I’m just

SAYIN’ {

Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.

I tailgated in Iowa City for years before I stepped foot in Kinnick Stadium itself. Almost like a rite of passage. I had to bide my time outside the gates before being allowed to one day pass through them.

So, I look for the silver lining in the football season. Tailgating, whether at home or at the stadium, is like throwing a party. Now that’s something I can get behind. I love getting friends together. And around here, there’s nothing like a football game to gather the masses. Plus, for me, the people watching while tailgating is just as entertaining as the game is for my husband.

Sure. That is a bit dramatic. But, for true football fans, I imagine that’s how they feel. I know that emotion is reflected on So. Here we go again. my husband’s face every time we enter the stadium. It never fails. We show our Fire up the grill. Chill the beer. It’s football season. Go Hawks! tickets, pass through the gates with throngs of other fans and he’s five years old again — awestruck by his I’m just sayin’, surroundings. I can tell he’s trying not to jump up and down with glee. That reaction is why I let him drag me to the games. I’ve shared in this space before that I could really care less about football. The game itself? Meh. Whatever. But still, at least once a season (more if he’s lucky) I set my alarm for an ungodly early hour on a Saturday morning, get up and don my best black and gold. Not because I care. But because he does so gosh darn much. And I’d want him to do the same for me. I’ve tried to like football. To get it. It’s monopolizing our television enough during the fall, I might as well. In a can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em way, I took a Football 101 class hosted by Z 102.9’s Schulte and Swann a couple of years ago. I try to watch the game and ask questions. But, no matter how diligently I try to listen to the answer, it only takes a few seconds before (without even realizing it) I stop listening. It’s so cliched. I wish I weren’t THAT wife. I wish I could care. But try as I might, I can’t.

ANATOMY OF A FOOTBALL FAN

On game day, you are what you wear. And in Hawkeye Country, that means, you better have a closet (and a garage and a basement) full of black and gold. Here’s five things every (true) fan should have on game day.

no.

no.

OK. So this might only apply to the college-age fans among us. But hey, if you want to channel those halcyon days, here’s how: Moisture first (Yes. Guys, you too. It’ll keep you from itching.). Start with the good stuff — makeup used by the pros so it doesn’t melt off your face before the game starts. Using your fingers and triangle makeup sponges, apply gold first. Draw a line down the middle. Follow with black. If you really want a crisp line, find a black makeup crayon to add the finishing touch.

01 GAME DAY BIBS

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, these babies are quintessentially Midwestern football. The primary manufacturer of these beauts — Game Bibs — says “Players wear uniforms. Why shouldn’t their fans?” Hmm. Now, players running for the end zone in these striped numbers? That’s something we’d like to see. For now, though, we’re guessing the only field action these bibs will get is when fans rush the field after a big win. Oh well. no.

03 FACE PAINT

no.

04 COLD WEATHER GEAR

It’s hard to remember at the beginning of the season, when the sun is shining and the sweat is pouring, but as the season progresses, game day gets downright cold. Fans who brave the chilly temps (especially for a 5 or 6 a.m. wake-up call) know bundling up is the way to go. Layers. Lots of layers. So, while a T-shirt or jersey is sufficient in September, you’ll want to stock up on gloves, scarves and hats (all in black and gold, of course). You won’t find any fairweather fans here. Snow? Bring it.

02 JERSEY

A fan is not a fan without a jersey (or five). Beyond the obvious need to have more than one (what happens if you drop queso?), a collection of jerseys is the mark of a true fan. Support your favorite player. Prove your 12th man status by sporting a jersey from the stands. The more diverse the collection, the better. Home jersey. Away jersey. Throwback jerseys. Alternate jerseys. And don’t forget the one that’s been with you from the beginning, the one that proves you’re not just a bandwagon fan.

no.

05 ALL THE EXTRAS

Cups, plates, tents, chairs, tables, games, grills, coolers, coozies. You name it. Someone, somewhere has slapped a tiger hawk on it and sold it for well beyond market value. Why? Because fans love it. It’s not a tailgate without a trunk full of Hawkeye paraphernalia. Really, does bean dip taste as good when it’s not served in a Hawkeye crock pot? We don’t think so.

TEAMING UP TO BEAT CANCER Since 2007, when Brent and Christie VanWey’s daughter Mikayla, now 6, was diagnosed with leukemia, the couple has done all they can to help their daughter fight her battle with cancer. They’ve also reached beyond their family to help support other families and children fighting childhood cancer.

“There are many ways the universities have supported this effort,” Brent VanWey says. “They really put the focus on the cancer families.”

