Many of you enjoy each season of the year and welcome the changes they bring; warm springs, hot summers, temperate falls, and chilly winters. For all of you out there who really look forward to these changes I would like to say, I am truly sorry. Yes, it is my fault that we have had little to no real winter this year. You see…I bought a heavy winter coat just before Thanksgiving. Oh, I know, it seems ridiculous to make a purchase like this in our part of the country but, in my defense, the last several winters had convinced me that the weather in Texas was becoming more seasonal. Last year I drug out every sweater and jacket, scarf and glove that I owned and was still freezing in January and February. So, dear reader, you can blame the unseasonably warm February that we have had on me. Much like washing your car makes it rain – buying a heavy woolen coat assures mild temperatures with no chance to wear it at all! Daffodils and jonquils popped out of the ground and welcomed the warm weather in February and people started sporting shorts and flip flops in the 80 degree temps. So, whether we like it or not, spring has arrived and with it the promise of a new beginning. Area nurseries and big box stores are readying their shelves for the onslaught of weekend gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts. Restaurants are storing patio heaters and sprucing up their

outdoor eating areas in preparation for months of warm weather. Retailers are showing off patio furniture, inflatable pools and spring apparel. All around the area communities are gearing up for festivals and activities to welcome the new season. March 19th and 20th Granbury Texas celebrates General Granbury’s Birthday Weekend. This year marks the 38th year for the event that celebrates Granbury’s founding father. Presented by the Historic Granbury Merchants Association, the Festival includes a parade, free birthday cake ice cream, a BBQ cook-off, an outhouse race, live entertainment, shopping and much more.
March 31st marks the premiere fundraising event for the recently formed Chandor Gardens Foundation Inc. as they host an evening with Texas humorist Bonnie Rea. Wine, Women, and Words combines fine wine, heavy hors d’oeuvres, tours of the gardens and a lecture by Ms. Rea that focuses on “what’s important in life” and includes tips on aging with ATTITUDE! Check out our calendar of events and activities pages for information on all the upcoming fun and interesting things to do this spring. While you’re at it go out and buy that swimsuit you’ve been wanting right now! Maybe that will work to give us all a cooler August this year. Wishing you all a beautiful spring,

MARCH IN TO SOME CRAZY GOOD FILMS
A
s we get prepared for rainy weather and the donning of the green, let’s not forget to dry ourselves at the local theater for some seriously good films coming out this month. Sequels seem to be the order of the month, and a few will be the biggest draws in March. Enjoy the diverse genres of films coming out and be sure to order your soda and popcorn in a fake Irish accent. Friday, March 4th starts the onslaught of big draws beginning with London Has Fallen. This sequel to the 2013 Olympus Has Fallen brings back
Gerard Butler as Mike Banning, though Babak Nafaji has returned as the director, not Antoine Fuqua. After the British Prime Minister passes away, his funeral becomes a target of a terrorist organization to destroy some of the world’s most powerful leaders, devastate the British capital, and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. The only hope of stopping it rests on the shoulders of the President of the United States (Aaron Eckhart) and his formidable Secret Service head (Gerard Butler), and an English MI-6 agent (Charlotte Riley) who rightly trusts no one. Morgan Freeman also stars as the Vice President of the United States. Zootopia, an animated comedy in both 2D and 3D, opens nationwide on the 4th as well. Director Byron Howard is a Disney veteran, having worked in various jobs on movies ranging from Pocahontas and Mulan to Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear. The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from
every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. This is also Jason Bateman’s first voice over work for an animated film. Bravo!
Okay folks and nerdboys nationwide- hold the phone. Batman vs. Superman will open at the end of the month. The greatest superheroes in the world face off- Batman and Superman. As stated in Frank Miller’s 1986 comic book, “The Dark Knight Returns,” in which Batman battles Superman: “I want you to remember, Clark. In all the years to come. In all your most private moments. I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you.” How’s that for spite, people?!
The Divergent Series: Allegiant opens Friday, March 4th and preview trailers show this to be one little tasty adventure flick. After the earth-shattering revelations of The Divergent Series: Insurgent, Tris must escape with Four and go beyond the wall enclosing Chicago. For the first time ever, they will leave the only city and family they have ever known in order to find a peaceful solution for their embroiled city. Once outside, old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless with the revelation of shocking new truths. Tris and Four must quickly decide who they can trust as a ruthless battle ignites beyond the walls of Chicago which threatens all of humanity. In order to survive, Tris will be forced to make impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love.
Let’s not forget the rom-com of the month, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. This little gem has been 15 years in the work and lets us re-visit the lives of our favorite Greek family. The film reveals a Portokalos family secret that will bring the beloved characters back together for an even bigger and Greeker wedding. Nia Vardalos, who wrote the first, has scripted the second installment and will star with John Corbett, her groom in the original Joel Zwickdirected romantic comedy. Also back is the brash Portokalos family. The long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. FUN FACT: My Big Fat Greek Wedding is the second most profitable film of all time. Nia Vardolas wrote it because she couldn’t land any other roles, and Tom Hanks produced the original.

