As we continue into 2015, I can say with certainty that it has definitely been a year of changes—and great ones at that. To start, look no further than our May/ June issue, which changes up our usual roster. As our team has always sought out unique experiences, we thought it was time to share the most outstanding of them with you with the debut of our latest feature, “20 Pursuits of Modern Luxury.” When we first discussed this theme, I was anxious to see what our team would find. I have to say you won’t be disappointed. Editor-in-Chief Kai Andersen, Senior Editor Jasmine Lombardi and our contributors have curated a collection of refined experiences and pastimes that may very well lead you to redefine your ideas of luxury. While many options are sure to intrigue, my personal fave is definitely throwing an intimate, jazz-themed soiree at Halekulani’s Lewers Lounge. Of course, we’ve kept different interests in mind, so I’m sure that you’ll find one that will match your personal taste. But this feature is not the only new addition we have in store for you this year. In June, we will be publishing a special edition of Modern Luxury Hawai‘i, our Insider’s Guide. We like to think of it as our personal take on the islands, replete with all of our favorite spots—from restaurants to hotels—along with much-appreciated insight from Hawai‘i’s tastemakers. It’s the perfect companion to visitors, as well as locals looking to uncover another side of the islands. As insider experiences go in Hawai‘i, there’s nothing quite like Passport to Luxury, our annual celebration of the good life during Ala Moana Center’s annual Shop a Le‘a. We hope that you were able to join us for this year’s seventh edition. (In case you weren’t able to, do check out all the fabulous pictures in Social Circles.) I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our partners at Ala Moana Center and all participating boutiques, who continue to provide us with the perfect venue for this unique event year after year. We are equally glad to share this evening with you. After all, where else could you try dishes from 16 of Hawai‘i’s leading chefs, accompanied by libations from top mixologists, all the while perusing all the gorgeous fashions and accessories from some of the world’s top luxury brands? (Now, that’s what we call a true shopping spectacular.) But what makes this night even more noteworthy is how it benefits a local cause. This year’s proceeds benefited Blue Planet Foundation and its mission to move us toward 100 percent renewable energy—something that we all should consider while we enjoy the luxury of living in Hawai‘i. On that note, we look forward to bringing you even more special finds and local wonders as the year moves ahead. Until the next time, here’s to all that’s marvelous in the islands!

When friends ask me what I love most about my job, they often think I’ll mention the obvious choices: the parties, the invite-only events and all the chic openings. While those are all certainly great perks to the job, they’re just one small part. Time and again, I can’t help but arrive at the same answer: people. I relish in hearing someone’s life story unfold as they speak. Such was the case with interior designer Reiko Lewis of Ventus Design, presidentelect of the American Society of Interior Designers-Hawai‘i Chapter. Over lunch, Lewis left me beyond impressed, and not just with her portfolio. (Check out her work on the Hotel Grande Bretagne in Greece.) Not only did she move from a career with CNN to interior design but this interdisciplinary wonder has also dedicated her life to the pursuit of beauty. In fact, one week after our first meeting, Lewis invited me to an informal Japanese tea ceremony, which brought to life its indelible philosophy of wa kei sei jaku—harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. Needless to say, it was obvious that I had to include both Lewis’ design studio and the art of tea in our new feature, “20 Pursuits of Modern Luxury,” our exclusive take on how to live the good life in the islands. Of course, I had to work in one of my favorite hideaways, Lewers Lounge, at Halekulani. Every time I go, I request Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Corcovado (Quiet Night of Quiet Stars)” from pianist Maggie Herron and saxophonist Rocky Holmes. One day, I thought: Why not throw the ultimate jazz-themed fete here? Of course, we have daytime experiences as well, such as private surf sessions with longboarding champ Kai Sallas. And for those who like to dress local, get ready to take your wardrobe to the next level by ordering a custom dress from Ari Southiphong of Andy South. (She can even cover it in Swarovski crystals if you wish.) There are certainly other stories that will catch your eye in this issue. For Style Hawai‘i “Lei Days,” we put our own spin on the islands’ legendary garland. For the authentic touch, we turned to lei maker Bill Char, who created lei specifically for the latest local looks that we have discovered. Now, that certainly redefines accessorizing. You’ll find another visual showstopper in Food Drink Spotlight “Fresh Pursuits,” where veteran photographer Linny Morris captured one of the most exquisite dishes I’ve seen recently. Under her lens, delicate oysters topped with translucent Japanese kanten and red trout roe become truly edible art. And it’s just one of the new stellar dishes on the spring menu at Chef Mavro. While we’ve covered the senses of sight, taste and smell, we’re also happy to provide inspiration for your playlists. Let us introduce you to Maui’s Embassy of Joy, whom contributor Kristin Hettermann profiles