EDITOR’S LETTER HW
I remember very clearly back in 2004 when BoConcept first opened in Malta. We covered it in the second issue of HOMEWORKS. I remember how excited everyone was at the launch - to see this customised, coordinated and affordable Danish-designed furniture. Malta had never seen anything like it at the time. And I remember seeing the parquet flooring and thinking - so it can be done in Malta, despite everyone’s insistence that the climate is too humid for parquet, best stick to stone or tiles. Within a year, I began to see parquet everywhere - and it wasn’t just architects or interior designers that were using it. Homeowners were taking it upon themselves to get that look. Now parquet is as common as any other flooring. The same thing is beginning to happen with wooden wall cladding, either in solid wood or wood veneer, with a striking result. We are influenced by different countries, eras and movements, captivated by the styles we see in international magazines. It only takes a few adventurous local designers and architects to take the plunge before other people also take that weary step to realising their own dream look. This issue focuses on two key influences on local interiors at the moment: early 20th century and Scandinavian, which is what our featured homes are themed around this issue. The two looks can be explored in more detail on page 047 in ‘Achieving the Look’. The rest of this HOMEWORKS edition celebrates spring in a big way with Vinny Piscopo’s ‘Chime for Springtime’ on page 072 and ‘Nuptials at Home’ on page 078. Finally, the warm weather has arrived - enjoy the sunshine!

Private Office
“The flexibility of the home office and the disappearance of the study have created a new type of furniture that has its place even in the smallest apartment: the private office, a small, light and chic work console for the laptop. Gone are the days of a separate and selfcontained study for which there was no more room left anyway, at least after the first child arrived. And while the old study may also have once had the charm of a junk room, modern workplaces – open, visible, and in plain sight – should be more stylish, lighter and cooler than the old, heavy and imposing writing desks.”
Black Celebration: All cats are grey in the dark
“The classic colour is back: Black in matte and high gloss for texturally strong fabrics and furniture classics. Following a very long white phase in interior design, black is again setting a new tone in the interplay of colours. Whether high gloss or matte, black is chic, neutral and fits perfectly with other colours. It is really easy for decorative ideas or other furniture to attract attention in a milieu of black furniture or fabrics – they literally shine. Especially furniture classics are given a new lease on life by the consistently black tinge. The new black trend can also be seen in fabrics that are brought to life by interesting textures.
Naturally un-natural
“Innovative materials and coverings are finding their way into a furniture world agleam with a silvery shimmer. Leather doesn’t always have to be brown, chairs don’t always have to be wood, and covering fabrics don’t always have to be woven out of natural fibres: fine hightech fibres and lacquered metal stand for modernity and a forward-looking approach. Sofas wrapped in silver, cushions with a metallic shimmer, ultra-light plastics and thinly formed concrete, high-gloss varnishes or woods with an unfamiliar finish all look as if they have come straight out of the laboratory.” 019

BROOM BAR STOOLS Philippe Starck has designed the Broom bar stools for Emeco, made from 75% waste polypropylene and 15% waste wood fibres that are swept off the factory floor. Emeco’s aim is to prevent waste from being manufactured in the first place. Instead they use discarded materials to make things that last.
A SPOTLIGHT ON ENERGY SAVING AND SUSTAINABLE INTERIORS, TRENDS AND PRODUCTS
NOTES ROOM DIVIDERS Italian designer Luca Nichetto has just launched the upholstered ‘Notes’ room dividers for Offecct Lab, which sandwich a soundabsorbing layer of felt that’s made using textile waste from the Offecct factory floor. The sound panel doesn’t have to be fixed on the wall, yet acts like a free-standing object. The pieces are still prototypes and will or won’t be added to Offecct’s portfolio permanently depending upon market feedback.
SURFACE TABLE PLUMEN 002 The Plumen 002 is an atmospheric, low-energy bulb developed especially for ambient spaces. The 7W bulb gives off an equivalent to a 30W incandescent, so it uses 75% less energy than a traditional light bulb. The neon sculptor Tony Greer created the sinuous form by blowing the glass tube like a bottle, whilst still completing the loop needed for the light technology to function.
Dutch designer Rick Tegelaar has launched the constructed Surface table, which is made from residual plywood sourced from furniture factories. Beautifully crafted into a fishbone pattern, the plywood scraps come together to create strong, finely crafted tabletops whose size and thickness are unrestricted by the size of the wood.
CURRENT TABLE Marjan van Aubel’s Current Table combines utility with energy saving technology in a minimal design. The table charges handheld devices using energy stored in its coloured-glass surface. Developed in collaboration with Swiss solar cell company Solaronix, the table’s glass surface is embedded with photovoltaic cells that use the properties of colour to create an electrical current. The cells collect and store energy from indirect sunlight using a photosynthesis-like process. This means that the table can be charged indoors —the first piece of furniture of its kind to do this. 021

