Not every parent can afford it. That’s where Crayons to Calculators comes in. Crayons to Calculators collects school supplies and cash donations with the goal of providing fully stocked backpacks to students who need them in the St. Vrain Valley and Boulder Valley school districts. Growing Up Erie High School sports move to Class 4A, football to 3A By Lindsey Larson Colorado Hometown Weekly

The Erie Tigers have enjoyed great athletic success at the Class 3A level, but in the fall of 2010 the school will face the challenge of moving up to 4A competition in all sports except football, which moves up from 2A to 3A. The Tiger football team will compete in the Northern League with such teams as Berthoud, Mountain View and Roosevelt. The rest of the Erie athletic programs will compete in the Tri-Valley League with schools like Windsor, Frederick, Fort Morgan, Sterling and

Northridge. Principal Steve Payne estimated Erie’s student population to be just over 700 by the end of the 2009-2010 school year. By the fall of 2010, he said the population should be close to 780. The minimum population cut-off for 3A football in the 2010-2011 school year is 601, turning the Tigers from a large 2A team into a relatively small 3A team. Payne said this week he thinks though the Tigers will be the small fish in a big pond, the teams should still be able File photograph to hold their own. Our teachers recognize the uniqueness of each child and work with each to build mastery in specific subjects, while helping identify new areas of interest for exploration. Each child is nurtured to develop a love of learning from an early age. Primary-aged children receive individual lessons presented by their teacher in classrooms of 30 students or less with a teacher ratio of 1:10. but that’s fun,” Payne said. “I think all the coaches are excited to make the move and compete.” Last fall, Erie’s softball team steamrolled its way to a 22-1 record and an unprecedented 10th Class 3A softball title, defeating the Burlington Cougars, 8-0, in the championship game. With a roster full of soon-to-be seniors, the Tigers should make the transition to 4A with little difficulty. “I think they’re going to do fine,” 2010 graduate Jordan Ruiz said. “Personally, I think they’re going to make it to the state tournament. If they’re the team I know they are, they’re definitely going to make it to the state tournament.” Haley David is one of eight Tigers who will be seniors this year. She said the thrill of the unknown may propel the Tigers to great heights in their new classification. “It’ll be exciting to see how we do in 4A,” David said.

ucation. The BVEA will set the dates for its membership to vote on the tentative agreement. Because the tentative agreement was not ratified by the June 30 legal deadline for BVSD to have a balanced 2010-2011 budget adopted, the budget approved in June does not reflect the terms of the new tentative agreement. However, a revision incorporating the terms of the tentative agreement to the 2010-2011 BVSD budget will be brought to the school board if the tentative agreement is ratified by BVEA members and the school board. The elements of the BVSD/BVEA tentative agreement for compensation are as follows: • Two year agreement through 2011-2012 • Teacher work year reduced by one non-student contact day from 187-186 days (Veterans Day) • Salary schedule educational attainment movement for both years • Full employee premium cost provided for health and dental insurance coverage for both years • Salary schedule experience steps provided See • Agreement, Page A12