in Art & Culture Music “In the Mix.” Recently signed to one of Europe’s best dance labels, this hot duo will have you moving straight through the summer. The flight engineer for Expedition 43 and a captain in the Italian Air Force snapped this image from the International Space Station which she then promptly posted to social media, with the hashtag #HelloEarth. Cristoforetti’s unique point of view joins those from fellow crew members who have been photographing the planet from orbit for the Crew Earth Observations program. But even astronauts can be awed. After spotting Hawai‘i’s iconic volcanoes, Cristoforetti found herself erupting in happy excitement at the sighting. It’s time to take a European getaway—even if it’s just to chic Italian import Brunello Cucinelli, which just arrived at Ala Moana Center. That’s not to say the brand hasn’t long been on the radar of Honolulu’s fashion cognoscenti. After all, Neiman Marcus had initiated new devotees to the allure of soft cashmere and subtly modern forms for the past few years. For those who have not had the pleasure of slipping on a Cucinelli sweater, there is much to love. But most fascinating is founder Brunello Cucinelli’s merging of humanist philosophy with contemporary fashion—a distinctly refreshing characteristic that the owner has infused into the house since 1985. In turn, he has transformed the company’s home in Solomeo, Umbria, into a haven of commerce and culture, replete with a school and even a theater. Expect to find echoes of this aesthetic in the Honolulu outpost, which is, in fact, just the third
location to reflect the new store design after Beverly Hills and San Francisco. The clean, modern interior is punctuated by platforms and displays in warm woods, and woven rugs in earthen hues. It’s the perfect backdrop for the women’s spring/summer 2015 collection, which takes its inspiration from an array of cultures outside the Old World. Legendary island chef Roy Yamaguchi is back in business with a new restaurant. But sorry, Honolulu foodies, the toque is giving some well-deserved attention to Kaua‘i while also paying homage to the rich multiethnic cuisine of the islands. In fact, it’s not the first time that Yamaguchi has launched a new dining concept on the Garden Isle. (His first was The Tavern at Princeville, which opened over four years ago on the North Shore but was recently shuttered.) Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Korean and Filipino cuisines. Amid the festivities, all eyes were on Jeff Mikulina—and for good reason. Mikulina serves as executive director of Blue Planet Foundation, the forward-thinking, Honolulu-based nonprofit that was the evening’s beneficiary. Founded by gaming legend Henk Rogers, the organization focuses on making renewable energy a reality. Combining the finer things in life with a philanthropic spirit, the seventh year of Passport to Luxury turned out to be a true tour de force.
THE SCENE The lines to check in almost extended into the center’s Nordstrom Wing. With excitement in the air, Honolulu media personality Olena Heu—definitely hard to miss in her vibrant red frock— took the stage at the Modern Luxury lounge and gave those waiting good reason to listen. Attendees who had their Passport booklet stamped by all participating boutiques could enter the coveted final drawing. There was also an instore auction for highly soughtafter items like handbags from Fendi and Tod’s, and gift certificates to Mariposa and The Pineapple Room by Alan Wong. In a high-tech twist, Microsoft team members, equipped with tablets, helped to register bidders and take bids. Once guests were checked in, they were quickly off in all directions. THE PARTY During Ala Moana Center’s weeklong spring shopping celebration Shop a Le‘a, the word around Honolulu was that Modern Luxury Hawai‘i’s Passport to Luxury was the event of the season. Only those truly on a mission could manage to pop in every spot and keep moving. Some preferred to take their time and soak in the atmosphere, while perusing stylish items to purchase. Cole Haan got an infusion of Latin style, thanks to Waikīkī hot spot Búho Cocina y Cantina. Quite a few guests were spotted lining up for a second El Avion, the resto’s signature tequilainfused cocktail. (We don’t blame them—it was so good.) Those looking for sweet treats headed to CH Carolina Herrera for scrumptious petits-fours bites from MW Restaurant. Later in the evening, Honolulu scenesters made their way up the escalator to Emporio Armani, which was the epicenter of cool thanks to the bar team from The Modern Honolulu. DJ Anit, resident mix master at the property’s nightclub, Addiction, got the crowd going toward the end of the night. The spontaneous dance party was not to be missed. When the music faded, the revelers made their way to join a crowd of hundreds around Center Stage. As in years past, everyone anxiously awaited the final drawing and for good reason. Fourteen prizes were up for grabs, from a Bally shoulder bag to a $500 Ala Moana Center Shopping Spree gift card to the final item, a pair of round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines. Even after the final winners were announced, the party wasn’t over. In a first for the event, The Modern Honolulu threw an official afterparty in its lounge, The Study. While local ensemble Simple Souls got the group dancing, a jet-set vibe was added by a bevy of visiting Brits and Aussies. (Among them was Sydney-based public relations mogul Kim McKay and her team of Klickstars.) With the international crowd hovering about, it was almost natural to think you needed a passport to attend.

