From the Coordinator I have had the great fortune
of living a life involved in, and surrounded by the arts — music, dance, writing, and theater. For me, participation in the arts offers a sense of accomplishment, a method of relaxation, and an avenue to fun! Research also indicates that involvement in the arts increases overall health, reduces stress, develops social bonds, and provides us with experiences that create a rich life and contribute to a dynamic community. Hopkins is committed to the arts. We have a vibrant arts center in our community, and thriving arts programs in our schools. In Community Education, we strive to continually offer you opportunities to experience the arts first-hand. In his book, Guitar Zero, Gary Marcus explains his mid-life journey that started with viewing himself as lacking any capacity for musical talent. With passion and perseverance, he now enjoys the distinct benefits of being a skilled guitar player. His message is that contrary to conventional wisdom, learning music, or visual art, or dance, or writing can be achieved even if we try these things for the first time as adults. If you have never picked up a paintbrush, a guitar pick, or a creative writing pen, but have always longed to do so, or if you have honed your artistic skills for a lifetime, you will find a quality experience for you here. Each section of our catalog offers opportunities for artful living — from music to dance to creating a special meal or developing a business plan — there are many ways to infuse a bit of art into your daily life! I recently joined the Community Education team, stepping into the big shoes of now retired Coordinator, Betsy Hedding. I have been busy leveraging the art of relationship-building — getting to know the community, the school district, and you! I am committed to continuing the tradition of excellent programming and wellrounded opportunities in the years ahead, and look forward to your partnership in that effort. Community Education is for you! Join us this fall — further develop your existing talent or try something you never thought possible. You’ll be glad you did!

Writers' Workshop Series, continued from back page the recent trend of self-publishing. Her Writer's Workshops offer support, strategies, motivation, and essential knowledge for those wanting to be writers. Writing while raising children Carrie Atkins had always wanted to write — so, when her youngest child started kindergarten, she started writing non-stop. After finishing her first book, she began the process of contacting literary agents, and received more than 30 rejections in six months. Her husband noticed the Writers’ Workshops in the Hopkins Community Education catalog, and signed her up. “Writers' Workshop changed everything for me,” said Atkins. “Char is a great teacher and a wonderful cheerleader. I was introduced to the concept of self-publishing, and I met other writers who provided inspiration.” You can find two of Atkins’ books on Amazon, and she is currently working on a third as a part of a trilogy for teens. A passion for history leads to writing Marjorie Rackliffe’s dream was to take her passion for American history and write children’s books that would make history come alive. As a librarian, she knew about Cobblestone Magazine for children, but had no idea how to get published. “Taking Char’s classes helped me learn about all aspects of getting my stories published,” said Rackliffe. “Char helped me achieve my goal of getting an article published in Cobblestone — the first step toward my goal of being an independent writer."

From typewriter to author of five published books Dawson Walton would describe himself as someone who has always had a vivid imagination. Ten years ago, he got an idea for a book and started banging it out on his typewriter. Eventually, he upgraded to a computer, and began the challenging process of getting published. Walton enrolled in a Writers’ Workshop class and learned the steps he needed to take to self-publish his books. Since then, he has completed a book trilogy, plus two more books. Walton now participates in a variety of writers’ groups on social media platforms. Writing at any age When Barry and Margaret Smith met at a Meet-up Group for seniors, they both had an interest in writing, and eventually, in each other. They got married and got serious about exploring a shared writing project. They wanted to publish their Jack the Rabbit and Friends series — stories that teach a gentle lesson, designed to be read aloud to children. “We took Char’s class to learn the logistics of publishing our stories. She taught us about formatting and self-publishing through Amazon,” said Barry Smith. “No matter what your age, if you love to write, follow your writing dreams!” They have since hired their own publicist to help with social media promotion of their stories. Encouragement to pursue big dreams After experiencing how much her students enjoyed the camaraderie of meeting other writers, Torkelson started the Writers' Critique Group where writers can connect with other writers and get group feedback. As she looks back on the advice she got about her passions not being very practical, Torkelson just smiles. “If you love to write, you can learn the steps to make your dreams a reality,” said Torkelson.

Analyze the cost of long term care on your planned retirement, and learn about relevant legislative issues (MN Federal tax laws, Deficit Reduction Act of 2006, MN Partnership Program 2008). Long-term care insurance is not for everyone — getting educated on its pros and cons IS for everyone. Learn if LTCI is right for you, and how to design and compare any LTCI policy.
Learn what a living trust is and how it can be used to avoid probate while still retaining control of your assets. Discover alternative methods of avoiding probate, and ways to plan for preserving your assets in case of extraordinary medical costs and long-term care. Essential information on different types of wills and approaches to estate planning will be included. Richard Bunin is an experienced attorney who will answer your important questions.

Who would raise your children if you died? Who will be your executor? Without a will, the laws in Minnesota and a judge make all of these decisions. Take charge of these decisions in this class. You will leave with a simple will prepared, and have peace of mind. Instruction and all the necessary forms, witnesses, and notaries are provided. Will form is included in the tuition. Instructor Michael Milo is an attorney experienced in drafting wills.
Health Care Directive & Power of Attorney Joy Gullikson
Procrastinate no more! Give your loved ones an important gift by creating two legal documents — a Health Care Directive and a Power of Attorney. These documents are essential in the event you become incapacitated and cannot make decisions for yourself. A Health Care Directive (akin to the former Living Will) is a legal document that communicates your health care wishes, and allows you to name someone to make health care decisions for you when you cannot speak for yourself. A Power of Attorney allows you to choose someone to handle your finances and property, and is effective immediately upon signing. With the help of attorney, Joy Gullikson, leave class with two notarized documents, and give yourself and your loved ones some peace of mind. Register early – you will receive a handout in the mail that you will need before class. #440: 1 session - limit 15 Wed., Oct. 22 Eisenhower Community Center 209

December
In the Hopkins High School Auditorium JazzMN Orchestra presents The Music of Little Big Bands Little big bands — groups larger than a combo but not a full big band — have existed throughout jazz history, from Miles Davis’s “Birth of the Cool,” Gerry Mulligan’s augmented combos, and Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau, to contemporary groups such as Gordon Goodwin’s Little Phat Band, Snarky Puppy, or JazzMN saxophonist Pete Whitman’s X-Tet. Due to the mid-size and often unorthodox instrumentation, these great charts haven’t been played nearly enough, something JazzMN will look to remedy. For tickets and other information about JazzMN Orchestra, please visit www.jazzmn.org.

TIME VALUE
In Pursuit of Big Dreams Carrie Atkins, Marjorie Rackliffe, Dawson Walton, and Barry and Margaret Smith didn’t know each other — but they all had something in common. They had a dream of sharing their creative voices — as expressed through writing — to the larger world. These writers all signed up to take Writers’ Workshop courses with instructor Char Torkelson. Although their writing styles are quite different, they each learned valuable strategies needed to accomplish their dreams of publishing their work. When she graduated from college with degrees in art and history, Torkelson had three loves — Writers’ Workshop participant and now published author, Carrie Atkins writing, art, and dancing. “I was given advice that my interests were not practical. However, I’ve been able to pursue all three of my interests over time,” she said. In 1999, Torkelson published her first book, launching a career as a writer and illustrator — she has since published more than 70 books and articles. Along the way, Torkelson learned a lot about the process of publishing, including