But that’s not all. In order to raise funds for research, the group came up with the idea to sell “Beat Cancer” shirts (in the tradition of the “Beat State” rivalry garb) to fans. Hawk fans can get a black and gold “Beat Cancer” shirt, while Cyclone fans can sport crimson and gold.

Last year they started a local chapter of Flashes of Hope — a national nonprofit organization that captures photos of children fighting cancer to create powerful, uplifting portraits — and have partnered with Dance Marathon and The Heart Connection Children’s Cancer Camps to take photos of more than 400 Iowa children affected by cancer in the last two years. They also help facilitate a support group for families dealing with childhood cancer.

Even when Mikalya finished her treatments earlier this summer, the VanWeys didn’t slow down their efforts. Recently, they teamed up with four other families (all living in the Des Moines area) to make the state of Iowa—namely Iowa and Iowa State All proceeds from shirts sales go to fans—take notice of childhood cancer during National Childhood CureSearch, the leading childhood Cancer Awareness Day, September 12. cancer research organization. and to sell “Beat Cancer” shirts nationwide.

“We really didn’t know where we wanted this thing to go, but this is where it’s going on its own,” Brent says “This year is bigger than what we expected and we feel like we’re actually making a difference.”

“Perhaps then people everywhere will understand what this childhood cancer thing is all about. But right now, we are just trying to get through September, 12 (of this year),” he says.

His ultimate goal is for all college football teams playing on the second Saturday of September (designated by Congress in 2008 as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day) to have a gold ribbon on their helmet in honor of childhood cancer

Brent admits the group had no idea this effort, literally started by five families between Eastern and Central Iowa, would rally thousands of other supporters. (Their fan site on Facebook now has more than 1,600 members.) “We thought, ‘what are we gonna do if we sell 200 shirts? 500 shirts?’” VanWey says. “This thing, it absolutely exploded. We’ve just hit the tip of the iceberg.” To date, the group has sold more than 3,000 shirts (and counting.) That’s what we call showing some real team spirit.

Brats, beer and the big game.

A HAWKEYE SUPERFAN Jim Krotz, 41, Marion

e-Media Sales Director @ Meetings Media

Jim is a dedicated Hawkeye fan. He can’t carry on a conversation without it inevitably turning to Hawkeye sports. (Believe me – I’ve tried.) Here, he shares some of his Hawkeye favorites. — LEAH

Favorite Hawkeye sport?

Football. There’s nothing better than a fall day.

EcoCentric { GREEN TAILGATING

You can enjoy tailgating this fall just as you always have while reducing your party’s environmental footprint. How cool is that? A simple goal: leave nothing behind and to bring home a victory too, of course. Either way you’re guaranteed at least one win by saving resources. — JEFF

How long have you been a Hawkeye fan? Since I was born.

Favorite Hawkeye athlete? Bob Sanders

Favorite Hawkeye coach?

Kirk Ferentz. I’ve had numerous run-ins with him, and he’s a one of the classiest guys I’ve ever met. It’s unbelievable.

Favorite tailgating spot?

Right under the press box. It’s the best spot because we’re always the last stop for my buddies going to the game. The best part of tailgating is that you get to meet a bunch of people. I have a lot of friends in Des Moines who I don’t get to see very often. It’s a great way to come together, and we’re always the last stop before people go to the game.

Favorite piece of Hawkeye memorabilia? A brick from the old stadium.

What do you do when the Hawks lose?

It’s only one part of your life, but you can’t get away from it. You think about it. When you’re watching the game, it’s almost like you’re playing with the players because you’re into it so much.

All-time favorite game?

It has to be the October 2002 game at Michigan. We went in there and won 31-9. It was by far one of the best times I’ve ever had because we weren’t expecting much. We weren’t ranked, and they were No. 11. It was pretty spectacular.

Favorite food to eat while watching Hawkeye football? LEAH GARRIS IS A FULL-TIME WRITER/ EDITOR WHO FREELANCES ON THE SIDE. SHE’S STRIVING TO ACHIEVE THE PERFECT BALANCE OF WORK AND PLAY.

Utensils

Ditch the plastic forks, spoons and plates that get pitched by the thousands and take reusable utensils and containers. Or go for the compostable cutlery and dishes made out of recycled material. If you must use the plastics, consider taking them home and reusing them. ●

Cooking

When grilling out, consider using propane. It is a petroleum product, but it burns cleaner than charcoal and leaves behind no waste. If you must use charcoal, check out the new natural briquettes. For your food, consider locally grown produce and seasonal products.

