I used to be fashionable. Well. Maybe that’s a bit of a stretch. What I should say is I used to try to be fashionable. I’ve never been a trendsetter. I don’t think I could have ever done one of our MyStyle’s because I didn’t focus that much on creating a personal style. But I did pay attention to the trends. Eye on I-380

HIAWATHA — The Interstate 380 Corridor needs to be beautified, a group of volunteers is suggesting. Those volunteers, called the Eye 380 Committee, used a $37,000 grant to beautify the southwest quadrant of I-380 and Boyson Road — just to show what could be. Landscape workers planted shrubs and flowers in the area, hoping “that may become a model to beautify the freeway at a number of locations in the Cedar Rapids metro area.” The next step? Find out if there’s interest in duplicating the Eye 380 design at other locations along the interstate through Cedar Rapids. Contributions can be sent to Eye 380, in care of Trees Forever, 770 Seventh Ave., Marion, IA 52302. For more information about Eye 380, people can contact the Hiawatha Parks Department at (319) 393-1515. CLIFF JETTE/THE GAZETTE

PRIME TIME Whew, what an opening week for the NFL! A thrilling Thursday night overtime game and the doubleheader on Monday night. Frankly, I’m a bit winded. I know, I know. I should have done my own preseason training — going out for a beer for the first quarter, then ramping up until I got into game shape. Either way, I’m a trooper and I’ll power through.

Being the type of person that likes to change my bag with every outfit, I needed a place to get cute purses without the designer price tag. I figured that if I was struggling, there must be other women out there with the same dilemma and I was determined to find the solution. The Purse-N-ality concept was dreamt up in August of 2005 with the opening of my first store in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Marion location followed, opening in the fall of 2007. At any given time, our stores have several thousand bags on the shelves. A wide selection is very important to me, but I also strive to provide uniqueness. For these reasons, new shipments with fresh styles arrive weekly. Most of the handbag styles in my stores are inspired by designers. For example, if you visit your local department store and find a Coach©

style that retails for $400, you could most likely find something similar at Purse-N-ality for $45. We carry bags

that are inspired by many designers, such as Chanel©, Dooney & Bourke©, Prada©, Jimmy Choo©, Brighton©, and Kate Spade© to name a few. We also offer a great rewards

program. It’s absolutely free, and you receive a $10 gift card for every $100 you spend. We simply record all of your purchases over time, and issue you a complimentary gift card every time you reach $100. Essentially, it’s an additional 10% savings over time!! A lot of my customers stop by several times a week to check out the new items, and it’s been a lot of fun getting to know my fellow purse freaks in the Cedar Rapids area!

CANOEING The first time I went canoeing was a disaster. My scrawny preteen arms refused to paddle in the straight line required to get me to shore, and I was left stranded in the middle of a tiny pond until someone rowed out and towed me back to shore.

KELSEY SHEEHY PHOTOS

While I have bulked up considerably since middle school, I was still a little apprehensive to make another solo venture onto any body of water larger than a swimming pool. So I enlisted a few friends to help me celebrate the passing of summer on the waters of Lake Macbride. Happily, the second attempt went off without a hitch. Our party of four rented a pair of two-person canoes, bound them together with the straps of our life jackets (I’m not sure this technique is recommended by the park service), and paddled out to explore the 940 acre lake. The row was pleasant, until my left bicep and shoulder started to burn — tying our canoes together restricted my paddling to one side of the boat. Fortunately, my companions at the helm of our fleet were easily distracted by conversation and it was not long before we were floating, paddles in our laps, taking in the beauty of the lake.

PETER KELCHEN

No insurance? Our canoe trip caught the end of the rental season at Lake Macbride, but you still can get your canoeing fix at McDonough Canoe rental (www. mcdonoughcanoerental.com) in Monticello until mid-October.

Plan for a full day at McDonough’s. Its canoe trips take you down eight In order to make it back to shore miles of the Maquoketa River, ending before our rental period expired at Pictured Rocks Park. EVEN THE WEB COULD BE GREENER Information technology (aka that swirling cloud of information called the World Wide Web and all the technologies we use to access it) may seem sort of green. Or at least, that it’s not not green. But take a look at these stats and you’ll understand the factors driving greener information technology practices and products. Energy availability — 1.5 billion people are now online worldwide; 80 percent of the world’s population however is not. In some areas, new power feeds using traditional methods are difficult or impossible to obtain.