This issue is all about influences and the effect different eras, countries and movements have on our homes. We begin with Art Nouveau & Art Deco Nuances In Sliema on page 024. Architect Edward Said transforms his own two bedroom apartment in the heart of Sliema, embracing its ‘1930’s Malta’ features. CVC Architecture turns a challenge into a prominent architectural highlight through clever design and detailing in a St. Julians elevated maisonette (page 032) while DAAA HAUS refurbishes a ten year-old Tigné Point apartment into an understated contemporary chic space on page 040. 023

rchitect Edward Said is positively smitten with his newly restored fireplace.
‘It’s one of the first things you see upon entrance of the apartment, and is actually one of the reasons I bought the property. People have converse reactions to it - they either love it or hate it, which I love in itself. It hasn’t been used since 1960 so it was quite complicated to get the flue in working order. I can’t tell you how pleased I am that it works!’ For as long as he can remember, Edward has wanted to purchase an old property in Sliema. It’s no surprise since he was born and bred there, and is the founder of the Sliema Heritage Society.

‘In my line of work I don’t look for perfections, but rather imperfections. There’s a lot to be said for sustainable living with certain flaws, but this apartment is much older than I am… so there’s respect there.’
‘For years, I looked at places outside of Sliema, but something deep down always told me that I would remain here. Once you’ve been brought up here it’s difficult to leave with no return in sight. I found this place after looking in Sliema for only a short while. I love the precise location of it because I’m so comfortable here - only a few hundred metres from the street I was brought up on. The style of the old houses around here have definitely preconditioned my love for architecture - this mix of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Eclecticism, which I associate so much with Sliema. The architects of the time must have had great fun designing them! Here was a battleground
026
of styles, which I learned a lot about when I was starting out as an architectural student. Back in the late 1990s the local council had expressed an interest in restoring the air raid shelter beneath Dingli Circus. It’s ironic that I would eventually buy a place right here. The exterior of the apartment building is classical, while inside it’s “1930’s Malta” with Art Nouveau nuances.’ The first thing Edward wanted to do to the apartment was take advantage of the high ceilings, bountiful natural light and profusely airy feel to the space. ‘I was brought up in a

classical house full of antiques. The projects that I work on as an architect are the polar opposite of this - mostly minimal. I wanted that balance of the two.’ Perit Francis Griscti Soler was nominated for an award when he had designed the block in 1930 for his solutions to the extremely angular site. What one apartment lacked, the other gained; some had generous frontages but a smaller internal area, while others had larger rooms but a lesser frontage. This particular apartment was graced with high ceilings, large windows, and two front entrance doors. ‘Sliema properties were mostly used as summer residences, so very often you would
have these two entrances so that the foyer could be divided from the rest of the dwelling by closing a large internal door. This way, the man of the house could still conduct his business, while his family would have the privacy of the rest of the house. I believe that’s what was intended here. In fact, I have placed my personal office at the entrance, but I have moved the elegant concertina door so that the living / dining / kitchen area is larger, yet can still be closed off when needed.’ It’s this flexibility that has allowed Edward to come to peace with the lack of the garden that he had originally wanted.

The recently-restored fireplace, which was left almost entirely intact from the 60s and which helped make up the Architect’s mind to purchase the property
Upon entrance, visitors catch sight of the piano and study, as opposed to a kitchen, which is usually the case with typical modern apartments. These doors also allow for climatisation, since a healthy airflow can take place through the windows. The relocation of this large opening, as well as the replacement of the ceilings over the bedroom and bathroom were somewhat large structural changes, yet despite not being touched since 1938, other elements of the apartment were easier, such as the relatively undamaged embossed floral glazing, the almost entirely intact Maltese patterned tile flooring, and the beloved fireplace. ‘There are one or two cracked glass panes and a few fractured floor tiles, but in my line of work I don’t look for perfections, but rather imperfections. There’s a lot to be said for sustainable living with certain flaws, but this apartment is much older than I am… so there’s respect there.’ An element that Edward felt definitely needed to be changed was some of the “institution windows” with sills at eye-level height overlooking one of the three yards. ‘This gave me a sense of claustrophobia so I had to lower them.’ The furniture is a delightful mix of old and new. The pendant light in the living area was found by Edward in a skip right outside the front door of the block. The kitchen pendant lamp was in his aunt’s house in the 60s, repainted by his car sprayer and rewired by a friend. Gifts from family members and bargains from charity shops and church bazaars mingle with the new designer furniture pieces (most Art Deco style-inspired), creating a highly interesting and eclectic collection.

