2 | Hopkins Community Education

From the Coordinator Happy fall! The words conjure up the notion of back-to-school time and although young people are, indeed, returning to classrooms, we in Community Education are utilizing our school facilities and operating great learning and engagement programs year-round. During the 1968-69 school year, Governor Harold LeVander took seriously the idea of “lighted schoolhouses” as a community asset — using school facilities to offer learning, engagement, recreation, and more beyond the 6-hour school day and the 9-month school year in the interest of supporting the growth of individuals and the betterment of the community. This insightful leadership led to the formal development of what we now know as Community Education. This year, we celebrate and mark this informal anniversary of 50 years of offering great things to Minnesotans through Community Education. Over 1.7 million school age youth, 350,000 early learners, and nearly 1 million adults are welcomed into Community Education programs and opportunities each year in Minnesota. Each dollar invested by the state is leveraging six times that at the local level — dollars that are reinvested directly in our youth, adults, families, and communities. Hopkins Community Education is making a difference, and we welcome you as our partner. As Hopkins Public Schools makes plans to move from Great to World Class, we are here to offer you the same — world-class programs, events, partnerships, and opportunities to ensure a vibrant community of life-long learners. Please take some time to peruse the classes and opportunities included here. Join us to learn what you’d like…and to teach what you know! We’re here to be a catalyst and connector — working with you to create a forward-thinking, world-class community here in Hopkins! Honoring the past and looking forward,

Andrea Sjogren, Adult Program Coordinator

TIME VALUE

Connect, dream, and plan for your best life. “The purpose of life is a life of purpose! ” — Richard Leider

building a great place to live.

Do you find yourself searching for purpose in life on occasion? We all do — young or not so young, we are generally longing to make sense of our lives, and know that we have a purpose and are directing our lives to follow that purpose. As we move from young adulthood through retirement and beyond, the questions change: What is my calling? What’s calling me next? How do I grow whole, not old? And, what is my legacy?

No matter our life stage, we often feel worn out by overwhelming responsibilities and nonstop change. We’re just tired — weighed down by a heavy load at work, in relationships, and in our communities. Moreover, we sometimes misplace our ability to play and have fun, our curiosity, and our sense of wonder about the world. The good news is that we are all basically hardwired to find the connections, fun, and purpose to live a article continues on page 31 in Special Interest section
