EDITOR’S LETTER

This Issue. This issue celebrates beautifully modern homes that started life many years, even centuries, ago. With a new appreciation of the past, there is now a mood within architecture to work with the old rather than simply erase it and start afresh. And as the houses in this issue show, the end result can be ground-breaking and stunning. I hope you find it inspirational to see what can be done, on a grand scale as is the case with the award-winning home designed by Architecture Project but also more intimately, as can be found in Eliza Costabel’s home, where she has simply, but cleverly, tempered the old stone walls of her Birgu residence to create a space that has bucket loads of feel-good factor. This issue we also look at the bathroom which is now one of the key rooms in the house, a place where we go not just to get clean but also to enjoy some ‘me’ time that relaxes and re-energises us. Creating a bathroom is a major task, but as with any creative endeavour in the home, it can be enjoyable and rewarding to choose the products that will make one’s ideal space. In our Bathroom Special, we offer expert advice as well as showcasing the latest looks and products. Enjoy!

Issue 89 was jam packed with useful information and I most especially liked reading about the architects’ own makeover and seeing how she integrated a wall unit spanning two rooms over two floors! Unfortunately, so much of our attention in the living area centers around the television. What can we do to integrate a television but not have it be the focus? Are there any rules one can follow? I will shortly be attempting to do a feature wall in my living area. At present, it’s plain new Maltese stone but I’d like to add texture and colour to warm it up. I would like to see some ideas as to what I can possibly do to keep the focus on the wall and the space and off the television!’

AND THE WINNER IS... It’s been award season with both the Red Dot Awards and European Product Design Awards (ePDA). Both aim to recognise and celebrate designers’ creativity, with jurors poring over hundreds of products before making their choice.

The well-known Red Dot Award for Product Design features 1797 products and as well as Honourable Mentions and Winners, there are 69 products that are considered Best of the Best. For 2018 these include Symbiotic Weave from Guangzhou ABO Food& Beverage Management C for Chuan’s Kitchen, an organic filigree structure made from bamboo materials that references an ancient Chinese craft and Ghost Linear outdoor lighting by Milan’s Marc Sadler which features no visible lighting fixture.

The European Product Design Awards (ePDA) is just in its second year and the 20 categories range from children’s products to Designs for Society. Among the winners was this Caruso music cabinet by Italy’s Paola Cappello in which the speaker recalls old gramophones but is entirely digital, and Tekio, a lighting system from UK’s Studio Make Believe, that is made from flexible structures covered by paper modules and held together by magnets.

site&space Lisa Gwen was one of the team who created the ‘Antiporta’ installation that is currently showing at this year’s Venice Biennale. Here she explains how it all came together… There are four, tall, glorious windows, that open onto a shallow balcony that sits atop one of the smaller canals in Venice. What can only be described as the sala nobile on the first floor of Palazzo Mora, in the ‘zona Cannaregio’, is a high-ceilinged room which allows for a phenomenal amount of natural light to seep into the space, bouncing and diffusing across its four corners. This is the light of the Impressionists. This is the light one chases and aches over. This is the light that architects and designers build for, and around. There was no doubt – that this was the space. This was where the ‘Antiporta’ had to be placed. The terrazzo flooring, the lunette-shaped windowpanes, the beamed ceiling – so many elements at play, elements which possessed a likeness, or rather a reminiscence, which was not entirely unMaltese. This is the context in which the Antiporta installation, by Chris Briffa Architects was imagined, and then placed. The concept was simple: a lightweight metal structure and frame would complement and juxtapose the imposing balcony windows. Sheer fabrics were selected to mimic the varying transparencies and translucencies of the antiporta’s glass textures. They hang, in panels, enclosing the structure without smothering it. A red velvet cushioned stool, stands in silo, alongside a deliciously stressed yet highly ornate narrow strip of carpeting, inviting visitors inside the ethereal chambers, wherein a four-minute clip plays, on loop. The distinct ringing of a bell is audible throughout the sala; as are voices, speaking in a familiar Maltese tongue. The story of the antiporta is explained, narrated, somewhat nostalgically. Speakers describe its function, its purpose, as well as its vanishing tradition – hence the catchphrase: ‘a fading negotiation’. Building on the success of the Gallarija Miftuha project, presented by CBA in 2013, the Antiporta installation - showing in the Time Space Existence exhibition, within the Venice Architecture Biennale programme until November 25 - highlights one of the prevalent elements of traditional Maltese architecture. Like the closed, timber balcony, the antiporta too is disappearing from our architectural fabric, in that it is no longer an element which is consciously being incorporated into contemporary design. The Venice project is, therefore, more than a mere installation on show for the duration of the Biennale - it is an investigation; it is the beginning of a research project or a works in progress which will ultimately allow CBA to look into the properties of the antiporta, and how it may be adapted and incorporated into contemporary builds. A re-interpretation of the antiporta and the creation of a new prototype will ultimately extend the life of this artefact, which, CBA, still considers relevant and pertinent to Maltese residential architecture. Having said that, the representation and portrayal of the story of the antiporta, into an accessible, three-dimensional structure within an ‘alien’ context, was not an easy feat to deliver. The antiporta is a staple element characterising Malta’s traditional residential architecture – and although it can be found in other countries and contexts, it hardly possesses the same qualities, function or even inherent element of performance, as it does in a Maltese context. It took three site visits, to determine the correct space in which the installation would be placed; to design the structure, to consider the practicality of the materials and textures which would layer the piece, to anticipate visitor flow, experience and engagement, and for the whole to stand harmonious against the light and sound of the existing environment. A thousand considerations and conversations later, translated into a structure which, at first glance, appears effortless and simple – one which ‘fits’ in so well within this space, it almost appears to be a permanent fixture. The antiporta is an installation of many moods and faces – altering with the changing of the hour, weather conditions and seasonality. It comes alive through light, engagement and ultimately experience – the binding elements at the core of the antiporta, be it the temporary structure in an unfamiliar temporary space, or the fixture behind the front door, the gateway to familiar interiors. 017

