bling, tie-dye and glitter faux fur pillows, it’s the younger generation that garners most of the attention. With them in mind, Brunton is embarking on the next chapter in its history, signing its first licensing agreement, which will significantly expand its distribution and introduce the line to an entirely new audience. With the details of the agreement still under wraps, Brunton is proud to say that his peers recommended the company to the licensor. “It’s right in the wheelhouse of what we do, and will allow us to offer our styling and competitive pricing to mid-tier retail stores such as J.C. Penney, Kohl’s, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Gordmans, as well as upper-tier catalogs with a reason for being,” Brunton explains. The debut collection will officially launch in September, and the excitement is palpable. Brunton’s growth is evident in a number of other ways as well. The company’s 2012 offering of 35 to 40 fur styles, its largest ever, necessitated a showroom move in March of that year. Moving from the 10th floor of 230 Fifth Avenue to a corner location on the 8th floor added an impressive 50 percent more space to showcase the complete line. And, as Brunton admits, the extra space has allowed him to “think outside the box” in order to make it more fun for customers to enjoy the “experience” of being a “part” of the showroom rather than just “being” in another showroom. It’s this desire to bring fun and smiles to the faces of both his grownup and kid customers that motivates Brunton to always look ahead and find new ways to embellish and expand the “experience.” “We’re constantly refreshing and updating because kids today, both young and old, demand innovation. I never thought that I’d have to innovate this often and this quickly, but when you market to this segment, it’s the name of the game,” Brunton says. It’s also one of the reasons behind the addition of Denise Stoughton as Design Director for the company. Denise will spearhead the design direction of the license as well as work with Roy Brunton in the continued growth of its existing product line. This evolution is the latest transformation for a company that began as an importer of Dhurrie rugs from India in 1991. In 1998, the company morphed into one of the largest suppliers of Chenille throws from China, being named Vendor of the Year for Target Stores in 2000. The metamorphosis continued in 2003 when the company ventured into the pillow filling business, adding one filling machine with two nozzles and six sewing machines. The rest, as they say, is history. Shortly thereafter, the company decided to make faux fur its specialty, and this segment now represents some 80+ percent of Brunton’s offerings. Completely satisfied with the metamorphosis of his company into one where teens, tweens and juveniles command the greatest attention, Brunton calls the move “one of the best things we’ve ever done.” There have been doubters of his vision along the way for sure, but they’ve become believers. “With the support of our customers, Brunton International is proud to maintain our position as ‘King’ of the faux fur pillow market.”

BUSINESS TodaY February Sales Beat Forecast WASHINGTON — In response to the end of the payroll tax holiday and higher gasoline prices, consumers quickly adjusted their spending, driving retail sales upward enough to beat estimates in February — although sales of home furnishings took a hit during the month. The National Retail Federation’s February retail sales report shows sales excluding automobiles, gas st ations and restaurants increased 0.7% seasonally adjusted from January and inched up 0.5% unadjusted year-over-year. By segment, results varied – with some areas gaining and others missing sales. Furniture and home furnishing stores’ sales, for example, decreased 1.6% seasonally-adjusted month-to-

month and decreased 2.0% unadjusted year-over-year, while building material and garden equipment and supplies stores’ sales increased 1.1% seasonallyadjusted and increased 0.9% unadjusted year-over-year. “Retail continues to show its importance to the economy,” explained Matthew Shay, NRF president and ceo. “That said, our consumer research consistently shows a cautious shopper that is making tough spending decisions based upon economic uncertainties, lower paychecks and higher prices for things such as gas. This is particularly true among those making $50,000 or less a year.” He warned that while retail sales numbers “indicate good momentum for the economy, consumers with less earning

power may continue to face ongoing pressure and retail sales will encounter further challenges as sequestration takes full effect in March.” February retail sales, released today by the U.S. Department of Commerce, showed total retail and food services sales, which include non-general merchandise categories such as automobiles, gasoline stations, and rest aurants, increased 1.1% seasonally adjusted month-tomonth and increased 4.6% adjusted year-over-year. “Consumers, once again, exceeded economists’ expectations and estimates in February,” said Jeff Kleinhenz, NRF chief economist. “It may be too early to measure the impact of the payroll tax hike and high-

er gasoline prices on consumer spending. However, this portends a good, but not great, first quarter for retailers as consumers continue to breathe life into the economy.” Other findings, by segment, include: • Clothing and clothing accessories stores’ sales increased 0.2% seasonally-adjusted monthto-month and increased 0.4% unadjusted year-over-year; • Electronics and appliance stores’ sales decreased 0.2% seasonally-adjusted month-tomonth and decreased 3.2% unadjusted year-over-year; • General merchandise stores’ sales increased 0.5% seasonally-adjusted month-tomonth but decreased 4.7% unadjusted year-over-year. The Middle Ground MAYHEM FROM PAGE 5

