EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to issue 43. Everyone’s idea of what makes a dream home is different. For some, it’s a minimalist, monochrome space with high-tech gadgets, while for others, the more cosy and colourful the space is, the better. In this issue we bring you three very different dream homes. The first is a new property in Gharghur, which architecture firm _spacestudio took over while in shell form. In constant dialogue with its discerning owners, the property has been finished to the highest possible specifications and is spectacular in its use of natural materials, sense of space and quite simply, great design. Interior designer Pippa Toledo has allowed us into her own home to view the update of her living room and hall which were inspired by grey velvet. It is fascinating to see the look that an interior designer chooses for her private life. In her own words, the look has been built up over many years and it is first and foremost, a home. The third home is in Gharb, Gozo, a blend of terraced house and house of character. It combines the owners’ desire for a character home with plentiful light — a difficult combination to find — alongside two magnificent outdoor spaces and the pièce de résistance, a black swimming pool. Just as in Pippa’s home, the décor is a testament to the owners’ personal tastes, with belongings collected over the years. We are asking that most difficult of questions: can you create a dream home on a budget? A most definite ‘yes’ is our answer, so read on to find out how. We bring you spectacular, but easy to copy, flower arrangements for summer entertaining, a perfect small garden and a surprising recipe for strawberry pizza. It’s all about good taste.

MARIKA SCHEMBRI IS THE WINNER OF THE TWO BEDSIDE LAMPS COURTESY OF BIG BEN INTERIORS, BIRKIRKARA MARIKA SCHEMBRI “I will be getting married in a month and I can say that thanks to you and your wonderful team, a lot of the ideas I got for my maisonette have been inspired from your magazine HOMEWORKS. “Our home is nearly ready to move in to. I would like to get some ideas on how I can change my back yard, which is quite big, into something that will be cosy, welcoming and relaxing for my future husband and myself. I would like to get your ideas on how I can turn it into a place where we can relax and enjoy a bottle of wine together, especially now that summer is nearly with us. I do wish to thank you and all the HOMEWORKS team once again. Do keep up the excellent work. HOMEWORKS is definitely a library item.”
Readers Wrote: EMILY AQUILINA “I am writing on behalf of my colleagues. We work in a modern, government residential home and we want to decorate a huge corridor. Would you recommend a modern or a classic style? We have to bear in mind that these senior citizens all miss their own homes.” CHRISTINA CHETCUTI “My fiancé and I always look forward to reading each and every issue, especially now that we are decorating our soon-to-be home. We own two dogs and would really like ideas and advice on how to plan an animal-friendly home, what materials to use, how to include pet ‘furniture’ and coordinate it with our own furniture etc. Thank you and keep up the good work.”

LENZING INTERIORS TRENDS FOR 2010: TERRANEUM Inspiration from the beauty of the earth’s elements leads to the creation of a palette of brilliant natural colours abstracted from nature. Sublime texturized surfaces: crooked, scoured, feathery, are picking up on the always overwhelming uniqueness of nature. Materials are assembled in unexpected ways. Recycled fabrics are magnificent and stylish. Terraneum is a hybrid of earth’s resources and technology, with the aim of fulfilling the requests of future mankind.

GREENWORKS
GREENWORKS A spotlight on energy-saving and sustainable interiors trends and products
ECO REDEFINED: Eco-friendly is taking on a new meaning; shifting from focused on the environment (ecological) to focus on the (eco)nomy. Homeowners are looking to economicallyfriendly solutions to their home decor and furnishings purchases, seeking quality and value with an eye toward long-term savings and joy of ownership.
Eco-sustainable materials
Marca Corona have just launched Ecoliving tiles, manufactured to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. These are eco-sustainable building parametres developed by the Green Building Council in the US and applied in 40 countries. It is a voluntary certification system based on the allocation of points for every eco-sustainable requisite of a building. By adding up the points awarded, a total points rating is obtained. Construction using Ecoliving tiles means being awarded LEED points which can prove of vital importance in eco-sustainable architectural projects. Marco Corona Ecoliving tiles are available from CERAMAX in Naxxar.
PHILIPPE STARCK’S REVOLUTIONARY WIND TURBINE FOR HOME USE
Philippe Starck’s highly-anticipated Revolutionair wind turbine is designed for home use. The quadrangular 400W WT model has a power output of 400W and the helicoidal 1KW WT will be able to generate 1KW of power. The turbines will be produced by Pramac and will sell for around €2,500 (quadrangular) and €3,500.
Banish formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and neurotoxin which can be found in furniture as a component of particle and MDF boards, glues, finishes, stains and paints. The alternative is to buy furniture that is manufactured with nontoxic materials, is finished only with natural oils and waxes and to opt for solid wood where possible. Photo: LUBE Group is one of many locally-represented furniture companies which has chosen to exclusively use materials with extremely low formaldehyde emissions in the production of its kitchen structure components, complying with Japanese Industrial Standards.