MEET THE

CREATIVES

S

tephanie Borg has been a graphic designer for over 25 years. Although she has lived here for most of her life, she has also lived in The Bahamas, USA (Florida), Italy and the Sultanate of Oman. She returned to Malta in 2008 and ever since has been observing, absorbing and depicting Maltese daily life and culture. Having exhibited both in Malta and abroad, she has a permanent display of works at the Magazino Hall at the Valletta Waterfront. Her work can also be found in private collections in various countries around the world. How did you come to be a designer? Since I was a child, I have been interested in working in a creative field. Like most children I used to draw and as I grew older I wanted to take it further – it never crossed my mind to do anything else other than be creative. This was much against my father’s wish who didn’t see this line of work as being conducive to making a living. Back then being a graphic designer was quite an unusual profession but it was something I wanted to do and I persevered. There were no MCAST [Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology] courses in those days, so I used to buy graphic design books from abroad and I taught myself the computer at the studios where I worked. I spent many evenings in when other 1820 year olds were out having fun – and I don’t regret that one bit. My first commission was when I was living in Oman and was asked to do an ink drawing for a wedding invite depicting a traditional Omani celebratory scene. Locally, it was the doors at Valletta waterfront in 2011. How do you work? Intuitively mostly. I don’t force it. Before I start a new project or a new drawing, I need to feel ready and need to have a clear head. Usually I clear my working environment and declutter as much as I can. Once I start working, I’m very focused and work for long hours – that’s quite the norm. Sometimes one project takes priority over another simply because I feel drawn to start it first. I consider myself quite disciplined. Being a self-employed artist on a tiny island can prove to be quite challenging so discipline and good time management are a must. Do you take commissions? Yes I do consider commission work and have taken commissions both from private individuals as well as corporate clients. Some work hangs in private homes both locally and abroad. Some clients have commissioned an illustration of their

family front door for example whilst others have given me a particular theme to work on. I have also done wedding invites that included both the design and the drawing. Corporate work includes drawings for a shopping bag for a prominent food store in Malta and Gozo; the doors and balconies of the Valletta Waterfront commissioned by the operator a few years ago; a drawing that featured on a restaurant’s book and an original drawing for a leading insurance agency to name a few. I have also collaborated with local suppliers on the design concept and packaging of their products. What inspires you? I’m mostly inspired by my surroundings. When I lived abroad, I was inspired by the colours and subjects of those particular countries. When I came back to Malta in 2008, I started seeing my country through a different perspective and that enabled me to see things through a fresh perspective. This year in fact I’m celebrating my 10-year Malta story. I had started off the collection with a series of ink drawings that depicted Malta’s daily life and culture, the mundane, the things we take for granted. The Maltese doors and tile pattern themes were already included in my work back then, however as years passed by I became more focused on these two subjects in particular and expanded my collection of drawings and artworks, as well as products, mainly featuring these two themes. Why do you love pattern and colour? I never thought of a why to be honest….it’s just how it is! I guess I’m naturally drawn to both colour and pattern, and it’s been like this for as long as I can remember. When I was little I used to accompany my mum to ‘tal-bicciet’ and ask for the remnants so that once back home I could study their designs and colours and create a sort of collage with them – that used to be the highlight of my day! What’s next? I will be launching my very first fashion product later on this year - a limited edition silk scarf. I’m very excited about this! I will also be expanding my Malta Tile Pattern Collection with some new products just in time for the Christmas season. I have some commission work I need to work on and I’ve already started preparing for events that will become more frequent come October. However things don’t always go as planned. So I go with the flow and embrace the unexpected. stephanieborg.com

GARDENTRENDS

What’s making it big in the garden world? The Garden Studio’s Eliza Costabel decodes the Chelsea Flower Show into the four strongest trends WATERWISE GARDENS This year’s main theme at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show was most certainly water conservation and the environment. Most gardens on show were designed with water conservation and environmentally considerate landscaping in mind, with many using a vast array of Mediterranean and drought-tolerant plants.

CORTEN STEEL Raw materials and in particular Corten steel - also known as weathering steel, a group of steel alloys which form a stable rust-like appearance after several years exposure to weather - were consistently seen throughout the show in forms of planters, water features, retaining walls as well as decorative elements.

ULTRA VIOLET Pantone’s colour of the year 2018 appeared prominently in the show’s flower and foliage palette. Often paired with contrasting chartreuse or contemporary metals, the purple family of colours made a bold statement in all its manifestations.

STREAM-LINED STRUCTURES Clean-lined and minimalist structures were seen in most garden designs on show, both in the form of garden pavilions and structures used to divide and modulate the space within the layout of the garden. 021

NAME TO KNOW

Patricia Urquiola

P

Patricia Urquiola is one of the few female designers to make it to the top of an industry that is still dominated by men and has done it by combining creative flair with commercial savviness...

atricia Urquiola is a hugely talented and prolific designer with a range that stretches from bathroom taps to chairs and sofas, rugs, tiles and tables and tableware. Visit any international design show and there will be a slew of products designed by her studio, all of them showcasing her inimitable style that fuses creativity and innovation with a confident use of materials and attention to detail for designs that push boundaries but in a way that is appealing and not cold. Her mantra is ‘to improve our everyday lives; not only in terms of ergonomics, environmental impact and other practical elements, but mostly on the intangible virtual values perceptions, mental comfort and inner pleasure’. A multiple-award winner, her Fjord armchair can be found in the permanent collection of New York’s prestigious Museum of Modern Art, and her clients include many major brands including Alessi, B&B Italia, Driade, Foscarini, Kartell and Moroso as well as hotels and retail spaces around the world. In 2015 she was made Art Director of Cassina, one of Italy’s most venerable brands with archives that include Le Corbusier and Gio Ponti. Born in Oviedo in northern Spain, she

now works and lives in Milan and puts her aesthetic down to a fusion of the two cultures. ‘As a person, my roots are strongly Spanish but the profession is Italian… and it’s a mix that fits... I feel both naturally, together. It’s a good thing.’ She says of the Crinoline chair for B&B Italia: ‘It’s absolutely a chair by a Spanish designer but then with the quality and the architecture of the Italian company…’ Having wanted to be a designer from age 12, at 18, Patricia Urquiola left her hometown for Madrid to study architecture, transferring to Milan Polytechnic where she graduated in 1989, her thesis overseen by Achille Castiglioni, the iconic designer of the Arco floorlamp, and known for his minimal use of materials for maximum effect. It was a pivotal time. ‘I fell in love,’ she has said of this period. ‘I focused on design because of that man. He taught my generation about tools for living, in relation to the habitat and the people who would use them.’ Castiglioni was just one of her mentors. From Vico Magistretti, creator of the stackable plastic chair, she learned to how to create a product that looked great and worked well but also connected with buyers. From Piero Lissoni, who made her head of design of his studio, she learned to design with longevity in mind.

