Corn provided a physical pole for the bean vines to cling to. The bean vines stabilized and strengthened the corn. The squash vines created natural shading, helped to keep moisture in the soil, and prevented the growth of weeds. These crops provided Indigenous People with a nutritionally balanced diet.
