WEEK 3 READING: LEGER, LE CORBUSIER AND PURISM

Question 1: What is Pictorial Space according to Le Corbusier?

Le Corbusier’s view of pictorial space [it]“cannot be entered or circulated through; it is irremediably space viewed from a distance, and is therefore eternally resigned to frontality. [Krauss 1972] According to Le Corbusier, Pictorial Space is a 2-dimensional space of representation constructed by the use of logical composition to form a unity of space. The intangible space is restricted to the frontality and lacks motion around and through the space of the object. This provides limitied information that can be comprehended from a conceptual distance, whilst inferences may be required.

Question 2: The Flatness of Le Corbusier’s painting’s are attributable to two properties. What are they? And what are these pitted against?(Maximum 100 words) One property is texture integers. This is created by adding white lead to his pigments to accentuate the chalkiness in the colour, which serves to convey a sense of continuity from edge to edge of the surface. These textural integers against the grounds of the contour defines an isolated and fragmented object, but fused within the continuity of surface, shape and texture. Another property is the admission of black into painting to an extent. Le Corbusier can control and frontalise it, through interconnection against the textures. This reduces distance between two poles of vision to create a perception of flatness

MARIO’S WORLD

3

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

The first world projection charts the arrangement of the objects within the image given. The use of the grid lines (Appendix) allowed the arrangement of the objects to show depth. However, this was not the final arrangement used, as it was too clustered and lacked spatial harmony when combined with the second world.

4

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD

Completed pen traced Mario world. The new Mario world is defined as a single independent world, hence only 0.1 fineliner was used for outline and 0.4 fineliner was not required (no section cut). Characters were omitted and was drawn on a separate trace to allow for flexible manipulation on illustrator. (refer to Appendix) Moreover, the base of the world was unable to fit in the A3, but this can be resolved on illustrator with the planned dimensions of the structure.

WEEK 4 READING: AXONOMETRIC PROJECTION: NEW GEOMETRIES AND OLD ORIGNS Question 1: Explain the difference between Pictoral (in this case perspectival) space and Projection?

Projections provide actual spatial measurements of objects being portrayed, whereas, perspective drawings does not contain the true dimensions. Perspective drawings extends its vanishing point to infinity, which translates to the distortion of objects within the space that differs from the its measurable size.

Question 2: Where did Axonometric projection first arise, and why? The use of axonometric projection first arose in a military context. It is used to model the projectile motion of militaristic trajectories. Since axonometric projection is “measurable and precise, the numerical accuracy was required in the military, hence it was widely applied. Later in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, axonometric extended to mechanisation and industrialisation as it can be applied scientifically and mathematically.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

This new world coveys a harmonious sense of space through the employment of the contrast between the organic forms of the mountains and waterfall, and the geometric articulation of the landscape. The subtle change of tones in colour defines the source of light and further emphasises the three-dimensional expanse.

APPENDIX

Equipments: T-square, Set square, pencil, eraser, fineliner pen (0.1), masking tape, mounting board, ruler

Axonometric projection of the basic landscape/ boundaries of the two worlds and grid line for ease of projection to create depth and space

Annotation. Insert 3-4 images of your drawing in progress Projection of the first image backwards. Overlayed on the grid lines and world boundaries. 8

Projection of the seond image forward. Overlayed on the previous projections

Trace of all the overlays to produce the final three dimensional projection of a new mario world

Scan of mario characters and objects for trace on illustartor and re-arrangement over the new mario world.

Use of projection lines to ensure the width of the projected world is 1:1 to the image.
