APRIL’S SPACE BY Elisabeth cardona

020 welcome to This issue is my absolute favourite to do – featuring dream homes is a lot of fun, not only because it’s encouraging to see such gorgeous homes, but also because it’s inspirational to see homeowners living their dream. Check out the English family in Rabat that lives and breathes contemporary function. This home is so contemporary, yet warm, practical and great fun for the kids (page 20). Pippa Toledo designs a luxurious pad at Tigné Point, through the clever use of materials, the colour white and optimal exposure to the view. Combined, these elements make for a highly luxurious and inspirational apartment (page 30). Mark Cassar creates his dream home through dedication, love and a keen eye for detail on page 40.

Everyone wants a piece of their idea of a dream home – HOMEWORKS shows you how it’s attainable through our high budget – low budget feature on page 58. Find out how to go about installing the perfect modern bathroom through tips, ideas and suggestions on page 48. Tying in with dream homes is the new room at the San Anton Presidential Palace – the perfect account of how luxurious and high quality can be achieved on a budget (page 69). A grand garden, full of serenity sits against the high cliffs in Fawarra, overlooking the immense Mediterranean. See a garden to die for on page 81. This issue’s Sunday Lunch cuisine and wine section is with Chefs Adrian & Kevin Bonello, de Mondion, Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux on page 91. There we have it – a spring issue full of inspiration and aspiration. Everyone can work towards that dream home – even if it’s just that one small step at a time.

GORDON MANGION HAS WON THE SET OF TWO CERAMIC VASES, FROM THE LATEST COLLECTION AVAILABLE AT PRESTIGE INTERIORS. Gordon wrote: Dear Editor, “I would like to congratulate you for the most packed home magazine one can find on the market. There are definitively no excuses for those out there who say that they have no idea how to go about designing their homes. I found Issue 29.08 the most inspiring of all, showing 3 different homes, but all very intensive, beautiful, modern and functional at the same time. Whenever we are abroad, my wife and I always make it a point to buy a piece of art, be it a painting, sculpture or something else – not just to remind us of our holiday but to fill our home with authentic pieces from different countries. I would like to read and see ideas how to choose the ‘perfect artwork’ in relation to certain rooms especially for living areas, bedrooms and halls, both in a modern and contemporary environment. I would also like to read about tips and advice on the setup and framing of these paintings. “Prosit” and keep up the excellent work, I really like the new layout of the magazine. You and your team have achieved so much respect from all of us readers.” Gordon Mangion

“Well done for the wonderful issues of HOMEWORKS! They have always been very inspiring to my partner and I. We would have never come up with certain ideas for our house if we weren’t HOMEWORKS readers. It’s amazing how your tips and originality have turned our house into a dream and for this we thank all of your team. Keep it up! In the upcoming issues, we would like to learn more about washroom designs. At the moment, our washroom is only at the planning phase so before we actually start constructing it I want to be 100% sure that it will suite my taste and needs.”

“A huge ‘prosit’ for all your articles and congratulations to the HOMEWORKS team for the effort to produce such a high standard publication. I have a collection of magazines in relation to interior design, as I am very interested in the subject and your magazine features among brand-name magazines in my collection. I would very much like to see a detailed article on roof gardens by an architect or architects featuring spas or splash pools: their advice, comments and opinions on feasibility. In Malta we have quite large roofs, which we tend to ignore and of which we could make better use of.

IT TOOK SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY TO MOVE THE HOWES FAMILY FROM THEIR LONDON HOME. HOMEWORKS FINDS OUT ABOUT THE HOUSE THAT SEALED THE DEAL.

020

13260 HW ISSUE 30 fin V1.indd 20

4/9/08 9:36:12 AM

There’s a definite ‘wow’ factor involved here, after all it’s not everyday that a house’s back wall is completely replaced with glass panels, essentially bringing the outdoors in. It’s that very aspect that inspired a London family to pack lock, stock and barrel and settle in this unusual Rabat townhouse. “We were quite overwhelmed by the house when we first saw it eighteen months ago and immediately decided to buy it,” explains Marlon Howes. “Even at that time we knew that we would be able to seamlessly merge our existing home in London into this one, as it offered a lot of scope to do exactly what we wanted. The upshot is that it has become the perfect family home for myself, my wife April and out two children.”

