field trips Field trips were essential part of this studio. As for designer seeking insights, actually visiting and observing our possible users really helped to develop our project. Through visits, Lauren and I were able to observe how it is to live in the assisted living as well as seeking problems and finding opportunities.

1. MIT Agelab 2. Laurelmead 3. Seashore Point 4. Pierce Manor 5. Hamilton House

guest speakers It was our pleasure to hear from many of the guest speakers from many of different backgrounds. Through investigating everyone’s view points and opportunities, sharing their knowledge and experience helped us to have second hand experience

desk research In to the few months into the semester, Lauren and I started to work together with similar interests. To really modify our specific interests, we had to seek out more informations individually. For Silver Village Online platform, we needed to seek more into older adults behaviors and attitude towards technology and we had to study in depth into our specific case scenarios.

1. Universal Design 2. What are Old people for? 3. Demographics 4. Village System

Companionship Often aging also means losing important social bonds and result in loneliness therefore retaining company is crucial for positive aging

Autonomy Retaining the ability to take charge of one’s own life is important for a meaningful life no matter one’s age.

Wisdom One of the great joys of getting older is the idea of wisdom gaining and teaching.

Connectivity It is the community’s responsibility to provide the increasing population of older adults with the ability to access community.

Service Community service is not only what the older adults receive but it is something they can also offer.

Mobility Decreased mobility limits older adults’ ability to continue being active member of community

DEFINE

Founded by the group of friends, Beacon Hill Village is the first village network which is located in the center of Boston. They aim to make sustainable living system enabling older adults to enjoy their life independently right at home. Services and community interactions can be made together as a whole village regardless of gender and age. This example of sustainable village system was inspiring to many other cities so that the service areas have extended to 200 plus 150 in development within the period of 15years. Therefore this number proves the promising value of the village system across the country.

Village System

COMPANIONSHIP IS ONE OF THE ESS BEING, YET WE PAY LITTLE ATTENTIO WITH FRIENDSHIP OR EVEN PASSIVE TIES. OUR BEST OLD FRIENDS FROM H US, ARE NOT OUR COMPANIONS BEC RHYTHMS OF DAILY LIFE WITH THEM

How we tested?

Dr. Kathrine Hegedus 72

Response to sketch prototype: I think once I reach the age when I would need these services, this would be helpful I really like that I can see what is going on in my area I really like that this can connect me to a wider community This seem to be for “white middle class People might not have the equipments for this service Service I would like to receive: Learning Companionship Events Cleaning Service I would like to give: Considered teaching archeology course at Hamilton House

Mary Langhorn 77

Response to sketch prototype: I don’t know the people providing these services, I usually ask my friends if I need some help, what if instead of show strangers, I can contact my friends I like the visuals and icons, they are clear and easy to identify I can imagine needing these services Service I would like to give: give rides, because I have a car Service I would like to receive: (when the time comes) get rides cooking
