It's a big deal when we welcome new coffee to the co-op. Coffee space is perhaps the most coveted shelf space at Honest Weight. Our long-time grocery buyer David has a seemingly never-ending list of really awesome coffee brands that he would love to work with, but the co-op just doesn't have enough room! In 1640, Puritans from Massachusetts landed on the banks of what is now known as Long Island. There, they established the first English settlement in the state of New York, upon Native Shinnecock Land. Elizabeth Thunder Bird Haile, Chief Thunder Bird's Daughter, stated in an interview "our people did not understand that people who purchased land, keep it... forever. We thought we were just giving them a nice place to stay for a few years." The symbol of the Thunder Bird, her family name, has served as a symbol of pride for the Shinnecock for centuries, and is the namesake of @thunderislandcoffee Roasters. Thunder Island Coffee Roasters is a wholly Native American owned & operated coffee roasting company, located on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation, Long Island, New York. Thunder Island sources coffee beans through a Native-toNative Exchange Cooperative, meaning that their beans come directly from Natives in Guatemala and Peru, and they aren't touched by anyone else until they reach the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. The beans are then roasted directly on the Reservation, and sold only at the trading post on Shinnecock land, and to select retailers. Thunder Island Coffee is always highmountain grown at elevations of 4,000 feet and above, and USDA Organic and Fair Trade Certified. We now proudly offer Thunder Island's Canarsie blend, Montauk blend, and Smoke Signals blend, and Shinnecock Hills decaf.
