Dominique Pierre-Toussaint Dominique Pierre-Toussaint is the new Community Engagement Supervisor within the Hopkins Community Education department. Dominique has been part of the school district and the community for many years, and most recently served students and families at Glen Lake Elementary. Dominique is passionate about community! He is working collaboratively with partners, contacts, friends, and neighbors throughout Hopkins to find engagement points, make connections, build relationships, and help create the world-class community we can all envision here in Hopkins. Dominique brings his spirit and passion to our community every day and is looking forward to connecting with you.

We truly have something for everyone in Community Education — art classes to stretch your creative side, fitness and wellness classes to build health and wellbeing, language classes to further discover our big but connected world, cooking, special interest, parenting, home and garden, and more. Classes are great ways to build on emerging or long-term hobbies and interests, meet friends, and build your community. In addition to the classes you see here, we are working on creating new options to best suit your needs and wishes. What are you hoping to see in your Community Education department, in your community, in your neighborhood? How to Talk About Contemporary Art

Many who appreciate art want to know how to interpret it with more technical understanding. Discuss the basics of art history, styles, and techniques for making different types of art. Then, tour the galleries of the Minneapolis Institute of Art and practice your newly acquired visual vocabulary. All levels welcome!

Engage with conceptual art, post-modern art, and more. Students will learn the difference between contemporary, modern, and historical art. Discuss artist intent, the role of the audience in art, and art in society. The second day of class may be held at an area gallery. How to Talk about Contemporary Art is designed for all levels.

Pottery classes for all skill levels. Exploring Pottery

Pottery on the Wheel — Advanced

It's not too late to learn — adults at all levels of experience can develop pottery skills. Those with experience can explore more advanced techniques such as lids, handles, altering, pattern-making, and more. Unless you are a returning student, attendance is required at the first session. **

Express your passion for clay as you expand your pottery skills. Fine tune your throwing skills, explore tool/turn pieces, learn to create more complex forms such as pots (handles, lidded jars, teapots, etc.), and explore altered and manipulated forms in greater depth. This is an advanced class — there will be no instruction in the basics of throwing and glazing. Prerequisite: You must be able to comfortably throw a 6-inch cylinder on the wheel. **

Curious about clay? Start your clay-learning process by mastering various hand-building methods and get an introduction to the potter's wheel. Steve will show you a wide-variety of techniques and give you lots of individual instruction as you create projects you choose. If you are taking a pottery class through Hopkins Community Education, Open Pottery Studio is an opportunity for you to work on a personal project or continue to work on your class projects. Hopkins Community Education Pottery instructors supervise the open studio time. However, no instruction is provided. Open Pottery Studio fee does not include clay. Create pottery for a cause! Empty Bowls Pottery

Steve Frederickson, Chris Frederiksen, Kathy Israel No pottery experience is necessary to create a beautiful ceramic soup bowl for the annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser to fight hunger in our community! You will build two bowls by hand — one bowl to donate to the Empty Bowls event and one to keep! Bowls are created at the first class and glazed at the second. This is a wonderful family experience — please register each parent and child separately. No discounts. Bowl pick-up is Saturday, March 10, 9:00-10:00 am. Capture the light with mosaics and glass. Glass Mosaic: Garden Stepping Stones

Glass Mosaic: Sign or Garden Stake

Using pre-cut glass, design and create a gorgeous stepping stone for your garden. Patterns will be available, or you can bring an outline of a child's hand to make a unique keepsake. 8" round and square molds are available. Materials fee of $15 includes all supplies for one stepping stone, and there will be time to make multiple. Bring a bag lunch and spend the day being creative! **

Create a beautiful mosaic piece for your garden! Using pre-cut glass, decorate a bird, butterfly, or flower with colorful glass. A variety of sign sizes and stencils are also available. The first night you'll work on your project. The second night uses grout, so dress for mess. After your project is finished, you will learn about glass cutting, mosaic resources, and more. Material fees are payable to the instructor in first class. Signs start at $14, and the garden stakes are 3 for $30. More stakes available for $10 each. **