THE PEOPLE Though this soiree celebrated film, all eyes were admittedly on the fashion. (And who didn’t love the on-camera fashion review after check-in?) Greeting guests personally were Executive Director Robert Lambeth and Director Emeritus Chuck Boller, who looked especially spiff y in their tuxes. HIFF board member and socialite at large Kristen Chan exuded sophistication in her Naeem Khan dress. Hubby Dr. Michael Chan, after a black-tie event the night before, opted for a relaxed blue suit. While capturing the evening on camera, KITV’s Pamela Young brightened the room both with her smile and sequined frock. THE SCENE With pumping tunes in the background and sumptuous decor, Halekulani created a setting fit for an A-lister. (Some guests were ready to take home a Pucci-esque tablecloth.) And if a special prize had been given that evening, it would have gone to Executive Chef Vikram Garg, who produced an applauseworthy multicourse experience inspired by Oscar nominees.

As cultural symbols go, never has there been an emblem as quintessentially Hawaiian as the lei. While garlands of plants and flowers can be found elsewhere in the Pacific, the lei takes on a truly mythic status in Hawai‘i, showing up in legends, songs and expressions. And not only are there a variety of techniques—from the simple kui (stringing) to the intricate haku (three-way plaiting)—there is the meaning of the materials used. For instance, the fragrant maile vine, a sacred plant of hula, is now used for special occasions like graduations and marriages. For some, the orange-hued hala is given in remembrance or at the end of a venture. At its most refined, the garland can even subtly evoke the feeling behind an occasion, perhaps even alluding to the nature of a relationship. In all, the lei is a unique and truly ephemeral luxury, especially as the most delicate will last only a day. Against such a rich cultural tapestry, it was only fitting that the lei receive a day in its honor. In Hawai‘i in 1929, May Day officially became Lei Day. Even now, in the 21st century, seasoned lei-makers and daring amateurs continue to show off their talents in the annual Lei Day competition at Kapi‘olani Park in Waikīkī, as well as other locales throughout Hawai‘i. Fittingly, the winner of any contest, in Hawaiian, is said to take ka lei o ka lanakila, the lei of victory. A frequent recipient of that honor is Bill Char, a highly respected cultural practitioner and expert lei-maker. In fact, the Honolulu native first learned how to make lei from his mother, then later from his hula teachers. (Char now knows a total of nine techniques—two of them from the Pacific and even one from India.) Forty years later, the master is still going strong. For Modern Luxury Hawai‘i, Char specially created a host of custom lei designed to play off looks from island labels Andy South and stylish newcomer Language of the Birds. In a surprising twist, some incorporated rarely seen elements like sweetly fragrant ylang-ylang blossoms or the paperlike flowers of the kou tree, as well as more well-known ones, like the crimson lehua, roses and orchids. In all, Char deftly demonstrates that you can honor cultural traditions while staying fashion-forward—an approach to style entirely appropriate in May, given its bevy of Hawaiian cultural events. And though the expert doesn’t currently take orders from the public, he does lend his talents to some of Honolulu’s most prestigious institutions for special events, including Kamehameha Schools and Punahou School. Of course, that leaves the question of where to find the perfect lei. While simple creations can be found almost everywhere, some spots are far superior to others. On O‘ahu, many swear by the famed Cindy’s Lei Shoppe (1034 Maunakea St., Chinatown, O‘ahu, 536.6538, cindysleishoppe.com), where Hilo maile start at $40. (In case you have a special event on the mainland, Cindy’s does ship by Federal Express.) For truly unique creations on the Valley Isle, discriminating buyers turn to Kapono‘ai Moliau’s tasteful boutique Native Intelligence (1980 Main St., Ste. 2, Wailuku, Maui, 249.2421, nativeintel.com). Here, the kumu hula offers truly artisanal lei, from simple strands of fragrant pīkake (jasmine) to strands of delicate ‘ilima flower entwined with maile. Take note, however, that the selection and prices (usually from $20 to $40) depend on the time of year and other factors. Needless to say, the best lei are always those made by family and friends. In Hawai‘i, there are few luxuries simpler, or better, than that. H