Waste

I haven’t been to many tailgates where food has been wasted, but I’m told it does happen. In any event, try to bring what you can eat, and if there’s excess take it home or give it to your tailgating neighbors. Remember the goal of leaving nothing behind and leave your spot is it was before you arrived by taking any waste with you.

Drink

The hard-core greenies might consider organic or locally-brewed beers. For the mixers, encourage reusable cups. Although we don’t have space here to discuss the environmental downside of plastic water bottle products, water can be transported from home in of the many new reusable water bottles – many of which now come in your favorite teams colors and logos.

Carpool

Get a designated driver who cannot only ensure your group’s safety but also helps minimize carbon emissions, multiple parking fees and traffic.

TAILGATING 101

As any true fan will tell you, tailgating is just as essential as watching the game. When it comes time to scout out your spot, make sure you get there early, dress appropriately (in Hawkeye gear, of course), and have plenty of food and beverage with you (the last thing you want to do is run out of chow). Many tailgating addicts are still mourning the loss of the Field House and Olive Court lots, but there are plenty of other options. —LEAH

Stadium Lot (reserved)

The big-time donors tailgate here, and you’ll see lots of flat-screen TVs, big speakers, etc. It’s a small lot, but is lots of fun. Those without tickets often hang out here to watch the game on TV.

Melrose Court (general)

This is where many of the college students head (or people who want a good show). Every house on the Dental Lot (reserved) block participates in the party. Close to the stadium This lot is right next to Carver — it’s a reserved lot that is and located on a dead-end street, almost anyone can family-friendly and a bit calmer than some of your other walk up and join in on this big celebration. choices. People are welcoming and it’s easy to strike up conversations with fellow fans. Myrtle (general) A good mix of students and adults, this lot took on many tailgaters when the Olive Court lot closed. The location of this space is good, but it’s farther from Kinnick than some might like. A plus: There’s a gas station at the bottom of the hill in case you need more supplies.

Magic Bus (general)

Sports Illustrated once dubbed this the No. 1 tailgating spot in the United States. On the south side of Kinnick, the Magic Bus sits across the street from the stadium. There’s a $10 charge to get in, but the beer is free once you pay. This option fills fast, so get there early.

Finkbine (general/reserved)

WEDNESDAY: $5 Martinis NO COVER

THURSDAY: $5 Fishbowl Cocktails NO COVER

NO COVER ON FRIDAY

DRAG SHOWS EVERY SATURDAY AT 11:30PM

OPEN SUNDAY AT 9PM

This spot is pretty big, and you can find a wide variety of people here. Olive Court tailgaters were encouraged by the University of Iowa to make this their new tailgating spot last year. It’s located just a few blocks west of the stadium; the walk down Melrose Avenue from Finkbine toward Kinnick has an atmosphere that’s just as fun and energetic as the act of tailgating itself.

Before you head out for the day, make sure you have the info you need:

● Certain University of Iowa lots open at 7 p.m. on the Friday before home games. All other lots are open at 7 a.m. on game day. ● Tents/tarps are only allowed if they don’t hinder traffic or extend into an extra parking spot. ● Wood fires aren’t allowed (only gas or charcoal in approved grills). ● Saving spaces for other tailgaters isn’t allowed. ● You can’t use extra parking spaces to set up grills,

trailers, tents, chairs, etc. ● No visible kegs, hard liquor or glass bottles are permitted. For more information, go to www.hawkeyesports.

Drinks and drinking establishments worth your time and money.

Manhattan this side of the Mississippi A disclaimer: I don’t drink, at least not anymore. When I talk about drinks, it will be from memory, and when I talk about service, it will be how I’m treated when I’m ordering soda or tonic with lime. Being sober makes me more concerned about things like atmosphere, service and quality and far less concerned with how much it costs to get liquored up. Each column, I’ll start by introducing a drink unique to an area establishment and how it embodies that locale. Next, I’ll tell you why you should spend your money there. Finally, I’ll tell you where I’m writing about next, so you can skip ahead and “scoop” my column. The Manhattan is a delicious cocktail — both decidedly American and uniquely sophisticated. It is essentially a martini. Instead of gin, however, the Manhattan uses a whiskey, preferably rye. In lieu of dry, white vermouth, it employs sweetened “rosso” (or red). Finally, two dashes of aromatic bitters (a tincture of angostura bark) are added to a shaker of ice, stirred and the mixture is strained into a chilled martini glass where it is garnished with a maraschino cherry.