In 2001, aged 39 and urged on by Lissoni, she set out on her own although recently divorced with a young daughter, she was not confident about doing so. ‘I had my prejudices,’ she says. ‘We are women; we have babies. And I didn’t think I could have my own business,’ she explains. She could, and what’s more she was an immediate success and today she’s oversees a hugely busy and successful studio that delivers commercially has well as creatively, with major international companies, including now those such as Louis Vuitton, wanting to collaborate with her. She is, though, a passionate and exacting person to work with. Shocked by the waste of water in an enormous sunken bath in a South Korean luxury hotel, she was inspired to factor sustainability into her designs; for Axor, part of the Hansgrohe group, she refused to design a bathtub large enough for two people. Her closest and longest collaboration has been for Italian brand Moroso, for whom she was worked since before she launched her own studio and for whom she designed the Fjord chair. In describing her relationship with Urquiola, Patrizia Moroso once said: ‘To work with another woman as a woman, you have more complicity, more things to share. You go deeper. She’s given me projects from her soul.’

hen renovating her new property in Birgu, Eliza Costabel faced two challenges. The first was ensuring the house, parts of which date back to the 1500s, kept its character whilst at the same time making it a home for modern times. The second was turning a space with a width of just 2.5 metres into a place that felt spacious and comfortable. She overcame both challenges with aplomb, and today the four-storey house has been transformed from a dark and stuffy property into one that is filled with light and air and has a wonderfully relaxing and tranquil mood about it. Having lived most of her life overseas, in particular in North and East Africa, the U.S., and the Far East, Eliza’s home is also decorated with lovely objects from around the world that add interest and charm. Getting to this point wasn’t easy, though, especially with the challenges of doing major conversion works in a space so

tight. She and her fiance’ Alberto went through three contractors which stretched a six-month renovation to over a year. ‘The first contractors unfortunately let us down,’ she says. ‘The third was Nino Marotta and he was our saviour. I call him an artist builder; he puts passion into whatever he does, not just the building but also the finishes and details.’ As well as being owner of landscape company, The Garden Studio, Eliza is also an interior architect so she was clear about what needed to be done to make the property liveable for herself and Alberto. ‘None of the back rooms had ventilation or natural light and were very dark and damp so we demolished the back part of these and inserted an open shaft that stretches from the first floor to the top of the house,’ she says. ‘This way all the rear rooms either have a skylight or window that opens onto the shaft which brings ventilation and light throughout the house.’ Although narrow, the ground and first floors had lovely high

Above left, dining area: at one end of the living room is a small Carrara marble bistro-style dining table that seats four. ‘The house is designed for two people to live in, with a maximum of two guests,’ says Eliza. The two chairs were her grandmother’s and have been reupholstered and re-painted by Shabby-Chic. ‘I didn’t want four chairs around a table so instead there is a two-seater bench of solid mango wood,’ says Eliza Above right, entrance: Eliza kept the lovely arched ceilings, which date back to the 1500s, to create an eye-catching entrance. ‘I wanted the first impression of the house to have that “wow!” effect,’ she says. ‘It is the business card of the house.’ The sleek white half-wall, made of gypsum and painted, is a lighter contrast to the stone walls. Furniture is kept to a minimum and practical. The enormous Monstera plant and tropical underplanting in an extra-large Tunisian pot adds to the effect 028

Top, kitchen: on the ground floor, the kitchen is full of light thanks to the skylight at the far end. Instead of a clear sheet of glass, Eliza has decorated it with the stalks of sisal plant, bought when she was in Kenya. The smooth white kitchen units contrast the walls and enhance the light, and ladder-style shelving gives extra storage without cluttering the space. The original arched niche at the back, perhaps once an oven, is now cleverly converted into shelving and breakfast counter. Old chemistry beakers are used as vases. The gold wire stools are from Loft Above left, stairwell: the original stone stairs between the ground and first floor are unusually wide and beautiful. ceilings and arches which were left untouched. However, to find space for the bedroom, on the second floor, a loft was built above the first floor living room, and throughout the house she demolished walls, ceilings and rearranged room accesses to open up the spaces and make them code compliant. Despite the major works, the character of the house has been kept, from the soaring ceiling arches to the elegant spiral stone staircase between the ground and first floors, and the original stone walls. The latter, though, have been tempered with sleek white plastered gypsum panels that cloak the lower half of the walls in the main rooms. ‘This counterbalances the stone and prevents the rooms from having a “cave effect”,’ explains Eliza. ‘And I think this style suits Maltese houses of character because it allows the stone to reign supreme, but without a feeling of claustrophobia.’ 030

Bathroom: this is the only room to have doors for privacy, and these are a pair of old Indian doors bought from a market in Mombsa onto which Eliza has had the dotted pattern found in Maltese prehistoric temples hand-chiselled on by a local artisan. Inside the bathroom, the floor and walls are of micro-cement in a warm, grey shade. ‘I didn’t want any grout lines anywhere in the house to keep the design as minimal and uncluttered as possible’ says Eliza

