Rethink Contemporary Bath

Re-design of historic sites

Individual Work Site: Villa Hadrian, Rome, Italy Summer 2022

In the 2nd century BC, the Romans turned bathing into a social activity, building huge public baths with gardens, saunas, swimming pools and other ancillary facilities, and the baths are arguably the greatest building in Roman history. Nowadays, due to the fact that most people have a relatively private bathing space, in addition to the impact of global infectious diseases, people have gradually forgotten the bathing culture. Long-term self-isolation has increased the distance between people, and people's understanding of the bathing culture is not very profound.

In order to re-educate people about public baths as an indispensable way to socialize, I transformed the ruins of Hadrian's Palace, which has a rich cultural background of baths, to rethink urban baths in contemporary society.

The architecture here is a kind of node connecting the past and the present bath culture.

General Mapping of Villa Adriana

Above The Ground

The shape of the building is similar to that of the Serapeum and Canopus adjacent to it, and I have three main entrances. There are corridors and walkways on the surface, and people can enter the pavilion space on the mezzanine level through the entrance on the ground.

Column & Vault

The interior of the building uses a twelve-sided reinforced concrete structure as the main support structure. And on one side of each column there is an arched corridor with supporting columns the vault and supporting columns are made of reinforced concrete.

Defamiliarization

——Musuem in a speculated reality

Individual Work

Site: Burj Khalifa, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Spring 2024

The concept of "Defamiliarization" seems convoluted. But to put it simply is to emphasize that something in content and form is contrary to what people usually think is reasonable and reasonable in life. The antagonism and conflict created the phenomenon of "Defamiliarization". In architecture, "Defamiliarization" strengthens the sensory experience brought by architecture. When you are in the scene, you will be uncertain about the space or the facade you see.

I have made a theoretical study on the concept of "Defamiliarization", and made a detailed study of the concepts of "Ambiguity" and "Transparency" in architecture, and thought about how to apply them in the design of facade and space. The overall design starts from the perspective of the facade, because I think the facade of the building can bring the most intuitive feeling to people. The collage of opposites is misinterpreted and transformed to generate a new facade, and the technique of facade defamiliarization is continued to generate the interior space of the building.

About Time

——An Exploratory Travel to Light Utopia

Individual Work

Site: Chongqing,China Summer 2024

What is traveling? Traditionally, people travel from a permanent place of residence to a definite destination for recreation, relaxation or to perform various activities. People may derive pleasure from the process and relax physically and mentally. Thinking about it another way, if traveling could be a slow exploration of a miniature utopia from the existing environment. That is to say, those who are dissatisfied with the current state of their living environment, how would they imagine and think about the ideal living environment?

My site is in Chongqing, China, a city known as the "City of Mountains" because its main buildings are built on hillside terrain. This pattern makes urban planning and internal transportation very complex and threedimensional. The city also suffers from a high density of buildings and a lack of commuting. The people living in the city also lack long time contact with nature, and I want the ideal city to be coavered with green. Therefore, I chose a neighborhood with urban characteristics to transform and experiment with, creating a light utopian natural space for the people living in the neighborhood.

Infrastructures in Oil Spill Areas

—— Responding to the Nigerian Oil Crisis with Infrastructural Urbanism Theory

GroupWork:

Site & Theroy Research 33% Basic Drawings 33% Rendering Drawings 33%

Site: Oil spill area in southern Nigeria Summer 2024

In Ogniland, southern Nigeria, where the discovery of oil should have brought prosperity and rich natural resources, an intricate web of conflicts between local residents, capital, and government has intensified, binding the land tightly in corruption and poverty.

To face the complex challenges of the Ogniland region, we adopted Stan Allen's theory of Infrastructural Urbanism as a design framework. Focusing on the structural, functional, and transformative nature of infrastructure, we aim to mitigate the environmental problems of the oil spill and promote sustainable community development through innovative infrastructure systems.

We propose different solution strategies based on four representative scenarios We propose different solution strategies based on four representative scenarios. Soil Purification System, Water Purification System, Environmental Monitoring and Management System and Needle Aquaculture System. We also propose spaces and functions that are compatible with these systems.

Through these innovative infrastructure systems, we hope to bring substantial changes to the Ogniland region and promote the comprehensive development of the local economy, society and environment.
