I’m not what one might call, um, bendy. Athletic is also not a word that comes to mind when Im describing myself. After seeing the photos for this week’s feature story on the upcoming Yoga Festival in Iowa City, though, I’m inspired to try my hand (and the rest of my body) at some yoga. I wouldn’t mind having muscles like our cover model, Victoria Watson of IC. The first (and, organizers hope, annual) Yoga Festival is going to be a great opportunity for yogis and wannabes like me to learn a lot about the ancient exercise. Read more on page

Talking about great opportunities, it seems like there is a bumpercrop of chances to hear some AMAZING MUSIC coming up. The Englert is going to hopping in the next seven days. All three of ourt things to do on pages 8 and 9 this week are taking place there. And check out the list of upcoming concerts at area arenas and other venues.
There really is something for everyone. I know I’ve found a new artist for my iPod. I already have tickets to Tyrone Well’s concert Wednesday at The Mill in Iowa City. I’ve written before about wanting to expand my musical horizons. And who knew, I actually had heard of Tyrone. I just didn’t know it. As Michael mentions in his interview with Tyrone on page 22, many of his songs have been featured on popular television shows. I found a few clips online and not only liked what I heard, but realized I recognized a few tunes as well. Apparently, we’ve had Tyrone’s songs in our iTunes queue since this summer. Sigh. Oh well. He’s new to me. And I’m excited for the concert.

What she’s wearing:
This typically doesn’t happen with my outfits, but both the blue V-neck and skinny jeans are by BDG from Urban Outfitters. The greenish Keds are courtesy of Goodwill. I’m not wearing any jewelry, which is typical for a weekday outfit of mine.
What she says:
My style inspiration usually comes from fashion magazines like Bazaar, Nylon, Vogue and Elle. I also draw inspiration from the people around me, whether it’s a stranger I see on the street or one of my friends. I always have my eye out for new finds and am not afraid to try out a completely different look, but I have always gravitated toward the bohemian vibe.

BREAKFAST MACGYVERED
HAWKEYE GAME SPECIALS
I often feel a little like MacGyver in my kitchen. At the end of the week, when the groceries are low it’s easy to feel uninspired and without a clue as to how the random ingredients in the pantry and refrigerator could make anything tasty. This is when I channel MacGyver to invent something out of nothing. As I was cleaning out our fridge the other night, I discovered apples and peaches that were on their last leg. Instant action was required or their trip into the deep, dark garbage was inevitable. Fruit crisp or crumble? No brown sugar and not enough butter. Drat. I had just made fruit bread recently, so I quickly ruled that out. My mind went to a French dessert called clafoutis. It is a cross between a flan and a soufflé, traditionally studded with cherries. Knowing that I needed a breakfast dish for us to eat for the week, I decided to add extra fruit, cut the sugar in half and use wholewheat flour instead of white flour. Topping it with yogurt also seemed like the perfect way to transfer this dessert into a breakfast. Dilemma solved. Fruit saved. Or so I thought. Then midway through combining the ingredients I realized I was an egg short. I substituted applesauce with only slight hesitation, knowing that it had served me well in the past. The first taste of the baked clafoutis revealed the recipe to be a sucess. Who needs duct tape, tinfoil and bubble gum when you have applesauce and old fruit? — HEATHER

Musicians United to Save the Englert Friday, Oct. 15
Ten years. Ten bands. Ten bucks. Such a deal. Ten years ago, area musicians banded together to record a CD to help save Iowa City’s empty Englert Theatre. It worked. The CD and subsequent monthly concerts in various venues raised $100,000 to help turn the rundown 1912 playhouse into a community showplace. In 2004, the Englert reopened, and now Iowa folk icon Greg Brown and nine other acts are celebrating the Musicians United to Save the Englert (MUSE) effort with a 10th anniversary concert. In addition to Brown, the lineup includes Shame Train. Dave Moore, Brooks Strause & the Gory Details, Matthew Grimm, The Gilded Bats, Monadnoc, The Mayflies and Kevin BF Burt. Nardini was in junior high in Iowa City when she was struck with a mystery illness that doctors first misdiagnosed as late-stage leukemia and then later as a central nervous system-attacking virus. “I couldn’t walk properly, breathe fully or laugh,” she recalls. “I spent two years on a couch at home,

Those “dark days” grew brighter when Nardini and her mother decided to take matters into their own hands. “She always did this strange, embarrassing thing in front of me and my friends that she called ‘yoga,’” Nardini says of her mother. “She said it might help me feel better, learn to breathe freely and become stronger physically.” Figuring it couldn’t hurt, Nardini decided to give yoga