Upstairs hall: the custom stairs leading to the roof terrace are made from industrial steel grating, painted white, the pattern throwing up beautiful shadows on the wall during the day. ‘It’s natural artwork,’ says Eliza. The trunks of two mango trees from Kenya, are a contrast to the white surrounds, adding the warmth and the richness of real wood Bedroom: in the new loft that is the bedroom, one wall had to be chiselled out to create a 15mm niche so that once the bed was installed, there was room to move around. The Faro Barcelona wall lamps are multi-purpose - ambient and reading lights but also a shelf and a USB charging point - making them perfect for a small space. Eliza did not want any doors to keep the flow of light and air throughout the house. Instead, she has used two mango tree trunks as pillars to define the space. Here, as between other rooms, there is a curtain that can be drawn across to keep the room warm or cool Walk-in wardrobe: while the bedroom has storage drawers, the couple’s clothes are in a good-sized walkin wardrobe. HW SPACES Terrace: the roof terrace has been made into an outdoor living room which is a lovely place to be, especially at the end of the day. The built-in seating is of Tanzanian teak and the fence is made from sisal stalks, their wavy shape throwing interesting shadows on the ground. The ornamental grasses and sun-loving plants at the back add privacy and refreshing green

The all-white scheme is also crucial in creating the home’s ‘warm minimalist feel’ as Eliza calls it. The colour palette has been kept deliberately neutral and natural materials dominate, from wood that has either been left natural or white-washed with chalk paint, to fabrics of burlap and linen along with rugs of sisal and jute. ‘This house reflects my minimalist taste, my love of nature and international 032

background, but I think it is also what most suits the architecture of this tiny house,’ she says. Plants play a part too, of course. ‘I have put in each space as much greenery as makes sense to have,’ says Eliza. ‘Together it’s a real antidote to the heat and congestion of Malta. I wanted a house with a relaxing resort-vibe all year round, a place that is restful to the mind and the spirit.’

Study: Despite the small size of the property, Eliza managed to fit in a good-sized study. ‘In this small space we have achieved all the rooms we needed - an entrance, a kitchen, a living room, a bedroom, bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe, a home-office, as well as a roof terrace,’ she says

hen the owners of this home saw the garden they were immediately smitten. ‘As soon as the previous home owners opened the door to the outdoor area, we immediately knew this was it,’ says one half of the couple. ‘We cancelled all other scheduled house viewings.’ A family with two young children and a hectic lifestyle, a fantastic outside space to enjoy together at the end of the day and at weekends was important. However, although the garden and pool was just what they wanted, it was largely hidden from the rest of house, accessed through a back door and with a small window that kept views to a minimum.

HW

As well, while the ground floor of the property that was originally a barn had been renovated, the upper floor was untouched. In fact, it could only be reached by means of a wide sturdy ladder on the outside. Still, with all the necessary rooms downstairs, the homeowners were content to leave the upstairs as it was, but keen to change the ground floor to something that more suited their lifestyle. ‘At first we just wanted to open up the space and merge the living room to the kitchen so as to get an open space,’ says the homeowner. ‘We also asked the architect to make a hole in the ceiling to accommodate what I always dreamt of having – a spiral staircase.’

037

HW SPACES On entering the home, a wide spiral staircase of black steel, walnut and slate that was designed by the architects is a show stopper

038

SPACES

However, on seeing the house, architect Janice Fiorentino realised its potential to be a great space and suggested a more substantial renovation. ‘After several meetings and lots of discussions we decided that to have the house we have always dreamt of we needed to embark on a bigger project,’ says the homeowner. ‘Janice sent us the renders of how the house would look if we went for the ‘big’ project and after viewing them we did not look back.’ To create a space that flowed well and was filled with light, walls were brought down, large windows and doors were created and internal spaces rearranged. Today, the kitchen is strategically situated to overlook the main family spaces and in the morning is flooded with natural light through the new, wide openings that overlook the outdoor pool area. Above the dining table that is alongside the fireplace is a large skylight which also fills the home with light. The beauty of statuario marble, found in the kitchen and the fireplace, is complemented by the warmth of walnut. The homeowner’s dream, a spiral staircase of black steel, walnut and slate sculpture is a showstopper and leads to the new master bedroom which also has extensive views overlooking the back garden, pool and beyond.

Top, shelving unit: a semi-solid custom unit made of the same materials as the staircase forms a buffer between the entrance and the family spaces, but still allows a glimpse of what is to come. In front of it is an area for the children with cushions and a round rug in front of the fireplace. The wall unit provide storage for toys and by framing the window, creates a lovely reading nook. The home is carefully zoned using partial walls clad in warm and interesting materials. Above the stairase, top left, a round skylight mimics the form of the stairs as well as effectively bringing in light

039

HW SPACES Master bedroom: on the upper level, the master bedroom in its relaxing neutral palette has extensive views overlooking the back garden, pool and beyond. Flos pendant lights make for elegant bedside lighting.

For the architect, the effect of the changes comes as no surprise. ‘In general, until they actually experience it, people highly underestimate the way good design and the quality of the space they live in improves their daily life,’ says Janice. That is certainly the case here - for this family, their redesigned home has been a wonderful revelation. ‘We are truly enjoying the house now, spending weekends at home entertaining friends and family,’ says the home-owner. ‘We love the big kitchen space and the island of statuario marble where my husband spends hours preparing and cooking different meals. We did not do this before the renovation as the space was somehow not conducive to entertaining. Little did we know the impact good design would have on our well-being.’ 040

A SUPERIOR BLEND

It’s won the Din l-Art Helwa Award for Architectural Excellence and been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival Awards 2018 - it’s easy to see why the Coach House in Balzan, with its superb merging of old and new, is one of Malta’s most talked-about properties of the year

I

first found myself in the Coach House nine years ago, in the very early days of its transformation. It had been snapped up by friends of mine – a couple who fell for it the moment they saw it and made an offer on their first viewing. Already its potential was palpable. In the years that have followed, their relationship with the Coach House has certainly been tested but their vision for it never wavered. As testament to that, it stands now as a proud and respectful contemporary icon in the centre of Balzan – refreshing proof that it is both possible, and pleasing, for the new to be blended with the old. And there is no escaping the Coach House’s history. It is thought to have primarily served as a service building connected to Palazzo Bosio, which was built in the 18th century for

Vincenzo Bosio, Commandator of the Knights of the Order of St John, as his own residential quarters. The property is now composed of an outer set of buildings adjacent to the palazzo. The transformation was organised around the need to preserve the functional nature of the building while accommodating the requests of the new owners. In order to turn what used to be a one-storey service building into a home, an extension was designed and grafted on the perimeter wall of the preexisting structure. The extensions and their structural interventions were carried out in a way to ensure the protection of the existing building and the reversibility of new additions wherever possible. Today, the volume of the main extension sits exactly on the perimeter of the pre-existing building.