The Hawaiian quilt is going transoceanic, thanks to the Bay Area’s Kapa Mua. After 20 years in the interior design scene, San Francisco resident Michael Pechinski is gaining attention for his take on the traditional, handsewn bed covering. interesting geometric interplay (the pattern on the parquet floor, a block motif over the windows providing both architecture and ventilation). But, “it would look weird for the home to be a midcentury time capsule,” says Joanne Gomez of Pacific Home (596.9338, pacific-home.com), the company which helmed the home staging. “That’s not what we wanted to do at all.” Instead, to honor the period of the house but infuse it with the Hawai‘i modern vibe, the home received just a “wink of beach,” not what Gomez calls full-fledged Tommy Bahama—an aesthetic rigorously avoided. After all, she says, “This was about creating midcentury in Hawai‘i, not in Palm Springs”—two very different feelings. To achieve Ossipoff ’s signature Hawai‘i modern look, an open-concept plan was conceived so that one space accommodates several offshoots, all visually and physically accessible. “I love that you walk in and see everything,” gushes Gomez. So does the homeowner, referring to a now brighter, airier abode than first encountered. Tempered aqua tones, woven textiles and organic textures further the warm feeling throughout. The interplay of materials—jute ottomans, sumptuous woods, chrome chairs with woven backs—proved the “perfect meld between
supermodern, which you get with your metal, your chrome, your shiny surfaces; and the islands, with that texture, that weave… all styles blend really well but still feel midcentury,” explains Gomez. But because kitchens and bathrooms don’t age well, these spaces were gutted stem to stern. All serve to create a place of true repose. “You look outside, and it’s just such a peaceful setting,” says the homeowner of her midcentury remodel, currently on the market now that she’s in the Mainland. Gomez concludes, “I think they did a wonderful job keeping all the valuable, beautiful design elements. Pio Marasco was returning to Maui, where he had mixed a career as a professional windsurfer and house-music artist. Little did they know that fortuitous connection would lead to so much more. Eight months later, Rhodes would move to the Valley Isle to start a new life with Marasco, sharing love, musical collaboration and a family. As pairings go, one couldn’t hope for a more intriguing harmony. A native of Naples, Italy, 66 MODERN LUXURY H AWAI‘I M AY/JUNE 2015
Marasco has been producing music for 15 years and has over 60 releases. The mix master has played internationally with celebrated artists Marco Carola, Derrick May, Halo, H-Foundation, Danilo Vigorito, Tony Humphries, Tuccillo and more. Rooted in acoustic sounds, Rhodes’ professional singing career started in the Caribbean. And while she began collaborating with Mick Fleetwood after meeting him 10 years ago on Maui, she has also performed alongside greats like Steven Tyler, Jonny Lang, James Hetfield and Kenny Chesney. (You can catch her in Chesney’s recent clip for “Wild Child.”) Of course, it was only a matter of time before the couple decided to create their own music together. Tired of seeing tunes being pigeonholed, the duo formed Embassy of Joy in 2012 as a way to combine different musical genres into one singular voice. The sound blends electronica with experimental and deep house. “It’s an evolution of soulful and old-school NYC house music, which also originates from disco—with a touch of electronica,” says Marasco. “The point is to intertwine different flavors for an elevated auditory feel, using synthesizers, drum machines and sound processors to convert real sounds into a live act.” Of course, the Valley Isle is a long haul from the usual bastions of electronic music like London, New York, Berlin and Ibiza. But that isn’t without artistic benefits. “On Maui, Gretchen and I detach ourselves completely from reality and concentrate on creativity,” says Marasco. “We live outdoors. Birds chirping or the whistle of the wind through the bamboo forest come into the studio and create a beat.” Perhaps that’s why there’s a subtle yet distinctly Maui vibe on Embassy’s latest single, “Addiction,” released on Endless Worldwide, a Barcelona-based label run by Luca Bacchetti, one of the most well-known artists in the electronica world. Heralding the debut was a sleek video directed by Italian videographer Alberto Guglielmi. Immediately receiving great accolades, the track hit the top 10 Beatport and iTunes charts and was in the top 10 most-played tracks in the BPM Festival in Playa del Carmen, on the Caribbean side of Mexico— one of the largest and hippest electronic music festivals in the world. This summer, Embassy of Joy heads to Europe, hitting various venues around Italy in May and June. One of the longest running fetes of its kind in the country, Kapalua Wine & Food Festival returns to the posh West Maui enclave for four days of top vintages, first-class food and insider tips June 11-14. Serious oenophiles will definitely want to sign up for the coveted winemaker seminars. (Trust us, there is nothing else of this caliber in the islands.) A festival first is Great Wines Made by Amazing Women seminar (June 12), proving wine is no longer a male domain. And fans of big, bold vintages will want to attend America’s Great Grape Variety on