● Equipment costs and life cycle — Information Technology equipment — like computers, monitors, printers — is replaced every three to five years, so by 2010 there’s the potential for one billion computers worth of e-waste. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, we discard 20 to 50 metric tons of computer related equipment worldwide each year. This figure represents 5 percent of all municipal solid waste.

● People, profit and planet — Information Technology practices are subject to the same triple bottom line success factors as businesses. Practices that positively impact people, profit and the planet is the new way to measure success.

● Energy and equipment costs — Information Technology demand is growing 12 times faster than the overall demand for energy. Governments worldwide are moving to enact legislation that will track and limit carbon emissions.

Data center costs — Data centers consumed about 180 billion kilowatts in 2007, a figure that is expected to double by 2010. Escalating equipment and energy costs within the data center combined with rising carbon emissions is helping create the perfect storm.

Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.

READ SLOWLY, BOOK THREE MAY BE AWHILE I’ve mentioned that “THE

where her maybe-friend Michael Blomquist works as an investigative journalist, was just about to publish one of the victim’s articles that would expose high level Swedish officials in a scandal.

GIRL WITH A DRAGON TATTOO is a good read if

you’re looking for a twisted international thriller. The author Stieg Larsson sadly died in 2004 after writing three books in the series (though his Web site speaks of rumors of a partially finished fourth novel). All were published posthumously in his native Swedish. The trickle to the United States has been behind by about three years, but fans can now read book No. 2, “THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE. The Girl, Lisbeth Salander, is back

and more mysterious than ever. This time, her past is the central mystery. After police discover her fingerprints on a murder

weapon, Salander becomes the primary suspect in the murder of a couple who was involved in an investigation of the sex trade in Sweden. The Millennium magazine,

Thus begins the investigation into Salander’s life. From “Tattoo, we already know that she was determined mentally incompetent as a child. The reason is veiled almost until the end of Fire. Blomquist challenges the police to a race for the truth. The official investigation focuses exclusively on Lisbeth as a crazed mentally incompetent

killer, while Blomquist looks for an alternate explanation. Racy and dark, this book doesn’t feel as long as its 569 pages. I’m not going to lie, the ending is a true cliffhanger that requires readers to pick up the third book in the series,

“THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST.

Frustratingly, we’ll have to wait until next year for that to be published in English. Read slowly. — CAITLIN

to have dance back on the programming, beginning earlier this month with Hancher benefit performances by the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago and at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines. The dance season continues with tap tribute “Thank You, Gregory” at City High School on Jan. 23 and the Luna Negra Dance Theater at the Englert Theatre on April 16.

The journey onward has been eased by cooperation from the alternate sites. “In every single one of the venues we’ve worked with, the staff at those venues has bent over backward,” April 16: Luna Negra Dance Theater, Englert Theatre, Iowa City ● May 9: SPOT: The Hancher Family Arts Adventure: Michael Cooper, “Masked Marvels & Wondertales,” Mabie Theatre, UI Theatre Building, Iowa City

says Swanson.

He expects two holiday shows to crank up the heat next winter, when fiddler Natalie MacMaster blazes through the Riverside Casino Event Center on Dec. 5 and Straight No Chaser brings its hot a cappella harmonies to the Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge on Dec. 8. Audiences looking for an evening of elegance will find that when the City Lights Orchestra from Chicago plays for a dinner and dance Oct. 2 in the Riverside Casino Event Center.

Swanson says his staff is making the best of the loss of Hancher. “We want to continue to be creative and add new venues as we continue this journey,” he says. “It can’t contain us. Nothing’s going to stop us from seeking new places to continue bringing the magic to our audiences, but we want to do it in unique ways, too. “We want to do the best we possibly can — but we’ll sure be glad when we have a building again.” — DIANA NOLLEN, THE GAZETTE