The hundred-year-old, three-storey house was renovated by its previous owners around five years ago, restructuring it from standard to extraordinary. Architectural Designer Mark Pace and Structural Engineer Aldo Caruana added an extension on to the existing building. The result is that the house now flows effortlessly from level to level thanks to its open plan layout; through the glass ‘antiporta’ at the entrance there is an immediate view of the entire lower-ground and ground floors, as well as the pool area and garden behind it.

The minimalist kitchen is situated half a storey below the main corridor, while the expansive, music-themed dining room leads off it; a poolside eating area (just one of three to be found on the various balconies that lead off the back of the house) offers an alfresco alternative and is something that the family make great use of. “We love to entertain and this house lends itself perfectly to that purpose. The downstairs area is spacious and impressive and we have

“It was important for us that we could bring our furniture with us and it feels a little like we bought a house to fit what we already owned as it all blends in so well! At the end of the day the house can look grand and impressive, but it also needs to function for our needs and the needs of our children.

a lot of fun utilising the space on offer. We especially enjoy the summer months when we throw open the windows and doors so the outdoors can merge with the indoors and it feels like we live in the garden; they become like one space.

The family’s sitting room is situated on another split-level and visible from both the ground floor and outside. Another outdoors seating area leads off that room and offers a pleasing view of the pool and garden below.

“For that, the open plan layout is incredibly practical, as we can all seem to be within the same space even if we are not in the same room.”

“One of the reasons we opted for this house was its pool, which was a great change from London and a real plus for our children – Tilly, eleven and Sky, ten.” The house becomes more and more family oriented as one moves up through the floors.

The house continues to sprawl upwards, leading to four large bedrooms. “My favourite aspect of the house is the contrast between the old and new,” explains April. For instance, the old Maltese bricks against the glass panels, or our modern furniture against the traditional architecture. It gives the house a unique feel and it’s been a pleasure to decorate from that aspect. I also tried to unite Maltese design with English décor – that was a challenge but the outcome is pleasing. We even brought our garden shed with us from London and it slots in nicely on the lawn!” While all of the structural changes had been completed, the family still had to make a number of adjustments in order to make the house habitable. “The roof needed to be changed and we decided to add a garage onto the side. We also made some lighting changes, adding bursts of colour in the corridor, which look spectacular at night.”

“We especially enjoy the summer months when we throw open the windows and doors so the outdoors can merge with the indoors and it feels like we live in the garden.” All of the rooms have balconies overlooking the garden, including the master bedroom on the top floor – a cosy room teeming with light and with views spanning the entirety of Rabat. “There is something very special about this house. It’s a hideaway in a bustling town, a little bit of history with a modern twist and a practical family home all rolled into one. When you move to Malta one of the biggest benefits is the regular sunshine and we wanted to make the most of that – well, there’s no getting around that in this house!”

One of Pippa Toledo’s greatest fortes is formulating solutions without compromising aesthetics. The renowned interior designer is capable of making smart moves to ensure that solutions are created and appear as clever design features. The art of function married with form is a fine line for an interior designer; the more control one has over this, the more costs can be kept to a minimal and the more comfortable an apartment is made to feel. Another attribute to the interior designer is her command of colour. This Tigné Seafront apartment was a blank canvas. Pippa chose the primary colour of white – the secret to doing it successfully: in the detail. When Pippa arrived on the scene, the apartment was already partially standard fit-out, which means that some areas (such as the kitchen and bathrooms) and some materials (such as the floors and walls) were already there in standard form. Had the apartment been designed with the same white marble floors, white painted walls, white window frames and white textiles, it would have looked sterile. However, the space came alive through the use of various shades of white, splashes of colour, as well as the attribute of various design illusions.

