Hungry? From neighborhood watering holes to fancy schmancy dining, these places might do the trick.

What’s coming, what’s here and what you better hurry to the multiplex to see before it’s just another title in your Netflix queue.

Not sure what to do this week? Come hang with the Hoopla Crew at Benz Beerfest.

Jayson West’s dishes at Daniel Arthur’s are as unique as the restaurant’s space.

To read or not to read? Is it a question?

Quit whining that there’s nothing to do around here. We did the hard work. Go enjoy yourself.

Hoopla is published weekly by Gazette Communications.

I’m just

SAYIN’ {

Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.

I’ve been waiting to write this column for months. At least three or four. And that seems like FOREVER! I’ve been itching to write it ever since we started the ball rolling on a redesign of our Web site, HooplaNow.com And. Now. The transformation is complete. Yay! Have you seen it yet? I’ll wait while you go check it out. G’head. Go. It’s

www.HooplaNow.com

Are you there yet? Now? OK. Isn’t it pretty? Of course I can’t take any credit for the design. That was all Seth, our art director. And the web development? Nope. Not me either. Our super duper web dev dudes get the props for all the widgety coolness, the photo galleries, the featured articles. Pretty much the fact that the site works at all. But I do get the credit for whining about the old site enough that I got this new site to parade around. Sure. It got the job done. Sort of. I was probably more critical of it than anyone else. Because it didn’t match my vision and it definitely didn’t reflect the cool design in these pages. Now. It totally does. The site says: Entertainment. I’m fun. Search me. Spend time here. Read all about the cool people and things happening in the Corridor.

Funny thing is. All those things were there before. You just couldn’t tell at first blush because the packaging wasn’t as pretty and the navigation certainly left something to be desired. In the week or so since we flipped the switch and the site went live, I’ve heard from many of you saying how much you like the new site. I’m glad to hear it. But, the beauty of the web is that we can always change something if enough people tell us something is funky. So mosey around the site. Click on the links. Read the stories. Check it out. If you find something broken. Please. Tell us. Send an e-mail to hoopla@hooplanow.com I hope you enjoy the new site as much as I do.

All the news you didn’t know you needed to know.

A year later POSTVILLE — It’s been a year since the immigration raid on the Agriprocessors meat packing plant in Postville. In the raid, 389 employees were arrested for illegal status to falsifying documents, such as social security cards. Minors were working at the plant in violation of child labor laws as well. Agriprocessors has declared bankruptcy and many of the town’s Hispanic businesses have closed, as a result. Sholom Rubashkin, former vice president of Agriprocessors Inc., is facing 9,311 state labor law violations.

Treasure hunt The season of true bargain hunting has begun with citywide garage sales. Hunters are armed with maps, small bills and change, and a plan. The most important strategy in getting a good deal is to get to the sale early. Really, really early. Before the birds are even awake. Robins’ citywide garage sale is this weekend, followed by Hills on May 29 and 30.

Fresh start CEDAR RAPIDS — Do some serious networking, Hawaiian-style, at the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce’s Corridor PM Exchange. Stop by

Children’s dishes and a tea set are for sale at a garage sale during the citywide Coralville sale May 2. More citywide sales are coming up this spring and summer across Eastern Iowa.

ServiceMaster 380 to meet new people, enjoy food, drinks and live entertainment. Plus, you’ll be one of the first to hear about the new group for young professionals in the Corridor — a result of the merger between Access Iowa and the Next Generation Commission. The launch of the new group includes unveiling the official name and logo (our sources say, brace for impact) and explaining the mission, purpose, structure and scope of current and longterm projects offered to program members and supporters. The exchange is from 5 to 7 p.m. May 19 at ServiceMaster 380, 5607 Fourth St. Ct. SW, Cedar

Rapids. For more information, go to www.accessiowa.org

Just the facts, ma’am CEDAR RAPIDS — If you get in an accident in Cedar Rapids, make sure you have a point-and-shoot camera on you. With cases of no-injury accidents, Cedar Rapids police are less likely to file an accident report than in, say, Davenport. This could mean months of insurance companies haggling over who is at fault for the accident.

The great outdoors

For all those outdoor and nature nuts, you know what I’m talking about. Fishing and hunting are the name of the game. The thrill when your fishing pole gets a hit by something big and the prize and adrenaline rush when you’re bringing it in. There’s nothing like it! Bring it on!