zinfandel (June 13) and the Elusive and Exclusive on Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon (June 14). Of course, you don’t need to be a seasoned expert to get the most of the festival. Foodies will definitely want to attend this year’s top-notch cooking demonstrations, featuring two nationally known celebrichefs, Charlie Palmer and Michael Mina. And if you manage to make it to the end of the festival standing, be sure to attend the closing Seafood Festival on the grounds of The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. As the go-to retreat for the frenzied, harried, hypertense and otherwise overworked of the jet-set crowd, Chiva-Som (said to mean “haven of life”), one of Asia’s first destination health spas, remains among the world’s best places to find tranquility and renewal. Located on the beach in Hua Hin, Thailand (a popular seaside retreat with Thai royalty), the resort spreads out over seven acres of lush tropical beauty, replete with lakes and waterfalls that set the stage for the soothing and expansive menu of Eastern and Western spa, alternative and medical treatments offered. A rotating roster of visiting consultants—international practitioners in myriad disciplines—join Chiva-Som’s highly qualified staff, who outnumber guests 4-to-1 to ensure every guest is on a personal path to health and wellness by the end of their stay. After months of crazy schedules, decompressing for five days seems nearly impossible to my brother and me. Yet, we find ourselves en route to Chiva-Som. Landing at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, we collect our bags (pack light—there’s no need to dress up at Chiva-Som, and cotton Thai pajamas for meditation, massage and the like are provided) and board a Mercedes-Benz for the 2½-hour ride to the spa resort, which, by the way, is a no-children zone. Upon arrival, we are escorted straight to our room and head right to bed in hopes of making a quick adjustment to the time-zone change. Morning brings vinyasa flow class in Chiva-Som’s openair yoga pavilion overlooking the water. But breakfast in the Emerald Room—one of two dining outposts on-property— really starts our day off right. In true Thai hospitality style, there’s a buffet of fruits, cereals, muffins and breads, plus menu selections including seafood dumplings and a vegetable omelet. The coffee is outstanding, and the coconut water and various juices are refreshing. Like the international spa cuisine, the views from the Emerald Room out to the pool, beach and Gulf of Thailand are wonderful. The second dining option, Taste of Siam, specializes in authentic Thai spa cuisine, and both venues feature superfresh seafood, grass-fed beef and lamb, and organic chicken and produce, along with local herbs and spices. In addition, both award-winning restaurants have daily changing

menus. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are readily available, and the presence of dairy, wheat or nuts in dishes is always noted. To ensure that healthy eating continues after guests leave Chiva-Som, cooking classes are offered to teach you how to prepare the same lowfat, low-calorie resort dishes at home. The resort has also published a new cookbook, Cooking With Light ($131, chivasomproducts.com), which features health-conscious recipes with nutritional information by the resort’s executive chef, Paisarn Cheewinsiriwat. Guests stay for a minimum of three days, and 11 different packages allow serenity seekers to select a very specific menu of spa services, classes and wellness treatments that best meet their needs. Fifty-eight accommodations include 33 Ocean rooms in the centrally located main tower, with private balconies overlooking the pool and beach; eight luxury suites, all with butler service; and 17 Thai pavilions along winding pathways, landscaped gardens, reflective pools and bridges that offer added privacy and space—their authentic architectural details are an immediate draw. Traditional and minimalist Thai decor—hardwood floors, large windows filtering in beams of natural light and a separate shower and bath—enhance the calm within these Zen-like quarters. Sets of three pavilions form a compound, sharing a terrace and outdoor sitting area. Not far away are the gym, indoor pool, dance and Pilates studios, open-air pavilions, restaurants, treatment rooms and beach. After just one day, we feel relaxed and don’t miss the 24/7 connectivity at all. One thing I’ve learned after frequenting many destination health spas: If you want to get the most from your stay, ditch the cell and stay

