Hope For Youth 2017 Annual Report

Dear Friends.

Build. Mission Hope For Youth builds and maintains long-term Christian mentoring relationships with urban youth to challenge and enable them to reach their full potential spiritually, academically, and socially.

Youth

We target at-risk youth in grades six through 12 from the greater Houston area. We seek to be a point of consistency in their transiet lives. Many of our youth come from the Star of Hope homeless ministries, we proactively maintain relationships with them regardless of where they may move throughout Houston.

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I am excited to share with you what’s been going on with Hope for Youth. In 2017 the ministry hired Sonceri Jones, one of our long-term youth who went to Prairie View A&M University to our staff full-time. Our ministry also lost a faithful board member Douglas Roberts who will be missed but we are excited about his future. Due to our dedicated staff, volunteers, and board of directors the ministry reached a substantial number of youth by presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We were able to hold our second Jesus in The Hood or 2017 in the Acres Homes Area of town. Beginning in 2018, a Youth Council comprised of a select group from our mentorship program will learn to be leaders amongst their peers. The ministry also started a curriculum to focus on Disciple paths for students. Last year we moved our ministry to the Cornerstone Community through the Star of Hope Mission. At this location by God’s grace we have an awesome opportunity to grow with another ministry (New Hope Housing) who will be housing 185 families who need to hear the Gospel. I look forward to our ministry being able to help numerous families with mentorship for their kids. Please be praying for Hope for Youth in 2018 along with the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers to continue our commitment to make “Every Child complete in Christ”. Stay encouraged as we follow Christ in 2018

Mentorship. The core of HFY’s programming is where we see the most positive changes in attitude, motivation, and behavior. This group dove deep into their faith, became leaders among their peers and grew close to a positve role model who mentored them. Mentorship groups consist of 2 mentors and 3-5 youth who gather on a bi-weekly basis to discuss faith, life lessons and any challenges at home and school they may be facing.

College and Career Prep. CCP students had the opportunity to practice mock interviews preparing for their first job. They also completed a formal resume and portfolio of work to show potential employeers and colleges. We discussed different types of colleges, how to apply and be accepted. The program finishes with a panel of college students and professionals to answer real world questions.

Results.

Friday night live. FNL continued to meet twice per month with a focused curriculum topic on the first Friday and a current event topic on the third. We met dozens of new youth at this event, played games, danced, praised God, and even got covered in shaving cream. This high energy staple event provides a first step for many youth into a church environment.

Camps and Retreats.

For many students our camps and retreats experience is the highlight of their year. A total of 75 youth attended three camps last year where they heard a dynamic gospel presentation, met new Christian friends from their hometown and formed deep relationships with committed volunteers. They also got the chance to leave stressful homes and just be a kid for a week. This is the first time for many to leave Houston.

Jesus N the ‘Hood. Hope For Youth is best known for our VBS-style camp with an urban twist called Jesus N the ‘Hood. This is the one time each summer where students are discipled consecutively for five nights in a row. Recently we hosted two JNTH’s and explored Ephesians 6:10-18 including the Armor of God. High energy games, dance-offs, concerts, scripture memorization, and in-depth small group discussion make this camp so worthwile and effective.

hen I was 24 years old, I I had two, married parents and going joined a Bible study started to college was something I knew I’d do by a colleague at my office. since I was young. I had all my material I had recently become a Christian and needs met. I never worried about my didn’t know what to do next. I was invited safety. We were so different. I had no to volunteer with HFY at an event where idea what it was like to grow up in a their church was participating. I trusted God mom work 3 jobs to take again on my own. to make me valuable care of me and my siblings.” to the organization Each time I went, and to give me a I felt nervous that purpose in His plan I wouldn’t be able to offer the kids for the kids. anything or know what I was doing. I I participated in Jesus N the Hood and was a new Christian and had so much Friday Night get-togethers. I ran a small junk still in my life; who was I to be an group with the most amazing girls who example to kids? Not to mention, I was I picked up from their homes so they from a middle class, suburban family. could make it to HFY events.

I went swimming with the kids and had beach days in Galveston. I helped kids with their homework, played games, chaperoned Christian rap concerts and helped set up and clean up at events. I lived out in Richmond, TX, at the time. I often drove the 40 mile drive home crying because of the stories my girls would share in small group. I didn’t understand how God could let these girls bear the things they had been through. I would pray and ask Him, Why, Lord? Then He would say, “Be still and know that I am God...Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart and lean NOT on your own understanding.” And I rested, knowing that He loved those girls and all of the kids he brought to HFY. He gave them HFY as a refuge to know Him, to feel His love, to learn something they didn’t know. And He brought me and all of the volunteers there to be his hands and heart. One night, one of the girls I gave a ride to from her foster home, shared her story of abuse that hit me so hard, I decided, “I have to do something that will make me more prepared to help these girls.” It wasn’t instant, but that was the night that God put it on my heart that I WOULD do something different, and He would show me how. I ended up leaving HFY because of my work schedule. But, God directed me

later to quit my corporate job and go to graduate school to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. He equipped me to understand how to give hope and encouragement to those for whom it seems lost. He has given me a great gift of insight so that I can see what is really going on in marriages, families and individual’s lives so that I can intervene on God’s behalf, allowing Him to help them through me. I trust that He brings me the clients who need me and the word He has to give them in our time together. I know all of this started when He was teaching me to do these things while I was at HFY. I was just a willing child of God, saying, “Father, I can’t do this. But, You can! So show me.” God gave HFY to the kids of Houston so that they might see His love through the volunteers who step up in all of their anxiety and inadequacy and give their time and love, knowing that God will show them how to do it. It is intimidating to do something new, especially when you don’t know how. But, the value for those you serve and the growth you receive from God in those moments...unparalleled!

Hope For Youth would not exist without volunteers like Amy. They are the dedicated mentors, drivers and Bible study leaders who courageously point our students to Christ.