Art at all. For those it touches, it becomes an important priority in their lives, regardless of their socio-economics. Sometimes, it’s an oil rig worker who spends a significant portion of his income on artwork and drives several hours to gallery openings to meet the artists. He once said that sitting in his living room full of paintings and enjoying each one was the only thing that helped with the stress of his job.
W
orking with galleries, I often am told how they witness a huge range of reactions and emotions that people have to art. One man would come into one of our local galleries each week, sit down on the bench, and STARE at an artwork sometimes for an hour. Sometimes, he
would be so moved that he occasionally weeped…connected with the story that the artist was telling. Fortunately, his family became aware of this and for his birthday they purchased it. People sometimes think only “rich” people purchase art. That’s not true
Working with a gallery and learning what type of art speaks to you, the gallery will find the perfect artwork, even if it is not in their gallery currently. They will call you and when you find that perfect piece, they will even setup up a layaway plan. It may be a small piece, but it is a huge impact in your life. It is meant for you to have a piece which you will enjoy that much.
You will be happy you purchased it……… because art transforms lives for the better. However, it is not just the lives of the art collector that are transformed. The very act of creating art transforms the lives of artists too. The world is so much better with art, and we hope you support the arts in our community. Your Private Collection Art Gallery 106 N. Tragedy struck in 1954, when two members of the group, R.W. Blackwood and Bill Lyles, were killed in a plane crash. After the accident, many fans and critics alike believed that the quartet would not be able to go forth. However, as fate would have it, R.W.’s youngest brother, Cecil Blackwood, joined the group along with the bass singer, J.D. Sumner, silencing any doubts the public had about the quartet continuing to be a force in gospel music.
Granbury Theatre Company will present Blackwood Quartet concerts of “The Gospel Side of Elvis” during Easter weekend at the historic Granbury Opera House in Downtown Granbury.
Concerts are scheduled for 7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 25 and 2:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 26. Tickets are available for $35 in prime seating, $30 in standard seating, and $25 in the balcony. The Blackwood Quartet performances also kick off GTC’s Tribute Season, which includes other tribute concerts later in the year: Neil Diamond Tribute starring Conner Lorre (May 6-7), Johnny Cash Tribute starring Terry Lee Goffee (July 29-30), and The Eagles Tribute starring The Long Run Band
from Colorado (September 16-18). Packages for all four tribute performances are $130 for prime seating, $105 for standard seating, and $85 in the balcony.
Despite the family tragedy, earlier that same month saw the birth of Cecil Blackwood’s son, Mark, who has held on to the tradition and sound that has made the Blackwood name world famous. In 2012, Mark formed the Blackwood Quartet, which tours regularly and brings the word of Christ through song, to both believers and non-believers alike. The quartet has had the privilege of performing with Willie Nelson and many other great artists. Recently, the group’s popularity has grown among Elvis tribute artist fans, as well. Tickets are available on the GTC website at www. granburytheatrecompany.org or by calling the GTC box office at (817) 579-0952.
In 1934, brothers Roy, Doyle and James Blackwood, along with Roy’s son R.W., formed what was to become the most beloved and respected gospel group of all time, The Blackwood Brothers Quartet. Eventually, a quartet, which later included Bill Shaw and Bill Lyles, went on to be featured on several TV shows including ”The Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters,” the beloved American classic “Hee Haw,” and the prestigious “Arthur Godfrey Talent Show” in 1954.

eneral Hiram B. Granbury was born March 1, 1831 in Copiah County Mississippi. He was a graduate of Mississippi’s prestigious Oakland College, located near the river town of Rodney, Mississippi. In the 1850’s Granbury moved to Waco, Texas where he was admitted to the Texas Bar and later served as chief justice of McLennan County. On March
31, 1858, he married Fannie Sims (born in Alabama in 1838) of Waco; they had no children. Granbury recruited the Waco Guards and in November 1861 at Hopkinsville, Kentucky the Texas Volunteer regiment elected Granbury as Major. On Feb. 29, 1864, following a brilliant performance in the Chattanooga-Rinngold Campaign, Granbury was commissioned brigadier

