From the Coordinator Wondering what’s new in our Early Childhood Programs? Take a peek inside and find several new offerings as a result of your feedback to us. This summer, you will discover a more flexible palette of Kaleidoscope summer preschool sessions (p. 14). You can choose one or more classes providing hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) experiences, along with stories, writing activities, music, art, and dramatic and outdoor play. Another new Kaleidoscope preschool offering this fall is a half-day, five-day per week class for your four-year-old child (p. 13, section J). This new option affords your child more time to explore, discover, create, and experiment in a classroom environment that fosters critical-thinking skills, as well as social, emotional, and physical growth. And, because we know that the foundation of your child’s development starts at birth, we have added new options to our workshops for those of you with infants and toddlers. Our series of free classes for parents of infants now includes a session on Safe Sleep for Babies (p. 8). Boost your awareness of what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends for keeping babies safe during sleep. Then, explore our other offerings that share information and strategies to improve your infant’s sleep, nutrition, and comfort. If the date of a class doesn’t fit into your schedule right now, try scheduling a free one-to-one visit at a location of your choice with our licensed parent educator (p. 16 ). You can also check out our parenting blog, HopkinsParent.com, a trusted source for parenting and child development information, tips, and events. Join us in the many educational, interactive, and fun programs and events for you and your young family!

Meet Kaleidoscope Preschool Teacher:

Amy Guthrie

Amy has been a teacher at Kaleidoscope Preschool since 1992. A favorite aspect of her job at Harley Hopkins Family Center is teaching in a building full of dedicated early childhood professionals. She is excited about the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) focus, and all the materials that enhance a preschooler’s natural curiosity and wonder. Amy lives in St. Louis Park with her husband and three children, all of whom are proud Hopkins alumni. In her spare time, Amy likes to travel, read, and walk around Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis.

Find part-day preschool options on pages 12-14. For summer preschool options, check out page 14, and get ready for a summer of fun and learning!

Meet Stepping Stones Preschool Lead Teacher:

Kathy Willett

Kathy has always known that she was meant to teach young children. In her teenage years, she was a very popular babysitter who was booked out for weeks in advance. Kathy graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and later earned her license in Early Childhood Special Education. She has a passion for working with the 4 and 5 year olds in her Stepping Stones Preschool classroom, where she is the lead teacher. Kathy and her husband have two beautiful daughters — one at North Junior High, and the other at Meadowbrook Elementary. In addition to volunteer work at her church nursery, Kathy enjoys curling up with a good book, watching a movie with her girls, or going camping with the family.

Need preschool options? Check out pages 12-14.

Meet ECFE Spanish Interpreter

Carolyn Tabor

Carolyn was born in Chile. She studied at the University of Chile to become a teacher, majoring in English as a Second Language (ESL), now known as English Language Learner (ELL). Carolyn came to Minnesota in 1990 through an exchange program, and began working in an elementary Spanish program in St. Paul. Later, she earned a license to teach Spanish and bilingual education from the University of Hamline and the University of Minnesota. She became an interpreter for Hopkins Public Schools in 2003. She loves working with Spanish-speaking families, helping them overcome language barriers. Carolyn’s husband is a Minnesotan and they have two children. She still remembers taking her daughter, now 15, to ECFE classes and how wonderful they were!

Early Childhood Family Education

You are your child’s first and most impor tant teacher

What are ECFE classes? Our ECFE Classes (ECFE is Early Childhood Family Education)

You are your child’s first and most important teacher. Our affordable ECFE classes can help you with that role. Our high quality classes are for you and your young children — birth to pre-kindergarten age. A typical class meets once a week and includes: • Parent-Child Activity. Time where you and your child together enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities. You’ll take home new ideas for things you can do together. • Parent Discussion. You’ll meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences, and information about child development and parenting techniques. • Children’s Activity Time. While you are in Parent Discussion (in separating classes), children learn and play with licensed early childhood teachers. Children practice social skills and will enjoy music, art, stories, and large/small muscle activities.

More Activities & Workshops

And there’s more — join us for Special Topics workshops and fun family events (page 8), and many other exciting activities (page 16, 17, and back cover)! Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available for participants.

Didn’t start when your child was a baby?

No problem! We have classes for you and your child all the way from birth to five years old. You are welcome to join classes at any point it fits with your family’s life.

