I’m just

SAYIN’ {

Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.

This weekend, we honor our mothers. And for those of us who are mothers — maybe we’ll be lucky enough to be served breakfast in bed (wink. hint. hint.). Writing this reminds me that I need to place an order for flowers for my own mother. It also reminds me of a question I’ve been asked lately. Several of you have asked me who Hoopla is for. The short answer? You. Hoopla is

for you!

For a longer answer, read on. Take, for example, the 33-year-old super-hip, super-fun mom who recently asked me if Hoopla was for her. Yes! She’s exactly who Hoopla is for.

■ ■

Hoopla

■ ■

And Hoopla is all about making sure that you know about it. That you’re not hearing someone talk about a great event around the water cooler on Monday and wishing you’d known about it advance. So, if you’re that 38-year-old with four kids, you don’t need special permission to attend our events or go to something we mention in here. If it sounds interesting. Go. It’s for you. Just like if you like reading Hoopla. Do. It’s for you.

Hoopla is for anyone who wants to know what is going on in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area. Whether you’re 18 and footloose and fancy-free or 38 with four kids.

To the question about parents: We do try to include a balance of events, particularly on page 20’s Get Out, that would appeal to families or are kid-friendly. But we don’t mark them that way. Should we? Tell us. And we will.

We say we’re for young adults. And we are. But that only means what you read in these pages is information and events we’ve subjectively decided young adults would like. We’re certainly not saying these events are exclusively for young adults.

Even though we’d personally like to say hello to everyone who reads Hoopla each week, we can’t. And we certainly can’t read your mind. But, this is not a dictatorship. I know I sound like a broken record, but Hoopla really is for you. Make it yours. Want to see something we don’t already cover? Want to write about it? Send me an e-mail at carly@hooplanow.com

And, to be clear, we define young adults as anyone in their 20s and 30s. Kids do not automatically age you out of the demographic. If so, I’d be in trouble.

PA GE 4

Since my daughter was born last year, I’ve often said that I didn’t truly appreciate how much there was to do around here until I had to start getting a baby sitter. That’s totally true. I could be out every night of the week at a performance, networking event, exhibit or listening to live music. I’m not, of course. I like spending time with my daughter way too much. But the point is, I could be. That’s how much there is going on around here.

All the news you didn’t know you needed to know.

Safety first

Motorists on Interstate 380 are just starting to see the simplest, cheapest safety measures recommended in a recently completed safety audit. Among the “shorter-term, lower-cost options” identified in the audit conducted last November are the installation of larger reflective panels along the edge of the pavement at the ramp to Highway 30 from I-380 southbound. New reflectors have been placed along both the interstate’s main route and the ramp to better delineate the routes motorists should take as the ramp splits from 380 and then splits again for Highway 30’s westbound and eastbound lanes.

also known as the swine flu, in Eastern Iowa. But the Iowa Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention are all over it and offer this advice: wash your hands. It’s simple, but prevents the spread of disease. Your hands touch everything, including the food you put in our mouth. If you’re sick, stay home. Don’t be a hero and try to save up your sick days. MYSTYLE {

Want to show off your style?

Raechal likes a funky, yet classic style.

E-mail hoopla@hooplanow.com

Raechal Sabin, 21, Cedar Rapids Student @ Mount Mercy College

What she’s wearing

A gray jumper, short sleeve that buttons down the front and attaches to shorts, with a gray and white cotton scarf. Both are from Express at the Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids. I wore this with black peep-toe wedged heels from Dillards.

What she says

My style is chic, classy, vibrant and sexy. I love cocktail dresses with stilettos, which I pair with big dangly earrings. I love bright colors like pink, orange, purple and lime green. All throughout summer, I wear sundresses with big sunglasses, simple jewelry and wedge heels. The best thing about a sundress is that it can be dressed up with stiletto heels, a fashionable belt or a touch of makeup to transform you from day to night!

An Evening in Celebration of Wine & Tulips Saturday, May 9

If you count wining and dining among your interests, then you might be inclined to attend a celebration of the finer things in life on Saturday. The Friends of KUNI/KHKE present the 24th annual An Evening in Celebration of Wine & Tulips this weekend in Cedar Falls to benefit Iowa Public Radio. The event boasts more than 200 imported and domestic wines for sampling, along with a variety of cheeses, breads and fruits to satisfy any palate. A silent auction also will feature an array of artistic pieces and, of course, a selection of wine and accessories. Good music and good company also are on deck. What’s not to love about that lineup? The Fireside

ANDREA DIETZENBACH PHOTOS

ALL SIGNS POINT TO FIRESIDE I recently decided to see what all the hoopla was about with The Fireside in North Liberty. (Get it? Hoopla!) I’ve never actually been to North Liberty, but there’s a first time for everything. To successfully embark on my adventure, I did what every rube on the Internet does and referred to MapQuest, which is the worst at giving directions. What does a “slight right” even mean? Several wrong turns and much backtracking later, we arrived. The Fireside is actually incredibly easy to find; if you only equipped yourself with a compass and telescope, you’d be there. We were seated in a big comfy booth and forgot all our troubles. The Fireside is upscale, but not in a pretentious way. The menu is full of pretension, but in a really awesome way. I wholeheartedly recommend starting with Bruschetta Caprese. Crunchy baguettes are

topped with flavorful basil pesto, creamy buffalo Mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and basil. I had a hard time choosing between the Shrimp Rachel and Boursin-Bleu Beef Wellington. But seafood is where my heart is and after speaking with the hostess and owner I was confident in my decision to go with the Shrimp Rachel. Succulent shrimp and smoked sausage are topped with a unique combination of curried carrot and lobster bisque and served over bucatini pasta with a side of grilled asparagus. The sweetness of the carrot and lobster contrasted well with the savory of the sausage and shrimp. Such a fantastic dinner and well worth the drive, which will be shorter next time.

