From the day Sandra’s mother provided her with her own art supplies as a child, she has never known a moment of boredom!

Sometimes referred to as a “flame of fire," Quincy Oliver is an awarding-winning motivational speaker, author, and consultant.

Carmen’s drumming passion began with percussion studies and performances with numerous jazz and concert ensembles. She discovered the congas and Latin percussion while attending Cuban jazz concerts in Mexico and the Caribbean islands.

Sandra Muzzy

Sandra is a full-time artist and is very involved in the Minneapolis art scene. She even has a home art studio just outside her back door. For Sandra, watercolor is the perfect medium to capture the transient nature of her subjects — it can be spontaneous, high energy, and capricious — and it is always delicate and responsive. She is particularly intrigued with capturing the natural world in her paintings. Sandra invites you to discover how truly enjoyable watercolor painting can be.

Discover the beautiful art of watercolor with Sandra as your guide, see page 5.

Quincy Oliver

He is energetic, informative, and entertaining, possessing an incredible ability to inspire people to succeed in their personal and professional lives. Quincy speaks to Fortune 500 companies, businesses, schools, and more. His expertise, insight, and practical solutions have made him a highly sought-after speaker. Quincy will help you see the invisible, believe the incredible, and achieve the impossible.

Discover Quincy Oliver’s class How to Achieve, Succeed, and Win in Life Through the Power Public Speaking on page 19.

Carmen Dougherty-Heim

Later, Carmen took several drumming classes through Hopkins Community Education. She then went on to teach drumming classes for Hopkins Community Education students. Currently, Carmen plays in Al Dworsky’s Village Groove Dog’s drum circle, and congas/percussion with St. Margaret Mary’s choir band. Carmen invites you to check out a new hobby in a fun, welcoming environment.

Express yourself with Carmen’s Hand Drumming classes on page 27.

From the Coordinator

No matter who you are or your age and stage in life, we are somewhat ordered by the academic calendar, and so September brings with it a sense of fresh starts and new opportunities. I have family members headed to their first day of college, grad school, high school, the empty nest, retirement, and first grade — but no matter who we are or where we’re headed, we’re lucky that the learning never stops. Hopkins Community Education is your partner as you think about re-stocking your school bag this fall. Consider a sharp new pencil and fresh notebook for our series of writer’s workshops (page 20); a new watercolor set to paint the town with our new Hopkins Main Street Sketchbook experience (p. 5); a ruler or maybe a calculator to measure your finances in preparation for retirement (p. 26); new gym shoes for morning yoga or an evening hike (p. 14); and a scissors for exploring the art of couponing (p. 24), or for trying your hand at scrapbooking (p. 21). Interested in Spanish or French? We’ve got you covered (p. 31). Favorite subject always lunch? Don’t miss the wide variety of new and interesting cooking classes offered this fall (p. 10-12). How about a spin through the woodshop? You’ll want to check out our brand new Hopkins TechLab for classes in woodworking and more (p. 20). In addition, there are art, music, computer, health, science, online classes, and even a field trip or two planned just for you. Hopkins Community Education is ready. Take a look inside our fall catalog and let September be your time of new learning and new commitments! We welcome you into our schools as lifelong learners and engaged citizens, and are here to provide you with opportunities of every kind. September is here! Grab your new school supplies and let’s go … See you in class!

Photography classes, continued from back page captured and shared and budding photographers were hooked. Capturing the sites As the class continued to grow, students took in some of the many memorable sites of Hopkins and beyond, starting with the Hopkins Fire Department. Then came the Jackson Street Roundhouse in St. Paul with some photos of classic locomotives. Most recently, a trip to Thunderbird Aviation in Eden Prairie yielded phoSpotts’ photo of the Minnesota Transportation Museum tos that now hang in the terminal at Flying Cloud Airport. Other photo shoot locations include Twin Cities museums, Fort Snelling, Murphy’s Landing, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, the Sculpture Garden, and more.

He never imagined that his first community education class in Hopkins almost 16 years ago would lead to this kind of Randall Spotts’ photography students communitybuilding, and produce these wonderful, professional results. New and returning students are enthusiastic about the learning and social connections they make in the class. See the world through a different lens Have you always had an interest in taking great photographs? Now is the time! Join us as Hopkins Community Education presents a new year of Photography: Field Shoot. The first session begins on September 26.

Building skills and a sense of community Spotts is quick to share that his students work hard to develop their craft, and he is happy they keep coming back for more. Many of the students in the class are “regulars” who are continually looking for ideas and new ways to refine their skills as photograhers. A strong sense of community can be seen in this class — everyone has a chance to learn together, show their boards, receive feedback, and get published. Many students use the Field Shoot class experience as a means to see the Twin Cities in a whole new way — through the camera lens.

Try a photography class with Randy Spotts and some of his “regulars,” you might become a regular yourself!

“The longevity of the class is humbling”, says Spotts.

Check out fall photography classes below.

Photography, like many art forms, inspires imagination, preserves memories, and lets you see things with a whole new persepctive. It’s a wonderful feeling when you capture something special with a camera. Experience it for yourself. Here at Hopkins Community Education, we consider ourselves fortunate to be able to offer you outstanding photography classes right in your own community. Never stop learning.

Taking Photos and Making Connections

building a great place to live

As the great photographer Ansel Adams once said, “A photograph is usually looked at — seldom looked into.” That truth holds fast for many photographs that you see every day throughout the Twin Cities, many of which may have been taken by our own Hopkins Community Education photography students and their professional instructor, Randall Spotts. Thanks to Randy, his teaching, the opportunities he provides, and the art form honed by students over time, scores of adults in our community can now claim their photography as published, purchased, or publicly displayed works of art.

Randy started teaching community education classes in photography and composition here in Hopkins in 1999. Before long, film photography was out and digital photography was in. A Field Shoot class was added to accommodate the demand for more classes, offering a photography experience at the Historic Burwell House in Minnetonka. Several beautiful photographs were more on Randall Spotts' photography classes on page 22.