Country Living

I never thought I would be on the road, riding a bike. Now it’s in my blood. Where else can you hit the road, be competitive, and get a good workout? OK, I’m sure some of you have other things, but cycling is a workout like no other. You want to burn you legs up, hit the hill out on Rosedale off Mount Vernon Road.

Cinch up your laces and hit the road. Just like cycling, running gets in your blood and it doesn’t leave. Sure it hurts at the beginning, but just like all things, once you get used to it, you’ll want more. I take on the country gravel roads where I don’t have to worry so much about the busy traffic or idiots traveling Mach 1. As long as you’re not scared of the cow crap, or other animals in the country, I’d recommend you get out and try it. Who knows, you might like it.

How many of you have families? Those that do know what I’m talking about when I say they are part of my fave five. The fun times outside with my boys, whether it’s playing catch or giving them an underdog on the swing. It’s all part of this thing we call life, and I wouldn’t give it up for the world. I’m a family guy. What can I say.

If you’re reading this part last, you probably have me figured out. I’m a guy that loves to be outside, in the country and with the fam. It’s the best combination. Country living isn’t always about the idea of living in the country; rather it’s about neighbors who will help you out no matter what. It’s about the freedom to go outside and race a go-cart around the yard and make all the noise you want. You get my point.

Ricky spent most of his days on sunny beaches in Cali, until his dad stumbled upon Cornell College in Mount Vernon. They spoke with football coach Steve Miller and discovered that the Rams offered football, baseball and computer science. The decision was easy.

I was skeptical but after five more weeks of training, I went to Des Moines and was runner-up in the novice 178-pound division,” Ricky said.

“I CAN’T DO EVERYTHING I WANT IN A GIVEN WEEK. IT’S FUN WHEN IT MAGICALLY WORKS ITSELF OUT.”

Jayson West, 24, Cedar Rapids

Spicing it up at one of Cedar Rapids’ historic hot spots.

Executive Chef, Daniel Arthur’s

Appetizer: Sushi graded scallops with mozzarella and bacon fondue Entree: Blue Crab stuffed in pork loin Dessert: Bread pudding

Take us back to the beginning. When did you first get the cooking itch?

I have my grandmother to thank for the cooking itch. Cooking was a huge part of her life, and it rubbed off on me. My first job started as a fry cook in my hometown of Keokuk. From there, I was always in a restaurant — serving, cooking, etc. I went to St. Paul’s Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute, then interned in Austin, Texas. When I moved to Cedar Rapids, I was offered a position at Daniel Arthur’s and have been here for two and a half years.

How do you describe your style?

It’s quite the mix. French cuisine with some southern influence. I’ve picked up things from training all over, and it’s evolved into something I can really call my own. I contrast colors and flavors, try different methods. It’s more than cooking to me; it’s a way to express my style. That’s what makes cooking such a unique experience, every time.

What are the kitchen ingredients and tools you can’t live without?

My hand blender, chef knife, chilies, heavy crème and roasted garlic. Staples to my kitchen.

What’s unique about Daniel Arthur’s?

RYAN TAYLOR PHOTOS

Details: Daniel Arthur’s, 813 Third Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, eat-in, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 5 p.m. to close Monday through Saturday, (319) 362-9340 or www.danielarthurs.net

The fresh flown-in seafood and high-end plate designs are things you’d find in bigger cities. People are pleasantly surprised at the quality in both. I think the building itself is also a cool element. The history it holds in the city makes it unique.

Where do you hope to be in five years?

Continuing to help Daniel Arthur’s grow. Doing things new and creative and impressing people. — QUINN

And every morning, I notice a small sign for The Flat Tire Cafe and say to myself, “Self, this would be a great spot to have lunch one day.” So I finally mustered up the courage and invited myself to lunch. I must say, I am a great date. I held the door open, paid for the entire meal and made gracious conversation with … myself. Most of the patrons were older ladies enjoying the antique shops and business groups or couples. I didn’t notice anyone bat an eye when I sat down all by my lonesome. The menu is all about impeccably executed panini ‘sammiches’ and fresh salads. I ordered The Flat Tire panini, a house specialty, with a garden side salad. My salad was beautifully designed and the tangy balsamic vinaigrette was spiked with fresh herbs. The panini was a melty gooey masterpiece piled with provolone, juicy thin slices of steak, onions and mushrooms. The crisp chewy bread couldn’t contain all that wonderful cheese so it oozed out, got seared on the press and created a delicious cheese crust. I hope I get asked on another date. I gave myself my phone number. We’ll see if I call. — ANDREA

BOOKTALK {

Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.

