Honoring Local Stewardship TU Wrap 2020

Page 1

Honoring Steward s h i p Indigenous People planted corn, beans, and squash in the same mounds, to create a sustainable system that provided for soil health and fertility. Corn provided a physical pole for the bean vines to cling to. The bean vines stabilized and strengthened the corn. The squash vines created natural shading, helped to keep moisture in the soil, and prevented the growth of weeds. These crops provided Indigenous People with a nutritionally balanced diet.

We’ve been showcasing Slack Hollow products at Honest Weight since 1986. This family-run, hyper-local supplier of organic produce is one of our longest running vendors. Farmers Seth Jacobs and Martha Johnson are thrilled that their two adult sons have recently moved home to help with a new venture-growing and producing USDA Certified Organic full spectrum hemp extracts. They’re sharing their knowledge of sustainable, organic agricultural practices with the next generation, with the hope of being able to preserve it for years to come.

We're proud to offer a flavorful version of Three Sisters Soup, made with local and organic ingredients. This nutritious vegan soup makes a great lunch or the perfect complement to a cozy evening meal. Find it in our food service department!

Environmental stewardship is nothing new. A simple practice at the core of Indigenous life; take only what’s needed, take great care of how it’s taken, and leave enough for future generations. We are all guardians of our planet.
