Ngong House a highly individual luxury hotel Africa has a pulse and Paul Verleysen feels it. The owner of Ngong House, on land originally part of Ngong Hills, Karen Blixen's vast coffee estate and with nine rooms for guests, came to Africa over 40 years ago. A young man, he wanted to avo i d n at i o n a l s e r v i c e i n Belgium and learnt that he could do two years aid work instead. In two weeks, after receiving his call-up papers, he had proposed to his girlfriend, published bans and married and left for Congo to work as a volunteer teacher. One can only imagine how remote and difficult Congo was at that time, just a decade after its 1960 independence from Belgium, with all the horrors and violence that had led to that. We might recall Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, set in an old Congo river station, for some of the background. Paul returned briefly to Belgium but was then in Rwanda for 16 years as a development aid worker for the Belgian government before gradually becoming head of Belgium Aid.
Coast and was then posted to Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, for four years. But he knew this was the place for him and, in 1994 when that time was up, resigned and bought Ngong House. He completely transformed the old colonial house on 4ha and started with four rooms for guests. He did most of the building work with his son, Christof, whose culinary creations became famous and who had taken over the running of Ngong House when he died in a plane crash. Winner of the Good Safari Guide's 2009 best safari hotel award, Ngong House is a highly individual luxury hotel. Its guest rooms are like tree houses, on stilts, all bush timber with a lodge feel. Each is different but has a bedroom, bathroom and terrace; all are of wood, thatch or glass. A four-poster bed, rugs, a writing desk. There is ground-level accommodation for those less physically able. Visiting Belgian chefs have infused the place with a cooking style and they have trained Paul, as they did Christof. There is a campfire round which guests tend to gather every evening. Most guests arrive in Nairobi ready to set off on safari and stay just one night. And Ngong House takes them away from city hotels and straight into it. Paul says: "I wanted to create a place where you feel your adventure has already started."

What happens to kids who fail exams?
T
his is a season for exams, and candidates are fully aware that how they perform will determine their future lives. For those who pass the KCSE exams, they will be admitted to study lucrative courses in colleges and universities in Kenya and around the world. For those who pass the KCPE exams, they will be assured of a place in a good secondary school, which in turn will determine their future performance in exams and in life. However, what happens to those who will not be as fortunate to pass the exams. Will the future have been closed to them? Are there any mechanisms to ensure that those who don't pass the KCPE and KCSE exams can indeed have a better future and be able to meaningfully contribute to Kenya's economy? To this end, there have been calls to modify the exam system to make it more inclusive and most importantly, to capture the full essence of learning. One of the suggestions that have been put forward is to use the continuous assessment tests (Cats). In this way, a candidate's score in exams, say from standard four onwards, will be aggregated, and the candidate will then have a full report card by the time they are in standard eight. This will do away with the pressure that candidates usually have at the time of doing exams. This will mean that teachers will have to keep records of students' tests from the earliest class. However, even then, such a system could face several challenges. For example, how will the authorities ensure that the exams are uniform across the board?
Schools could aggregate together, and the exams could be administered from a district or a county level to ensure some uniformity, and also because, given that Kenya's selection to the next level of education is based on a quota system, it would be easier to compare students performance from regions that face similar conditions. This will eliminate the need for students to pile up pressure as the D-Day for the big exams draws near. The other question that comes to mind about exams is that the schools are not uniform in quality. A student at Alliance High School will definitely perform much better with the most minimal of effort, while a student at Garissa High School may be forced to work much harder to achieve the same level of results. This shows that more should be done to help improve the facilities in all schools, so that students in all schools have a level playing field. Exams are important in determining who moves to the next level of education, and in effect, act as a screening tool. They help one assess whether the students have learnt the concepts that were taught. The exams also help to compare students against one another, and identify areas of weaknesses and strengths. By incorporating innovative aspects into the exam process, we would create an examination system that will help to improve Kenya's education system, and ensure that our students excel in the classroom as well as in the workplace, regardless of where they find themselves in the world.