It was the perfect colour as a foundation because it went beautifully with the floor, it’s fresh, summery and it opens the area up, giving you a feeling of wellness. With the colour white there is a fear of the place looking stark, so I used a lot of white rugs, which really added a cosy feel to the space. Also, the light changes throughout the day, which means that it was important to use different shades of white to give it a personality and to create various atmospheres; depending on what position the sun is in. The splashes of vibrant colour keep it interesting and not too modern that it dates, but modern in a practical sense. Nothing is permanent about the colour, as it was added in removable doses so

that a replacement scheme can quickly take place, through the use of different cushions and flowers. The apartment can easily become a blank canvas again.” “As the apartment was standard in some areas, it needed dressing up. I designed the panelling with lines, which creates a feeling of continuity throughout the apartment, as well as a nautical look and feel. I dressed various areas with mirrors that would have otherwise been solid walls. Mirrors create movement and interest, as well as reflect the fantastic view. We focused on keeping the look and feel airy and unobtrusive – this included little details such as painting the beech wood doors white, or creating a pelmet for the curtains or the addition of cladding the service door in mirror.”

There were a few problems that needed solutions. In order to keep privacy on the terrace as well accommodate greenery, large planters were situated around the side trellises, obstructing the view from the neighbouring apartments, but leaving the stunning view open from within the apartment. In order to keep the apartment clutter-free, smart storage solutions were installed, cleverly concealed by unobtrusive doors or drawers. Intelligent lighting was used throughout and certain areas were zoned to give an accent to specific features and aspects, creating softer or brighter ambience for each area. Working with the existing soffits, the team came across unforeseen complications within the structure of the steel gridding. In order to make the space as comfortable as possible, there was a need for extra electric points to accommodate additional electrical luxuries. The end result of all the attention to detail and clever solution solving is an effortlessly light and airy apartment, ideal for entertaining as well as relaxing with maximum exposure to that glorious view.

The house, originally built around 1850, has been a labour of love for Mark Cassar for over three years. Mark: “At the time I discovered it, the house was completely derelict: uninhabitable. I have experience in converting houses through past projects and saw the potential in this one immediately. I took it under my wing straight away.” Mark’s main concerns were to increase the amount of light flowing through the property and to create livable spaces to fit his lifestyle, as well as incorporating traditional trends with contemporary twists. “The house looked very different back then. I knew the different roles that the spaces needed to fulfill – this house primarily needed to be a comfortable place to live, an exciting space to entertain in and a showcase for my art collection.” The front door opens onto a large courtyard, which was roofed over in safety-glass to allow maximum light to stream in. “We decided to close in this part of the house in order to create more room. The stairs, which are all original, lead to the bedrooms upstairs, while the space downstairs is great for entertaining and ties the whole house together. The glass rooftop above it lets in a fantastic amount of light during the day and also allows for a lot of air to circulate; in summer we can open them by remote control and it creates a lovely breeze throughout the entire house.”

A large drawing room leads off the courtyard. The room’s focal point is a tremendously imposing antique mirror, which has been passed down through generations of Mark’s family. Contrary to the furniture and style of the room, the lights are all contemporary, including the chandelier, which has a very modern twist in stainless steel. “This space used to be made up of four rooms, including an area where animals were kept. We immediately took the decision to split them up and this has become a formal seating area; it’s also where a large part of my art collection is housed. The inner part of the room is two stories high as we opted to remove the second level to create more height. At the top we also removed the ceiling and replaced that with glass slabs, which once again lets in more light. The majority of beams were replaced given that the originals were made of iron; however two of the original, wooden beams were salvaged in the higher part of the drawing room and remain intact.”

The courtyard also connects the parts of the house that are designated for entertaining. The dining room, which also houses part of Mark’s art collection, is centered around the table which has been given an interesting twist. “The table is quite modern and came from the Far East. However, I came across a large and intact piece of 1750 Maltese lace, which now sits on the table and is protected by a glass cover; it has created a nice effect.” The smaller living room, just off the dining area, was designed with relaxation in mind and serves as a chill out area. It overlooks the garden and carries on the flow of entertainment areas.