The literally hundreds of services offered by Chiva-Som fall loosely into categories, like fitness training (Pilates, aqua therapy, golf biomechanics, sea kayaking, tai chi and power yoga), spa therapies (head-to-toe treatments for relaxation and detoxification), and alternative therapies (ayurveda, naturopathy, physiotherapy, traditional Chinese medicine, sacred crystal healing, blood analysis, colonic hydrotherapy and iridology analysis). Adding to the experience is the Niranlada Medi-Spa, a high-tech facility offering the latest innovations in aesthetic medicine—laser skin rejuvenation and surface refining, Botox, anti-aging treatments and microinvasive cosmetic treatments such as lipolysis (ultrasonic liposuction). For me, the journey begins in earnest with an unintimidating wellness consultation to set objectives and tailor the program to my personal goal—to find tranquility that will offset the frenzy of my daily life. My brother’s focus is similar: meditation, breathing exercises and relaxation. Rather than a rev-up, our trip is a reboot. As such, we choose not to follow a preset daily agenda. Rather than packing the days with nonstop activities, I pencil in plenty of quiet time. Both of us look forward to experiencing new treatments. My first is a 90-minute hypnotherapy session. I’m skeptical, I admit, but a session with Mark W. Beale, C.Ht, who maintains a private practice in Bangkok and specializes in corporate training and executive coaching, piques my interest. Beale employs deepfocused relaxation to teach strategies for peak performance in a variety of areas, including stress management and weight loss. While it’s hard to relinquish control, I do feel a benefit afterward. Then, after a delicious traditional papaya salad, tom yum soup and pad Thai, plus a poolside break, my trip is better focused by a physical analysis to define my current fitness state and access my fitness goals. The best part of the day is my retreat to the relaxation area

with water and heat therapy. Never overcrowded, the space features exceedingly comfortable water-bed lounges that lull me into a state of peaceful euphoria (an infrared sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool and Jacuzzi do the same). After indulging for about an hour, I submit to another 80 minutes of bliss—a tension-relieving Thai massage to stretch and soothe my muscles is exactly what I need. Then, instead of walking, I seem to float to the beach restaurant, where I meet my brother for more healthful feasting—in this case, a dousing of coconut water and dinner of Massaman curry with chicken and baked marinated sea bass with turmeric. Not a cellphone in sight, just the soothing sound of water hitting the shore and a calm recounting of the day. The next day, after reading about Swiss-born Pascal Veraguth, a resident specialist at Chiva-Som in Oriental and Occidental healing known for his holistic approach, I elect to try an alternative therapy session. Although I start with acupuncture, I return for cupping and a combination of other spiritual healing techniques Veraguth tailors to my needs over the next couple of days. A true healer, he teaches me techniques to use and follows up with videos by email so I can continue these healing practices at home (a majority of the resort’s consultants and staff do the same). My visits with him bring about a renewed sense of balance and peace. Also effective is the tension-centered Fast Track Back Release treatment. While not relaxing per se, the service targets and remedies aches in the back and hip areas. Later, in my pranayama session, I learn various yogic breathing techniques to sedate my mind and ease my body. The day’s agenda also includes a signature massage and ends with a lovely dinner of soft-shell crab wrapped in nori seaweed and seared sesame tuna with creamy wasabi, followed by steamed grouper fillet served with daikon confit and mashed grilled eggplant, and hanger beef steak with king oyster mushroom and mashed carrot. Although portions seem small at first, our appetites adjusted in mere days, and we feel more than satisfied. (Double portions or multiple dishes are available upon request.) The next day begins with an intriguing naturopathic consultation focused on nutrition and natural remedies to prevent or treat existing ailments (thankfully I didn’t have many); continues with iridology analysis, which examines iris structure and pigmentation with the same goals; and culminates in another massage. And, as the results of my medispa facial analysis and skin consultation show little damage, I opt out of the fine-line-minimizing treatment in favor of the sacred crystal chakra balancing and foot massage treatment. Continuing my series of unique services is therapist Pat Thummanond’s 80-minute Core Synthesis treatment. Bent on internal balance, this process uses craniosacral therapy to calm the nervous system, visceral balancing to diff use emotions trapped in organs and lymphatic drainage to detoxify. The treatment, which transports me to a different dimension entirely, allows the body to heal. The beach, just steps away, does this too, with its taste of local culture and unbeatable sunrises. After spending five days of self-discovery at Chiva-Som, I recommend future guests stay just as long, or even longer. It is, true to its name, a haven—a place to appreciate the importance of a deep breath and living in the moment. If you’re open to the experience, Chiva-Som can be life-changing. Fresh Pursuits