‘I wanted new furniture, but definitely not all of it. Over the years I have gathered objects, and I can’t help it - I still do. Occasionally in my work when I encounter a property full of old objects, I can’t help but be totally intrigued by them. Recycling gives me great satisfaction. The secret to collecting old things is not to have too much. I was brought up with things everywhere, and I think this is the difference between antiquity and retro-inspired contemporary.’ Architect Edward Said has found his home. If the walls could speak, they would tell him about things his historically-inclined mind would be intrigued in hearing. In the meantime, he’s content enough with being surrounded by the beautiful remnants of their experiences. 030

T
he location of this property, as well as the large open plan kitchen / living / dining space that leads out to a substantially large terrace, were the two main elements that had initially attracted this homeowner. He knew that with some careful planning and a reorganisation of spaces, this property could become his perfect home. As with many other new properties on the market, this elevated maisonette was in a partly finished state when purchased, with an existing floor already laid and the preparation of basic services installed. The challenges: With the bedrooms situated at the front of the house near the point of entry, it meant that upon entrance, one would have to pass by the ‘sleeping quarters’ in order to reach the main living area of the home. Also, although a relatively large property, storage space was initially non-existent. Further, the planned ensuite bathroom to the master bedroom offered quite a dilemma due to its awkward shape and lack of space to route plumbing and other services. CVC Architecture began by immediately addressing the primary challenge of the entrance route. With the finished flooring already in place, it meant that any new materials selected needed to work well with the existing ones. Natural oak panels were designed along the walls, starting at the main entrance, leading through the house and down the short flight of steps into the main entertainment area. This timber surface transforms into a volume of the same material forming the kitchen cabinetry, whilst also screening the wash-up area of the kitchen from being in plain view when entering the living area from the hallway. The oak cladding also serves to define a clear route that leads the visitor down into the living and dining area as it widens drastically into the hallway. Furthermore, a lobby space has been created before entering the guest bathroom, using partition walls also clad in oak. The doorways to the bedrooms were designed to appear virtually invisible, as part of the oak walls. The storage issue was resolved by providing various multi-purpose storage units, whilst also hiding electrical distribution panels. A concealed light source was installed above to create a diffused warm glow along the entire route in the evenings. The large living area with a square layout occupying almost 80 square metres was designed as the heart of the home. This area accommodates a fully equipped kitchen, an open study, the living room and also the dining room. Two doorways lead out onto a large terrace, which has been designed as a continuation of the comfortable living space internally, therefore accommodating a barbecue grill area with an outdoor bar counter, an external dining area and a lounge area. Working well with the natural looking hard stone floor, the oak is used 035

again to clad large areas of the wall in both the living room and the kitchen. This cladding once again has a functional use - mainly concealing service shafts windows which were of no use, forming a television unit with space to accommodate hi-fi equipment, and also serving as kitchen cabinetry to conceal built-in appliances. A large three-metre long island defines the boundary of the kitchen area while also providing space for breakfast and informal dining, inclusive of a hob for cooking directly opposite the living room. The social aspect of the design layout ensuring that the homeowner could cook whilst engaged with guests and also in close proximity to the living room - was a primary requirement, and was catered for by locating this island centrally and utilising different finishes on the surfaces; a
striking dark grey marble worktop in contrast to the clean white surfaces used in the other areas of the kitchen. A clutter-free television/multimedia unit was created in the living room to conceal all equipment, whilst an open casual workspace was created adjacent to this area with a large part of the wall transformed into a book case. Raw steel plates were selected as the material for the wide span shelving. Whilst enabling a wide clear span due to their strength, the ultra thin shelves seemingly float effortlessly compared to traditional shelving. This raw steel was also used for other customdesigned elements, such as the staircase railings, which blends very well with the other materials; the grey marble, the natural oak, and the hard stone flooring. This juxtaposition of materials completes the palette used internally, creating a contemporary classic timeless feel. 037