I brought the stones, one by one, from a house in Valletta which had been demolished.”

The outside parts of the house were given foremost importance during the design process and essentially feel like an extension of the indoors. The pool has colour-therapy, remote controlled lights which create a beautiful atmosphere in a variety of colours and the deck area is covered with astroturf, which is practical all year round and perfect for garden furniture. At the back of the garden is a more unkempt area where Mark grows cactuses, palms and flowering plants. “The kitchen is the last room downstairs and I designed it for myself: someone who likes to cook and entertain. It overlooks the garden so it’s very pleasant to be in as you can enjoy the view of the pool from there.” Upstairs begins with the first guest bedroom, which is decorated in a more minimalist style, and continues with one of the house’s grandest rooms. The room appears almost split level as it overlooks both the drawing room and courtyard. A lit stairwell (a traditional garigor) can be seen to one side. “That stairwell is not original to the house but ‘imported’ instead: I brought the stones, one by one, from a house in Valletta which had been demolished.” The master bedroom, which also leads off the upstairs sitting room, has its own terrace overlooking the garden and pool, as well as a large en-suite bathroom equipped with a hydro massage bath and shower, and a colour therapy bath. The bedroom itself is quite contemporary, painted and decorated in purple and earthy tones, which are the owner’s favourite. The third and final bedroom, which overlooks the street, houses original Georgian furniture brought over from London. The room, much like the whole of the house, expertly merges classical elements, such as an earlyVictorian screen, which was renovated recently with locally bought material in a classical print, with a very modern bathroom boasting all of the latest gadgets.

Today’s focal points are on feature baths and basins, together with discreet wall-hung toilets and bidets. These fittings have specific advantages: they make the bathroom look more spacious, the floor is easier to clean and borders or tile patterns aren’t interrupted by pedestals. The latest basins are wide, shallow designs and can be placed into a slab style work surface, wall-mounted with shelves and towel storage below, or installed as part of a basin unit. Deeper, rounder shapes set into slab worktops are also popular and colour is back. Together with lacquered white cabinets, chrome taps, dark wood and matching accessories, colours such as lime green or red can add a stylish touch to an otherwise minimalist bathroom. Baths are usually the crucial point of a bathroom and there is an enormous selection of shapes and fittings, adding a magnificent sense of frill. Modern roll-top styles, often mounted in a cradle or on blocks, are designed to sit in the centre of a large room, while non-freestanding designs will

need to be set into a surround finished with tiles or timber. The latest materials for baths include stone, cast-stone composites and even wood. You should think carefully before opting for a shower instead of a bath, as it may decrease the re-sale value of your property, especially if it’s a family home. Modern fitted bathroom furniture is often in dark wood, such as Ebony, Mahogany or Wenge, which works well with white and chrome.

Where walls and flooring are concerned, there is still a strong trend for tiles, with limestone or porcelain look-alike tiles very much in. To avoid a featureless look you can add bands of colour to break up plain tiles.

For a quick-fix solution, you can update your bathroom simply by swapping an outdated basin for a chic modern one. Beware, however, of the differences in whites; if possible, get a colour chip of the new basin and view it by day and night. Keep in mind that new taps need to be matched up too and disturbed tiles and plumbing will have to be made good. Brassware (which includes the taps, plug holes, showerhead and controls) can play a huge part in the look of the bathroom. If your bath and basin are understated, then bold, angular brassware will create several focal points. Many ranges have satin and matte finishes, which will provide a softer look. The trend is for taps to be arched and graceful and showerheads as large as possible, especially in a wet room. Keep in mind that Malta’s particularly hard water causes shiny brassware to mark and dull quite badly, so be prepared to

dry and shine the taps regularly. The most desirable types of showers around at the moment are wet rooms. If you wish to use the whole bathroom, then it has to be lined with a waterproof membrane. You could opt for a semiwet room, or a walk-in shower; this will be spacious but with fewer technical considerations. Semi-wet rooms still involve extensive waterproofing of part of the room, while glass panels are used to screen off the rest of the room and contain the spray. Walk-in shower enclosures consist of a tray and side/front panels, but are without a fully closing door – the walk-in area serves as a drying-off space. The latest have frameless glass panels and recessed trays to create a wetroom look.