HW

Modern extension: this incorporates a ‘woven’ stone façade that combines contemporary minimalism with vernacular building technologies

HW SPACES

‘The Coach House is the result of an approach which combines vernacular building technologies with contemporary design and which takes into account the needs of today’s highlydemanding environment while preserving our unique built heritage,’ explains David Drago, the executive director of AP. ‘These incredible results are also down to the passion our clients had for following through on their vision. We hope this project will serve as a relevant case study on how we can preserve our built heritage while keeping it alive.’ The homeowners themselves are thrilled with the results of the project – a venture that certainly had its fair share of ups and downs. ‘Just getting going was a huge challenge,’ they recall. ‘Because the house is a Grade I listed building, it took two-anda-half years to secure the permit, which meant works didn’t start until 2012. Financing it was also tough as, in retrospect, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into!’

044

Mill room: the walls were cleaned and repointed, restored and covered in a special breathable white paint. The chosen colour scheme is neutral and fresh, allowing the traditional stone to speak for itself. Strong statement features were needed to complement the height of the room – as can be seen in the statement fireplace, Vertigo pendant lights and lampshade

SPACES

HW

Hidden details: clever interventions have been made across the house. For instance, air-conditioning units are cleverly concealed – here hidden inside a purpose-built cabinet. The four-metre curtains, meanwhile, highlight the sheer height of this space Kitchen: this is known to be the oldest part of the house, even predating the construction of Palazzo Bosio. Traditional features include the kileb and xorok, while the colour scheme across the walls, floors and cabinetry is respectful of what was already existing

Study: the study is one of the most prestigious rooms in the house as, in the past, it formed part of the adjoining palazzo. Bedroom: the horizontal slit window across the spare bedroom and ensuite was created by the space that divides the old, existing volume on the ground floor from the modern structure on the upper floor Bathroom: all the bathrooms in the house lead seamlessly from one space into another, providing complete integration. Here, a skylight sits strategically above the bath to provide the perfect glow for relaxation – and which can also be lit at night

Today, though, the hard-slog was worth it and their vision has been substantiated by the growing list of accolades the house has received – as well as their own enjoyment of it. ‘Our favourite space is the mill room – which has actually changed very little since we first bought it. It is very bright and, by day, it’s lovely to be able to throw open the doors and windows onto the gardens on both sides of the outside, and to incorporate the indoors and outdoors. Although

we’re right in the heart of the village, the house is extremely private and quiet – we barely even heard a thing during the recent festa! ‘Now, when we look back on what we wanted from the Coach House, I think we have achieved it and more. It is a contemporary home that embraces the very best of the present while staying resolutely true to the past. We are proud to have respected that past, while also making it very much our own.’

TEXTURED TONES > This bathroom mixes many different textures and a neutral colour palette to create a room that looks and feels relaxing. The walls are plaster and the shower area, separated from the bath by a glass wall, ensures an open feel. Teaming large square ceramic tiles with co-ordinated smaller mosaic ones on the floor gives a less uniform looks which suits the style of this room. The bathtub area features real wood - if you want to do this yourself, choose engineered wood, which is a thin layer of real wood on top of a plywood base as this is better able to withstand the humidity of a bathroom. You will also need to protect it with either lacquer or oil. A fuss-free option is to choose wood-effect ceramic tiles.

‘A collection is like an orchestra - not everyone can be the first violin’ How do you create a set of pieces for the bathroom? Designer Christian Haas explains...

062

BATHROOMS Designer Christian Haas started his design career in Munich but now works out of a studio in Porto, after spending some years in Paris. Known for an elegant, pared-back aesthetic, he has worked with Villeroy & Boch for the past 10 years, creating the shapes (not decorative detail) of their tableware. The new Antheus collection is his first bathroom collaboration with the German company and consists of three main pieces and accessories. Here he gives an insight into the design process... What was your brief? Villeroy & Boch wanted an elegant, sophisticated collection that used classic materials and which spoke a global design language so the collection would fit into an apartment in London, St Petersburg or Shanghai. It could not be over-designed; it needed to be able to last for ten to 20 years without going out of fashion.

What lifestyle factors had an impact the design? Today people spend more time in the bathroom - they don’t just brush their teeth, take a shower and leave. Instead it’s a space where they can forget about their daily stress for a short time. For people with families, it is the only zone where they are on their own for ten to 20 minutes, where they have their personal ‘me’ time. The result is that today the design of the bathroom is influenced by the rest of the home; it has to be more than just a functional space, so you now have bathroom furniture that is freestanding, similar to that which you find in the living room. What was your inspiration? It is important to me that the collection had classic references, especially as Villeroy & Boch has a long history, but it also needed to be contemporary, otherwise it would have looked like a reedition and become dated. With the basin, the facets on it may remind one of Art Deco or Bauhaus, but then it’s all about being elegant, well-proportioned with a sophisticated combination of materials. When designing the pieces we used the Golden Ratio, a design rule that explains how volumes work together, what are harmonious proportions, what feels comfortable and what does not. Applying it helps create something that is beautifully proportioned and will last. What materials have you used? Wood, ceramic, marble and stainless steel, materials that stand the test of time - they function well and age in a beautiful way and also work together perfectly. The stone brings an individual touch, stainless steel is cooler and the wood brings warmth. The ceramic, called Titanceram, is a material created by Villeroy & Boch which allows for clearly defined edges which let me create the faceting on the washbasin, toilet and bath that gives an interesting light and shadow play without being too detailed. What piece do you start with? When I create a collection, it is important to start with the hero