MEMOIRS TO REMEMB-OIR

May 8&9 May 15 & 16

I’ve recently read two memoirs that couldn’t be any different: “MY DARK PLACES” By James Ellroy and “THE FLORIST’S DAUGHTER” by Patricia Hampl. Actually, their titles do a great job of showing how different they are. Place their covers side by side to get a good sense of the difference. In “My Dark Places,” James Ellroy reopens his mother’s unsolved murder. In doing so, he also shares some of his darkest moments of addiction and illness. To put it nicely, he was one screwed up guy for a heck of a long time. Not shocking, really, when you consider his mother’s murder and his subsequent life with his dysfunctional father. He takes on a “crazy man” persona as an adolescent and enjoys shocking friends, teachers and classmates. Then he becomes truly obsessed with sex crimes and murder. This leads to an incredibly disturbing imagination. It also made him a wellknown crime writer. He wrote “L.A. Confidential,” “The Black Dahlia” and “White Jazz,” among others. If you want to know why Ellroy is who he is, read “My Dark Places.” On the other hand, Patricia Hampl is the daughter of a florist in St.

Friday, May 8 Paul, Minn., who never leaves her hometown. Rather than shock like Ellroy, Hampl excels at beautiful poetic writing. Sometimes, she wrote a sentence so perfectly beautiful, I had to reread it several times. The actual story she tells is rather boring, but the writing was just so pretty that I enjoyed every minute. In fact, I’m struggling to remember what she even wrote about. Oh yeah, it was about her relationship with her parents and their background. Yawn. But then I found out that she is a poet, and it all

made sense. Ellroy experienced murder at a young age and went on to be a drug addict and crime writer. Hampl experienced flowers and St. Paul elite parties and went on to become a poet. Life does make sense. I don’t usually like memoirs; they are often too whiny, too trite, too obvious. These two are an exception.

You’ve heard their music. Now know their story.

Breaking Even Back in 2002, three Iowa State University freshmen formed a rock band, and Breaking Even was born. Ever wonder how a band gets its name?

BREAKING EVEN

THE REST OF THE STORY: www.myspace.com/breakingeven PETE LOONEY, A LIFELONG AREA RESIDENT, HAS GOT MUSIC IN HIS BLOOD. IF YOU EVER GET OUT TO HEAR LOCAL BANDS, YOU MIGHT SEE HIM JUMP UP ON THE STAGE AND JAM WITH THE BAND. OR IF YOU EVER LISTEN TO KARAOKE, YOU MIGHT SEE HIM UP THERE BELTING OUT SONGS. EITHER WAY, RUN.

“One night in Ames, around 3 a.m., we were super bored, and started a list of potential band names, says drummer Dan Hopper. “We got the list up to about 200. Then we started having our friends vote. We narrowed the list down to 30, then 10, then the best 5, and then – well, we had our name. Minor personnel changes happened, like in every other band. This resulted in the current lineup of John Seidl on guitar and vocals, Dan Hopper on drums and Matt Moss on the bass.

Brucemore’s Plant Sale and Historic Ridgewood Neighborhood Walk Information: www.brucemore.org or (319) 362-7375

As a Corridor resident, you may have already seen what Brucemore has to offer. But do you know what lies beyond the gates of the mansion? Self-guided walking tours are scheduled for Saturday through the Ridgewood historical neighborhood. If you can make it early enough, you also can take home something to brighten your own garden. The garden staff will be there to offer their green thumb help as well, and all proceeds from both events benefit the gardens and landscape restoration projects at Brucemore. The plant sale is held Saturday (5/9) from 9 a.m. to noon followed by the Neighborhood Walk at noon at Brucemore, 2160 Linden Dr. SE, Cedar Rapids.

Information: www.cedar-rapids.com or (319) 398-5009

Ever wonder what Cedar Rapids was like before you came along? If you’re a history buff, or you just enjoy learning a bit about the city you know and love, then mark your calendar and get on board. The Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is hosting a bus tour of the city with historian Mark Stoffer Hunter. The tour will take you around to local attractions, like the old World Theatre (seen in the picture to the left) and flood recovery sites, and you’ll even get a chance to brush up on a little bit of history, too. The tours are being held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday (5/9). Cost is $5 and the tours begin and end at the Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau office, 119 First Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids. MAGGIE MILLS IS A RECENT GRADUATE OF LORAS COLLEGE IN DUBUQUE AND IS HAPPY TO BE BACK LIVING AND WORKING IN HER HOMETOWN OF CEDAR RAPIDS.