If you have the budget and space, but a wet room is not for you, then another option is to create a spa-like bathroom with a steam cabinet. If the bathroom doesn't have the space for a separate shower, look at the range of over-bath showers/steam cabinets – some models offer whirlpool bath options as well.

If you want to install a new shower into an existing enclosure, or over the bath, consider a shower panel, which includes a fixed showerhead plus a hand-held spray and various body jets.

There are always going to be two main camps in interior design: those that don’t have to think much about how much things cost and those that do. What many may not realise is that there are a lot of items and interior design tricks that can help transform a low budget room into a stylish and comfortable space. On the other hand, for those that are looking for top quality designer items, they are certainly available in Malta. One thing that should always be kept in mind when trying to achieve a great look in the living room is that style is a mix of luxury with drama. What makes a style work is texture – the soft fused with design austerity. Think of it: true style is something sexy next to something sombre; a mirrored coffee table placed on wooden floor, a strip of art deco patterned wallpaper against a neutral wall, a brightly coloured cushion against a neutral material… The great news is that there are so many stunning pieces available on the market – shops like Cleland & Souchet, Minka, One Two One Interiors, LSD, Stem Interiors, Bo Concept - the list goes on, that supply extremely high end, bona fide designer items. More good news is that the look can also be achieved on a low budget: it is in fact possible. It will never be the same – luxury and good quality will always be felt when present, but it is still possible to create an attractive, personalised style. Interior Designer Emma Armstrong: “It often happens that our very exciting design plans and the reality of budget are not in sync with each other… this can be so frustrating! I know a lot of people who feel that it’s hopeless to try and design a room on a dead low budget. However, this is not the case! We all want high-end items in our home and some do have the luxury of choosing precisely what they want. For those who don’t have a high budget, there are ways of achieving the look you’re after.

TOTAL COST OF THIS ROOM: €4508.85

The key is to know when to splurge and when to save. You have to begin somewhere. One great way to start is to buy that one thing that you categorically fall in love with. It will help with the rest of the design and if need be, you can keep everything else low budget from there on out. However, you always need a starting point. You may see a lime cushion or a purple chair that you love but pass it up because you feel that it’s extra when you’ve got so much else to buy. This is not necessarily the case. There are a lot of ways to improvise, even on the big items, like sofas or flooring. The fact is that you don’t have to spend a lot to get a rich, fabulous look. Very often, accessories will help bring that glamour feel into an item. So a lot of times, spending on the accessories will help the room come together without having to compromise the look you were going for.”

Although it’s important to really like the main items you buy for a room, you don’t always have to love what you buy if it works to enhance what you love. For instance, if a certain side table fills a decorating need (fits that empty corner, makes an interesting statement, adds interest to your wall arrangement), is affordable and you don’t hate it, go ahead and snap it up. You can always replace it when you find something you like better. Time has a way to make you fall in love with those things you don’t initially like. An element of the unexpected will do wonders for your decor - an oversized picture, a shelf hung lower than usual, a red pillow in a green room, a teacup

turned on its side, a wall of family portraits. Don’t be afraid to do the unusual. These are elements that won’t cost much, but will bring out your or the family’s individuality, making it personal. Here, a gypsum shelf was attached to the wall, making what could be a very large bare wall into a feature. Accessorising is very important when keeping a budget low. For instance, if you are really desperate to achieve a look with a sofa but can’t get one that you can afford in the colour or textile that you want, slipcovers or throws are a great way to improvise. A very nice throw could be somewhat expensive, but far less than the sofa of your dreams.

With a slipcover you can instantly transform an outdated relic of some bygone era into something chic and expressive of current trends. There are a variety of styles available now in fantastic fabrics – on the previous page, a lime and brown throw from One Two One Interiors completely livens up the white armchair. You can save hundreds and really update your look this way. Even if the upholstery of your current seating is in fine shape, slipcovers are a great way to change the look of your living room space by season. For example, maybe your current sofa fabric is a deep, rich colour, which looks warm and inviting during fall and winter, but you’d like something fresh for spring and summer.