HW

piece, the one that has the most optical impact. With tableware, for instance, you start with the teapot because although it is the piece that is likely to have fewer sales than other pieces, it creates the image of the collection with its handle and lid. In the same way, for the Antheus collection I started with the basin which is functional but beautifully combines the different materials. How did you make the pieces in the collection work together? A collection is like an orchestra - not everyone can be the first violin; you need to have hero pieces that stand out but also others that are quieter and more functional. It is the same concept as when designing a bathroom where you have one or two statement pieces with everything else less noticeable - this cools the eye and creates a harmonious look and feel. In my bathroom, for example, I have a free-standing bathtub and for me that is the highlight piece; the walk-in shower is more discreet. For this collection I began with the free-standing basin - it has

‘When designing a bathroom you have one or two statement pieces with others that are quieter and more functional’

the airiness of a stainless steel frame which is inspired by the legs of a coffee table and the polished stainless steel reflects the room around it. Above is the marble top with the basin. It’s a classic design but it also has an open look that breathes and is lighter. We also decided to have a bathtub and with this piece there are two versions, one that is free-standing on the floor and another with a metal frame to make it more of a statement piece. YOUR STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO PLANNING A BATHROOM With so many different components to take into account, designing a bathroom needs careful thought and co-ordination. Here’s a guide to help you get it right...

Memento 2.0 surface-mounted his n’ hers washbasins in TitanCeram ceramic with precise contours and slim walls from Bathroom Design

What kind of bathroom do you want? First of consider who the bathroom is for, as that will help you decide what elements you need - a family bathroom will need a tub whereas an ensuite may not. ‘Make a list of the things you don’t want to compromise on,’ says Clare Zarb from Bathroom Design. ‘Do you want a bath or a shower? Free standing bath? Walk-in shower? Vanity unit and shelf or just a basin? Double or single bowls or just one basin.’ When considering your new bathroom, also take a look at the old - what don’t you like about it? What would you want to change?

How do you use it now? What would make being in the room more enjoyable? This exercise is a good way of deciding what is important to you. At the same time, you need to be realistic about space - a small bathroom is unlikely to be able to fit in a large bath-tub, walk-in shower and his n’ hers basins. ‘A common mistake is that people think big when their bathroom has limited space,’ says Claire. ‘Trying to fit a free-standing bath or a double sink into a small bathroom will make the space look even smaller.’

Plan the layout If you’re renovating an existing bathroom, don’t automatically ditch the existing layout. If it works well, then keep it as this way you won’t need to move the pipework which is costly and intrusive. If you do want wholesale change or are starting from scratch then begin by thinking about the flow of the room and what you can do to maximise the feel-good factor. For example, if you have a lovely view from the room, position your bathtub so you can enjoy the view whilst in it. Don’t place the toilet in the most prominent position - ideally, the first thing you see when you open the door should be something that looks stylish and relaxing. Measure your bathroom carefully so you know, exactly, the size of the room you have to work with. There are

numerous online 3D tools available to help you make a plan, or you can do something as simple as cut out the shapes, to scale, of all the features, from the bath to the shower enclosure, toilet and storage, and rearrange them until you find a layout that works. Always remember to leave plenty of space between each piece as you need room to move around. Also factor in which ways doors open, and the space this takes up. Also include ventilation - even if your bathroom does have a window, opening it is not enough; you will need to install a vent fan. Good ventilation will keep your bathroom healthy and also stop excessive moisture affecting the furniture.

Storage, storage, storage

Gamadecor bathroom range from Satariano

Key to a relaxing bathroom is having everything in its right place. A cluttered space will make you feel stressed and work against the wellness vibe you’re after. Having not enough space to hang everyone’s wet towels will, rightly, drive you mad. As will too few shelves for toiletries. So when drawing up your layout, include as much storage as possible including hooks and rails. A combination of closed cabinets and drawers along with open shelving works well, giving you a mix of exposed and concealed storage. This allows you to hide away what doesn’t look good but also display pretty bottles, candles and other objects that help give the bathroom a decorative feel, creating a mood that is less functional and utilitarian. Avoid bottles of shampoo on the shower floor or placed around a bathtub by including an alcove in the wall to store them away neatly.

The Cottofaenza Collection by Lafaenza Ceramic is a collection of fired clay tiles from B&M Supplies

Decide on your look How do you want your bathroom to make you feel? Relaxed and chilled or energised and ready for the day ahead? The answer to these questions will help you determine the room’s look. When putting it together choose the sanitaryware, tiles and furniture at the same time so you can be sure they all work together. A moodboard can help as it can allow you to clearly see how all the elements work together and if something is missing. For a space with a spa-like feel, a neutral colour palette works well, with tiles in natural materials or ones that mimic their look. If you’re after a more energised mood, then bolder colours and pattern are a good choice although be careful in a small space as highly decorative designs can be too busy and make it appear smaller. If you’re thinking colour, use a colour chart as this will help you

see how different colours work together. A rule to make it easy is the 70 - 20 - 10 distribution rule: the lightest colour covers about 70 percent of the room, the second colour 20 percent and the boldest colour just 10 percent. If working with neutrals, don’t choose one colour for the entire room as this will make it appear bland and uninteresting. Another idea is to work within the same colour spectrum - so for example, a range of light to darker blues - as this gives the bathroom an interesting but also rounded look. A rich dark colour on the walls teamed with white tiles and sanitary ware is another successful scheme. Finally, as well as sanitary ware, think about taps as today they are one of the room’s key finishing touches with a wide choice in a range of colours and styles. 067

Heating The most popular option now for bathroom heating is underfloor heating. Vladimir Mitic from Ecomaxx explains why and gives you the options... Traditional heating solutions such as radiators heat the air from one source. To achieve a comfortable temperature in the lower part of a room, the top of a room can get overheated, resulting in a room that feels uncomfortable or stuffy. Underfloor heating, however, gently warms your room from the floor upwards, resulting in the perfect spread of heat which is far more comfortable. An underfloor heating system also runs at lower temperatures than traditional radiators making it more efficient and with lower running costs. All underfloor heating systems can work when divided into several heating zones (rooms) with each having their own separately controlled programmable room thermostats. This means that you can simply switch off the room that you don’t use and lower the heating cost.