In doing so, she embarked on what has now been a 10-year journey into yoga, “plus mindfulthinking techniques, nutritious eating and anything else I could find” that would help bring her back into balance and health. Slowly but surely, she improved. Today, she is strong, fit and incredibly busy, traveling the world teaching what she’s learned. Originally, Nardini moved to New York City to be a journalist. They serve good, honest home cooking from dinner plate sized tenderloins to breakfast all day. Besides the girth of the tenderloin I also consider a bacon cheeseburger to be classic family restaurant fare. My Super Burger was indeed super with a juicy, meaty patty on a nicely toasted roll. The bacon was Oscar’s is a classic family diner that has been in the thick and not too greasy. The fries on the side were pretty classic – crinkle cut and crispy with lots of area for a long time. I’ve been working in the bar industry for about five years. I’ve always thought of myself as a people person, love taking care of people. A few of my friends were working at Spy Bar and thought I would be a good fit. I got to know the owner and have been here ever since.
It is a lot of fun, but I’m always keeping in mind that even when it feels like everything is under control, I have to be prepared for the unexpected. I do what I have to do and that includes taking charge and staying on top of things.

You can go to a studio to learn but this is so much more laid back — a lot less pressure to be the best but more of a focus on having fun. The Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery
100 Brown St., Iowa City
Children’s Theatre of Cedar Rapids The 59th Season • 2010-2011
LIVE THEATRE!
THE STORY: The reasons for the black angel are equally varied. Legend says
the statue turned from bronze because of a woman named Teresa — whose ashes are buried under the angel — who was mysterious and interested in spells and magic. Her evilness is said to have caused the statue to turn black. Another claims that a man constructed a statue over his wives grave but it turned black due to her infidelity during the marriage. One popular story said that two men went into the cemetery and urinated on the statue and died in a car accident that night has placed a curse on the statue. Legend says every Halloween the statue turns a shade darker because of the souls it has taken throughout the year. It’s said that anyone who touches The Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery at precisely midnight will die. It is also said that if you stare directly into the statue at midnight you will suffer a fatal curse. Women who are kissed in front of the Black Angel are also supposedly doomed to die within six months, unless they are a virgin. EXTRA: There will be a Beyond the Grave Cemetery Tour on Oct. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants should meet at Happy Hollow Park at 800 Brown St. The tour is free, but donations will be accepted. For more information, call the Johnson County Historical Society at (319) 351-5738.
Oak Hill Cemetery
1705 Mount Vernon RD SE, Cedar Rapids
THE STORY: Legend says there is a woman
named Tillie who is said to make her presence know by ensnaring those brave enough to pass through at night. The record of where her plot is has been lost and no one knows where she is actually buried. Rumors say that she was a practicing witch in Cedar Rapids in the 1800’s who was stoned to death. Her grave use to be in an area surrounded by an iron gate, but the gate was eventually removed and Tillie is said to now roam the cemetery. The other story of her is that she was a poor woman in Cedar Rapids who died without any money or possessions and roams the cemetery. THE SCARE: The ghost of the young Czech woman will grant you your wish, but disrespectful visitor’s to her grave will encounter bad luck. Witnesses report seeing a mysterious ghostly woman walking the grounds with a small candle in her hand. EXTRA: Plans are in the works for tours of the cemetery. Check Facebook by searching “Oak Hill Cemetery” for more information.
Matsell Bridge and Mansion Matsell Park Rd., Viola
THE STORY: Though the
mansion no longer exists, legend says the bridge is still haunted. THE SCARE: It is said that if you drive onto the bridge and shut off your car, an unknown force will push you across the bridge. Reports of handprints on people’s back windows have been reported. But beware, local teens are said to believe that if the ghosts of the bridge get angry they will try and break your windows or even push you off the bridge.
Pleasant Ridge Cemetery
4 Miles North of Palo on Palo Marsh Road
THE STORY: This is known as
the “13-Step cemetery,” because there are only 12 steps visible during the day but a 13th appears at night. THE SCARE: Investigators have reported a ghostly phantom running through the cemetery. Visitors have reported seeing a green ball of light hovering over then famous Lewis family graves. Many reported to have been touched or pushed by some unseen forces. Eerie unknown human shapes have also been reported to be seen in the cemetery. The dare is park your car near the entrance of the cemetery and enter and when you return, raccoon or other animals will be covering your car.

GREEN IT
In many organizations, Information Technology is the biggest single consumer of energy. However, technology also can be a positive driving force behind new and innovative green solutions. Green Information Technology simply means finding sustainable solutions to the storing and processing of data. Consider these numbers:
20 TO 50 METRIC TONS
1.5 BILLION
The amount of computer-related equipment we discard worldwide each year. Computers and other related equipment is replaced on average every three to five years. That means by 2011 there’s the potential for one billion computers worth of e-waste.
The number of people who are now online worldwide; 80 percent of the world’s population, however, is not. In some areas, new power feeds using traditional methods are difficult or impossible to obtain.
12 TIMES 180 BILLION The kilowatts data centers consumed in 2008. This amount is expected to double by 2011. Escalating equipment and energy costs in data centers combined with rising carbon emissions are creating the perfect storm.

Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.
A BOOK YOU’LL THINK ABOUT FOR DAYS “METHLAND: THE DEATH AND LIFE OF AN AMERICAN SMALL TOWN” by Nick Reding is the tale of
Oelwein, how the town was destroyed by methamphetamine addiction and what it has done to rebuild. But more than that, Reding explores the history of how meth came to the Heartland and who brought it here.
Using firsthand reporting to tell the story, Reding embeds himself in the community of Oelwein. He talks to the addicts and the bar owners and befriends the town doctor, prosecutor and mayor. Whenever an outsider writes about smalltown Iowa, I have my radar on to look for that condescending tone or incredulity toward how we live. I never caught even a whiff of this in Methland. Perhaps it’s because Reding himself grew up in the Midwest, or perhaps it’s because his dad is from Algona. Whatever the reason, he takes a critical look at a small town (next to where I grew up, by the way) but with a sensitive touch. The stories of meth labs blowing up homes and limbs are terrifying. The effects on the children in the community are nightmarish.
thousands of people unemployed. One of the most interesting perspectives in the book is how Reding describes meth as the hard-working blue-collar drug. In a world with mandatory overtime, the necessity of second jobs, meth became an indispensable way to keep up the energy needed to work around the clock. As employers paid less, the residents had to work more to keep their homes and families. The result was a town where people cooked meth by riding around on bicycles at night.
Unlike other sensationalist drug addicttype memoirs I could mention, Reding A fascinating look at crank in small-town also focuses on the unique (or maybe America, Methland is a book you’ll think not so unique) history of Oelwein, about for days after you finish it. which brought the town to the brink of destruction. TYRONE WELLS people now pay a lot of attention to music on television and in movies,” says Wells. “So, for me it’s always a win when a TV show comes to me wanting to use one of my songs. This last week one of my songs was in The Vampire Diaries and that song went to number two, and I still think it’s in the top 10 of the iTunes Singer/ Songwriter chart.” Few who witnessed Wells’ shaky introduction to musical performance would have guessed that the artist would reach such prominence. For many years Wells battled debilitating stage fright that reduced his beautiful voice to and unsettling squeak.

If you recognize the name Tyrone Wells but can’t quite pinpoint why, there’s a good chance it’s because you read it in the credits of your favorite TV show. The singer/songwriter’s music has been featured on shows such as Rescue Me, One Tree Hill, Grey’s Anatomy and The Vampire diaries. “A lot people are saying that TV is the new radio because
Now Wells feels little anxiety when he performs his regular show. Rest assured Wells will show no unease when he performs in Iowa City on Oct. 20. His stop in Iowa comes after Wells recently released two projects – an EP entitled “Metal & Wood” and a full-length collaboration with his wife, “Different As Can Be.” If Wells’ fans still long for more material they wont have to wait long as he’s already begun working on his next solo full-length album. “I think the full-length album will be kind of a mixed bag,” Wells says. “I’m aiming to have about half the album feel like the last EP, and then also have some songs that are more fully produced and epic.”

INSANGUINE A year and a half ago, a band was forming in Iowa City, and needed a name. The guitarist combined “insane” and “sanguine” to create Insanguine. They kept the name even after realizing that ensanguine actually means “to be covered in blood.”
THE TALENT: Jarien Sky (guitar, vocals), Tay Sky (lead guitar,
vocals), Troy Tietge (drums), Byron (bass), Gwendolyn HartleyPrime (vocals, lyrics) THE SOUND: European folk metal THE GIGS: 9 p.m. Oct. 16 @ Gabe’s, 330 E. Washington St. Iowa City (with Identity Crisis, Havokkrier and Violent Intent); 9 p.m. Nov. 13 @ Stashed (formerly Next Door), 1736 16th Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids THE REST OF THE STORY: Facebook and MySpace
The band’s story goes back further than a year and a half ago, though. Jarien and Tay began playing together as teens. “Music was something that helped us overcome the challenges young people face,” Jarien says. Tay and Jarien have been friends with Gwen for a decade. “She responded to an online ad we had posted, looking for a female
vocalist,” Jarien says. “She didn’t know it was us.” They met Troy through a mutual friend. Then Troy met Byron at a local pub, and they had their bass player. The bulk of their music is original. “It’s more exciting to create than to re-create,” says Troy. “We write songs that reflect our diverse influences and interests,” added Jarien. “European metal is the greatest influence on our guitar and drum-driven songs. Lyrically, we mostly reflect on events in society and our own
lives. We also write about ancient history, as in The Rhine Flows North, which Troy wrote about his Germanic ancestry.” An Insanguine show is loud, electrifying and heavy. Gwen likes to dance on stage, and the rest of the band are in constant motion. These days they are recording. “Our first CD is almost done,” says Troy. “We’ll be gigging relentlessly, and ultimately of course we’d love a record label contract and the opportunity to quit our jobs and tour the world.” — PETE