The same as above goes for the flooring – if you can’t afford real wood or a fitted carpet, improvise with laminate flooring or a high quality rug. R Living have a wide range of laminate floors for a variety of budgets that look very genuine. With all there is to choose from, it’s easy to find a floor within your budget that you’re happy with. Homespace have a range of trendy rugs that certainly won’t break the bank, but will add that needed texture to a space. A rug can also be a unifying factor for your colour scheme. Try tying together the main colour elements of your room with a patterned area rug. A rug like this works best on wood floors or very low pile carpet.

The Palace’s New Room It’s the two questions that hundreds of readers ask, issue after issue. How do you design an elegant room with quality finishings within a budget? How do you merge antiques with a modern backdrop? The design and architectural team at San Anton Presidential Palace has mastered both.

Photos: MAS

From the very first days after taking office, President Eddie Fenech Adami was particularly keen on putting the large space taken up by the pantry to be of better use by turning it into a grand dining room. Though a banqueting hall already existed it was surprisingly smaller than the pantry. Notwithstanding that it contained a large table the dining room was being used also as a reception hall due to lack of space. It was thus decided to develop the pantry into a dining room where local and foreign dignitaries and distinguished guests could be hosted by the Maltese Heads of State.

13260 HW ISSUE 30 fin V1.indd 69

The project that developed over the past months posed a number of interesting challenges. The workmanship and materials used had to be of a particularly high standard but not only. The interior design of the room had to compliment the adjoining halls to maintain a sense of unity whilst evoking a feeling of warmth. Most importantly it had to be a creation of synergy between the interior design, reflecting the contemporary period but not in conflict with the general classical ambience of the Palace.

Overseen by the President and Mrs. Fenech Adami, the project was co-ordinated by Anthony Attard, Secretary to the Presidency. A planning study was prepared by Works Department architects and private designers. During this phase the advice of experienced Palace domestic staff, was sought to ensure that the project would be practical for both daily and official activitities. Adjacent to the new dining room, a small light weight iron and steel glass extension, was constructed by a private contractor to serve as the new pantry with access to both the new banqueting hall and and the hall previously used as a dining room, the latter now utilised as a reception area and sometimes even as a concert chamber. The new dining room measures aproximately fifteen by eight feet meters and seats comfortably 34 guests.

The style of the dining room is classic, contemporary finished with a neutral colour scheme, classical patterned but clean lined drapery and bamboo wooden floor. A fireplace has been added to the room with a marble mantle piece etched with the emblem of Malta. The large ‘Marie Therese’ crystal chandelier and matching four wall lights were custom-made in the Czech Republic. Most of the manual labour was carried out by the very capable San Anton Palace staff, under the technical direction of Michael Bugeja, Works Department Technical Officer and the carpentary section, Works Department. Works included the laying of the parquet flooring, installation of the gypsum partitions, suspended ceiling and electrical system, interior decorating and last but not least the marble work on the fireplace by Works Department employee Abraham Bellia. The turn of the century mahogany furniture was already available at the Palace. The two typical Maltese mahogany gradenzas complimented beautifully the contemporary paintings.

The contemporary element is reflected in the paintings that decorate the walls. After consulting Heritage Malta, five Maltese artists were commissioned to provide five pieces of art to embelish the hall. Noel Attard, Isabelle Borg, John Martin Borg, John Grima and Luciano Micallef produced works depciting The Citadel, the Grand Harbour, Mdina, Maltese Prehistory and an abstract respectively. The contemporary pieces of art bear testimony to the period in which this hall has been given a new lease of life. The final product which has been completed well within the allocated budget has definitely exceeded everyone’s expectations. It has added a new focal point and dimension to the Palace, bringing more light into the central hall, and providing a more symmetrical layout which previously was felt to be direly lacking. Above all, this hall shall provide a taste of early twenty-first century Maltese society, proud of its history and culture but unafraid of boldly staring the future in the face.