An eclectic globe-trekking adventure awaits on the new spring menu at Chef Mavro, which just celebrated its 2015 AAA Five Diamond Award. After a truffle-rich winter menu, chef George Mavrothalassitis truly lightens things up. Available through June 14, the feast starts with the most delicately poached oysters, topped with translucent Japanese kanten and Sriracha-spiked trout roe. Another star item is one of the most vibrant veggie dishes we’ve ever seen, the Méli-Mélo—an artful tableau of local sea asparagus, heart of palm and radish jazzed up by Mavrothalassitis’ sauce verte, an herbal throwback from his days back in Provence. BACK TO THE ROOTS AFTER AN ABSENCE FROM THE CUISINE SCENE, THE BANYAN TREE RE-EMERGES AS ONE OF MAUI’S GASTRONOMIC HAVENS. By Eliza Escaño-Vasquez | Photography by Nina Kuna
Maui is thick with forwardthinking chefs who regard organic sustainabilit y, advance techniques and sharp plating as a standard rather than a high selling point, and as it should be. True to this philosophy, The Banyan Tree’s welcome return to West Maui reels in palates with a predisposition for down-to-earth cuisine and garden-driven mixology. Executive Sous Chef Kenneth Sniffen
designed the new menu for the idyllic venue at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. A brand veteran, the Maui-raised chef was part of the restaurant’s original opening team. While his work at the luxury brand spans from Aruba to London, Sniffen has most recently trained under the mentorship of famed chef Dean Fearing in Dallas. During my visit, we are in the capable hands of Sous Chef Jonathan Haynes, who helms the kitchen on a daily basis. The toque moved to Maui from New York five years ago, fresh from culinary school, to join The Ritz-Carlton, and effectively cooked his way up the ranks. Luscious cocktails are eloquently expounded like mini-reviews at the back of the menu, with the herbal components handpicked on hotel grounds. My first choice—A Sage Request, w h ic h m a r r ie s mudd le d blueberries, lemon and housemade honey with sage-infused Cazadores Reposado tequila, poured on a pepper-rimmed martini glass. Who’s There Discriminating Maui diners in search of refined yet unfussy food Where to Sit Reserve a table next to the window. Plan to arrive before sunset so you can catch the superb view of Honokahua Bay. What to Eat For a colorful starter, do try the pickled beets and candied granola. As entrees go, the fish dishes please, especially the highly aromatic bouillabaisse. What to Drink The wine list tempts, but the farm-to-glass cocktails are worth trying.

Bombay Sapphire gin, aromatic lavender tea and egg whites; while the creamy Mo‘o is a vibrant spin on a colada with Bacardi light rum, coconut, lime juice and fresh mint. Thoughtful details pop throughout the menu. Beet-pickled eggs turn a lovely fuchsia and elevate a beet salad with local greens. Additional flavor comes from savory granola sprinkled on Surfing Goat Dairy cheese blended with avocado and lime juice. Punchy onaga ceviche with shredded young coconut is marinated in calamansi and guajillo chile, swathed in shiso and tempered with crispy tempura Ha‘ikū avocado. This delicate, insanely delicious bite rests on a boat of purple Moloka‘i potato chips. Wonderful kabocha bisque abounds with notes of vanilla and lemongrass, garnished with gingerbread crumble. Supple and sprightly, octopus is glazed in annatto seeds; marinated in citrus zest, spices and coriander; then charred before laying on a swipe of garden kale macadamia nut pesto and whipped Surfing Goat Dairy cheese. The restaurant’s rebirth takes a departure from the modernist techniques of past Chefs de Cuisine Anthony Sholtmeyer and Jojo Vasquez, and a timely return to a more straightforward, less avant-garde comfort cuisine. What stays intact is the reverence for locality, standout flavors and elegant presentations. The stunning views—if you get there before sundown—and romantic ambience don’t hurt either. Superb culinary offerings are matched by
impeccable service. Lead by manager Craig Kahila, the seasoned front-of-house team is often praised by name in customer reviews. Among the members, Nick Noghaba and Robert Mora, who exude warmth and fine-dining sensibility, have been with the restaurant longer than any of its chefs. The position is also a homecoming for Kahila as he returns to the luxury resort after high-profile management gigs at Morimoto Waikiki; Terranea Resort at Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.; and Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa on O‘ahu. For our mains, Haynes balances a surf and turf tasting of seared ‘ōpakapaka with red curry sauce on coconut basmati rice along with tender braised short ribs on brown-buttered kabocha puree, and Ha‘ikū mizuna with crisp Asian pear. The pappardelle coated with pesto beckons with house-cured bacon, pecorino and deep-fried poached egg. For the seafood bouillabaisse of scallop, prawn, onaga and tako, an aromatic lemongrasslobster broth is poured tableside from a French press. Time for a sugar spike? Pastry Chef Rafuquee Hameed will have you go out in a blaze with a flambéed vanilla creme brulee, or trust the bar to dream up a fitting nightcap. H