In the living room, a full-height corner glass wall aids in creating a seamless dialogue with the infinity pool and the garden below. Within such purity of forms, natural materials create warmth and an invitation to both look and feel. The possibility of seeing through and beyond each space is evident on every level. The living room has a view onto the impressive pool and vista. The central core rises up through two storeys. There is a central atrium feeling which has been created by the double height of the inner core, perfectly accentuated by the double-height glass frontage and strategically-placed mirrors. This quality of openness paradoxically allows for extra intimacy and interaction – perfectly suited to a family home – in that it generates a comfortable proximity to any activity. The Bulthaup kitchen has a natural aluminium finish, completely in keeping with the choice of natural materials.

Warming TO GREY
Interior designer Pippa Toledo recently updated the home she has lived in for 30 years. She proves that an update doesn’t mean having to change all of the decorative elements, but it does involve making bold moves Photos: Tonio Lombardi Words: Zillah BugejA

Interior designer Pippa Toledo updated her living room by moving from off-white to dark grey. The transformation took four weeks and included the reconfiguration of four rooms, a new lighting scheme, the removal of a fireplace, two arches being glassed off and the creation of a gypsum cabinet, a new wardrobe and a new bedroom.
The central space of the expansive living room typifies Pippa’s current design signature: clean lines and expanses of bold hues. 034

This property stands out by blending in. Although its main feature is a magnificent black swimming pool, it was chosen for its chameleon-like properties. The home is an alchemical mix of Gozitan rustic and Gothic elegance Photos: MIKE ROSS Words: Zillah BugejA INTERIOR STYLING: DUO DESIGNERS 041

The pool isn’t completely black – dark blue mosaic tiles line the perimeter – and it has a more reflective effect than an emphasis on its dark depths. The owners learned by trial and error which plants could withstand the strong winds that whip down the valley. The courtyard allows for outdoor dining in a serene setting. The garden gate with glass beads which signals the entrance into the mystical pool area was brought over from England. The owners are adept at creating exotic, sensual touches throughout the home.

The spacious kitchen is the ideal setting for entertaining. The owners sometimes run cookery classes to promote Gozitan and Mediterranean cuisine. Adjacent to the kitchen, what was once a donkey’s stable is now used as an office.

while also resulting in better resistance to weathering and material failure over time. This is not meant to undermine the importance of good, reliable materials; rather it is meant to drive the point home that there are other very important variables in the equation of creating a dream home, such as colour palettes, the combination of textures and most importantly of all, detail. Make a mental note of your favourite homes. Mine are not normally the most expensive buildings. I find great joy in looking at simple buildings, with their clean and well-proportioned lines that work seamlessly together. Some of the best residences built outside our shores are social housing projects that have been designed and constructed with the tightest of budgets. How does this translate into practical design terms? Here are a few design tips that I come across in my daily professional life and that could
1] Our brains register the geometry of a space first and proportions or particular features may really compromise a space and interrupt the natural volumetric balance – in short, try to stick to clean lines and

