I’m just
SAYIN’ {
Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.
Last year, former Gazette food editor and current Hoopla contributor Anne Kapler and I decided to experiment with Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA. For those unfamiliar with CSA, it’s essentially this: You pay an upfront flat fee that helps farmers subsidize the cost of planting and harvesting their crops. You know. Buying seeds, fertilizer, etc. And in return you get a weekly supply of fresh veggies. Perfect. I thought. I will gorge on farmfresh squash, broccoli, tomatoes, peas and more all summer. Limited grocery shopping necessary. Yum. I looked forward to experimenting with new recipes that would incorporate my weekly haul. Instead I found myself with a weekly supply of veggies that languished in the fridge. The herbs dried out. The kale got limp. The eggplant wrinkly.
I’m sure they are. I’m just not one of them. It’s me. Not them. More adventurous chefs with more time. Someone with creativity in the kitchen. Those people would love participating in a CSA. And they should. Writing this, I went back to look at Anne’s blog posts (www. pearvana.com) to take a look at the photos from our weekly
share. Looking at the photos, I’m actually embarrassed I didn’t take more advantage of the CSA. All those veggies gone to waste. For shame!
This summer, though, I’m looking to mend my ways with a different form of community supported agriculture – farmers markets. Last summer, I couldn’t justify filling my fridge with more veggies when the others wasted away in the crisper drawer. This summer, though, I can shop to my heart’s delight. And stock up on veggies I know I’ll use. Maybe I’ll skip the daikon. But I’ll be sure to load up on the peas. I have plenty of options. There’s a farmers market practically every day of the week. Marion, Hiawatha, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City. Without going far, I could have farm-fresh veggies each day. For a full list, check out page 12.
I was paralyzed by the unfamiliar items. And I admittedly was just not creative enough to use the gads of kale and dozens of peppers we got each And if you haven’t been to a farmers market downtown yet, week. cancel whatever you have planned this weekend and go. Seriously. They’re more than just fresh veggies. Much much There were veggies I was ecstatic to get every week. more. Peas. I couldn’t get enough. Broccoli. Delish. Onions were always handy to have around. With 160 vendors, there’s so many artisans and food vendors to check out. I challenge you to go and not have a great time. The problem with the CSA was that, while I could take And if you see Jill Wilkins around, tell her thank you. No more pesky grass stains
It’s green, it’s shaggy and it’s coming out of the ground, but it’s not grass. FieldTurf, a synthetic fiber that looks and feels like grass, was installed at Kinnick Stadium last week. The University of Iowa says the turf will be less expensive to maintain than real grass. UI is the seventh Big Ten school to install FieldTurf on a football field.

Congress can move quickly?
U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, said it’s possible Congress could expedite funding for a Cedar Rapids flood protection system. Loebsack took a tour of the Cedar River on Friday with local officials to see what a levee and flood-wall system would look like. If the funds are expedited, two years would be trimmed off the process of getting the funds.
T-shirt for trash
Want a free T-shirt? All you have to do is volunteer to pick up some trash. The Downtown District’s development committee in Cedar Rapids is expecting a lot of garbage after “Floodstock” (the concert raising money for flood relief on June 13) and the Downtown Farmers’ Market bring crowds downtown. If you want to help, show up at the Downtown District office (312 Second Ave. SE) on June 18 at 4 p.m. Call Vanessa Solesbee at (319) 398-0449 or Vanessa@downtowncr.org

Buckets full of berries
Although the June 2008 flood is preventing Iowa’s largest strawberry farm, Hagen’s Berry Farm near Palo, from opening this year, there are other places to go. Bagge Strawberries near Independence will open up June 14. Call (319) 334-3983. Heartland Farms near Waterloo is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Sundays. Call (319) 232-3779. And don’t worry, Hagen’s will return next year. For a full list of growers, visit the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship site at www. agriculture.state.ia.us

