Fab Lab 2020 Learning From Nature:Biomimetics
With the affordability of CNC machine tools, manufacturing once dominated by large companies has become accessible to individuals, leading to changes in architectural design methods.
Over the past three years, students have used assembly-type 3D printers and laser cutters, embracing the Fab Lab ethos of learning-by-doing. This year, in addition to these tools, aspiring engineers gained hands-on experience with CNC routers, 3D scanning, UAVs, and HMDs. Inspired by the idea that "mother nature is the ultimate engineer," they integrated natural shapes into their projects through nature observation, leveraging the school's location.
Unlike previous years, where students focused on building scale models and product prototypes, this year’s cohort constructed a full-scale straw shelter, exploring practical applications while considering environmental issues such as plastic waste.