Peter’s Secret Garden

Over walls and earth and trees and swinging sprays and tendrils the fair green veil of tender little leaves had crept, and in the grass under the trees and the gray urns in the alcoves and here and there everywhere were touches or splashes of gold and purple and white and the trees were showing pink and snow above his head and there were fluttering of wings and faint sweet pipes and humming and scents and scents. And the sun fell warm upon his face like a hand with a lovely touch. “I Shall Live Forever-and Ever-and Ever!” The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett

Peter Ross is having an everlasting love affair with his spectacular garden. When he talks of it, nothing else seems to matter and he becomes very brightly animated, explaining everything around him as quickly as he can. When asked what his initial inspiration was, he responded, “I wanted it to be like the garden in that book, the Secret Garden.” It can’t be far off. The small wooden door opens and the first thing in sight at the top of the narrow steps is a stone gazebo with carvings and spaces in between the stones to allow glimpses of Filfa. The fact that it was built by Sir Basil Spence makes it all the more alluring. In fact, the property was owned by the notorious Scottish architect - in his last years, reputably stung by a reaction against his work, he retreated to this holiday villa in Fawwara. He nevertheless remained a prolific designer and worked on a number of foreign commissions in this studio.

Another homeowner took over the property after Sir Spence and left it derelict. Fourteen years ago, Mr. & Mrs. Ross purchased the property and found the garden in a severely downtrodden state. “This garden was originally built by the Arabs. It has come a long way since then – fourteen years ago I started from scratch. Form was non existent - there weren’t any passageways or zones, it was all just a mass of soil and weed.” Ross meanders around the garden, pointing out his favourite places and aspects – the rock that’s his personal Henry Moore, the unusual rosemary lawn, the Australian Flame Tree (which is very possibly the only one in Malta) and a myriad of other exotic looking flowers, plants and trees.

The location against the cliff face is a peculiar place for a garden to perch, but has actually proven to make for an excellent backdrop for the garden. “The rock does have a great advantage. Since it is so high and completely shelters one side of the garden, a microclimate is created. With only a north-easterly wind, a garden has the opportunity to become very, very green. Also, plants simply grow out of the rock. Wherever there’s a crack,

there’s something coming out of it. It’s quite extraordinary.” Ross’ knowledge on gardens is infinite – it has been in his family for a long while and he continues to pass on the passion to his own children. He talks about the three s’s that are the basis to a Mediterranean garden: Smell – six weeks of the year, scents like Jasmine and Citrus blossom fill the air. Shade – is absolutely essential and must be

available for eight months of the year. Shape – is important because the heat is so immense in Malta. The garden is so peaceful that it’s magical, with the sound of birds and wind chimes, a view of the rugged cliffs and vast expanse of the sea. It’s a no wonder that Sir Basil Spence snapped up the spot when he laid his architecturally trained eyes on it.

085

13260 HW ISSUE 30 fin V1.indd 85

4/9/08 10:58:09 AM

Ross tells a story of one of Spence’s endowments to the property: “There is a legend in Malta that a giant would appear when it rained. So Spence designed a pool in the shape of a large foot. When the artist Victor Pasmore visited Spence, he created a mural at the bottom of the foot. Very unfortunately, by the time we got here, it was too badly cracked and the mural had come off – we couldn’t save it. It was such a shame. Can you imagine? It would have been like having a Picasso in our garden!”

Sir Basil Urwin Spence was most notably associated with Coventry Cathedral in England and the executive wing of the New Zealand Parliament Buildings in Wellington, nicknamed “The Beehive”. He was also responsible for numerous other buildings in the Modernist/Brutalist style, such as the British Embassy in Rome, the Hyde Park Cavalry Barracks in London, the high-rise Hutchesontown C housing in Glasgow, Edinburgh University Library, and Abbotsinch Airport (now Glasgow Airport), the Trawsfynydd nuclear power station, amongst others.
