01 AUSTRALIA HOUSE

AUSTRALIA HOUSE Location Harcourt, Victoria, Australia Category Residential The design concept is driven by the idea of the Australian spirit; the people’s social behaviour, consideration for the landscape, cultural context, the climate and their hands on approach to crafting. The form of the building is influenced by the topography of the site with the intent of allowing the building to blend in with the surrounding landscape.

SITE PLAN SCALE 1:1500

The clients of the house are single old couple that promotes art and craft where it allows the public community to come for crafting sessions in the designated studio space and exhibit their work in a gallery. This uses crafting and sharing as a form of social interaction to enhance the Australian Spirit of sharing.

02 PURITY OF FOCUS

PURITY OF FOCUS Location Spencer Street, Melbourne Category Commercial The proposed Conan Doyle Mystery Theatre design inspiration was taken from a magnifying glass, which is an iconic equipment used in detective fiction to focus on meticulous details and uncover the truth. The performance spaces are designed as an architectural volume being wrapped by a facade of transparent glass formed by square grids that stimulates the idea of pixels focusing in a form of a magnifing glass.

The purity of focus with the use of colours, materials, light combined to generate the design and to allow the volume to be expressed on the interior and the exterior. The foyers are visually connected to allow for social interaction to take place and to link the volumes together. Taking into consideration of the Melbourne context, the main intention is to build a cultural presence expressed in dynamic volumes to project a fluid and transparent public visual interaction with the cultural and commercial surrounding within the site.

circulation space overlooking into southern cross station.

The inspiration of the set design came from the idea of a book, where the the story emerges from the words of the pages. The entire set was designed to be in a monochromed theme so as to allow the sets to stand out to the audience during the play and at the same time giving the audience the opportunity to concentrate on the actor’s facial expressions.

This thesis explores how intergenerational storytelling can be used to strengthen community bonds. It argues that intergenerational storytelling offers the unique opportunity for people of different age groups and cultural backgrounds to construct new knowledge as learners together through sharing their stories across using a variety of forms: oral, visual, written or digital. The architecture supports storytelling through replacing hierarchy with a rich variety of formal and informal spaces that provide celebrated platforms for storytelling.