others serves this drink on ice in a lowball glass – inexcusable for an establishment with a 15-plus drink martini list) or completely absent from the bar (Starlite Room implausibly stocks sweet vermouth but not bitters), this cocktail is tough to find. A bar that lacks bitters is incapable of making the three most famous whiskey cocktails – the Tom Collins, the old-fashioned and the Manhattan. Essentially, their impressive whiskey collection becomes useful only with cola or served straight-up. An acceptable approximation was served at Parlor City, who now readily makes me a soda and bitters instead. I first stumbled on this place during a “nothing’s going on, it’s Wednesday in May bar crawl” after it had just opened its doors. The space was clean, and well lit. At the time, it was also nearly vacant. Unlike many other local bars, neither the bartender nor the wait-staff were rude to me. When the waitress didn’t know how to make a cocktail, she consulted the bartender and then asked me how I wanted it made. The bar is long, near the entrance and its stools are comfortable. The liquor selection is broad but not excessive. Although the karaoke grew irritating. The diverse patrons genuinely seemed to enjoy the atmosphere.

In May, I ordered this drink probably 20 times and never once received it. Whether poorly proportioned (at Zins I was served Templeton literally drowning in With high-backed booths, a quiet game room and vermouth), served incorrectly (Piano Lounge among friendly staff I still patronize this place religiously even though I don’t drink. When friends visit from out of town, I bring them here as an example of the best Cedar Rapids has to offer – unusual quality in an unlikely location. And if you order a Manhattan, make sure you let them know that you’re a patron of sophistication and taste and that the fundamentals are easy. It should have a cherry, not cherry juice, it should be made 2:1 rye to sweet vermouth and it should be served neat in a cocktail (martini) glass. Or don’t.

Attitude is everything.

Bartender @ Moose McDuffy’s

You’ve worked at the Moose for three years, what keeps you there?

Our customers are what keep me here. We have great customers, many of whom I call friends. We get a wide variety of people in here which is nice.

Sex With an Alligator (aka Sexy Alligator)

What do you love about being behind the bar?

I love meeting and talking to new people and hearing their stories — usually. The biggest challenge is keeping everyone happy when it’s busy. I try, but you can’t please everyone all the time.

The staff all seem to have a great time together — what’s the secret?

We have a great staff. I think that keeping things fun, along with helping each other out, is why we work so well together. Randy (the owner) told me from day one, “I hire you, but my bartenders decide if you stay.” That’s stayed true through today. We just have a good fit.

BOOKTALK {

Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes.

IOWA GAL PALS ARE BEST “THE GIRLS FROM AMES: A STORY OF WOMEN AND A FORTY-YEAR FRIENDSHIP,” by Jeff Zaslow, any less enjoyable.

After writing an essay for the Wall Street Journal about women’s friendship, the author received a letter from Jenny from Ames who thanked him for the article and mentioned her tight-knit group of girls from Ames, who had remained friends for nearly 40 years despite moving all over the country. Zaslow contacted Jenny and decided to chronicle the friendship of the Ames women in a book. Beginning even before the girls were born, the book spends some time illustrating the random chance involved in creating a friend group like that of the girls from Ames. Not everyone has the same 10 friends they’ve had since middle school. But while the girls were lucky, they’ve also put a lot of effort into their friendship, not something that everyone does. Zaslow includes information about the benefits friendship holds for women (It helps beat cancer! It makes you happier! It makes your marriage better!) and advocates that the effort is well worth it. The “girls,” as they call themselves, open up their personal lives, scrapbooks and class notes to Zaslow to help him understand them so he could share their story. Chronicling both their years as a middle school and high school clique and as an armor-strong adult support system, the book is mostly written chronologically. After 40 years, the friendship withstood some of the most difficult tragedies. The single requirement of the friendship, during its adult years, is to step up during these tragedies. While you’ll laugh out loud about some of their stupid high school adventures, (cars in ditches, hiding when a keg party gets interrupted by law enforcement) you’ll spend the latter half of the book crying about the things they go through as adults. From the first babies, through second husbands and fourth careers, friendships that last this long get my respect. The charm of this book is the utter ordinary-ness of the women. Not old enough to be our moms; not young enough to be our peers, these women could easily be your boss, your mentor, your former teacher. The fact that the book is written by a man is also notable. At times, it’s as if he’s a scientist and he’s uncovered a new species. Zaslow makes the point that women, between the ages of 25 and 40 have the most difficulty maintaining friendships because those years tend to be very family focused. But if you can keep your friends through those years, it’s smooth sailing after 40. So, tell your friends how much you love them and hope you can be as lucky as the girls who grew up 100 miles to the west of us. But really, read this book. — CAITLIN
