Hopkins Community Education: Early Childhood Programs

Welcome to our Early Childhood Programs At a recent White House Summit on Early Education, Nobel Prize-winning University of Chicago economics professor, James Heckman, stated that “we should not underestimate the role of the parent and the power that comes from providing parents with information, resources, and choice.” We in Minnesota agree with Professor Heckman on the critical role that parents play in nurturing their young children’s development. Our statewide Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program, established 40 years ago, recognizes that parents are children’s first and most significant teachers. The education and support parents receive when participating in ECFE helps them provide the best possible environment for the healthy growth and development of their children — the mission of ECFE. Our celebration of ECFE’s 40th birthday continues. Join us and discover how participating in ECFE can become one of the highlights of your week. ECFE Overview Early Childhood Family Education

About ECFE classes Our trusted Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program offers affordable, high quality classes that support you and your young children. A typical class meets once a week and includes: Parent-Child Activity. Time for you and your child to enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities. You’ll take home new ideas for things you can do together. Parent Discussion. You’ll meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences, and information about child development and parenting techniques. Children’s Activity Time. While you are in Parent Discussion (in separating classes), children learn and play with licensed early childhood teachers. Children practice social skills and will enjoy music, art, stories, and physical activities. And there’s more — join us for Special Topics workshops and fun family events (pages 8-9), and many other exciting activities (page 19 and back cover)! Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available for participants. Our Mission. The mission of Early Childhood Family Education is to strengthen families and support the ability of all parents in providing the best possible environment for healthy growth and development of their children. Our Staff. Our experienced ECFE teaching staff is dedicated to parents and children. Teachers hold a degree and state license in Parent Education, Early Childhood Education, or both. We look forward to being a trusted resource for learning, connections, and support for your family. We have classes for you and your child from birth to five years old. Sign up for classes at any time! *Note, the word “parent” in this publication refers to adult caregivers responsible for the child.

ECFE Overview

Early Childhood Family Education

How do I chose the right ECFE class? With so many options, there is something to fit your needs. Aside from our family events and Special Topics classes, all of our affordable ECFE classes meet once a week for 6 to 14 weeks. There are day and evening options, and most classes have sibling care. Our classes fall into three categories: non-separating, gradual separating, or separating. Read the descriptions below and then check out our classes on pages 4-9. To determine class fee, see the fee scale on page 11. If you still aren’t sure, please call parent educator, Kathryn Moore at 952-988-5046. About non-separating classes: You and your child stay together in the classroom for the entire duration of the class, engaging with them in enriching learning and play activities. A licensed parent educator will lead parent conversations on important topics such as child growth and development, transitioning to parenthood, and how children learn and play. Your child has a chance to play during this supportive group discussion About gradual separating classes: In the beginning of gradual separating classes, you and your child meet in the same room. Parents will move to a separate room gradually as the class progresses. Separate parent meetings begin with short meeting times, and are gradually lengthened. About separating classes: You and your child explore activities together for about 30 minutes. This provides an opportunity to learn new ideas, games, songs, and activities that can be used at home. Then, parents meet in a separate classroom with a licensed parent educator for conversations related to child development and parenting. Parents share ideas, information, and experiences with one another, gaining knowledge, new connections, and support. Meanwhile, your child will participate in age-appropriate activities with a licensed early childhood teacher and a teaching assistant. Children are provided enriching early learning experiences which encourage social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. Sibling Care is available, if needed, on a sliding-scale basis for children for most classes. Siblings from three months through kindergarten who are not involved in class are eligible. Starting at 3 months of age, siblings may go to sibling care. Babies who are not yet mobile are welcome to come to class with parents. Sibling care cost is half of the class fee. Sign up for it on your registration form, page 12. Immunization Law. All students in the state of Minnesota must have immunizations up-to-date and schools must have a child’s immunization record when the child starts school.

Dates to note: Winter/Spring daytime and evening classes begin the week of September 14, 2015, and end on January 15, 2016 unless otherwise noted. What will my child learn? Our preschools are designed to provide a foundation for lifelong learning. Our curriculum is inspired by the signature Reggio Emilia Approach, meaning we foster academic and critical thinking skills – as well as social, physical, and emotional growth – in a guided discovery-based setting that helps prepare children for kindergarten. Learning is individualized. Activities and areas of exploration: • Music • Literacy Activities • Science • Problem Solving • Art • Cooperative Activities • Cooking • Large Muscle Activities • Math Skills • Fine Motor Skills • Social Skills • Creative Dramatics What a typical day may look like Children participate in a variety of experiences designed to develop the whole child. Topics of exploration are developed out of children’s interests, as well as from teacher provocations. This curriculum includes: • Individual, small, and large group activities. • Learning center/choice time. • Outdoor play on our natural outdoor playscapes. • Stepping Stones also offers: rest time, field trips, nutritious breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack.

Communication is key! Great communication with our families is a key to our success! We pride ourselves on our excellent teacher-parent communication. In addition to family conferences twice a year, families receive regular newsletters with recaps and previews of activities, daily highlights, and recommendations for parents on how they can extend learning beyond the school day.

STEM in all Hopkins Preschools STEM: Science, technology, engineering, math. Children are natural explorers, problem-solvers, and sense-makers. What they explore depends on the materials, experiences, and support we provide them. All Hopkins preschool programs incorporate STEM curriculum.

3 Locations: Alice Smith Elementary, Eisenhower Elementary, and Gatewood Elementary Schools.

The STEM for Preschool project provides our preschool classrooms with the tools and knowledge necessary to assist children in an elevated beginning exploration and understanding of STEM concepts. This will give preschoolers the STEM base knowledge, ready to be expanded on, as they move into deeper STEM concepts through the Hopkins Public Schools curriculum.

Early Childhood Screening must do! An important milestone before entering kindergarten!

Early childhood screening offers a snapshot of your child’s health and development. Screening is a brief, simple procedure used to identify potential health or developmental problems in young children. Screening supports children’s readiness for kindergarten and promotes positive child health and developmental outcomes. Every child entering kindergarten in Minnesota is required to go through early childhood screening. If your child is between the ages of 3 and 5 years, you are invited to make an appointment for an early childhood screening. Make your child’s screening appointment now: Register online at www.HopkinsSchools.org/screen, or leave a phone message at 952-988-5017.