A fireplace is located centrally between the doorways to the terrace, creating a focal point at the end of the large room upon entrance to the living area. Here, black back-sprayed glass was used to clad the flue cover above; a clean chic finish which ties in with the cuboid extractor hood directly over the island in the same surface finish. The volume of the fireplace internally is reflected externally on the terrace with a custom-built island, which protrudes from the wall. This houses a large grill, sink, worktop, and storage space for outside entertaining. Its central position also serves to define the dining and lounge spaces externally on either side. Meanwhile, texture and warmth was created with the straight wall’s custom-designed timber cladding, which also serves to conceal the flushing cistern and the doorway. The result of this clever planning and reorganisation of spaces was just what the homeowner ordered - a huge open plan living area totally conducive to easy entertainment. The challenge of the bedroom layout upon entrance was not only well met, but has become a unique focal point to the house, immediately giving visitors the sense that they have entered an astutely designed home. 038

hen the young business couple homeowners bought this ten year-old Tigné Point apartment, they commissioned Daaa Haus Project Director Keith Pillow to refurbish it into a modern, comfortable and luxury home. Keith, ‘We were lucky to work on this project since the homeowners (who are something of connoisseurs) really appreciate the finer things in life. This meant believing in beautiful, raw materials, designer furniture, and design that will last.’ The Daaa Haas project team went about redesigning the apartment layout to accommodate a larger entertaining area, as well as a hidden and compact, yet fully-equipped high tech kitchen. They created a hall and divided the apartment between a night and day area. Maximising storage space was another element high on the homeowners’ priority list. The designers transformed the conventional bedroom layouts by eliminating all furniture except for the bed. This was made possible by dividing the room into smaller spaces, using reflective glass and therefore creating areas such as the walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bath. The homeowner, ‘We were really after a haven feel for the bedroom. We work a lot, so being comfortable and relaxed in our bedroom is imperative. In fact, we even went a step further and installed a seamless television in the glass wall of the wardrobe. Fitted carpet ensures that it’s soft underfoot and it also really cosies up the room. The result is pure bliss, actually!’ The apartment is fully equipped with top-of-the-range technology, including full home automation throughout, mood sensor lighting, high tech appliances, and the latest home entertainment equipment. Health heat infrared panels keep the apartment a comfortable temperature, as well as ensure that there are no unsightly units.

The Daaa Haas project team went about redesigning the apartment layout to accommodate a larger entertaining area, as well as a hidden and compact, yet fully-equipped high tech kitchen. They created a hall and divided the apartment between a night and day area. Maximising storage space was another element high on the homeowners’ priority list

Stefania Mercieca, ‘While we used a great deal of different materials in various finishes, a lot of attention to detail has been put in the selection of them to ensure that the duo-tone colour mood was kept throughout. It was also very important here that light reflection would work well and be optimised.’ Materials such as the different finishes of Calacatta and brown leather finish marble, Spessart oak, silk and wool carpets, velvet, and fine hides / leathers give the apartment a true feeling of warmth. Meanwhile, the muted browns, greys, matte black with touches of white, copper and yellow juxtaposed against the raw materials ensure an understated, urban luxurious feel. Further elements, such as the Oberflex wood veneered wall lining, engineered oak flooring, copper tinted mirrors, matte black powder coated bathroom fittings, and micro cement finished bathroom walls offer the space the chic contemporary look that the particular location of Tigné Point lends itself to. Large windows on either side of the living space offers a view of green flora on one side, with a weave of textured travertine walls on the other. The result of this openness on either side is a flood of natural light, as well as a striking contrast of green against the muted duo-tone of the apartment interior. The feel is reminiscent of a modern Parisian apartment and is further invoked by the objet d’art that line the focal-piece shelves and the pop of playfulness from the yellow dining chairs. 043

ACHIEVING THE LOOK
HOMEWORKS BRINGS YOU IDEAS ON HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVE TWO DIFFERENT STYLES EXTREMELY POPULAR RIGHT NOW
THE RETRO LOOK
The retro look is always in fashion in home interiors because design is ever influenced by the past. Yet “retro” can be interpreted in many different ways. Defined simply, the word refers to the revival of any past style, although the look which is currently most influential is early 20th century. Here, HOMEWORKS uses an example of the ‘VV Retro Pad’, part of Valletta Vintage by Architect by Chris Briffa.