Wet or dry? Today the dry or electric system is the most popular, taking over from the traditional wet, water or hydronic system in which warm water was propelled by a pump through a pipeline beneath the floor. A dry system is an electric conductor (copper cable, thermal mat, copper mesh or aluminum tape) that is laid beneath the floor with a thermostat that controls the temperature on the wall. The advantage of this system is that it has moderate running costs, installation is simple and swift and can be done under almost any floor surface. It is also maintenance-free.

High voltage or low voltage? Some electric underfloor heating systems run on high voltage. Here, thick, insulated copper cables are installed beneath the floor, using 220-240V alternate currant (AC) from the grid. The cable is plugged into a regular wall socket and the temperature is regulated by a thermostat on the wall and usually a probe which measures the temperature of the heater (cable). The advantages of this system is that installation is simple, there is no maintenance and no need for transformers to convert the high voltage AC from the grid to low voltage DC (direct current). 068

The disadvantages are the use of high voltage electricity, the high temperature of the cables (they are relatively thin, so a high temperature is needed to compensate the gap between them) and copper oxidation. Which is why today more advanced underfloor heating systems use low voltage direct current. Some systems use copper mats or insulated copper mesh made of very thin copper wires while others use thin insulated aluminium foils or tapes. Both are very thin and can be installed under any floor surface, and both systems use transformers to transform high voltage AC from the grid to low voltage DC. A low voltage current is not only safer but it results in a lower consumption of electricity and a lower temperature of the heaters. The only issue is the use of transformers which need to be in a dry, ventilated environment. For a bathroom, they would need to positioned in a corridor, storage room, or any other convenient place outside the bathroom. The electronics have their own housing which can be chased/chiseled into the wall so the only visible part would be a lid with louvers. At Ecomaxx we prefer to use thin insulated 10cm wide aluminum alloy tape. Relatively new to the Maltese market, it is highly flexible and customizable. As the tape has a very large heating surface, it works at a lower temperature, resulting in very low consumption of electricity. It can also be connected to batteries and solar panels.

At what stage in a bathroom renovation do you install underfloor heating? If you’re installing it in an existing bathroom, the existing floor (tiles etc) has to be removed. Then a 4-5 cm thick concrete screed is applied onto which is insulation is installed, followed by the tape (or mesh). Both the insulation and aluminium underfloor heating tapes can be installed on top of existing floor (usually tiles), but this would inevitably rise the floor level. You could not have the insulation but this would considerably reduce the efficiency and impact the electricity bill’.

Lighting What’s the best way to light a bathroom? Peter Cutajar from Light Design Solutions gives his advice...

Pastilla lights are stylish cylinder-shaped lights designed by Patricia Urquiola, from Light Design Solutions

‘Bathrooms should be places in which wellconsidered lighting brings out the best in all the materials used and lighting control really makes a space work to create different moods. The best approach is to treat the space as you would any other room and create different layers of lighting effects. Well designed lighting is of the utmost importance in the bathroom. The principle of evenly illuminating the face originated in the theatre, where actors applied makeup in front of mirrors surrounded by bare lamps in porcelain sockets. For the best task lighting use two lighting fixtures flanking the mirror, surface mount or recessed at eye level to provide a shadow less task light - lighting above you will create shadows on your face. General illumination is another layer of lighting that really helps make a bathroom work on all levels; this is done by using recessed or surface mount ceiling light fittings.’

The timeline You need to start planning your bathroom as early as possible. ‘Today most items take 8 to 12 weeks for items to arrive if they’re not in stock,’ says Claire Zarb. ‘I suggest, especially as we’re talking about one’s home, that you plan ahead so that you won’t be compromised on time when it comes to the way you want your bathroom to look.’ You also need to be clear on the timeline of how work is done as changes that require completed work to be removed and redone will be expensive, both in time and cost.

THE ORDER OF WORK IS: An existing bathroom is stripped out and/or a space is prepared by a builder If carpentry is need, such as creating an alcove to store bottles, this will be done next The plumber ‘roughs in’ pipes and drainage the pipes are there, but as yet not connected to the bathroom fittings as they are not installed yet An electrician does the same with wiring. If the work needed is not too complicated and extensive, a plumber and electrician can work together. It is at this stage that underfloor heating is installed A tiler prepares the floor and walls The tiling, grouting and painting is done

OUTSIDE IN GARDENS FOOD TRAVEL

The design story of Alchemy, a new bar on Strait Street, is a heady cocktail of ancient philosophy, Dante’s Divine Comedy and Caravaggio, along with an interior that blends leather and velvet and deep blue with mustard yellow. Designed by Budapest-based Gasparbonta & Partners, the philosophy of changing one substance into another is referenced through the name of the bar but also a number of decorative features which are found over the three floors which reflect Dante’s travels through Purgatory, Hell and Heaven. Guests enter as mortals into the ground floor public bar (Purgatory), descend down a red staircase to the basement restrooms (Hell) and up a green staircase to the private lounge with its halo-shaped lights (Heaven). The highly graphic illustrations and typography found on walls and on menus, created by Miklos Kiss, were inspired by the work of Caravaggio. Definitely a potent mix. www.alchemyvalletta.com

With this menu you can enjoy the ingredients in their natural state, without any cooking which would change the texture and the flavours. This menu is also very healthy, with the dishes having little salt, sugars or fats. The salmon is cured with salt and sugar, rather than cooked or smoked with artificial chemicals; this helps against the addition of flour and artificial ingredients, both of which appear in processed and packaged food nowadays.’ - Chef James Rizzo

Citrus Cured Fresh Salmon

on a Bed of Mixed Leaves & Beetroot Flowers with a Citrus Dressing ‘A mixture of salt and sugar will create a layer around the salmon that preserves it and makes it safe to eat, without making it sweet or salty. You need to plan ahead, but this is an amazing way to eat salmon.’ INGREDIENTS 500g fresh salmon fillet, all bones removed 150g rock salt 150g sugar 1 lemon, zested & juiced 1 lime, zested & juiced 1 orange, zested & juiced

200ml olive oil 50ml apple cider vinegar 50g sugar mixed lettuce leaves for 4 people 1 beetroot, peeled & sliced thinly with a mandolin 1 golden beetroot, peeled & sliced thinly with a mandolin

METHOD To cure the salmon, mix the rock salt, sugar and the lemon, lime and orange zests well. In a metal dish, place a sheet of baking parchment paper and then on top, a layer of paper towels. Place half the mixture on top of the paper, place the salmon on top, and then cover the rest of the salmon with the remaining mix. Pat down well. Cover the fish with cling film and place something heavy on top such as tin cans or a heavy pot and place in the fridge. Leave to cure for a minimum of two days or a maximum of four days.