Stores like Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl’s and JCP are the ones zeroing in on this customer, but add in Macy’s, the TJX trio of brands and the Sears/Kmart conglomeration from the bottom and an assortment of other players from Costco to Amazon to Bon-Ton Stores and you have a crowded market space. All or most of them will be shopping the market this week looking for just the right mix of product and price to appeal to a consumer group battered by higher gas prices, increased medical expenses and payroll tax hikes. These are the not the people benefiting from the run-up on Wall Street: These are the ones who usually don’t stray very far from Main Street. The move to the middle comes as the bottom of the marketplace feels the pressure more than ever from tightening purse strings. Walmart is still the 800-pound retailer in this space and is aggressively fighting off any incursions. Dollar store chains, which took some market share during the height of the Great Recession, have largely given most of that back as they continue to shift their emphasis from discretionary products to disposables and food. That helps explain the move to the middle. Here’s how some of the bigger players in this segment stack up as they come to market with their shopping lists.

JCP: Certainly the retailer getting the most headlines, the retailer-formerly-known-as-JCPenney is also the operation most in flux. Its well-reported move to make Martha Stewart the centerpiece of its home assortment is on hold thanks to legal procedures, so it has scrambled to roll-out a mix of products under the JCP Home, Studio and Everyday labels, layering them on top of names like Royal Velvet, Liz Claiborne and the soon-to-arrive Jonathan Adler Happy Chic and Design by Conran brands. Penney will come to market this week with several scenarios in mind since it won’t have an answer to its Martha riddle until April at the earliest. Macy’s: Win, lose or draw, the folks on 34th Street will be in control of their Martha programs at least for a few more years. What they choose to do with them is another matter. They, too, are likely to have a Column A and a Column B shopping list depending on how they merchandise their selling floor. And with rumors circulating of a shift in the Lauren business strategy coming from Polo, that could also impact buying decisions being made this week. Kohl’s: Despite the confusion at arch-rival Penney, this store has struggled to put together solid numbers over the past several quarters. Whether that signals a change in merchandising philosophy away from store-wide private labels to something else remains to be seen. What is clear is that the store is doubling down on its promotional strategy of heavy sales, couponing and discounts.

Licenses HOME SOURCE FROM PAGE 5

accessories as well as sheets,” he said. “Throws are sold in our showroom as well, but we are not the licensee for throws. That is a strategic, synergistic relationship as part of the total Home Source/Kennebunk relationship. We sell but do not produce the throws.” Sorgeloos said the company has also been aggressively working with colleges and universities for dorm room décor and will be presenting a dorm room exhibit at this year’s market. Home Source’s new domestic cut-and-sew operation in Marianna, Fla., is scheduled to open in April. The company is also producing furniture in the 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility for Shiner International, which it acquired in spring 2012. “There’s a lot of advantage for filled products being in the U.S.” He explained that shipping filled product often means essentially paying to “ship air.” Sorgeloos said the facility will will be “a one-stop shop for manufacturing furniture and home textiles” made in the United States. HTT

htt130302_005_124.indd 124

Bed Bath & Beyond: Still recovering from what most in the trade would characterize as a disastrous down-market path in its core bedding business, Bed Bath is rebuilding the department with new additions, including a major Wamsutta roll-out this spring following its still-unreported purchase of the brand from Springs Global. Other brands including Nautica, DKNY and Croscill figure prominently in its bedding strategy while over in bath, the store continues to rebrand what had been a Royal Velvet-centric towel department. Target: We’re getting a clear picture of the new spring set at Target with last week’s debut of the Threshold program, which gets prime real estate both in the store and in the retailer’s advertising. Dubbed “Update Classics,” the new program take a casual approach to design and runs across both soft and hard home categories. Target buyers coming into market will have some initial numbers on how the new products are doing and are likely to alter their shopping lists accordingly. While these are the stores most focused on the mid-market shopper, there are plenty of others, making for an increasingly crowded segment – especially in light of a shrinking middle class. But such strategies can be fraught with drawbacks. One of society’s greatest contemporary philosophers may have summed up best the dangers of playing the middle: “You either love or you hate. You live in the middle, you get nothing.” Charlie Sheen said that. HTT