IS MOULD DRIVING YOU UP THE WALL? Mould can grow on almost any substance when moisture such as condensation is present. Moulds, when they produce, make spores which can be carried by air currents and when these land on a moist surface they begin to grow. Mould feeds on nutrients such as cellulose which can be found in most papers and paints. Crown Trade Steracryl has a proven pedigree in the prevention of mould growth. Stringent testing by the PRA (The Paint Research Association) has found it to be an effective mould inhibitor over long periods of time.
It’s not just paint.

HOME STYLE HW THE RETRO LOOK... GO VINTAGE
Search vintage shops, car boot sales, bazaars and auctions for old furniture to then repurpose or reupholster.
TRY MINIMALISM
If you prefer modern minimalism but love the retro look, choose just a few retro pieces to create focal points in the room, such as a striking chair or a dramatic light. Don’t clutter with a lot of furniture.
SOLIDS & PATTERNS
If you’re trying the modern approach to retro, mix and match solid colours with patterns to play down the big and bold.
CIRCULAR LINES
Curved lines and circular forms in furniture are classic characteristics.
ONE COLOUR PALETTE
Using too many colours can make a retro style home look chaotic, as the look is already naturally eclectic. Try to stick with one colour palette to avoid this.

WHITE
Scandinavian design is largely about beginning with a blank canvas and then bringing in colours through the furniture and decor.
LAYERED TEXTURES
Due to Scandinavia’s cold weather, textures used tend to be those that help bring in visual warmth, such as leather, fur and natural textiles, like linen and cotton.

t’s great to see how the clear blue sky actually lightens up the mood and puts a smile on everyone’s faces. With spring bringing in the much-needed sunshine, this is the ideal time to get the gardens going. After such a wet winter there are going to be a lot of overgrown weeds, which make the garden look shabby and unappealing. The first step is definitely to de-weed the garden - either by spraying them with weed killer, or by having someone patiently chop them down to a manageable size using a grass cutter, followed by properly working the ground with a typical homesized rotavator. 073

The next step is to consider what needs uprooting, as now is the ideal time for any plant/tree reallocation. Now the fun can begin! Being spring there is a lot to do, starting with planting bulbs that are available in various colours, such as Dahlias, Gladioli and Liliums. Start prepping bedding plants to fill empty spaces with colour. Ideally once you plant your seasonals, administer fertilizer once a week for the initial three weeks to encourage rapid growth in the initial stages. Be sure to fertilize all the plants at this time of year, as many come back to life with new shoots rapidly producing. An option for those with busy lifestyles is to administer a slow-release fertilizer that helps give the plants what they need while leaving more time to enjoy them. This is available in the form of small balls, which can either be mixed with compost when re-potting or when planting new bedding plants. When watered, they will
By placing lavender plants close to chillout areas it will help keep mosquitoes away, while Rosemary helps to keep the house fly at bay. slowly release nutrients over a period of time, ensuring that the plants get what they need to make them happy. Don’t forget the herb garden. Nowadays there are a substantial amount of new herbs (such as apple mint and chocolate mint) on the market, so if you like experimenting, this might be an option for this spring. By placing lavender plants close to chill-out areas it will help keep mosquitoes away, while Rosemary helps to keep the house fly at bay. Try including these two aromatic herbs in centrepieces
for more peaceful lunches and dinners. A member of the daisy family, Plant Felicias - with its beautiful blue flowers - loves the sun, so the more it gets, the merrier it is. It can be used to create passageway borders, but also does well in balcony container pots. Having such a powerful sun keeping compost moist in small container pots can prove challenging. By adding waterretaining gel with the compost when planting, or at least covering the top of the compost with wood bark or pebbles, will help avoid direct sun contact with the soil. So dust your sunbeds and clean your barbecues - the time is quickly approaching for some lovely meals in our nurtured gardens. Happy gardening!

