Zeit (Time) in Zeitz is a mixed development proposal for the revitalization of Zeitz. Zeitz was a coal industry dependent town with one of the largest coal deposits. As the German government planned to shut down all fossil fuel power stations, Zeitz’s coal mine was shut down too. The proposed project intends to embrace the coal industry identity of Zeitz, and transform the industrial elements into something new and positive. The elements of brick and arches are extracted and recomposed in a contemporary manner.

Hundreds of options were then randomly selected from the bunch and presented on a Design Explorer with KPI. A perfered option is then selected with results that fits the project's target.

Inspired by Tezuka Architect’s Fuji Kindergarten, a center courtyards were introduced for kid’s exposure of nature, surrounded by other facilities, seperated in academic, artistic and practical sections with the consideration of noise, while coming together as a community. Waldorf provides their students with homerooms, to provides sense of ownership and teaches responsibility for one’s own learning. It is a space for an individual to personalise and in which to work and study. The homeroom should be flexible for all sorts of learning activities, while being cost efficient. AdminsCanteen

Indoor eating space would be preferred during colder times so glass covered south facing façade is an optimal choice to utilize the sun at the same time giving the passers-by visibility of the interior. A hexagonal massing is suitable to the site as it faces both sides while keeping a clear front entrance, while having a suitable bike drivethru entrance at the same time minimizing the façade facing Seestraße 50. The structure of the building is inspired by the 2010 Shanghai Pavilion, which simplified the ‘Dougong’, a roof bracket found in the traditional East Asian architecture.
