From the Coordinator Back to school! Our world is ordered by the academic calendar. Young people are headed back to class, and adults are cheering them on, supporting their goals, and championing their success. This back-to-school season is a great time for adults to engage in learning something new as well, and your Community Education program here in Hopkins is ready for you! Beyond the obvious benefits of lifelong learning, adult learners model positive strategies and attitudes toward learning that young people can see and identify with, and this can mold and shape their perceptions for a lifetime. In addition, research has shown that adult learners in Community Education are more informed about their school district, have favorable attitudes toward school decisions, and are vocal advocates of their local schools. Cultivating a dedication to lifelong learning is more than a fun and engaging way to occupy your time. Adult education provides tangible opportunities to improve your career, your quality of life, and even your health. Join us for one or more of our nearly 300 classes this fall. Learn to cook, paint, write, compute, balance your budget, plan your retirement, experience a foreign language, dance, draw, design, and so much more. Hopkins Community Education is here to meet your lifelong learning needs. The door is wide open for you to learn what you’d like — and to teach what you know! Lifelong learning feeds the spirit. It gives us purpose; it gives us focus; and it fuels our sense of fulfillment. What more could we want in Hopkins than eager, fulfilled, and invested residents and a supportive and thriving learning community for all? Take the leap — register for a class or two today. You’ll be happy you did and you’ll be benefiting your personal wellbeing, investing in the health of our school district, and supporting the vibrancy of our community by doing so! See you in class,

Andrea Sjogren, Adult Program Coordinator

TIME VALUE

Connected, engaged, and inspired "Providing rich learning opportunities for our residents is the role of Hopkins Community Education." — Dr. Rhoda Mhiripiri-Reed As a community, if we want to collectively wrap our arms around our E-12 students, we must build and grow our brains so we can model effective thinking, learning, and communication for our students. In early August, I attended a workshop with members of our Hopkins School Board at which we learned the importance of developing mental habits that consistently yield effective human interactions. Effective interactions are especially important for our consideration because our adult behaviors impact our children and adolescents more than we know or can measure. Dr. Rhoda Mhiripiri-Reed

This workshop made me think about the connections between continuous adult learning and modeling learning behaviors for our children. Providing rich learning opportunities for our residents is the role of Hopkins Community Education.

If we in Hopkins leverage Community Education to enrich our lives, build a culture of continuous learning throughout our community, and model learning behaviors for our E-12 students, then Hopkins will continue to be strengthened as a thriving, progressive, and caring community. Hopkins Community Education offers fun courses for residents. Community Education also helps us expertly manage the racial, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity that vibrantly characterizes Hopkins. The adult courses offered are plentiful! Here are some Community Education classes I would absolutely love to take: • Tuscan Fall Dinner • Talking About Race and Racism with Kids • Online Buying and Selling Additionally, for parents with young children, we encourage you to review our Early Childhood programs. Early learning is essential for maximizing little ones’ development. Let’s continue to work together to enrich and increase our collective learning in Hopkins.