MARIA The charming elegance of Rosenthal’s ‘Maria’ table set originates mainly from the neo-classical style and the balance of classical and romantic elements. A silver tea set from 1815 was the inspiration for ‘Maria’ when the company founder, Philip Rosenthal Sr., acquired the tea set on a journey to England. Named after Philip Rosenthal’s wife Maria, it had grown to a large set by the 1920s and 30s, with about 170 different pieces. To this day, ‘Maria’ is the most substantial table set of the Rosenthal classic and is complete with a variety of vases, bowls and candle holders. PLANNING The first five things to consider when planning the catering for a wedding at home are: How many guests will you be catering for? Is it a morning or evening wedding? What kind of setup is needed? (i.e. casual, formal, summer by the pool)? Will it be plated, a reception, or a station (i.e. porchetto or a barbecue)? up buffet (so that people can start to mingle around and have more interaction). If the bride and groom opt for late entertainment with a long spell where guests will be drinking and dancing without eating, we recommend serving some sort of after-party items, such as mini burgers, mini hot dogs, or even a small cheese table with some dips and other condiments.
THE FOOD The ingredients we use very much depends on the client’s needs and logistics, but what always proves very popular is some kind of cold pass-around items at the start of the wedding, such as smoked fish, shellfish, finger sandwiches, small tartlets and bellini’s. In terms of hot food, clients often opt for various kebabs (chicken, lamb and beef). Popular stations are the Sushi Table, Porchetto Table, Pasta Parmeggiana Live Table, Crepe Table, Roast Beef and BBQ Tables. When it comes to a plated wedding, clients normally begin with four to five cold canapés along with some sort of welcome drink until all the guests have arrived. This is followed by a four-course meal, with a cold starter (such as a carpaccio of fish, shellfish or a fish terrine), followed by a soup, pasta or risotto. The most popular main courses are usually beef dishes, such as a fillet, finished by a plated dessert or a stand-
HOW TO The first step to engage us for home food catering is to decide on the date (which is normally linked to the church chosen if one is being used). Decide on the number of guests that will be invited and what kind of event it will be - plated, stand-up, etc. Our sales team will then go through the various elements with the client - menus, pricing, logistics, the wedding cake, etc. This will be followed by one of our chefs and F&B representative going to see the site. Give them your ideas of what you’re after and let them guide you through their experience of what’s best logistic-wise, keeping in mind your needs and ideas. Finally, a quotation will be given. Once this is approved, our sales representative will draft a timing plan, which includes delivery of goods, service, and cleaning after the wedding.

AT A GLANCE: 5 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING • How many guests will you be catering for? • Is it a morning or evening wedding? • What will be the theme? • What kind of setup is needed? (i.e. casual, formal, summer by the pool)? • Will it be plated, a reception, or a station (i.e. porchetto or a barbecue)? • Where would the caterers be working from (the kitchen or an alternative set-up)? 081
HW CUISINE & WINE Bill Hermitage’s Wine Recommendations:
Wine for Weddings
Bottles, slate tags from BUTLERS | Side nest table from Manor House
“Accurately marrying wine and food together at weddings, unless it’s a sit down meal, is something that’s almost impossible to get 100% right; unless you stick to a particular style of food throughout, or have themed tables with accompanying wines alongside them. However, in most instances I would assume that people will go for an assortment of foods, so that all of their guests find something to enjoy, and that makes choosing the wines fairly straight forward. All you need to do is provide your guests with assorted styles of well-made wines that are easy drinking and good quality; and fit within your budget. The six main wine styles I would recommend, so that you’ll cater for everyone’s taste buds, should include a dry white, a fruity dry rosé, a medium-bodied red, a full-bodied red, a sweet white (for the desserts) and something sparkling to celebrate the cutting of the cake. My actual Delicata ‘six wine selection’ would therefore be as follows: For my dry white wine a Grand Vin de Hauteville Viognier; a crisp, delicious fruity white that’s ideal as an aperitif or with any seafood, white meat or poultry-based canapés; my rosé
082
wine choice would be the Medina Rosé Grenache Cabernet; an easy drinking, fruity wine that’s good with most savoury food items or equally good on its own. My choice for a medium-bodied red would be the Medina Sangiovese - a soft, spicy red with delicious ripe fruit flavours that’s perfect with most meat, poultry and cheese-based bites. My stronger full-bodied red, to go with any spicy meat dishes or strong cheeses, would be the Grand Vin de Hauteville Shiraz Cabernet. To accompany your sweet treats a chilled Classic Collection Casella Moscato will be perfect and finally, the semi-sparkling medium rosé Gellewza Frizzante is a dual purpose wine that makes a great welcome drink or cake-cutting celebratory wine when served nice and cold in fine elegant flute glasses. With regards to the best vintage of these wines, purchase the latest / freshest vintage available at the time of your actual event.”
