CERAMICS

Here at the HCA, ceramic students have the opportunity to get their hands muddy while creating everyday useful objects such as mugs, bowls, serving dishes, containers and other vessels as well as exploring the sculptural aspects of the medium. Directed by Hana Reilly, the ceramics studio welcomes students of all backgrounds and abilities. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and supportive community where individuality and life-long friendships thrive.

Our ceramics studio has ample space and equipment for students to explore their own visions while being inspired by both their instructors and fellow students. The studio is equipped with nine wheels, hand building tables, a slab roller, an extruder, two kilns, 16 glazes, slips, under-glazes, oxides and a plethora of hand-building and surface design tools.

The Wheel Experience

Ages 18+

Come and learn the basics of making pottery on the potter’s wheel! The workshop includes all materials, firing and glazing. This class is perfect for beginners and intermediate ceramics students.

Beginner/Intermediate Adults

Ages 18+

Beginning students will learn basic ceramic techniques. Students initial focus will be on basic wheel-throwing skills such as wedging clay, centering, forming vessels, and glazing. Later in the session students will be introduced to hand-building techniques and can then choose to work on individual wheelthrown or hand-built projects. Intermediate students will focus on making more complex forms, glazing techniques and other surface decoration.

Students in this class will learn more advanced forms as well as hone in on their own individual styles. Form alteration and complex surface decorating techniques will be explored together with the instructor. Students who join this class should have prior experience in ceramics.

Adult Handbuilding

Ages 18+

Beginners will learn basic hand-building skills such as slab, coil, and pinch pots, and all students will refine technique, surface treatment, and finishing options. More advanced students will dig into their own personal style by exploring more complex forms. Class discussions and critiques of fired works will allow students to better explore these individual styles.
