cross an ocean,

If you’re going to pick a world-class education, in a perfect city HOLLAND

MICHIGAN

Not just any American education Every year, a half million students from all over the world come to U.S. colleges and universities*. They come seeking a world-class education and a true American experience. Many enroll in large schools with names they’ve heard in the news. Many choose smaller schools with better long-term results and higher rates of acceptance into graduate programs. If you’re hoping to find the combination of top academics, a university culture that challenges your thinking about all kinds of things, a beautiful campus, and tons of activities in one of the midwest’s most successful small cities, you’re in luck. And if you’re willing to come and share your culture, beliefs and traditions with us, we’re in luck. Whether you call it college or university, it’s all about the same things: Great academics. Great experience. Great results. * While many international students talk about going to Univesity, in America the first four years of higher education is referred to as College. Traditionally, the term University has referred to schools that specialize in post graduate (post college) education.

Top College When it comes to producing future Ph.D. holders, Hope College ranks in the top 5% of liberal arts colleges in the U.S. It ranks in the top 4% for science, and in the top 1% for chemistry. Hope is the only liberal arts college in the nation to achieve national accreditation in art, dance, music, and theatre. Our “Phi Beta Kappa” status puts us among the academically elite schools of America*. Publications like U.S. News and World Report, The Kaplan/ Newsweek College Catalog, and The Fiske Guide to College all agree. This is one of America’s great schools whose graduates go on to great futures. *Only 7% of all U.S. institutions have this distinction.

Perfect City We have one of the most beautiful campuses you’ll find. But when you come here, you’re not just coming to a campus. You’re coming to a city with a multiple award-winning downtown in a city Forbes Magazine calls one of the top five safest cities in the U.S. Hope is in a great city with a lively downtown, a beautiful beach, and is positioned nicely for day trips to other larger cities, including Chicago, Detroit and Grand Rapids.

Serious Students International students who choose Hope College take their studies seriously, and they appreciate that their fellow students share this commitment to academic excellence. They are here to succeed and to make their families proud. So it’s important they are surrounded by students with the same goals and aspirations—serious students helping each other become the very best they can be!

Holland, U.S.A. Connected to Hope’s one-ofa-kind campus, we have one of the most vital downtowns in the country. Summer-time concerts and street performers, year-round events, and lots of great hangouts including a variety of stores, coffee shops and restaurants. ALL AMERICA CITY

World-Class Education We’ve mentioned we’re a top college; we’ve given a few statistics. Consider these publications that have selected Hope out of thousands of colleges and universities in the U.S. In his book “Colleges That Change Lives,” education expert Loren Pope names Hope as one of the colleges that “outdoes the Ivies and research universities in producing winners.” U.S. News & World Report lists Hope among the “top liberal arts colleges in the nation.” The Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalog calls Hope a “hidden treasure.” The Fiske Guide to Colleges lists Hope among the “best and most interesting institutions in the nation.” Hope is one of ten colleges listed in the book “Putting Students First: How Colleges Develop Students Purposefully.” It’s incredible how much Hope College wants you to succeed. A professor created a new class just for me after I approached him with an idea of doing research in

linguistics. It was one of the most satisfying learning experiences I’ve ever had. Marina Kovalyuk, Russia

Hope offers a great academic program. As great as the Ivy Leagues and other “big name” schools. George Khoury, Palestine

Want More Proof ? If the statistics give any clues, you’ll be very glad you chose Hope. When you graduate you will move on to your next challenge with the confidence that comes with graduating from a school with a reputation that opens doors. Consider these stats: • 88% are admitted to medical school with a GPA of 3.4 or greater • 94% are admitted to dental school with a GPA of 3.2 or greater • 100% passing rate on state nursing exam • Graduates are regularly accepted into some of the nation’s most prestigious graduate programs, including University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Notre Dame, Princeton and University of Michigan, just to name a few • 90% admitted to law school, including Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, Duke and many others • CPA pass rates well above the national average • Teacher education program tied for first in the State of Michigan • Top 25 small colleges (nationally) for producing Peace Corp volunteers

The research opportunities at Hope gave me important advantages. I obtained insight about graduate level research and the presentation of scholarly material. As a result, I

always felt prepared in academic circles. Muturi Muriuki, Kenya, Hope Alum ’97, University of Pittsburgh’04, PhD in Mechanical Engineering

Studying music at Hope has been rewarding. Aside from an excellent violin teacher, I performed both in and outside of the Holland area. This provided me with both the motivation to practice and the experience of performing. Alexandru Hamzea, Romania

World-Class Professors Hope College faculty rank fourth nationally among all liberal arts institutions for the number of faculty research publications and 14th overall for highest impact of those publications as measured by the Science Citation Index. There is a lot that goes into building a reputation for the highest caliber of professors in the nation. At Hope, we publish, do research, and contribute to our respective fields, but never at the expense of your education. You deserve a professor who knows you, your strengths and areas of struggle. When you come to Hope you are known, cared about, and given the time you need to reach your full potential. This is a key reason professors choose to teach at Hope and a key reason our students do so well during and after the time they spend here.

The professors know what they’re teaching and get involved with their students. They ask how I’m doing and are very interested in whether I’m learning. Sunkyo Hong, South Korea/Tanzania

The participation of international students has been enormous. Wonderful things happen when a learning community includes people from around the world. Professor Joel Toppen, Political Science

Liberal Arts? What exactly is it? It’s an education for a modern world. Today’s marketplace is about ideas, the ability to express them and solutions that come from thinking minds. When you leave Hope College, you’ll have a broader base of knowledge and a more flexible way of thinking than you’ll get at any skills-only or major-only college.

Voluntary and Packed At Hope College, chapel attendance is voluntary. Nobody forces you to sign a creed or agree to a theology. What’s unique about Hope is that at chapel, it’s hard to find a seat. Hope is full of students who are serious about their faith, and joyful about its expression. Respected and Challenged. Hope is a Christian college committed to nurturing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. We want to be a place where the Christian faith is seen as inviting, not imposing. We are a community where the personal convictions and faith backgrounds of each student are respected—where students are encouraged and supported to wrestle with the tough questions about faith and life. Hope’s Christian character is clearly evident, but students feel comfortable choosing the extent of their involvement in the religious life of the college. Students at Hope come from Christian and non-Christian backgrounds. Each brings a perspective that is respected and valued.

Hope is a Christian school. I grew up in a Hindu family so it was very different. I got to learn about what other people believe and how openly they shared their beliefs. I learned to appreciate the differences. Vidhan Rana, Nepal

I was looking for a place that would educate me both spiritually and academically. Hope met that standard. Studying at Hope gave me opportunities to grow my faith in endless ways. Eduardo Ramirez, Mexico