How to choose an ECFE class: Choosing an ECFE class to attend is easy. Aside from our events and Special Topics classes, all of our affordable ECFE classes meet once a week for 6 to 14 weeks. There are day and evening options for all age groups, and most classes have sibling care. Our classes fall into three categories: non-separating, gradual separating, or separating. Read the descriptions below and then check out our classes on pages 4-7.

Non-Separating Classes What you need to know about non-separating classes: • Parents and children stay together in the classroom for the entire duration of the class. • Parents remain in the same room with children and interact with them in varied learning and play activities. • A licensed parent educator leads discussion on topics such as child growth and development, transition to parenthood, and how children learn and play. • Discussion, sharing, and support take place within sight and sound of playing children.

Gradual Separating Classes What you need to know about gradual separating classes: • Parents and children follow the same format as listed in separating classes, except that parents start out meeting in the same room with the children and then move to a separate room several weeks into the semester. • Separate meetings begin with only short periods of time away from the children. • Gradually, the periods are lengthened as children adjust to the separation.

Registration for Fall 2014 ECFE lottery classes must be received by Thursday, April 17 at noon. See page 9 for lottery information. Questions about our programs? Call Kathryn at 952-988-5046.

Separating Classes What you need to know about separating classes: • Parents and children interact and explore activities together for about 30 minutes of class time. This provides an opportunity to share, learn new ideas, games, songs and activities that can be used at home. • Following interaction time, parents meet in a separate classroom with a licensed parent educator for discussion of topics related to child development and parenting. They share ideas, information and experiences with one another, gaining knowledge and encouragement. • While parents meet with a licensed parent educator, children participate in age-appropriate activities with a licensed early childhood teacher and a teaching assistant. Children are provided experiences which encourage social, emotional, physical and cognitive development.

Sibling Care Sibling Care (if needed) is available on a sliding-scale basis for children from birth through kindergarten who are not involved in class. Starting at 6 months of age, siblings need to go to sibling care. Newborns and young babies are welcome to come to class with parents. Sibling care cost is half of the class fee. Sign up for it on your registration form, page 10.

Infants & Parents newborn to 15 months How is my baby’s brain developing? Is she eating enough? When will he begin to sit up, roll over, crawl, talk? The questions never end during this amazing time of development. Our parent educators have the knowledge and experience to field all your important questions. Our non-separating classes, for parents and infants together, are held once a week. Elementary Programs

Junior & Senior High

Here are just a few of the things that make Hopkins K-6th grade special! • NEW! Spanish Language instruction for all kindergarten through second-grade students in Fall 2014. • Our STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) and EiE (Engineering is Elementary) curriculum promotes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for all students. Hopkins is one of only three schools districts in Minnesota that offers EiE curriculum. • Gifted and Talented Services begin in kindergarten, and ensure that enrichment opportunities are provided in core subjects. • Every Hopkins elementary school has a full-time counselor who partners with teachers, and works with individual students/families. • Every Hopkins elementary school offers orchestra and band. • Our teachers tap into the unique needs of each student to inspire a life-long enthusiasm for learning. • Digital content and devices in our classrooms continue to expand our ability to customize learning for your child.

Hopkins offers one of the most enriched academic programs in the state. In addition to a rigorous core curriculum of English, math, science, social studies, and reading, students’ academic day includes an extensive experiential program including: • World Languages & immersion programs • Visual Arts • Physical Education • Music • Family and Consumer Sciences • Technical Education • College in the Classrooms (CiS) • Extensive AP offerings

¡HOLA!

In addition to our AP, College in the Schools, and Honors courses, Hopkins offers extensive options: more than 250 high school courses and 60 junior high electives. Our junior highs are International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate schools, giving our students a unique global focus. Prepared for College — Prepared for Life Our secondary program gives students an extraordinary range of opportunities so they begin to know themselves, and are more focused and prepared when they enter post-secondary education or the workforce, because of their many experiences at Hopkins Public Schools.

World Language in all elementary schools

All kindergarten through second-grade classrooms have Spanish language instruction integrated into the regular curriculum. Spanish language instruction will expand yearly until all elementary grades have the integrated curriculum. The addition of our new Spanish language instruction program to the elementary curriculum aligns with the competitive World Language opportunities offered at our junior and senior high schools. Adding a world language to the elementary curriculum is an excellent learning opportunity for our students. Research has shown that learning other languages has a positive effect on intellectual growth, improves understanding of a child’s native language, provides exposure to other cultures, and gives students a head start in the language requirements needed for college.