Market maven Jill Wilkins, 29, Tipton
Events Director @ Cedar Rapids Downtown District
You can pretty much find Jill Wilkins in downtown Cedar Rapids every weekend this summer. And not just because it’s the place to be. It is, in fact, her job to be there.
As events director for the Cedar Rapids Downtown District, Jill coordinates, organizes and manages all district events that take place throughout the year to help “bring people downtown and create vibrant experiences.”
DID YOU KNOW Both of Jill’s parents are artists, but she admits she can’t draw a thing. That is, except for a venue map.
“This definitely has the potential to be the best year,” Jill says. “I feel like the community is really looking forward to it.” As is Jill, of course. “I love to just walk around and look at all the products — the produce, baked goods and flowers. They inspire me to try new things,” she says.

THE NOT-SO-SECRET SECRET IS OUT cool, eclectic air about the place. Everything is really laid back. You’re encouraged to come as you are and bring in your own wine (because of the small size, it doesn’t hold a liquor license). If you do have to wait, there are some great bars next door, including the Lincoln Wine Bar, also owned by Matt Steigerwald. We showed up for a Saturday night The staff at Lincoln comes over and dinner a little before 5 p.m. thinking get you when your table is ready. the doors would open and we’d Lincoln Cafe offer the usual be the only ones there. We came selection of hamburgers, sandwiches skipping around the corner to see and salads, but the real draw is the a fully formed line of hungry and eager diners. Fortunately, we got the entree specials. I had the roasted American sturgeon with laughing second-to-last table. bird shrimp, apple wood bacon, butter beans and local watercress. The interior of Lincoln Cafe is Yes, I had to write that down. My shabby chic. The booths and husband chose the grilled Angus tables are worn, but there is a
The secret is out about Lincoln Cafe. OK. It’s probably been out for a while now, but I’m pretty slow to pick up on things. I used to think I was one of the fortunate few who knew of this little restaurant gem. But I know now that I’m just one of many fans.
flatiron steak with grilled potatoes, rapiri, rosemary jus, baby romaine and jalapeno. I must say, it was one of the most delicious dinners I’ve had in a long, long time. Not only was it visually stunning, but the layers of flavor and combination of textures made me practically lick my plate clean. My husband’s steak was equally impressive and monumentally delicious. Lincoln Cafe’s popularity is welldeserved and hard-earned. I can’t wait to see what’s on the menu next. Here’s hoping I’m first in line. — ANDREA

Crazy about Cibo
Bartender @ Cibo
Where did you grow up?
Born in Waterloo. Lived there ’til I was 5 or 6 then moved to Waverly, ’til the end of my sophomore year. After that moved to Cedar Rapids’ southwest side and graduated from Jefferson High School.

How long have you been at Cibo?
319-393-9521
I’ve worked with Tony and his family at the start of American Skillet in Marion around three years ago. I’m proud to say I’ve been working with them longer than any of the other service staff at Cibo.
What is your official title there?
Lead bartender. Although Elisha (the general manager) and I were joking I could be the “bartender extraordinaire.”
Your plasma can be used to manufacture life-saving therapies for the treatment of hemophilia, cancer, burn and trauma patients.
How long have you been bartending?

I started bartending at Lone Star here in Cedar Rapids when I was around 19.

What was your first bartending experience like?

Tell me about Cibo’s Ultra Lounge.
Chill the peach schnapps and pour it into a shot glass. Then slowly pour Irish cream on the top about 1/4-inch thick so it floats on top. Drip the coffee liquor in the center of the Irish cream to create a mushroom cloud shape in the shot glass.
I’ll always remember my $125 tip on a $20 bill. I’ve been fortunate in that I haven’t had to deal with too many problems like some other bartenders have. That’s one of the reasons I like Cibo so much. People come in to have a good time, not to create problems.
The Ultra Lounge just started last month. We turn what is already a classy restaurant into a hip, upscale club that tailors to customers looking for something different. Ultra Lounge is a destination in the Cedar Rapids/Marion area that would normally be found in places like Chicago.