TO READ OR NOT TO READ I, like many others, take it as a given that reading is good. From the time I was little, it was hammered into my head that reading makes you a smarter, more articulate and well-rounded individual. I was aghast to find that not everyone shares this assumption. Some, like Mikita Brottman, argue that “reading turns us into anti-social misanthropes who would do better to be out in the world than home with a book.” This was an argument set forth by Mr. Brottman in “THE SOLITARY VICE: AGAINST READING.” Mr. Brottman clearly did not grow up with the same parents and teachers I did. With all due respect to Mr. Brottman, I know a lot of readers and would hardly characterize them as “anti-social misanthropes.” In fact, the readers I know are among the most social of my acquaintances, with plenty of friends. I have yet to meet a reader who is a “misanthrope (someone who dislikes people).” Granted, if a fellow reader didn’t like people or social situations, the likelihood of our paths crossing is minimal. Still, I find it hard to accept the argument that reading is not good for you or turns you into a social outcast of sorts. So if you start with the premise that reading is good for you, as I do, does that extend to all reading or only certain reading? Is reading Star Magazine somehow less good for you than reading “SUMMER READING” by Hilma Wolitzer (which I just finished)? And is “Wuthering Heights” more “good” than “Summer Reading.” And who out there is qualified to judge a book’s “goodness” factor? While you are pondering these questions, pick up “SHARP OBJECTS” by Gillian Flynn. One word describes “Sharp Objects.” DISTURBING. But disturbing in a can’t-putdown type of way. Our protagonist is a slightly unbalanced journalist named Camille who works for a paper in Chicago. Two young girls are murdered in Camille’s hometown, and her editor sends her home to report on the story, hoping that her insider status will enable her to obtain all the juicy details. While Camille is home, she uncovers disturbing truths about her past, her family and what really happened to her deceased sister. Excellent! I highly recommend it. If you are up for a more “enlightening” read, try “THE SHACK” by William P. Young. “The Shack” has been on the bestseller list for weeks. The basic premise is as follows: a man, whose daughter is brutally murdered, receives a note from God. God asks him to come to the place where his daughter was murdered. Once there, he meets the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. “The Shack” documents his conversation with the Holy Trilogy. Truth or not? Who knows, but it definitely makes you think. WHAT’S NEXT FOR ME? “BLINDNESS” BY JOSE SARAMAGO FOLLOWED BY “SEEING,” ALSO BY JOSE SARAMAGO. — NATALIE

The intentional decision to set Unknown Component as a solo experience keeps Keith true to a concentrated path, complete with a sound he can call his own. “I don’t know if I was inspired to write music as an individual, or if the decision was one of necessity, but it’s definitely allowed me total creative freedom,” he says.

Marion Arts Festival

Information: www.marionartsfestival.com

What do you get when you combine amazing art from across the country and a quaint city park? The Marion Arts Festival, of course! And there’s so much to do at the 17th annual, award-winning event (it was recently named the number one festival of this size in a 13-state Midwest region. Take that, Des Moines!) that you’ll want to stay all day. The self-proclaimed “come-as-you-are” festival offers stunning art for purchase, hands-on art activities, entertainment (local favorites Junk Funk will be back), food and fun for the whole family. And best of all, it’s

free.

Chris Vance

This year, festival artists are traveling from Florida, Washington, New Mexico and New York (15 states in all) to display their creations. Plus, 21 of the 50 exhibitors are making their festival debut, so you’re bound to find something new and eye-catching. The Empty Bowl project also is returning to the festival. Student-made ceramic bowls created by area art classes and donated to the festival are sold for

around $5 to help support local food banks. But don’t just look and buy. The Marion Arts Festival allows you the opportunity to be an artist, too. The Art in the Depot program invites all attendees to work side-by-side with an Iowa artist to create a piece of public art. This year, festivalgoers will help guest artist John Paul Schafer produce a large-scale painting for Taylor Elementary, which is scheduled to reopen in August 2009 after being flooded last summer. There’ll also be artist demonstrations, including a daylong large-scale metal sculpture welding demonstration by Mount Vernon artist Dale Merrill. And if you’re an early bird, get up and run (or walk) the Marion Arts Festival 5K. The Marion Arts Festival and related activities run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at City Square Park in Marion. It’s free. For more information, go to www.marionartsfestival.com