To make the dressing, whisk around 10ml each of the lemon, lime and orange juices, with the olive oil, cider vinegar and sugar. Dress the mixed lettuce leaves with the dressing, and place in a salad bowl with the thinly sliced beetroot. You can add cherry tomatoes, cucumber, or any other fresh vegetables for additional garnish. Rinse the salt/sugar mixture off the salmon and pat dry. With a very sharp knife, slice the salmon thinly and place neatly over the salad.

CUCUMBER, MELON & MINT CHILLED SOUP ‘One of my favourite dishes in the summertime, it’s quick and easy to do and always a crowd pleaser. It’s fresh and very easy on the palate with the naturally sweet and minty flavour from the cucumber and mint.

INGREDIENTS 1 melon, peeled, deseeded & cubed 1 cucumber, peeled, seeds removed & cut into pieces 8 mint leaves pinch salt pinch sugar METHOD In a blender, combine all the ingredients together well. The consistency should be a little thick but not too watery - if it’s too thick, add a bit of water to loosen it up. The taste should be fresh and refreshing and a bit on the sweet side. Place in the fridge for two hours so it chills and settles. Before serving, mix well again to ensure the sediment doesn’t remain at the bottom. Garnish with the peel of the cucumber and small diced beetroot cubes.

MACERATED BERRIES with Honey Greek Yoghurt & Nuts

‘Maceration is the process of breaking up soft food with liquid. This is often done with fruit and citrus juices - the acidity helps break down the fruit and gives it extra flavour as the fruit absorbs the liquid (even alcohol can be used). Combine this with Greek yoghurt and nuts for a naturally healthy dessert that has nice textures and flavours too.’ INGREDIENTS 200g strawberries 50g blueberries 50g blackberries juice ½ lemon juice ½ lime 3 tbsp honey

300g Greek yoghurt 5 mint leaves 50g cashew nuts, chopped 50g walnuts, chopped 50g hazelnuts, chopped

METHOD In a bowl, place the strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, lemon and lime juice, along with 1 tablespoon of the honey and mix well. Let it rest for 15 minutes. Mix 2 tablespoons of yogurt with the chopped mint leaves. In a wide glass, place some of the berries, top up with some yoghurt, then top up with the mixed chopped nuts and repeat until the glass is nearly full. Serve immediately, as the citrus juices will break down the yoghurt and berries and they will become very mushy if left for more than an hour.

Carchitecture On a visit to Germany, architect Matthew J. Mercieca of MJMDA is inspired by the buildings of Germany’s prestige car manufacturers

W

e’re a nation of motor heads, but can this obsession be worthy of any purpose? Can we learn from the journey of motor vehicles and apply it to architecture? Vehicles have evolved so intensely over the last 120 years, and there are many lessons to be learned in the skills employed towards giving birth to something that is loved and that resonates with the ideal of freedom many hold dear. It may simply be the manageable size of a motor vehicle that lends its self well to it being better understood and shaped. Maybe controlling architecture needs more: more technology, more attention, more control, more knowledge, and more skill. And maybe technology just needed some more time to catch up. Many will agree that German vehicles carry a hallmark of quality and design. Three German car brands in particular have not only established themselves as the desirable must haves of millions across the globe, but have the common factor of marrying their visions with architecture: as backdrop, as context as container. Porsche, BMW and Mercedes exude heritage and development. And such is their dance of love with design, performance and 092

architecture that each of these brands has built architectural icons that praise their brand, but in doing so acknowledge the power of architecture unreservedly. Each worthy of a visit in their own right are The Porsche Museum and Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, and BMW Welt in Munich. They are all incredibly refined examples of contemporary architecture. They are refined because the vehicular houses have repurposed their philosophies into architectural concepts through their chosen architects to create an experience; a resonating memory of a place, and an integrated design approach very much in the same way vehicles are designed in an integrated manner. These locations are highly recommended a visit, and although they enter and exceed their 10 year anniversaries, they are capable of giving visitors a sense of wonder of what is possible with a passion for architecture. Imagine what architecture Malta could have if its people allowed some of their passion for cars spill into the world of architecture. Just as architectural design integration is catching up to cars, let’s hope that the Maltese will be capable of catching up to wanting, and committing for more quality architecture.

The Porsche Museum, Stuttgart

BMW Welt, Munich

Mercedes Museum, Stuttgart

Architect: Delugan Meissl

Architect: Coop Himmelb(l)au, Vienna/Los Angeles

Architect: UN Studio, Amsterdam

Supported on just three V-shaped columns, the museum’s dominant main structure appears to float above the ground like a monolith. Inside, over 5600 square metres of exhibition area, see more than 80 vehicles along with special exhibitions that change regularly. www.porsche.com/museum/en/

A glass and steel, spiraling doublecone, this spectacular building which opened in 2007 is connected to the BMW Museum, and is a shop window for the company’s latest models. Look, touch and sit in the models and you can also hire any BMW production model for an hour, an afternoon or a day and take it for a spin. www.bmw-welt.com/en

Visitors begin at the uppermost level which is reached by capsule-like lifts with slits for windows, offering a glimpse of what is to come. Around the atrium are two interwoven ramps that lead to a series of galleries, some showcasing cars, others the history of the company. In total there are nine levels, showing 160 vehicles and over 1500 exhibits. www.mercedes-benz.com/en 093