Talk about lighting up the marquee! Honolulu Theatre for Youth got headline support for its 61st season’s fundraiser Actors & Artist Fund: Act V at historic Tenney Theatre. Bringing star appeal were LOST alums Daniel Dae Kim, Henry Ian Cusick and Jorge Garcia, along with young talent Celia Kenney, who joined Annie Cusick Wood (Cusick’s wife and company supporter) and the HTY ensemble to present excerpts from the season’s plays. Needless to stay, the performance inspired the lucky attendees. The evening’s raffle—which included a hot staycation at Halekulani—raised $17,000 for this celebrated beacon of children’s theater. –Kai Andersen

SEA AND BE SEEN Lovers of the ocean’s greatest creatures flocked to West Maui for this year’s edition of Whale Tales, Whale Trust Maui’s one-of-a-kind, IQ-raising event that fused education and research with a healthful dose of tasteful socializing. While an impressive roster of speakers enlightened the audience at The Maui Theatre, select VIPs headed up to Gunars and JoRene Valkirs’ home in the hills of Kapalua. While enjoying wines from the hosts’ cellar and chef Jeff Scheer’s sumptuous bites, guests were fittingly treated to gorgeous vistas with whales breaching in the distance. Of course, a marine adventure was in order too. So, leave it to the crew of Trilogy to take out select supporters for a perfect Maui sunset whale watch. –KA

From what could be heard pumping through the entryway, it probably sounded like the most rocking night at the Waikiki Parc Hotel in 2015 to date. The throngs of stylish young urbanites and dressed-up wave riders sipping on coconut waterinfused cocktails weren’t a surprise given it was a launch party for Zak Noyle, Hawai‘i’s top surf photographer. (His adrenaline-pumping shots have graced the cover of Surfer and other wave-riding mags.) To mark the occasion, the evening featured the unveiling of a pop-up shop and gallery showing off Noyle’s most impressive shots. –Jasmine Lombardi

FLAPPER FEVER While Turtle Bay Resort on O‘ahu’s North Shore is itself spectacular at sunset, the property took on a whole new allure for the Roaring Twenties, an exclusive private fete thrown by ProService Hawaii. Special touches lent a touch of The Great Gatsby to the evening, but nothing quite made a statement like the 1979 Clénet Coachworks roadster, which took center stage on the lawn. (In fact, the car was 166th out of a run of 250.) Needless to say, the luxurious ride served as the backdrop for quite a few selfies that evening. It goes without mentioning that the vintage cocktails fueled the night ahead, which included dinner followed by a dance party. And trust us—the flappers from the ’20s would not have been able to keep up with this crew. –KA

Star developers Patrick Kobayashi and Ian MacNaughton share more than just a history of collaborating on some of the islands’ poshest properties. (Think the tony Hokua in Kaka‘ako.) What they both have in common is a deeply personal commitment to family and clientele. After all, these island sons now carry forward the legacy of two leading kama‘āina residential developers. “We have the luxury of having multiple generations involved in the business,” says Kobayashi, president and CEO of the Kobayashi Group. Likewise, both successfully balance commitment to tradition with forwardthinking vision. “We like to honor the past and the traditions of Hawai‘i while continuing to innovate with the expertise that the market is now demanding,” says MacNaughton, managing partner of The MacNaughton Group. With that kind of philosophy in their DNA, they have brought island culture and luxury together like no one else. Nowhere is their approach more visible than on their companies’ latest joint project, Park Lane Ala Moana—now under construction on the coveted corner in front of Ala Moana Center’s new wing. While its contemporary design and planned five-star level concierge services are getting attention, there are definitely other noteworthy elements to expect. In fact, MacNaughton points to a far subtler but equally valuable quality. “It’s the human touch that really makes our buildings special,” he says. Both Kobayashi and MacNaughton pay attention to the smallest of details, from the building’s service books to the selection of staff and even locally created art. And that doesn’t even cover their community involvement. MacNaughton is actively involved with the GIFT Foundation, while Kobayashi is an avid supporter of the local Red Cross. “We’re proud that Hawai‘i is really one of its strongest chapters in this part of the world,” he says. Now, that’s what we call putting home first.