Glass Mosaic: Table Lamp or Candle Holder Lindsey Guetter

Create a custom, colorful table lamp or candleholder! Using pre-cut glass, you will cover a 4" x 9" lamp or 3" x 3" square candle holder. Stencils will be available, or you can create your own designs. The first night is dedicated to working on your project, having fun, and discovering your creative side. The second night uses grout, so make sure to dress for a mess. After your project is finished, you will learn about glass cutting, mosaic resources, other types of mosaics. NEW! Full Body Yoga

BARRE Fitness is a total conditioning program that blends classical ballet exercises with Pilates, yoga, and strength movements. Burn fat and increase lean muscle mass with this low-impact exercise. Use the ballet barre, as well as center work, to perform a variety of exercises to target multiple muscles. Please bring a pair of dumbbells (2-3 pounds) and a mat to class.

Learn the basics of yoga in this evening class for all ages. Discover poses and sequences at a pace that suits all levels, while concentrating on proper alignment and breath. Modifications and challenges will be given for various abilities as needed.

Family Swim Saturdays: Family fitness fun! Join us for a season of fun family swimming at the Eisenhower Community Center pool. Lifeguards are on duty during all family swim hours. Twined Rag Rug Weaving

Craft 25 hand-stamped cards (five cards of five designs) for a variety of occasions! Class includes pre-cut materials, envelopes, and use of instructor’s stamps, inks, and tools. Bring an adhesive of your choice to class (tombow, double stick tape, etc.) or purchase from instructor in class.

Discover the fine art of twined rag rug weaving, a great way to recycle old clothing or extra fabric. Learn the warping process, develop weaving techniques, and learn the finishing process for your own unique rug creation. Leave class with a completed 20" x 32" rug and the knowledge to create beautiful pieces for your home, cabin, family, and friends. Bring a sharp scissors, crochet hook/latch hook, and approximately 15 yards of any similar weight fabric to class. Plan on a total of 12-15 hours between classes to complete your rug. View the night sky through the Lawrence Sauter Telescope, located in the historic observatory atop the Eisenhower Community Center in Room 347. Beginning German II is a continuation of German I. The class will cover topics such as leisure and hobbies, food and drink, shopping, out and about in the city, body parts, basic grammar, and more. Registrations are on a first-come basis. Decision to cancel a class due to low enrollment is made before the class date, so register early to prevent your class from canceling.

Inclement Weather Information If the Hopkins School District is closed due to bad weather, then Community Education classes and activities may be canceled. If the weather turns bad late in the day, Community Education may also cancel activities. Call the 24-Hour Hopkins Community Education phone line for weather-related cancellations: 952-988-4019, or check our website: HopkinsSchools.org/weather.

Mark your calendar and assume you are registered. Your class will be held at the time and place indicated in the brochure unless you are contacted. We will notify you if a class is filled, canceled, or changed.

Important Cancellation Policy and Refund Information

• We will gladly refund your class registration fee, or switch your class, if you cancel five business days prior to the first class. Once a class has begun, no refunds or changes will be made. You may send a friend in your place if, at the last minute, you find you are unable to attend your class. • We reserve the right to cancel a class due to low enrollment. In that case, we will call you and arrange to refund your class fee.

Discounts Information

Residents of Hopkins School Districts, 62 years and older, and Hopkins Public Schools employees are eligible for some discounts as follows: • For cooking classes, may reduce fee by $5. • For pottery classes, may reduce fee by $25. • For most other classes, the discount is 25% off the regular fee not including materials or textbook fees. Exceptions include all computer classes, trips, and other courses as noted in the description. • Hopkins Public Schools employees are limited to one discounted class per session. • No discounts for classes at Hopkins Activity Center or Minnetonka Senior Center

Health Plan Discounts

All UCare Minnesota or Metropolitan Health Plan (MHP) members may take up to a $15 discount per class on most classes. Members must be on UCare or MHP at the time of registration and through the duration of the class. Indicate ID number(s) on the registration form.

Fee Assistance

Community Education has limited fee assistance available to School District residents who qualify and are unable to pay the full registration fee. For information and application, please call 952-988-4070.