consistency of form. A stone feature in a character house is an asset that can be maximized to great effect.
2] Maximise your assets, whether it is natural light, a view or a stone feature in a character house. 3] In conversions of older houses, use new materials wisely in order to bring out older features more prominently – do not try to compete with the older, more permanent features but try to balance them out. 4] Keep your room backdrop simple; create those splashes of interest through specific items within a harmonious colour palette. 5] Think of practical flexibility, making space for activities as they occur and as the need arises, for instance using items that may be extended as necessary and concealing unwanted items to remove any clutter. (Clutter may really deter from appreciating a space for its real worth.) 6] Good lighting can make or break a space – besides being about the fitting itself, it is also about the fitting’s position and the type of light that is formed in order to create different ambiences within the home. 7] Lastly, a dream home is only as good as it functions. Think long-term – more often than not, long-term savings end up being much higher than for instance, is an invaluable asset.

CACTUS CENTREPIECE Use this on a dinner table setting, with any combination of flowers to suit your colour scheme. The cactus leaves act as an unusual base. • Lay a length of tulle or other fabric as a runner before you start assembling the centrepiece. • Use cactus leaves as the foundation, with flowers on if possible. Use a piece of cardboard to hold them. On top of the cactus leaves place some green foam. • Completely cover the foam with green leaves. • Add flowers of your choice. • Wrap some florist’s wire round a cork to make a spiral, insert into foam. The flowers used in this arrangement were green carnations, yellow roses, pink chrysanthemums, red anthurium, white chrysanthemums with pink edge, galaz leaves, astromelia and yellow solidago. A tip from Alistair: when cutting cactus leaves, do not do so in the sun otherwise they will shoot their spikes at you.
FLOATING FLOWERS These decorations can be used on a table, at the side of a pool or floating, perhaps adding a candle for the evening. • Choose a beautiful glass bowl for a bubble effect, perhaps a fish bowl or hurricane lamp. • Add some water and simply cut gerberas to fill the bowl. You may colour the water with food colouring as an effect.

TALL TWIGS This arrangement is ideal for a corner where you want to create an impact. • Choose a vase that is quite heavy so that it will have the required stability. • Place foam within the vase. • Arrange the tall curly twigs in the vase and decide on flower placement. • Tie flower tubes to the twigs with organdie ribbon. • Cut gerberas to fit tubes and insert. • Arrange more flower heads in the vase to cover the foam.

“One or two good, and usually simple, ideas can create a pleasant little garden that works as a satisfying whole.
Gardening notebook CARING FOR THE GARDEN IN JUNE AND JULY AND PLANNING AHEAD FOR AUTUMN Summer annuals like Zinnias, Asters and Tagetes will require frequent watering. Keep the leaves of Zinnias dry to avoid mildew. Other June flowers that require frequent watering are Dahlias, Jasmine, Carnations, Gaillardias and Verbenas, however water Roses sparingly. Keep Pelargoniums in a cool place for longer flowering. The last transplants of other summer annuals can be done now. Any bulbs should be lifted, dried, cleaned and stored in a dry peat in a cool place. Only leave bulbs in the ground where no summer watering takes place. Take cuttings of Hibiscus and Oleander. Pot Chrysanthemums in large pots for flowering in November. Spray every 10 days against pests. Water citrus trees in 10 - 15 day intervals.
Curved lines create a sense of movement across the plot. The garden walls, steps and pool surround are in Gozo marble. Commercial-grade non-slip tiles for the decking blend with existing tiles in the courtyard. Excavation of the plot and creation of the new garden and pool took three months.
Water vegetables, but keep water off leaves. Sow cabbages, cauliflowers, broccoli, kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts, leeks, turnips, spinach and radish.
IN JULY Sow Stocks and Wallflowers in seedbeds. Water all fruit trees. For other plants, conserve whatever moisture remains in the soil by using mulch with peat, well-rotted manure, straw or black polythene. Take leaf cuttings of Begonia Rex, Gloxinia, Saintpaulia and Sanseveria. Water, hoe and spray fruit and vegetables. Protect shoots of newly budded trees from strong dry winds. Sow vegetables for autumn and winter, e.g. carrots, leeks, Brussels sprouts, spinach, cabbages, turnips, broccoli and cauliflowers.