Granbury was first buried near Franklin, Tennessee, then reinterred in Ashwoods Cemetery belonging to St. John’s Episcopal Church. In Jerusalem Village your senses and mind will be awash with delight as you step through time into the New Testament Passover celebrations. Your tour group will stride into a village through the course of diverse stone dwellings and learn some of the traditions of this Biblical feast as you experience families celebrating Passover. Feel the sentiment and divine appreciation of Christ as you witness Judas Iscariot and his plot to betray Jesus. The highlight of this adventure is going on to the upper room where you will observe an up-close and personal view of the reenactment of the Last Supper. retty much everyone, I hope, has heard of genetically modified organisms, also called GMOs. And pretty much everyone, I hope, knows that they are now a major part of the American food supply.
crop, soybeans, came out in 1996. Resistant strains of corn, canola, alfalfa, cotton and sorghum are now common. GMO wheat is under development, but today, even non-GMO wheat is doused with glyphosate.
Specifically, about half of all crops planted on American farmland are genetically modified, including 85% of corn and 91% of soybeans.
The touted advantage is that farmers can just spray it on and the crop lives while the weeds die, making harvest quick and efficient. In a few days, the glyphosate is said to break down into harmless compounds. Unfortunately, every detail of this official narrative is suspect. Consider that glyphosate is:
Most people, however, can’t say why this situation might be dangerous, beyond the idea that splicing genes from one species into another is “unnatural.” That’s true enough, but here’s the fundamental issue — what’s the goal of creating GMOs? If it is boosting nutrition content, that worthwhile aim might be worth at least considering (though even here, there are likely downstream consequences that need thorough, long-term research). But that goal is virtually never on Big Food’s GMO agenda. The first and most common reason companies re-jigger genomes is to help plants resist applications of potent herbicides, especially one called glyphosate (GLY-foe-sate), the key ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup. The first glyphosate-resistant GMO
• Everywhere in the environment: Paul Capel, an environmental chemist and head of the agricultural chemicals team at the U.S. Geological Survey Office, reported in 2011 that glyphosate was found in every stream sample examined in Mississippi in a two-year period. “This study is one of the first to document the consistent occurrence of this chemical in streams, rain, and air throughout the growing season,” he told the news agency Reuters. “It is used so heavily and studied so little”. • Inside human beings: In the first-ever test of glyphosate in human breast milk, “high” levels were found in three of
www.myhometownstexas.com
10 American samples tested. In Europe — where officials conduct far more studies, even though glyphosate use is lower — a 2012 study found the stuff in every urine sample it took in Berlin; another study found it in the urine of citizens in 18 countries. Such results suggest glyphosate bio-accumulates over time in tissues, despite industry assertions to the contrary. • Probably harming us: Glyphosate works by disrupting a metabolic process called the shikimate pathway, which is absent in all animals — that’s why its makers claim the poison is harmless to humans. But this pathway is found in bacteria, including the trillions of beneficial microbes in your gut. According to Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Dr. Stephanie Seneff, glyphosate is hardest on the most beneficial bacteria in your internal ecosystem. Suppressing those good bugs, she says, appears to allow pathogens to proliferate, leading to rampedup inflammation and a host of chronic diseases. • Not even known to work: Glyphosate-resistant “superweeds” are rendering these toxic sprays useless. A New York Times article describes how farmers were going back to weed-control techniques like plowing, as fast-growing spray-immune mutants like pigweed take over their fields. One agricultural scientist called the situation “Darwinian evolution in fastforward”. • About to become more toxic: To overcome superweeds, Dow Chemical has created “Enlist Duo.” It combines glyphosate with 2,4-D, a component of the Vietnam-era “Agent Orange” pesticide that was linked to reproductive problems,
non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Parkinson’s disease. The EPA has, you guessed it, granted approval. Dow plans to make $1 billion from this nightmarish combo killer, and hoped to start selling it in the 2015 spring planting season. Bottom line: Virtually every human, animal, and plant in America is now part of a massive, uncontrolled experiment to determine if an herbicide that’s been widely used for less than two decades will cause serious health and environmental harm. So avoid conventionally raised food as much as possible — especially anything containing corn or soy. Buy certified organic foods, as these do not contain products with GMO ingredients. Or, better yet, grow your own food as much as possible, organically, using non-hybrid seeds, and especially heirloom strains. There is no better or more effective way to withdraw from the experiment. Next month’s article will present testimonials from affected people, more information on the ban of this dangerous chemical in Europe, gluten sensitivity, ‘wheat belly’ & what you can do to safeguard yourself & your family.

onnie Lane Interiors still displays the Lane’s Furniture marquee that it was established as when Bonnie Lane and her husband moved to Granbury in 1996. Bonnie took a short lived hiatus in 2002 to work from home but then returned and re-opened as Bonnie Lane Interiors. Bonnie began interior decorating in 1975, during her 14 years as a teacher in Oklahoma. She had a degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, but discovered she had a talent for decorating. It was not long before God showed her that decorating was her true calling. “I’ve met so many wonderful people,” Bonnie told me, and that’s a big part of why she loves decorating.

Bonnie is proud to employ women from the Christian Women’s Job Corp, which is a 501(c)(3) interdenominational program that operates with financial support of donations and grants. Since opening their doors to the Granbury public in 2003, they have become a reliable community source created to instruct and place men and women who need to enter the work force with marketable skills. They assist single moms and dads, those recovering from addiction and abuse, among others. Bonnie Lane Interiors sells furniture, blinds and shutters. Bonnie charges $50.00 per hour for consultations and will apply that towards the purchase. Bonnie shared, “I love helping people make their home what they want it to be. I might want to put flowers everywhere but they may not. It’s important to give the customer what they want.”
